SOVIET VENUS PROBE UPDATE: The Soviet Union's old Kosmos 482 Venus probe (which never reached Venus) is returning to Earth today. Best estimates predict a reentry on May 10th at 06:35 +/- 3.7h UTC. If reentry happens around 6:00 UTC, it will be over Europe in morning daylight. Check Marco Langbroek's blog for updates.

As this is a lander that was designed to survive passage through the Venus atmosphere, it is possible that it will survive reentry through the Earth atmosphere intact, and impact intact. It likely will be a hard impact: I doubt the parachute deployment system will still work after 53 years and with dead batteries. There are many uncertain factors in whether the lander will survive reentry though, including that this will be a long shallow reentry trajectory, and the age of the object.

the guy that owns the channel i was watching says it crashed just because ESA said they lost track of it.. both my sat trackers are still tracking it, theres not much on X about a crash in europe as ESA is claiming, can anyyone verify?
