The Surface of Venus from Venera 14

If you could stand on Venus – what would you see? Pictured is the view from Venera 14, a robotic Soviet lander which parachuted and air-braked down through the thick Venusian atmosphere in March of 1982. The desolate landscape it saw included flat rocks, vast empty terrain, and a featureless sky above Phoebe Regio near Venus' equator. On the lower left is the spacecraft's penetrometer used to make scientific measurements, while the light piece on the right is part of an ejected lens-cap. Enduring temperatures near 450 degrees Celsius and pressures 75 times that on Earth, the hardened Venera spacecraft lasted only about an hour. Although data from Venera 14 was beamed across the inner Solar System over 40 years ago, digital processing and merging of Venera's unusual images continues even today. Recent analyses of infrared measurements taken by ESA's orbiting Venus Express spacecraft indicate that active volcanoes may currently exist on Venus.

NASA erases Nazi-linked engineer from official records amid public backlash

May 11, 2025

After decades of commemorating Dr. Kurt Heinrich Debus — a former SS officer and Nazi rocket engineer who later became a key figure in the U.S. space program — NASA has removed his name from official displays and added a disclaimer to his biography.

Debus, the first director of what is now Kennedy Space Center in Florida, was never prosecuted for his role in the Nazi regime.

He was deeply involved in Germany’s V-2 rocket project, which used forced labor from concentration camp prisoners and targeted civilian areas in the UK and elsewhere.

Despite this history, his name remained on NASA facilities for years with little public scrutiny.

The conference hall that bore his name, the Dr. Kurt H. Debus Conference Facility, was recently renamed the Heroes and Legends Conference Facility.

A spokesperson for Kennedy Space Center said the new name “reflects the contributions of many throughout history who helped establish the United States as a global leader in space exploration.”

While no formal reason was provided, the timing follows growing public awareness and media coverage of Debus’s Nazi past.

Though credited with helping lead the Apollo program and the first manned moon landing, Debus’s Nazi affiliations were largely ignored for decades.

Until recently, his NASA biography made no mention of terms like “Nazi,” “Third Reich,” or “SS,” instead vaguely referring to his work on a “rocket research program at Peenemunde.”

In reality, Peenemunde was the heart of Nazi Germany’s V-2 missile program. Roughly 10,000 forced laborers — primarily from the Dora-Mittelbau concentration camp — died building the rockets.

Debus, an electrical engineer by training, was not just a participant in the program; he was an SS officer with the rank of Sturmbannfuhrer (major) and a staunch Nazi loyalist.

According to historians, he even reported a colleague to the Gestapo for failing to salute him with a Nazi greeting.

After the war, Debus was neither investigated nor tried. He was among hundreds of German scientists brought to the U.S. under Operation Paperclip, a secret American initiative to recruit Nazi-era experts to gain an edge over the Soviet Union.

The operation, which included former SS members, was approved at the highest levels of government despite objections from Jewish groups and internal opposition within the U.S. defense establishment.

Debus was granted U.S. citizenship and held senior positions in the space program. Known among peers for his technical vision, he helped transition the U.S. from experimental launches to manned missions.

He led the launch center at Merritt Island, Florida, which in 1968 was officially renamed Kennedy Space Center.

Even after his death in 1983, Debus remained a celebrated figure within NASA circles.

In addition to the facility named after him, an official “Debus Award” was given annually to aerospace leaders in Florida.

In 2022, the award was presented to then-Kennedy Center director Janet Petro, who praised Debus’s contributions to Apollo without mentioning his Nazi past.

NASA’s decision to erase his name came shortly after American media reports criticized the agency for whitewashing Debus’s biography.

In response, NASA updated the online biography, renamed the conference hall and rebranded the award.

Although no public statement was issued, Debus’s name has been removed from official events and visitor materials now reflect the new policy.

With Debus’s name now largely gone from institutional memory, only one prominent Nazi figure remains officially commemorated in U.S. space history: Wernher von Braun.

Often referred to as the “father of the American space program,” von Braun was also a key architect of the V-2 missile and a former SS officer.

In 2021, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama — affiliated with the Smithsonian — removed a statue and quote attributed to von Braun.

However, multiple facilities in the city, including research centers, a science symposium and a performance hall, still bear his name in partnership with NASA-linked institutions like the University of Alabama.

Climate change causes South Africa to mysteriously rise instead of sink. NASA helps find why

May 10, 2025 19:14 EDT

Scientists from the University of Bonn have discovered that South Africa is slowly lifting—by up to two millimeters per year—not because of deep underground activity, but due to a loss of water.

The research, published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, suggests that severe droughts are causing the land to rise, challenging earlier ideas about mantle movement.

South Africa has a network of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) base stations that monitor land elevation. Between 2012 and 2020, data showed that parts of the country had risen by about six millimeters.

Many scientists thought this was caused by mantle flow and dynamic topography, believing that a plume—a tube-like structure carrying hot material from deep inside Earth—was pushing the land upward.

However, researchers led by Dr. Makan Karegar explored a different idea: Could drought-related water loss be responsible? The team studied daily GPS height data from 2000 to 2021, using singular spectral analysis (SSA) to filter out noise and focus on long-term trends.

To understand the role of water in land movement, the team estimated water mass loading—how water weight affects the Earth's surface—using a grid system.

They based their calculations on the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM), which describes how the Earth responds to changes.

The results showed a strong connection between water loss and land uplift. Data from NASA's GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellite mission, which measures changes in gravity related to water storage, also supported this.

Even though GRACE provides low-resolution readings, its data revealed that areas losing the most water were also rising the fastest.

When comparing GPS-based water storage estimates with GRACE satellite data and hydrological models, the researchers found high correlations—up to 90% and 94% on a monthly scale across different regions.

Long-term trends also matched up well, with correlations of 46% and 53%, giving further proof that drought-driven water loss is the main reason for South Africa’s uplift.

The study explains that when water leaves the land, the surface expands—similar to how a foam ball regains its shape when you stop squeezing it.

Before the droughts, underground water applied pressure that kept the land compressed. As these reserves dried up, the crust responded by rising.

This discovery could help scientists track drought severity using GPS receivers, which provide accurate information on groundwater depletion.

Since much of the world’s fresh water is stored underground, these measurements could give early warnings about water shortages.

South Africa has faced major water crises, including the severe drought from 2015 to 2019, when Cape Town was close to "Day Zero", meaning taps could run dry.

With climate change expected to alter rainfall patterns, the risk of future water shortages is high.

According to Karegar, “This data also showed that the land uplift could primarily be explained by drought and the associated loss of water mass.”

The researchers hope this method will help policymakers make better decisions about water use, especially in areas where supplies are running low.

By studying how environmental changes affect the land, scientists can improve water management strategies and better prepare for future challenges.

If droughts continue, South Africa’s gradual land uplift could become an even clearer warning sign of a worsening water crisis.

NASA Is Increasing Employee Location Tracking

May 10, 2025

It would seem that DOGE is tracking NASA employees as they come – and go – at NASA Headquarters.

And if they are doing it there then you can expect that this will be done across the agency. And that is the plan.

Back in March I posted “Is NASA A.I. Facial Recognition Technology Watching You?

Why?” which noted an article about the use of Clearview AI – an OSINT (open source intelligence) platform for facial recognition being used at NASA.

Why does NASA need to be using this? Who or what are they looking for? What are they tracking?

According to sources there is a new DOGE-imposed requirement across NASA. The exact timing of its implementation is not clear.

Presently, to enter a NASA facility you need to use a PIV (Personal Identity Verification) card – a smart card with a computer chip in it.

DOGE is telling NASA to implement additional tracking of employees for efficiency purposes and that employees will need to use the PIV card to exit a facility as well. In other words its a virtual time card.

NASA HQ currently tracks entry and exit activity for its employees. The system reportedly tracks people as to whether they show up for work at HQ or that the entry/exit gap is outside a set parameter.

Employees who trip certain values get a red mark which is matched up to their leave requests and they end up on a list.

First experiment on planarian regeneration conducted at China's space station

2025-05-11 15:11 Last Updated At 19:17

The Shenzhou-20 crew has carried out its first experiment on planarian regeneration aboard China's space station.

Planarians, flatworms with an evolutionary history spanning over 520 million years, are one of the widely used experimental animal models in biological research.

These organisms demonstrate an exceptional capacity for tissue repair: when bisected, planarians can regenerate lost muscles, skin, intestines, and even an entire brain from each segment – a process that can be repeated indefinitely.

Researchers aim to investigate how the space environment affects the regenerative processes and physiological behavior of planarians.

They will also explore the molecular mechanisms behind space-induced effects on planarian regeneration, thereby advancing scientists' understanding of regenerative biology.

Inside the Wentian laboratory module, the Shenzhou-20 crew observed samples in the biotechnology experiment cabinet and used the scientific glovebox to collect solid culture samples.

The collected data and samples will assist researchers on Earth in studying the microbial mechanisms affecting cell tissue culture modules.

This initiative follows the successful inclusion of zebra fish and fruit flies in science experiments conducted aboard China's space station.

The Shenzhou-20 crew will carry out 59 additional space science experiments and technology tests in fields such as space life science, microgravity physics, and new space technologies, with potential breakthroughs in cultivation of vascularized brain organoid chips, soft matter non-equilibrium dynamics, and high-temperature superconducting material preparation.
