The whole faking sincerity and honesty thing I think is directly related to why actors were thought of as less than prostitutes before Hollywood. My theory is the real evil fucks couldn't stay in one spot because of the problems they caused, so they went with travelling groups that were never in one place very long, merchants, entertainers and whatnot and they are the reason those groups had/have a bad reputation. It's one thing to want to entertain because you're good at it, make a few bucks off it for your effort, it's another thing entirely to use it to deceive and mislead for politics and power.
