First experience with death was when I was 3. In the late 70s it was common for parents to send the kids outside unsupervised. A bunch of kids around the same age roaming the neighborhood having fun. One kid had their dog with them. Ended up in a neighbor's yard that wasn't home but had a rabbit in a pen, so everyone went to see the rabbit. The dog went ballistic upon seeing the rabbit and started barking and pacing back in forth in front of the cage. In my mind at that time it seemed like the dog wanted to play with the rabbit, so I started lifting the door of the pen. The dog got it's snout under the pen door and squeezed into the cage and I dropped the door, leaving both of them in there to "play." Don't remember much after that, but I do remember a lot of yelling, adults opening the door, and myself standing over the rabbit as it bolted a small distance from the cage and then just fell on its side, laying there, panting fast, bleeding, and a terrified look in its eyes that I still can't shake to this day. I watched it stop breathing. There was also a small patch on its haunch that had the fur removed, showing meat underneath. I remember thinking to myself then that it looked like the uncooked chicken from the store that my parents would buy. It wasn't Watership Down that fucked me up when I was young in regards to rabbits, that was just the capstone. Needless to say I and the rest of the kids got in a bunch of shit for that. Dad bought the neighbor a new rabbit though seeing as I was the one that lifted the door of the pen.
