Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s faith has deepened dramatically following what he believes were two near-death experiences last year.

Trump survived two assassination attempts during his 2024 campaign—first in July when a sniper opened fire in Butler, Pa. and second in September while golfing in West Palm Beach, Fla. During an appearance on “Kudlow,” Gingrich said the president now sees divine purpose in his mission to lead the country again.

“I think that’s true, but I’d also point out when he really understood that it was providential that he moved his head at the only possible second to avoid being killed and then realized about a month later somebody else tried to kill him,” Gingrich told Larry Kudlow when the host said Trump has put God back into society.

Gingrich said a second assassination attempt solidified Trump’s sense of calling.

“I know from talking to Speaker Johnson, who prayed with him after that second event, I think Trump is probably profoundly more religious today than he was before he went to Butler, Pennsylvania, because it’s personal,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich compared Trump’s transformation to that of Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II, both of whom were shot and later said God spared them for a mission.

“He said this, sort of, in his inaugural address, that God had spared him for a purpose, and you’ll remember both President Reagan and Pope John Paul the Second had been shot, both thought and compared notes that they had been spared by God for a purpose,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich said Trump increasingly frames his survival as part of a providential plan.

“Their purpose was to defeat the Soviet Empire. I think Trump has decided making America great again is the reason that God saved his life,” Gingrich said.
