Supreme Court's Ketanji Jackson Says Criticizing Judges Is 'Attack On Democracy'

People who criticize activist judges (who often refuse to recuse themselves amid wide-ranging conflicts of interest while ruling against Donald Trump's agenda) are 'attacking democracy,' according to US Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

On May 1, Jackson - who was apparently referring to recent comments by Donald Trump, though not specifically naming him - told an audience at the First Circuit Judicial Conference in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, "The attacks are not random. They seem designed to intimidate those of us who serve in this critical capacity."

"The threats and harassment are attacks on our democracy, on our system of government. And they ultimately risk undermining our Constitution and the rule of law," the Biden appointee continued, referring to "the elephant in the room."

Trump Orders Alcatraz Reopened For "America's Most Ruthless And Violent Offenders"

President Trump on Sunday said that he's ordering the reopening of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary - the historic prison located in the middle of the San Francisco Bay that closed over six decades ago.

"For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering. When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm," Trump said on Truth Social.

"That’s the way it’s supposed to be. No longer will we tolerate these Serial Offenders who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets. That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders," he continued.

Located 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco, Alcatraz Island was purchased in 1846 for $5,000 - after which President Fillmore ordered it turned into a military reservation in 1850. In 1859 it was used to house soldiers convicted of crimes, transitioning into the official military prison for the US Army's Department of the Pacific.

In 1933 the US Department of Justice assumed control of the complex and designated Alcatraz a federal prison the next year - where it housed notorious criminals for the next 29 years, including Al Capone, Doc Barker, and Machine Gun Kelly. It was shuttered in 1963 over high operational costs and building corrosion caused by half a century of being located on an island exposed to saltwater and salt-laden air.

"Both the institution and the men confined within its walls reflect our society during this era," reads the National Park Service's webpage about the prison, also known as The Rock.

According to Trump, the reopening of Alcatraz is going to "serve as a symbol of Law, Order and JUSTICE."

Houthi rebels threaten 'aerial blockade' on Israel; flights canceled en masse

Around 20 foreign airlines have paused flights to Israel, Transport Ministry says; Minister Regev warns Israeli carriers not to raise prices and urges stranded Israelis to contact Foreign Ministry’s emergency center for assistance

Transportation Minister Miri Regev said Sunday evening that the government is working "around the clock" with foreign airlines and aviation authorities to restore international flight service, after a Houthi missile launched from Yemen landed near Ben Gurion Airport and triggered a wave of flight cancellations.

According to the ministry, around 30 foreign carriers are still operating normally at Ben Gurion alongside Israel’s three domestic airlines. However, about 20 airlines have suspended service temporarily for up to 72 hours, following dramatic footage of the missile explosion and heightened security concerns.

The list of suspended carriers includes Ryanair and Delta, which canceled flights through Monday; Wizz Air, Air India, Iberia and the Lufthansa Group (including Swiss and Brussels Airlines), which paused flights until Tuesday; and British Airways and Italy’s ITA, which suspended all flights through Wednesday. United Airlines halted flights until Friday and is reviewing the situation. Air Europa, Air France and Austrian Airlines also canceled select flights on Sunday.

Regev confirmed the missile fell in a field near the airport’s parking access road, injuring several people and causing panic. Ben Gurion resumed full operations within 30 minutes, she said, adding that Israeli aviation authorities are in ongoing contact with global counterparts to bring airlines back.

Ending foreign aid, military assistance could re-orient US-Israel relationship

WASHINGTON WATCH | Slashing military financing will elevate Israel to a “true strategic partnership” with the US, thinks the Heritage Foundation.

Heritage Foundation, those folks who brought us Project 2025, the operating manual for Donald Trump’s chaotic second administration, wants to “reorient” the US-Israel relationship by ending its foreign aid.

These are the geniuses on the far Right who want to expand the power of the president, make the Congress his rubber stamp, slash the size of government by firing tens of thousands of government workers, shred the social safety net, and eliminate foreign aid, among other things.

They insist that “ending Israel’s reliance on US military assistance” by 2047 will strengthen the alliance. Israel currently receives $3.8 billion annually under a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that is up for renewal next year.

The Heritage report gratuitously insists “ending Israel’s reliance on US military financing” would elevate it from a lowly “security aid recipient” to a “true strategic partnership” and “fundamentally change Israel’s geopolitical position within the region.”

That conflicts with longstanding US policy that sees Israel as a critical regional strategic partner in a broad and mutually beneficial partnership. But as Netanyahu’s disruptive reign continues and the war in Gaza shows no sign of ending, that argument will be harder to sustain.

Supporters of aid to Israel argue it is good for the US economy because it is predominantly spent here, creating jobs in the defense industry and elsewhere. Will Israel shop elsewhere? Does Israel, with a standard of living among the highest in the Middle East and rivaling that of Western European nations, really need the US taxpayer subsidy?

But with much of the world – and much of the American public – critical of Israel’s destruction of much of Gaza, will continued US military aid be seen as a violation of the humanitarian principles that have long been a foundation of US foreign aid?

The strategic relationship is built on solid, mutually-beneficial grounds. By any objective measure, pound for pound, the IDF and Israeli intelligence services have no peer. The United States benefits from Israel’s experience, intelligence, and technology as much or more than from any other ally, notwithstanding the massive intelligence failures that led to October 7.

Netanyahu Vows Israel Will Respond Against Houthis And Iran After Missile Attack

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on May 4 afternoon that Israel will respond to the strike on Ben Gurion Airport by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen, as well as to Iran itself, “at a time and place of our choosing.”

The Houthis launched what they described as “a hypersonic ballistic missile” at the airport in the morning. The missile bypassed Israel’s entire air defense array, in addition to a United States-operated Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery, before hitting the airport. Six people were reportedly wounded.

This was the 27th such attack by the Houthis since Israel renewed its offensive in the Gaza Strip on March 18. All previous missiles fell short, or were intercepted.

The attack came amid a large-scale U.S. operation against the Houthis. More than 800 targets of the group have been hit since the start of the operation on March 15, with Houthi-run health authorities reporting more than 250 casualties, including women and children.

“Attacks by the Houthis emanate from Iran. Israel will respond to the Houthi attack against our main airport AND, at a time and place of our choosing, to their Iranian terror masters,” Netanyahu wrote on the X social network, attaching a March 17 post by U.S. President Donald Trump with a warning to Iran that Washington will retaliate to Houthi attacks by addressing Tehran directly.

The Foreign Ministry reiterates Netanyahu’s message, writing in a separate post: “The Houthi attacks are Iranian attacks — Iran uses them as a proxy to spread terror and undermine the regional and global order.

“The world must hold Iran accountable for these attacks,” says the ministry, adding that “Israel has the right to defend itself, and it will exercise this right at a time of its choosing.”

Netanyahu’s threat came exactly three weeks into indirect nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran. Despite the talks, Wshington itself warned Tehran recently against continuing to back the Houthis.

On April 30, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Iran that it will face consequences for supporting the group.

“Message to IRAN: We see your LETHAL support to The Houthis. We know exactly what you are doing,” Hegseth wrote on X. “You know very well what the US Military is capable of — and you were warned. You will pay the CONSEQUENCE at the time and place of our choosing.”

Israel has always followed through with such threats to Iran, although the effectiveness of its only two direct attacks on the Islamic Republic last year were questioned.

Recent reports unveiled Israeli and American plans for a possible joint attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. Israel will not likely go this far in its upcoming response to the Houthi missile attack. However, the situation could escalate quickly as Tehran is guaranteed to hit back.
