“South Africa calls on the United States, Israel, and Iran to give the United Nations the opportunity and space to lead on the peaceful resolution”

President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African government have noted with a great deal of anxiety the entry by the United States of America into the Israel-Iran war.

It was South Africa’s sincerest hope that President Donald Trump would use his influence and that of the US government to prevail on the parties to pursue a dialogue path in resolving their issues of dispute.

South Africa calls on the United States, Israel, and Iran to give the United Nations the opportunity and space to lead on the peaceful resolution of the matters of dispute, including the inspection and verification of Iran's status of uranium enrichment, as well as its broader nuclear capacity.

We, the States Members of the United Nations,

Reaffirming our conviction, which history confirms, that where colonial and racial domination or apartheid exist, there can be neither peace nor justice.

Affirming that apartheid, characterized as a crime against the conscience and dignity of mankind, is responsible for the death of countless number of people in South Africa, has sought to dehumanize entire peoples and has imposed a brutal war on the region of southern Africa, which has resulted in untold loss of life, destruction of property and massive displacement of innocent men, women and children and which is scourge and affront to humanity that must be fought and eradicated in its totality.

“Architects of the Slow War against White South Africans” 1 of 2

https://southafricatoday.net/south-africa-news/architects-of-the-slow-war-against-white-south-africans/

August 24, 2014

Since the fall of Apartheid in 1994 South Africa has seen an explosion in violent crime and in 20 short years has become the rape and murder capital of the world. This under the rule of the African National Congress (ANC).

The Urban Dictionary defines a Slow War as a war that is only visible when the big pattern is revealed over time. If you could play the seemingly-isolated events of a Slow War in speeded-up time, its real nature would be visible.

A Slow War is the opposite of the Blitzkrieg. A war so slow that you hardly notice it. A war so slow that those waging it can deny that it is actually happening. Under the fog of war they hide it as “ordinary crime”.

The end result is still the same as the Blitzkrieg. Total annihilation of the enemy.

Signs of the Slow War against Whites in South Africa:

• Afrikaans schools and universities forced to become English and taken over by blacks.

• Afrikaans language disappearing from television.

• Whites forced out of the civil service in their hundreds of thousands and replaced by incompetent blacks.

• Names of towns and streets replaced with the names of Marxist terrorists.

• 4000 white farmers killed.

• 40,000 whites robbed, raped, tortured and murdered in their homes.

One group has suffered greatly and their situation is getting worse by the day. Being a farmer in South Africa is officially the most dangerous job in the world. In fact you are 2.2 times more likely to be murdered as a SA farmer than a SA police officer is.

The South African farmer’s murder rate is 220 in 100,000. South Africa has been ruled by the African National Congress since 1994. In 1997 the government had the opinion that farmers were uniquely being targeted for murder.

South Africa’s then minister of safety and security Sydney Mufamadi established the joint task force of police, military and organized agriculture to develop a plan to protect farmers. It became the Rural Protection Plan and commando groups were tasked to protect the farmers.

In 1999 a “priority committee on rural safety” was created to ensure rural crime prevention strategies were treated as a national security priority. In 2001 police established an independent committee of inquiry into farm attacks. As a result from 2001-2007 police included a separate statistic for farm attacks and murders in their annual reports.

“Architects of the Slow War against White South Africans” 2 of 2

https://southafricatoday.net/south-africa-news/architects-of-the-slow-war-against-white-south-africans/

August 24, 2014

In the past decade the government’s attitude towards Afrikaans farmers as well as the European descended population has taken a 180 degree turn. The recording of farm attacks and murders were stopped in 2007 without explanation.

Then President Thabo Mbeki disbanded the commando units that same year giving the responsibility of protecting farms to the South African Police SAPs. It took eight years for the police to come up with a plan to protect farmers.

Up till 2007 the Democratic Alliance (DA) also actively supported the fight against farm attacks as reported by Mail and Guardian on 6 May 2007 [https://mg.co.za/article/2007-05-06-da-calls-for-hard-labour-criminals/].

“In another security-related motion, the congress called on the government to implement an effective policing policy in all rural areas, and to stop closing down commandos until sector policing units were in place.

“Proposing that motion, the party’s safety and security spokesperson Diane Kohler-Barnard said it was completely unacceptable that farmers, who fed the nation and had irreplaceable skills, should be left unprotected and exposed in the face of increasing farm attacks.”

Why did the DA stop supporting the fight against farm attacks in South Africa? Political incorrect to support the White minority in South Africa? Gain support of the masses by only addressing the issue of “ordinary crime”?

“SA's New Race-Based Hiring Quotas | Explained in 5 Minutes”

https://youtu.be/Q3YNUGuUlzs

Jun 20, 2025

South Africa's new Employment Equity Act represents unprecedented danger to businesses countrywide.

For the first time, the Act introduces explicit 'employment quotas' based on race, gender, and disability. These quotas restrict white male employment to just 4% in many categories and create absurd requirements that ignore industry realities, threatening to increase unemployment for all communities.

These rigid demographic quotas are business and job killers for everyone.

Responsible business people cannot allow racial hiring quotas to become mandatory for operating a business.

“WATCH: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses 2024 UN General Assembly”

https://youtu.be/9FLFViggrlc

Sep 24, 2024

11:34 – “It requires that the UN Security Council should be a more representative body and inclusive. 78 years since its formation, the structure of the United Nations Security Council remains largely unchanged. Africa and its 1.4 billion people remain excluded from its key decision making stuctures. This cannot continue.”

“‘We won’t be silent as apartheid is perpetrated against others’ – South Africa”

https://news.un.org/en/story/2024/09/1154816

24 September 2024

In his address to Assembly's annual high-level debate, he said, “The South African story bears witness to the enduring role of the United Nations in global matters. In supporting our struggle, the UN affirmed the principles of the UN Charter – fundamental human rights, the dignity and worth of every person, and the equal rights of nations large and small.”

With his country’s historic struggle to secure a flourishing democracy in mind, President Ramaphosa emphasized: “We South Africans know what apartheid looks like [and] we will not remain silent and watch as apartheid is perpetrated against others” in Gaza as Israel continues its collective punishment of the Palestinians.

He called for a collective effort through the UN system and other multinational institutions to end civilian suffering and for South Africa's legal action taken against Israel through the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prevail.

“The only lasting solution is the establishment of a Palestinian State that will exist side by side with Israel with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he stressed.

On other issues, he said every effort must be taken to bring peace to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Yemen, Ukraine and the Sahel region, but that all requires a truly representative and inclusive Security Council.

“The Security Council must be reformed as a matter of urgency. It must become more inclusive so that the voices of all nations can be heard and considered.”

He added that, "Africa stands ready to play its role in building a safer global order by participating in the work of the UN Security Council on the basis of respect and acceptance.”

President Ramaphosa said as part of the search for a safer world order, there must be greater cooperation between the UN and the African Union to resolve the root causes of wars on the continent.

“Hamas’ South African Support Network” 1 of 2

https://www.fdd.org/analysis/op_eds/2024/03/01/hamas-south-african-support-network/

March 1, 2024

South Africa does not just carry waterfor Hamas by attacking Israel in international forums. It has also allowed Hamas to turn South Africa into a base for fundraising, where an extensive network of front organizations builds support for terrorism. Washington has stepped up its efforts to impose sanctions on Hamas’s foreign enablers, but its South African support network has escaped the consequences so far.

At the center of Hamas’s South African web of support is the Muslim cleric Ebrahim Gabriels, also known as Ibrahim Jibril. Gabriels, a leader within the South African Muslim community, has founded, directed, and currently directs several Muslim organizations tied to Hamas. These include the South African branches of theAl-Quds International Foundation (AQIF), theAl-Aqsa Foundation (AAF), and the Muslim Judicial Council(MJC).

The Al-Quds Foundation (AQF) is the South African branch of the AQIF, which the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned in 2012 and features several senior Hamas leaders on its board. Gabriels spoke at the South African AQF’s opening ceremony in 2006 and serves as its president.

For their support of Hamas, the Treasury has also sanctioned the Al-Aqsa Foundation and its South African branch, an institution for which Gabriels has served as the chairman of the board. Two banks in South Africa froze the foundation’s accounts in 2013 because of AAF’s sanctions designation.

Gabriels has spent over two decades building support for Hamas. In 2004, as MJC president, Gabriels organized a protest march at which he said, “Hamas is not a terrorist group” and that the MJC supported Hamas “100 percent.” The Union of Good, a charity umbrella group the U.S. Treasury Department designated in 2008 for funding Hamas, listed Gabriels in 2004 as a board member. The MJC, listed as a Union of Good member, frequently co-hosts events with AQF, including a 2015welcome rally in South Africa for Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal.

On October 8, 2023, one day after Hamas massacred 1,200 Israelis, AAF’s South African branch held an eventin “support of Palestine and Masjid Al-Aqsa,” a reference to the mosque that sits atop the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. At the event, the MJC’sfirst deputy president offered “solidarity and support to our brothers and our sisters in Hamas.” Gabriels, an MJC leader, praised Hamas ghters as “people who are connected to Allah.”

Gabriels also met Hamas officials in Damascus in 2009, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh inGaza in 2011, politburo members Mohammad Nazzal and Maher Obeid inSouth Africa in 2017, and was part of a small group that welcomed a Hamas delegation to South Africa in 2015. A 2021 Arabiclanguage biography of Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzouk, based on interviews with Abu Marzouk himself, named Ebrahim Gabriels and an associate as Abu Marzouk’s gateway to South Africa’s Muslim community.

While Gabriels is a pivotal gure, South Africa’s Hamas problem goes much deeper. Besides the MJC, on its website in 2003, the Union of Good named sixteen other South African organizations as part of this Hamas funding network [https://www.terrorism-info.org.il/Data/pdf/PDF1/FEB22_05_680981780.pdf]. None are under any sanctions.

“Hamas’ South African Support Network” 2 of 2

https://www.fdd.org/analysis/op_eds/2024/03/01/hamas-south-african-support-network/

March 1, 2024

Pretoria has long been a friend of Hamas. South Africa was one of few countries to invite Hamas for talks following the terrorist group’s victory in Palestinian parliamentary elections in 2006. Pretoria also hosted Hamas delegations in 2015, 2018, and even in 2023, amid the war Hamas launched on Israel. On the day of Hamas’s killing spree, South Africa’s foreign ministry said, “The new conagration has arisen from from the continued illegal occupation of Palestine land, continued settlement expansion, desecration of the Al Aqsa mosque and Christian holy sites, and ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people.” A week later, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa donned a kafyeh and framed Hamas’s atrocities as a response to an “oppressive government that has occupied their land.” On October 17, Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor called Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh to discuss how to deliver aid to the Hamas-controlled territory.

Washington clearly has its work cut out for it. To begin, U.S. president Joe Biden should tell his South African counterpart in no uncertain terms that the United States expects Pretoria to take action against the terror fronts residing within its borders. South Africa’s Targeted Financial Sanctions list is based on the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC’s) list of proscribed entities and individuals. Pretoria should expand its list to obvious terrorist groups such as Hamas. If Pretoria fails to act, the administration should review South Africa’s eligibility for theAfrican Growth and Opportunity Act’s (AGOA) duty-free arrangement, which requires participating countries not to “undermine U.S. national security or foreign policy interests.”

However, the White House should not wait for Pretoria to act first. While the Treasury sanctioned the Al-Aqsa Foundation’s South African branch, it fell short of designating the Al-Quds Foundation of South Africa. Other glaring omissions include Gabriels himself and the MJC. Gabriels is the epicenter of Hamas funding and support in South Africa. Sanctioning him and his organizations will help dry up the funds that enabled the October 7 massacre.

“Dr Imtiaz Sooliman on Palestine, South Africa, Gift of the Givers // The Corder Report”

https://youtu.be/MomrSCjgRSw

Jun 25, 2025

Dr Imtiaz Sooliman is the leaders of Gift Of Givers, one of the worlds foremost disaster relief organisations that provide aid across South Africa and the world, including in Gaza. We were lucky enough to sit down with him to discuss the organisation, the plight of Palestinians in Gaza and South Africa's case at the ICJ.

3:10 – “So we are deeply blessed in South Africa to have Gift of the Givers and its work. We spoke on the TV show on Monday about how grateful the government is for the work that you guys do. How Gift of the Givers is truly the group that nobody messes with because whether it’s the police, government, community, people love you guys, want you there and appreciate the work you do.”

3:39 – “We’ve intervened in 47 countries from ’92 to now… Right now we have permanent offices in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Somalia, Yemen. We’re expanding now in West Africa and Mali. We have offices in Turkey, Syria, Gaza, West Bank, and Yemen. But from there, we can launch interventions in any part of the world… In Gaza, of course, we were there from 2009. We actually got involved in Palestine for the first time in 2002. That was a time that Aziz Pahad Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs that time… was invited to meet Yasser Arafat in his compound. He asked me to come with and we arranged medical equipment… When the war happened in 2009, it’s the first time we deployed a team. A medical team… about 40 of us went into Gaza itself… In 2013, we then decided to set up a permanent office. In 2014, the war came again and again we intervened with medical teams but this time we were blocked only 10 could go and not 40 and from then onwards we’ve had a permanent presence which has been expanding… My team members have lost 210 people.”

14:30 – “Tonight actually, you are hosting a Palestinian photojournalist, Tell us a little bit about that photojournalist?… I don’t know anything about him but he was brought into the country by Al Jazeera… Belal Khaled. He documented 300 days of genocide from the first day from October 8th… I was told about him and I said, let me host him because he’s got very striking pictures and he’s got a video.”

23:25 – “400 000 South Africans came back to the country and what did they say? They said we’re coming back with skills, with money and a desire to change the future of our country for the better.”

26:54 – “I got Belal Khaled to do a presentation to the ICJ team and to the partners they use in the UK, they were all online. So it was just… a confirmation of what they did was correct.”

25 June 2025

The haunting image of a Palestinian father holding the feet of his lifeless three-year-old son, killed in an Israeli airstrike, is among photographs taken in Gaza by photojournalist and artist Belal Khaled shown in Johannesburg.

The child’s face is out of the shot, his tiny foot in his father’s hand and his body covered by a white shroud.

An exhibition of Khaled’s work was shown in Ormonde, Johannesburg at the weekend.

In another image, a Palestinian girl carries her two white cats when her family is displaced by Israeli bombing.

In another photo Abdullah Al-Jouf kisses his child’s body after their home was bombed. Khaled told GroundUp that Al-Jouf had explained that he had gone to the shop and returned to find that his home had been bombed. His wife and child had been killed.

“When I saw him, he was talking to his dead child,” he said.

“He was telling him that he brought him his favourite biscuits. He placed the biscuits in the shroud with his child’s body and told him to take them with him to heaven,” said Khaled.

Khaled was born in a refugee camp in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. When he was ten, he witnessed the second Intifada, a popular uprising against the Israeli occupation.

He said he was inspired by powerful images of the killing of 12-year-old Muhammad al-Durrah. “From that point I dreamt of being a photojournalist, of delivering the stories of Gaza’s people to the world,” said Khaled.

Khaled said that because Israel was targeting journalists, many of his colleagues had moved out of their homes to protect their families from airstrikes.

“Many of my colleagues have been killed. Why? Because they are carrying a camera and delivering the truth to the world,” alleged Khaled.

In the first month of the conflict Khaled’s family home was bombed, injuring his mother and sister. A few months later, their home was completely destroyed. His father still lives in a tent pitched on the rubble where their home once stood.

“This is part of our resistance as Palestinians. I can fight with my camera, I can fight with my paintbrush, this is the same for all Palestinians. We are fighting with all our souls,” said Khaled.

“I always say that journalists in Gaza have two eyes. One is for seeing and documenting, and the other is for crying for everything that we see,” said Khaled.

Khaled’s work will be shown at the Bo Kaap Cultural Hub on Wednesday, 25 June in Cape Town. It can also be found on his Instagram page @belalkh.

“Allegations of Antisemitism and Terrorism Connections Against Gift of the Givers Founder Imtiaz Sooliman”

https://www.satorinews.com/articles/2025-01-12/allegations-of-antisemitism-and-terrorism-connections-against-gift-of-the-givers-founder-imtiaz-sooliman-538192

Published January 12, 2025

South African humanitarian organization, Gift of the Givers, is under scrutiny as its founder, Imtiaz Sooliman, faces serious allegations including antisemitism, endorsing terrorism, and lack of financial transparency. Founded in the early 90s, the organization initially gained recognition for its philanthropic efforts both locally and internationally. However, Sooliman’s recent statements and affiliations have cast a long shadow over his and the organization's credibility.

Critics argue that Sooliman's rhetoric has been inflammatory, particularly towards Israel. Instances such as Sooliman's participation in marches with known Hamas, ISIS, and Hezbollah supporters, and statements echoing extremist sentiments have fueled these allegations. His public declaration of "We are all Hamas" on October 5, 2024, alongside his disregard for international and human laws, citing adherence exclusively to Koranic law, has provoked international concern.

Moreover, the overlap between the teams and contact points of Gift of the Givers and Al Aqsa International South Africa—a noted financier to Hamas as per international intelligence—substantiates claims of murky financial dealings and associations with terrorist funding bodies like the Union of Good, which the U.S. Treasury has designated as a terrorist funder.

The operational aspects of Gift of the Givers also invite skepticism. Their significant role in Gaza, particularly in healthcare facilities that have been exposed as operational bases for Hamas, implicates the organization in potentially aiding military defenses under the guise of humanitarian aid. This is particularly concerning given the strategic use of such facilities by Hamas to shield their military activities, exploiting the humanitarian label.

The broader implications of these allegations are severe, not only for the integrity and operational legitimacy of Gift of the Givers but also for the broader nonprofit sector in regions of conflict. It raises pressing questions about the oversight of charitable organizations operating in politically sensitive regions.

Despite the growing clamor for clarity and accountability, Sooliman has yet to commit to an independent financial audit that could dispel or confirm these allegations. This refusal only amplifies concerns about the possible diversion of funds for supporting terrorist activities under the cover of humanitarian aid.

The need for transparency is critical, not just for the sake of Gift of the Givers’ reputation, but also for the countless beneficiaries of their aid who might suffer should the organization lose donor support due to these controversies. The international community, donors, and regulatory bodies must push for stringent audits and ensure that humanitarian organizations remain neutral and untainted by political or extremist affiliations.

As it stands, the shadow cast by these serious allegations threatens to undermine the humanitarian efforts of one of South Africa's most well-regarded charities, turning a potential force for good into a questionable entity in the eyes of the world.

• A senior South African Police Service officer said the three constables who died may have been killed by speeding on the road

• The constables were found at the Hennops River in Tshwane on 29 April 2025, six days after they disappeared

• The Deputy National police commissioner of Investigations, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, said the car was speeding in the rain

According to eNCA, Sibiya on 3 May said the three constables, Keamogetswe Buys, Boipelo Senoge and Linda Cebekhulu did not die under suspicious circumstances. He dismissed conspiracy theories surrounding the deaths of the three officers.

Sibiya dismissed claims that they may have been killed because they were investigating a particular crime. The top cop said the trio were part of Operation Vala Umgodi. He said, however, that there was evidence that they were driving recklessly.

TSHWANE, GAUTENG — The National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, said on 1 May 2025 that the car in which the three South African Police Service constables were travelling when they disappeared on 23 April may have flipped over before landing in the Hennops River.

Some netizens commenting on TimesLIVE's Facebook post did not believe that the cops died by accident.

Nhlanhla Wimfana Mnisi said:

"If he means the Polo that I saw in the SAPS flat bed tow truck, then it didn't look like it was an accident, but it looked like it was stripped and cut off, unless the doors flew clean off the car."

Hyrene Esterhuizen asked:

"With the water that strong to cause this much damage on a vehicle, how is it possible that the bodies are found in the vicinity of the wreckage? Wouldn't it be further downstream?"

Ciza Tony asked:

“Mkhwanazi's allegations | Spotlight on Political Killings Task Team: Panel discussion”

https://youtu.be/g-2cJW6ZEcc

Jul 10, 2025 #SABCNews

President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation this Sunday night at 7pm on developments arising from statements made by KwaZulu-Natal Police commissioner, Lt General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi.

Mkhwanazi made corruption allegations against senior police officials and the Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu.

In a statement released by the Presidency, spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says that Ramaphosa has been seized with the matter through consultations and will take the nation into his confidence this weekend.

We have a panel discussion with senior training coordinator on terrorism at the Institute for Security Studies, Willem Els, political analyst Prof Sipho Seepe and security analyst, Andy Mashaile.

15:07 – “I received this morning a copy of Epstein’s little black book. It might not be the full book but it is very interesting none the less. What does Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s cell phone look like?”

16:55 – “Remember KZN has been used by the Central Americas, the Mexicos, the Brazils to drop off contraband, your drugs, off the coast using the harbour there and in that same space, both you and I learning about police officers in 2016 who traveled from Gauteng… to go and collect 600kg of drugs coming into Gauteng and into other parts of SADC. So when he spoke about it, having spent time with you on that report, the powder storm that was released by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime. “It shook me and shocked me to the core of my stomach because I could tell that internationally this has been well known and here’s one person who is responsible for safeguarding the borders and safeguarding the province where the drug dealers internationally happen to play on in terms of drug distribution.”–

20:12 – “Well the ANC’s position has always been to close ranks. Remember if you look at Phala Phala, there was a closing of ranks and coming to the judiciary, they need to be consistent. Whenever we deal with Apartheid crimes, the judiciary will tell us that there should be transparency. On matters that had to do with the President, the judiciary comes up with a different thing. Until we deal with the CR17 funding, then it will remove us from suspecting that some people have been bought. Remember Mogoeng Mogoeng told us that once people give you money, there’ll be payback time. So we hope that this is not payback time. We saw with Phala Phala where the money that came into this country was not declared… Then you ask how did you have so many millions? Are these the rogue police who made sure that this is not known? So what you have here is that in the same way that the ANC closed ranks to protect the President, they expect the President to do the same and this is why he will not easily fire Mchunu who had made sure that the report becomes classified when it comes to Phala Phala. So that is the problem, That’s why we need a thorough investigation by people in society will say these we trust. Not the judges who have also a political agenda… In the same way that we should not end up having a situation where the police are weaponized, where the judiciary is weaponized, where the prosecution is weaponized.”

15:48 – “The first arrest is Paul O’Sullivan because Paul O’Sullivan is assisting criminality. He is assisting criminality, start with him. It comes from the days of Naspers under the National Party, manipulating as they still are.”

17:18 – “The situation in South Africa stems way back from forces unknown and unseen since 1899. It can be related, I am busy researching that. >Vusimuzi Matlala

“The man at the centre of the Mkhwanazi, Mchunu storm: Who is Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala?”

https://capeargus.co.za/news/crime-and-courts/2025-07-09-the-man-at-the-centre-of-the-mkhwanazi-mchunu-storm-who-is-vusimuzi-cat-matlala/#google_vignette

2025/07/09

He’s 49, flamboyant, allegedly corrupt, and rolling in multimillion-rand tenders - Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is making headlines for all the wrong reasons, but who is he?

Known for his flamboyant lifestyle and multimillion-rand state tenders, Matlala has recently become a central figure in explosive allegations of fraud, violent crime, and high-level corruption.

Matlala rose to prominence through a series of lucrative contracts with the South African government. In 2024, his company, Medicare24 Tshwane District, secured a R360 million contract to provide health services to South African Police Service (SAPS) employees.

According to internal documents, the deal generated over R48 million in profits before being abruptly cancelled by National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.

Masemola cited procurement irregularities and alleged that the contract was awarded under questionable circumstances. The SAPS has since launched a full-scale investigation.

The scandal, which was brought to light by whistleblower Babita Deokaran before her assassination in 2021, involved nearly R3 billion in allegedly fraudulent payments. Forensic audits have shown multiple tenders connected to Matlala’s network flagged as suspicious.

In May 2025, Matlala was arrested and charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to kill, stemming from a 2023 plot to assassinate his former partner, actress and entrepreneur Tebogo Thobejane.

His wife, Tsakani Matlala, was also arrested in connection with the plot. Police raids conducted on his property uncovered unlicensed firearms, a R200,000 Rolex watch, and documents linking Matlala to a private security company, CAT VIP Protection, which authorities believe served as a front for broader criminal activities.

Mkhwanazi stated that Matlala was "at the center of a sophisticated criminal syndicate operating at the highest levels of the state."

He accused Matlala of using his fortune to manipulate the political and justice systems for personal protection.

According to Mkhwanazi, “Mr Matlala financially supported high-ranking politicians, funded gala dinners, and paid for travel expenses in exchange for political cover and interference in investigations.”

He further alleged that over 120 criminal case dockets had been compromised or removed under Matlala’s influence.

Mkhwanazi’s claims implicated current Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and former intelligence operative Mogotsi.

While awaiting trial, Matlala remains detained at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria. His incarceration took another twist on Sunday, July 7, when prison authorities discovered a mobile phone hidden in his cell during a surprise search.

Commissioner of Correctional Services Makgothi Thobakgale confirmed the incident, saying, “On Sunday morning, we did a surprise search and we found a cellphone in his possession.”

He added that the device has been handed over to SAPS for further investigation. The presence of the phone has raised fears that Matlala may have been directing operations or communicating with associates from behind bars.

Matlala has since been moved to the C-Max section of the prison and is considered a high-risk inmate.

''Cat Matlala is at C-Max correction facility because of a classification. He is classified as high-risk but also secondly, we continue to do searches, especially these types of searches that we did last night," Thobakgale told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika on Wednesday morning.

Matlala is scheduled to appear in Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on July 11, where he faces charges including attempted murder, conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, and fraud.

Paul O’Sullivan

https://www.timeslive.co.za/sunday-times/news/2018-03-31-the-wrong-guy-why-paul-osullivan-wont-back-down/

01 April 2018

Already, he sinks a chunk of his business profits into his NGO, Forensics For Justice, which conducts pro bono investigations. "I don't really keep a record of what I put into it, because it's my money. It's in the region of R7-million or R8-million." O'Sullivan grew up in a very poor family in rural Ireland. He made a mint in property in London in the 1980s, before moving to South Africa in 1990. Like many a poor kid come good, he clearly savours the prestige that money can bring. But he says he doesn't want to amass it.

He has been married three times, and has seven children. But he refuses to reveal much about his private life, or about his background in Ireland or Britain, fearing that doing so would endanger his extended family.

The journalist Marianne Thamm spent a long time with O'Sullivan to research her book about his exploits, To Catch A Cop (Jacana, 2014). But even she could extract few revelations about his pre-South African life. His father was a stern man - a former colonial policeman, stationed in Palestine and Malaya, who told his son: "If a country is worth living in, it is worth fighting for." That stayed with him.

O'Sullivan ran away from home at age 14, travelled to the UK, and joined the army. He trained as an engineer, and spent six years working for the British government in counter-espionage and counterterrorism. He does not discuss what that involved. But he probably wasn't a stationery clerk.

Later, he saved some cash during a stint with IBM, and invested in property during the mid-1980s housing boom. He nearly got caught up in a tempting tax dodge by a crooked property speculator, who then threatened him for pulling out of the deal. Jack Slipper, a renowned former Scotland Yard investigator, was an old friend of O'Sullivan's father; he intervened to drive off the conman.

For O'Sullivan, it was a big lesson, he told Thamm. "I vowed I would never try to fiddle my taxes or break the law." He said he has a simple test for ethical decisions: "Can I tell my children about what I am doing? If the answer is no, I don't do it."

O'Sullivan's move to South Africa happened in stages. He visited Johannesburg to buy property in 1986, and began spending summers here with his wife and children. The racism disturbed him. "We went to a nightclub in Boksburg or Benoni and there was a comedian on stage and he used this word 'k****r', and I remember thinking: 'I don't think we will stay here until we see a change in the attitude.'"

The release of Nelson Mandela in 1990 swayed him, and he applied for permanent residence that year, as a person of independent means. "I brought in a few million pounds and started getting involved in business."But soon his work took a public turn: he became a police reservist, and in 1996 began training police officers and reservists on the Bill of Rights in the new constitution. One of his students in the late 1990s was a reservist called Cyril Ramaphosa, then a rising tycoon with an interest in community policing. Ramaphosa topped the class.

When O'Sullivan got shot in 1996, his wife wanted to leave South Africa - but he insisted on staying. "I told her: 'Let's rather help fix the country, roll up our sleeves and do what we can.' And I just felt, this country is going in the right direction. I became a citizen, got a passport, and I was proud of being a South African. I even stopped supporting Ireland when they played the Boks at rugby."

“Ian Cameron: Police Capture and State involvement - Cyril fails to draw the line”

https://youtu.be/wFNIRpbUM7Y

Jul 14, 2025

President Cyril Ramaphosa has missed a “golden opportunity to draw the line in the sand” with regards to organised crime. So says Democratic Alliance (DA) Spokesperson on Police, Ian Cameron, in his reaction to the President’s appointment of a Commmissioner of Inquiry to investigate allegations of links between the underworld and the police and politicians. “For us to reach this level of criminality and specifically with regards to organised crime, the only way to get there is essentially through serious State involvement, specific stakeholders in government playing a role to facilitate organised criminal activity…. So, the frustrated look on the President's face last night or the so-called surprise of, wow, is this happening? It's absolute nonsense. They've known about it for so long. And it's because a decision was never made, because there wasn't any form of backbone to actually resolve the issue that we are in the position that we are in now.” Meanwhile there is a “massive information war” raging. “…We mustn't forget that this isn't just a matter of good versus evil. There are significant factional battles inside the South African Police Service, the majority of it being linked to some form or another of politics…,” he adds.

https://www.ewn.co.za/2025/07/14/ramaphosa-establishes-5th-commission-of-inquiry-since-becoming-head-of-state

14 July 2025 | 4:49

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has established his fifth commission of inquiry since becoming head of state, leading to some opposition parties accusing him of indecisive leadership.

When Ramaphosa became president in 2018, he established three commissions of inquiry.

In 2025, he established two.

While the state capture commission was established by President Jacob Zuma, it ran entirely under Ramaphosa’s presidency.

Reactions from political parties have focused on how these commissions have cost the state a lot of money without much return.

“Willem Els: The Commander who trained Genl. Mkhwanazi to handle bombs…”

https://youtu.be/GVN_7Nz6ifY

Jul 13, 2025

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is “not scared of all types of bombs”. So says former police commander Willem Els, who is now with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) as Senior Training Coordinator in the ENACT organised crime programme. Els tells BizNews that the “bomb” dropped by the General last Sunday took “tremendous courage”. Els, who trained the General in Bomb Disposal, described him as a”disciplined officer, a straight talker, a straight shooter, a straight walking” officer who is doing “the right thing as a policeman in his heart, in his actions…”, stressing: “He's a policeman in heart and down to the bone.” Apart from training the General, Els also worked with him on s number of foreign missions, and the two even had to “hot extract” former President Thabo Mbeki and then Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma from a coup in Haiti. They also worked together in Mozambique “where we lifted arms caches and destroyed huge, huge numbers of arms and munitions”, as well as in Equatorial Guinea in preparation of an African Union Summit. Els warns that it would “hurt” President Cyril Ramaphosa “very much” if he deals with the general’s allegations of police-underworld links by using the “old playbook that the ANC (African National Congress) has been using ever since they came to power”. As for threats that black and white citizens could even riot together if the KZN general is not treated right, Els notes there are people who say “we might see a repeat of 2021 if people feel that they're not being listened to…”

6:50 – “We look at criminality in countries in Africa and also in the world but we see South Africa is ranked #3 in Africa when it comes to criminality. It’s only DRC and Nigeria that ranks above us and we are ranked #7 in the world in terms of criminality. If you look at the mafia state index, we are clustered in the upper quadrant with countries like Mexico and Italy.”

19:39 – “But very interesting about General Mkhwanazi If you thing back about 2021, when President Zuma was arrested and was taken to Escort, it was Mkhwanazi who arrested him.”

20:13 – “Now word on the street, some good news, is that some drug cartels have already fled the country since the press conference by the General last Sunday.”

20:26 – “South Africa is known as the southern route. So especially your heroin and now a lot of your methamphetamines and other drugs are also coming from mainly Afghanistan (especially the heroin), Pakistan and then there’s a very interesting paper that is on the website of the ISS called the “Heroine coast” where they went into depth and they investigated the route… basically you’ve got this ancient what they call the Swahili cost and the trading that’t been taking place down the east coast of Africa for 100s of years. Now they’re exploiting that in order to smuggle heroine down through Tanzania and Mozambique to South Africa. Here from South Africa these kingpins then distribute it locally, they distribute it in Africa but also up to Europe and to the US.”

“The heroin coast: A political economy along the eastern African seaboard”

https://globalinitiative.net/analysis/the-heroin-coast-a-political-economy-along-the-eastern-african-seaboard/

Posted on 02 Jul 2018

This report examines the characteristics of the heroin trade off the East African coast and highlights the criminal governance systems that facilitate drug trafficking along these routes.

In recent years, the volume of heroin shipped from Afghanistan along a network of maritime routes in East and southern Africa appears to have increased considerably. Most of this heroin is destined for Western markets, but there is a spin-off trade for local consumption. An integrated regional criminal market has developed, both shaping and shaped by political developments in the region. Africa is now experiencing the sharpest increase in heroin use worldwide and a spectrum of criminal networks and political elites in East and southern Africa are substantially enmeshed in the trade. This report focuses on the characteristics of the heroin trade in the region and how it has become embedded in the societies along this route. It also highlights the features of the criminal governance systems that facilitate drug trafficking along this coastal route.

https://globalinitiative.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/2018-06-27-research-paper-heroin-coast-pdf.pdf

Recommendations

• The East African heroin market forms an integrated regional criminal economy based on the transit of heroin from Afghanistan to the West.

• The transit economy relies on international ports and other infrastructure, and high levels of political protection.

• There is a rapidly growing consumer drug market in the region – one that is much larger than is commonly acknowledged.

• Despite some positive trends in drug users’ ability to access health services in several locations in the region, there are nevertheless gaps in appropriate drug treatment interventions.

Executive summary

Since 2010, several large heroin seizures by the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) – a 32-memberstate naval partnership that conducts maritime security operations aimed at countering terrorism and narcotics smuggling – have confirmed that the eastern African coast is playing a significant role in the global heroin trade.1

So government was not necesasarily just doing a buddy-buddy thing there. Those are powerful people that were being appointed and there’s a history, some were taken from KZN, some were the cronies of connections of Gwede Mantashe and as you know Gwede Mantashe alone is the powerhouse in South African politics and a political bodyguard of Ramaphosa. So Ramaphosa needs to have approvals at those levels to do anything politically. The DA is outside of those power structures.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed police minister Senzo Mchunu on a leave of absence with immediate effect.

Addressing the nation last night, Ramaphosa said he has appointed Prof Firoz Cachalia from Wits University as acting minister of police. Cachalia is also the chairperson of the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council.

He said the commission will be chaired by acting deputy chief justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga. Madlanga will be assisted by advocates Sesi Baloyi SC and Sandile Khumalo SC.

Ramaphosa's decision to establish an inquiry comes after allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi last week, when he alleged Mchunu interfered with sensitive police investigations. He also accused him of protecting controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

Mkhwanazi alleged that Mchunu had ties with people outside the police force — including Matlala and his associate Brown Mogotsi — who influenced his decisions.

South Africa’s history is marked by numerous commissions of inquiry that have focused on investigating corruption, human rights abuses, and systemic failures. While some have made significant contributions to understanding these issues, others have struggled to deliver justice, raising concerns about their effectiveness, costs, and long-term impact.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and established in 1995, was instrumental in addressing apartheid atrocities, fostering national healing through truth-telling, and encouraging dialogue among victims and perpetrators.

However, many critics and some political parties argue that the commission failed in its primary goals of reconciliation and prosecution.

Decades later, the Zondo Commission, set up in 2018 to investigate allegations of state capture involving former President Jacob Zuma and the Gupta family, uncovered widespread corruption at the highest levels of government.

Its findings have led to numerous referrals for prosecution and prompted policy reforms. Yet, despite the hefty price tag - nearly R1 billion, many critics argue that it has yet to produce the expected results.

Other notable inquiries include the Seriti Commission, which investigated the 2012 arms deal but was widely criticised for failing to hold anyone accountable; and the Marikana Commission, which examined the police killing of 34 striking miners in 2012 but resulted in few prosecutions and lingering dissatisfaction among victims’ families.

Experts argue that many commissions have successfully exposed systemic abuses and informed public debate. However, translating these revelations into action remains a persistent challenge.

Critics argue that commissions can serve as political tools rather than genuine agents of reform, citing political interference, limited resources, and the slow pace of follow-up actions as factors diminishing their ability to effect meaningful change.

https://www.concourt.org.za/index.php/judges/current-judges/13-current-judges/77-justice-madlanga

After graduating, he lectured part-time in the Law Faculty of Unitra whilst working for the Department of Justice towards fulfilling his contractual obligations under a government bursary that had funded his LLB studies. He later lectured full-time at Unitra for two years. He proceeded to do an LLM in Human Rights and Constitutional Law, which he received cum laude at the University of Notre Dame in the USA. He interned at the Washington DC office of Amnesty International. On his return, he did pupillage at the Johannesburg Bar. On completion, he opened practice at the Mthatha Bar.

Yet another assignment worth particular mention was Mbuyiseli's appointment as the Chief Evidence Leader of the Marikana Commission of Enquiry. This is a Commission of Inquiry that was appointed to enquire into the killings of 34 striking mine workers and 10 other people in Marikana, near Rustenburg, North West Province in August 2012. In that capacity he was lead counsel in a team of seven advocates, three of whom (including him) were senior counsel. He held numerous other briefs in high profile cases.

At the invitation of the Law School of his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, he held the prestigious Clynes Chair as a visiting professor. This Chair is reserved for distinguished US and international legal scholars and amongst those who have held it are US Supreme Court Justices. In that capacity he offered a two credit three week course from 4 April 2016.

“Cyril Ramaphosa’s Marikana massacre “apology” is disingenuous and dishonest”

https://theconversation.com/cyril-ramaphosas-marikana-massacre-apology-is-disingenuous-and-dishonest-77485

Published: May 11, 2017 12:24pm EDT

South Africa’s Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has “apologised” for his actions in the run up the Marikana massacre when police killed 34 striking mineworkers on August 16, 2012. His supposed apology during a speech at Rhodes University on May 7, 2017 – reportedly followed advice by struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela that he make amends and visit Marikana.

But, was it a proper apology?

Ramaphosa only referred to “language” he used in emails to fellow Lonmin directors, which he said “may have been unfortunate” and “not appropriate”.

• The first intervention was on August 12 2012, when he contacted then minister of police, Nathi Mthethwa, successfully lobbying him to send more police officers to Marikana.

• The second intervention was on August 15, the day before the massacre. We know about this through the flurry of emails that Ramaphosa authored and received. These don’t contain any evidence that he was acting benevolently.

By now there were about 800 police on the ground at Marikana, so no need to lobby for more. The focus of his new role was to persuade Susan Shabangu, then minister of mineral resources, that the Marikana miners were not engaging in a labour dispute but “a dastardly criminal act”.

The significance of this is that if the conflict could be redefined, decisive police action could be justified. Ramaphosa was opposed to negotiations, which could have prevented further loss of blood. Instead, he supported the position of Lonmin and the South African Police Service, which would inevitably lead to deaths. Nobody planned for exactly 34 deaths, but deaths were anticipated, and Ramaphosa’s supposed apology is silent on this.

Certainly two of Lonmin’s vice presidents, Barnard Mokwena and Mark Munroe, were in the loop before the operation got underway. Thus, in my view there’s a prima facie case for charging them with being accessories to murder.

Would they really have kept Ramaphosa in the dark? One reason we don’t know the answer is that Lonmin’s role was inadequately investigated by the commission. The company’s representatives, including Ramaphosa, also only spent short periods at the commission’s witness desk.

In my opinion, there’s enough evidence to charge Ramaphosa under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, a possibility flagged at the inquiry by counsel for injured and arrested persons, Dali Mpofu.

It’s possible that because he was pushing for a murder charge against Ramaphosa, Mpofu lacked the time to pursue this lesser crime. In one of his emails, Ramaphosa tells his Lonmin colleagues:

[d]iscussion with Minister Susan Shabangu –- I called her and told her that her silence and inaction about what is happening at Lonmin was bad for her and the government.

Ramaphosa had been general secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers and, later, as secretary general of the African National Congress he had led his party in talks that brought an end to apartheid. He was a skilled negotiator perfectly positioned to bring a peaceful settlement to the dispute, but instead he aligned himself with Lonmin and the police in their attempt to crush the strike using lethal force.

Advocate Sesi Baloyi, senior council lead an investigation into allegations against GFIS

https://www.politicsweb.co.za/politics/gfis-investigation-in-the-coj-a-mere-smokescreen–

15 April 2024

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is deeply concerned about the apparent manipulation of the Council speaker for political vendettas, and the suppression of reports that could jeopardise the current leadership of the Coalition of Chaos in Johannesburg.

In July of 2023 former Speaker, Colleen Makhubele announced advocate Sesi Baloyi as senior council who would lead an investigation into allegations against the Group Forensics and Investigation Services (GFIS) in the CoJ. To this day, neither Makhubele nor Adv Baloyi have briefed the public on the outcome of that investigation, nor how much money was spent on it. We would dare to argue that there were no substantial findings.

The DA has revealed that Mcebisi Jonas was already rejected by the United States to be South Africa's Special Envoy in May. They rejected his diplomatic visa and told Cyril to send someone else. With two weeks left before the 40% tariffs kick in, things are looking bad for South Africa.

7:55 – “Who would have thought at the end of Jacob Zuma’s term… that Cyril Ramaphosa would come in and prove well you going to miss the days of Jacob Zuma? And here we are. We are literally missing the days of Jacob Zuma. Now I am not trying to praise Jacob Zuma because he was a terrible President but Cyril Ramaphosa is a worse President than Jacob Zuma.”

“South Africa’s downward spiral: a warning for the West | Ernst Roets | EP18”

Jul 13, 2025

Ayaan is joined by Ernst Roets, a South African activist, author, and the founder of a new think tank that seeks to promote a more sustainable political system for his country. He explains how South Africa’s 140+ race-based laws are turning the once prosperous nation into a third world country where not one government department functions properly, convicted felons and rapists are hired as police officers, and women and children cannot walk alone on the streets in broad daylight.
