Wisconsin Judge Pleads Not Guilty After Grand Jury Indictment, Claims 'Judicial Immunity' For Hiding Illegal From ICE

A Wisconsin judge pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to charges that she obstructed federal agents seeking to detain an illegal immigrant in her courtroom.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan entered her plea during a Wednesday morning arraignment in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, one day after she was indicted by a federal grand jury following her April arrest by the FBI on charges that she helped Eduardo Flores-Ruiz and his attorney slide out the side of her courtroom on April 18 when ICE agents showed up to arrest him.

Dugan was charged with obstructing or impeding a proceeding before a department or agency of the United States and concealing an individual to prevent his discovery and arrest.

The two-page indictment accuses Dugan of confronting members of ICE and lying to them about needing a judicial warrant to conduct their operation. Dugan faces a maximum penalty of 6 years in prison and up to $350,000 in fines.

On Wednesday, Dugan claimed 'judicial immunity' - citing President Trump's Supreme Court ruling from last year.

"The problems with this prosecution are legion, but most immediately, the government cannot prosecute Judge Dugan because she is entitled to judicial immunity for her official acts," her lawyers wrote in a motion filed on Wednesday. "Immunity is not a defense to the prosecution to be determined later by a jury or court; it is an absolute bar to the prosecution at the outset," they wrote, citing Trump v. United States.

In her motion to dismiss, Dugan’s lawyers quote from the Trump immunity ruling, where it said, “In dividing official from unofficial conduct, courts may not inquire into the President’s motives.” They quoted that line to support the argument that her “subjective motivations are irrelevant to immunity.” They also cite the Trump immunity ruling’s quotation of a prior precedent that said the essence of immunity is the immunity possessor not having to answer for their conduct in court. “Judge Dugan therefore has both immunity from conviction and immunity from prosecution,” they wrote. -MSNBC

Ukraine Will Never Recognize Occupied Territories As Russia, Zelensky Says From Turkey

Update(1105ET): "We don’t yet know the official level of Russians, but from what we see, it looks phony," Zelensky told reporters in Ankara. So despite the Ukrainian leader earlier declaring "I am here" upon landing in Turkey, he is not in fact at the Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul.

This 'I am here' yet not actually 'there' charade generated some contradictory headlines earlier on Thursday. Zelensky continues his performative gestures aimed at impressing one man: Trump. He even explained that he is sending Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to head the Ukrainian delegation for the Istanbul meeting, now likely underway, out of respect for Trump and the peace process he initiated.

The Kremlin side meanwhile says it's ready to make compromises:

The head of the Russian delegation in Istanbul, Vladimir Medinsky, told Russian state media RIA that Moscow was “ready for discussions.”

“We are ready for discussions, for resuming the Istanbul negotiations; we are prepared for possible compromises and their discussion,” Medinsky said, referring to the last known direct talks between Russia and Ukraine that took place in Istanbul in the spring of 2022.

But apparently not on the table is the only thing which could actually end this tragic war - territorial concessions:

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv will never recognize parts of Ukraine that are currently occupied as parts of Russia, as he confirmed peace talks are set to go ahead.

“In all discussions – and I emphasize this – and this is my unwavering position – we do not legally recognize any of our temporarily occupied territories as Russian. This is the Ukrainian land,” Zelensky told journalists.

White House Has Presented Iran With Written Nuke Deal Proposal In Huge First

Update(10:30ET): With President Trump and his envoy having arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the last leg of the president's Gulf tour, new details of behind the scenes US-Iran negotiations have come to light on Thursday.

In a huge first, the Trump White House has sent Iran a written proposal toward forging a new nuclear deal. White House envoy Steve Witkoff has led several rounds of talks, and Axios has revealed that the communication was issued to Tehran last Sunday.

"Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi took the proposal back to Tehran for consultations with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian and other top officials," writes Axios.

It was the Iranian side which initiated the swap of written proposals first, as the talks which have been on since April went from 'indirect' to more 'direct':

During the third round of talks in late April, Araghchi gave Witkoff an updated document with Iranian ideas for a nuclear deal. This time, Witkoff took the document.

A U.S. team of experts studied it and sent the Iranians a list of questions and requests for clarification. The Iranians replied and added questions of their own, two sources said.

Meanwhile, Witkoff and his team prepared a U.S. proposal laying out the Trump administration's parameters for an Iranian civilian nuclear program and requirements for monitoring and verification, the sources said.

It appears that thus far both sides have received the other's written proposals positively, and that's what was driving President Trump's "olive branch" comments on Tuesday. He had stressed while speaking in Saudi Arabia that "this is not an offer that will last forever. The time is right now for them to choose."

President Trump followed up on Thursday by saying from Qatar, "We're in very serious negotiations with Iran for long-term peace," according to AFP.

He said, "We're getting close to maybe doing a deal without having to do this… there (are) two steps to doing this, there is a very, very nice step and there is the violent step, but I don't want to do it the second."

Trump's comments followed an NBC News interview with Ali Shamkhani, a top political, military and nuclear adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who said Tehran is prepared to sign a nuclear deal—provided key conditions are met—in exchange for the lifting of U.S. economic sanctions.

While the total approvals for 2026 are lower than the peak years under the former Biden government, data shows 120,141 H-1B visas have been accepted for the next year. This is about equivalent to the total number of H-1Bs approved for 2021, cleared during the final year of President Donald J. According to Die Welt, the document almost entirely relied on public comments made by AfD politicians rather than any undisclosed information obtained through other means. Thus, it appears that the case to brand the country’s second-largest party and the official opposition to the government as an extremist group, which would allow for mass surveillance of the entire party — as has already been done against local branches of the AfD — was built on political opinions.

The paper of record noted that much of the so-called evidence consisted of statements which the political spy agency felt were “incompatible with human dignity” by allegedly espousing “ethnic nationalist, anti-foreign and anti-minority, anti-Muslim and anti-Islamic and anti-Semitic positions.”

The BfV reportedly claimed that AfD Thuringia leader Björn Höcke’s comments condemning the influence of “globalists” and “financial elites” in conjunction with describing the German government as their “puppets”, demonstrated an example of antisemetic rhetoric. The document is said to have quoted a 2022 speech, in which he said that the politicians in Berlin were not “German patriots” but rather “globalist speech puppets” who act in the interest of “large American corporations and for globalist masterminds.”

That’s more than $3.4 million in direct funding for abortion travel.

Israel responded with a military campaign to destroy Hamas, topple its regime, and free the hostages.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called Israel a “genocidal state” while speaking in the Spanish parliament on Wednesday, saying that Madrid “does not do business” with such a country.

The comments sparked anger in Israel, and the Foreign Ministry summoned the Spanish ambassador to Israel for a dressing down.

“Following the severe remarks made by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish ambassador to Israel has been summoned for a reprimand meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem tomorrow,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

According to Spanish media reports, this was the first time Sanchez had called Israel “genocidal,” a term that far-left parties in the country use frequently to refer to the Jewish state over its actions during the war in Gaza, and one that Israel categorically rejects.

Spain is a long-time critic of Israel’s policies toward Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, and has outraged Jerusalem by recognizing Palestinian statehood last May, as did Norway and Ireland.

Malaysia records fewest births ever.

Malaysia’s birth rate has plummeted to its lowest level ever recorded, signaling a deepening demographic crisis. The Statistics Department (DOSM) has confirmed that live births in the first quarter of 2025 fell 11.5 percent compared to the same period last year. The total number of newborns dropped to 93,500, down from 105,613 in early 2024.

The decline is part of a broader trend that has been unfolding for years. Fertility rates have been steadily falling, with fewer women choosing to have children. Economic pressures, shifting social norms, and concerns over financial stability are driving couples to delay or forgo parenthood altogether.

The numbers paint a stark picture. Male babies outnumbered female newborns, with 48,124 boys born compared to 45,376 girls. The sex ratio stood at 106 males for every 100 females. Selangor recorded the highest number of births at 18,254, while Labuan had the lowest at 278.

The majority of mothers who gave birth in the first quarter were between 30 and 39 years old, accounting for 53.3 percent of all births. Women aged 20 to 29 made up 39.3 percent, while those 40 and older represented 6 percent. Only 1.4 percent of births came from mothers under 20 years old, and three babies were born to mothers aged 55 and above.

Ethnic breakdowns reveal further shifts. Malays accounted for 68.8 percent of all live births, while births among Chinese and Indian communities continued to decline. The U.S. Nuclear Base Hidden Under Greenland’s Ice for Decades

Rediscovered Camp Century reveals the extent of Washington’s longtime involvement in the Arctic island

While flying above the Arctic Circle last spring, a team of NASA scientists testing a new radar system over northern Greenland detected something unusual.

Deep into the ice sheet, their instruments showed, sat a cluster of settlements connected by a network of tunnels, like a bygone civilization frozen in time.

“It’s like flying over another planet, and it’s hard to imagine anyone or anything ever being able to survive there,” said NASA scientist Chad Greene, who was on the plane.

What the scientists saw on their screens wasn’t a lost civilization but remnants of a U.S. military base built under the ice during the Cold War.

The base was part of an ambitious and clandestine Pentagon plan, known as Project Iceworm, to build a network of nuclear-missile launch sites beneath the Arctic ice. The underground site, which was designed to store 600 medium-range ballistic missiles, reveals the extent of U.S. involvement in Greenland going back over half a century.

Camp Century, as the outpost was called, was partially constructed in 1959, and abandoned in 1967 after the ice sheet was deemed too unstable to support the proposed missile-launch network. Over the years, ice accumulated and the facility is now buried under at least 100 feet of ice.

The camp was known to some before the recent National Aeronautics and Space Administration overflight as an ostensible research facility, but its real military purpose was classified until 1996. Greene and his colleagues captured the first full picture of the camp in its entirety in December.

More than just a relic of Cold War folly, Camp Century is a reminder of the U.S.’s longstanding presence on the Danish territory of Greenland, a position that at times has been controversial. Historically, to maintain sovereignty over Greenland, Denmark has had to relinquish part of the territory to the U.S.

President Trump has gone even further. Trump has criticized Denmark for failing to adequately secure Greenland, the world’s largest island, and threatened to take the territory by force in the name of American national security.

The U.S. already has the right to establish bases in Greenland if it wishes to do so, according to a 1951 treaty with Denmark that enabled it to construct Camp Century, something Danish politicians have reminded Washington of publicly in recent weeks.

Officials in Greenland and Denmark have attempted to fend off Trump by demonstrating they are open to an enhanced American military presence while rejecting a full U.S. takeover of the territory.

At one point during the Cold War, the U.S. maintained 17 bases in Greenland, including Camp Century, and kept about 10,000 troops there. Today, the number of forces has shrunk to fewer than 200 in one base, the Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as the Thule Air Base.

The presence of U.S. nuclear weapons has historically been a source of friction with Denmark. The U.S. military at the time didn’t disclose Camp Century’s nuclear-related purpose to Copenhagen, a self-declared nuclear-free zone.

The Bogus Habeas-Corpus Argument

Suspending the right to challenge the legality of one’s detention in court would shred a core tenet of the Constitution, writes Marjorie Cohn.

If White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller is to be believed, Team Trump is poised to drive another stake through the heart of the Constitution.

On May 9, Miller told reporters that the administration is considering whether to suspend the right to habeas corpus – known as “The Great Writ” – in immigration cases. Suspending habeas corpus, which allows individuals to challenge the legality of their detention in court, would be unconstitutional.

The Suspension Clause, located in Article I, Section 9, Clause 2 of the Constitution, says:

“The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.”

In light of the several recent losses the administration has suffered in immigration cases, Miller said it is now pondering the suspension of habeas corpus. He declared:

“Well, the Constitution is clear. And that, of course, is the supreme law of the land, that the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in a time of invasion. So … that’s an option we’re actively looking at.

Look, a lot of it depends on whether the courts do the right thing or not. At the end of the day, Congress passed a body of law known as the Immigration Nationality Act which stripped Article III courts, that’s the judicial branch, of jurisdiction over immigration cases.

So Congress actually passed what’s called jurisdiction stripping legislation. It passed a number of laws that say that the Article III courts aren’t even allowed to be involved in immigration cases.”

As Georgetown law professor Steve Vladeck points out, “To casually suggest that habeas might be suspended because courts have ruled against the executive branch in a handful of immigration cases is to turn the Suspension Clause entirely on its head.”

Moreover, Miller’s alarming declaration contains several legal and factual errors.

Only Congress Has the Power to Suspend Habeas Corpus

Contrary to Miller’s assertion, only Congress — not the president — can suspend habeas corpus, and only in rare circumstances.

“Although [the Suspension Clause] does not state that suspension must be effected by, or authorized by, a legislative act, it has been so understood, consistent with English practice and the Clause’s placement in Article I,” Justice Antonin Scalia wrote in dissent in the Supreme Court’s 2004 decision in Hamdi v. Rumsfeld. (Article I of the Constitution lists the powers of Congress).

Amy Coney Barrett, a current member of the Supreme Court, agrees with Scalia. When she was a judge on the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, she and Neal K. Katyal, a professor at Georgetown Law Center, wrote for National Constitution Center: “The Clause does not specify which branch of government has the authority to suspend the privilege of the writ, but most agree that only Congress can do it.”

Portland to pay BLM-Antifa agitator $375,000 settlement after she was hit in foot with non-lethal rubber ball during 2020 riot

The city of Portland has reached a settlement with a non-binary leftist activist who allegedly sustained injuries from a police crowd control munitition during a BLM-Antifa riot in 2020. Meghan Lea Opbroek, 41, will receive a $375,000 payout from the city, according to court records.

Opbroek arrived at the violent Antifa demonstration around 1 am on June 26, 2020, and was hit on the foot roughly ten minutes later with a less-lethal crowd control munition device when Portland Police officers attempted to disperse the unruly crowd. Authorities declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, citing "life safety issues" after rioters began moving dumpsters and large barriers around the police bureau's north precinct.

One person could be hearing yelling that the protesters were going to burn down the precinct, the Oregonian reported.

Opbroek claimed in the April 2022 suit filed in the US District Court in Oregon that she saw police fire flashbang grenades and impact munitions directly into the crowd. She stood next to rioters and filmed police. Opbroek claimed that an officer fired a projectile at her feet when she started to walk away from the crowd. The less-lethal munition was a rubber ball distraction device that detonates and disperses rubber pellets, according to the publication.

She allegedly sustained a traumatic brain injury and injuries to her legs and chest, which resulted in nerve damage that reportedly left her unable to work as an academic and career adviser. Oproek also claimed she had to shut down her therapy practice as a result.

Her attorneys claimed in a statement that the case was about "police throwing a bomb at a protester who was walking away."

Opbroek testified to city councilors, saying, "There wasn't an aspect of my life that wasn't impacted by this experience of violence and I think that there needs to be more done to protect protesters." City councilors voted unanimously to approve the civil settlement.

A new state law prohibits police from using rubber ball distraction devices, and authorities told city councilors on Tuesday that the PPB no longer uses them.

This payout follows one of several given to individuals who actively participated in the infamous 2020 BLM-Antifa riots following the police-involved death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The riots desecrated downtown Portland for several months. The majority of the settlements stemmed from criminal rioters being injured by police when officers attempted to disperse crowds. The city of Portland and Department of Justice (DOJ) has since given millions of dollars to rioters via settlements. In November, the city gave a $400,000 settlement to Antifa extremist, Dustin Brandon Ferreira, after he claimed an officer used excessive force to detain him during one of the riots.

3M Settles New Jersey's 'Forever Chemicals' Contamination Lawsuit For $450 Million

Chemical manufacturer 3M has entered into a settlement agreement with New Jersey to resolve claims accusing the company of contaminating water and other natural resources with PFAS substances, popularly known as “forever chemicals,” the state Attorney General’s office said in a May 13 statement.

The settlement, valued at up to $450 million and subject to court approval, is the “largest statewide PFAS settlement in New Jersey history,” said the statement. It resolves certain lawsuits filed by the state against the company in 2019.

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are used in fabric, furniture, industrial products, and several household items. Known as “forever chemicals” because of their inability to degrade over time, these substances continue to accumulate in human beings and the environment.

The chemicals have been found in drinking water, livestock, and food packaging, and are linked to several adverse health issues such as cancers, endocrine disorders, developmental issues in fetuses, and negative impacts on reproduction and immune function.

The settlement amount will be paid over a period of 25 years, with around $275 million to $325 million scheduled to be paid between 2026 and 2034, and the remainder between 2035 and 2050.

The first lawsuit on the matter was a complaint filed in March 2019. It alleged that New Jersey sustained environmental damage from 3M’s role in contaminating the Chambers Works site in Pennsville and Carneys Point in Salem County.

The second lawsuit, also filed in March 2019, made similar claims against the company’s Parlin facility in Sayreville in Middlesex County.

A third complaint was filed against 3M and other manufacturers in May 2019, citing environmental damage and violation of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act. This was related to the manufacture and sale of certain products that allegedly contained or broke down into PFAS chemicals.

With the settlement agreement, all these lawsuits are now resolved.

“For decades, 3M knew that their PFAS chemicals were forever contaminating the New Jersey environment. But they continued to pollute the environment and escape accountability. That ends now,” said Attorney General Matthew Platkin.

“New Jersey has some of the highest levels of PFAS in the country. That’s why New Jersey has been leading the national charge against corporate polluters who contaminate our drinking water and harm our state’s communities.”

The move only suggests that the Trump administration is preparing to ramp up mass deportations and fulfill the mandate the American voter gave him: restore national security through the deportation of criminal illegal aliens.

Last month, on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "I'm doing what I was elected to do, remove criminals from our Country, but the Courts don't seem to want me to do that," adding, "We cannot give everyone a trial, because to do so would take, without exaggeration, 200 years."

ANew Jersey couple is facing federal charges over jaw-dropping accusations of sex trafficking, forced labor, and exploiting vulnerable church members under the guise of divine will.

Treva Edwards, 60, and Christine Edwards, 63, were arrested May 7. The couple were indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit forced labor. Treva Edwards also was hit with charges of forced labor and sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion.

Treva Edwards reportedly subjected one alleged female victim to repeated physical and sexual assaults and impregnated her, after which he ordered her to get an abortion, according to the indictment.

The United States Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey said in a statement that the husband and wife were the "founders and pastors of a church they named 'Jesus Is Lord by the Holy Ghost,' which they operated out of a multi-unit apartment building in Orange, New Jersey, and where they conspired to coax and coerce vulnerable victims to work with no pay."

Alina Habba, interim U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey — previously an attorney for President Donald Trump — delivered a stern warning to those contemplating committing human trafficking crimes.

"These charges are an example of my office's tireless commitment to combatting human trafficking in our community," Habba proclaimed. "If you engage in human trafficking, we will find you, and we will prosecute you. We are committed to working alongside our partners to ensure that those who target the most vulnerable are brought to justice."

Thousands Flee in Gaza City After Israel Issues Mass Displacement Orders and Vows to Attack ”With Great Force”

The scenes of mass displacement on Wednesday were like a slow-moving human flood flowing through destroyed streets.

On Wednesday, the Israeli military warned it would attack parts of Gaza City “with great force” and issued new displacement orders targeting several areas in the central and western neighborhoods of the city. Thousands of displaced families in Gaza City began fleeing their shelters in the evening in a state of panic and chaos.

The displacement orders came several hours after Israel committed yet another horrific massacre, bombing five homes in Jabaliya, killing more than 50 Palestinains, including 22 children and 18 women. Israel is on a rampage of bombardment across Gaza—at least 77 killed on Wednesday, over 100 today. On Tuesday, Israel bombed two hospitals in one day, while the third month of a total blockade has left everyone in Gaza hungry and thirsty. Hundreds of thousands of people, many of them children, are facing starvation.

According to a map posted online by the Israeli military, the areas targeted with displacement orders are home to at least eight schools, some run by UNRWA—including the Al-Shati school complex, Al-Karmel School, Mustafa Hafez School, the Al-Furqan school complex, and Islamic University—that serve as shelters for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians already displaced from northern and eastern parts of the enclave.

The orders also include the area where al-Shifa hospital—the largest medical complex in the Gaza Strip—is located. Hundreds of wounded and sick patients are getting treatment and seeking shelter in the hospital.

The scenes of mass displacement on Wednesday were like a slow-moving human flood flowing through destroyed streets. The roar of warplanes combined with the buzzing drones overhead. Men carried what little belongings they could: torn sleeping mats, dusty blankets, and tattered bags. Women walked behind them, carrying or followed by children. Some of the children were walking barefoot, and others dragged their school bags filled with clothes and a few bottles of water. Families headed north, toward the neighborhoods of Al-Nasr and Sheikh Radwan, which were already densely packed and struggling to accommodate people displaced from other areas.

On the side of a road in the al-Nasr neighborhood, 42-year-old Islam Obeid sat with her five children under an old sheet of cloth, trying to find some shelter.

"This is the fourteenth time we have fled from under bombardment since the war began in October 2023,” Obeid told Drop Site. “There is no safe place left in Gaza. Where should we go? Even the streets are closing in on us."

Her family was first forced to flee from the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in eastern Gaza City, where they lived before the war. Since then, they have been moving between schools and displacement camps, each time chased by displacement orders and the sounds of falling bombs.

Her 12-year-old son, Mahmoud, stood barefoot beside her, carrying his little sister on his shoulders. "Before the war, I used to go to school,” he said. “Today, I carry my sister and look for a tent with her. We are tired." He looked at his mother and continued: "I want to live in a house that protects us. I don’t want more displacement, running, and homelessness."

A nearby explosion interrupted their conversation, prompting the mother to clutch her children in fear. "We are not numbers. We are mothers, sons, and souls being killed every day,” Obeid said. “Every time we displace, we say this is the last time. But it seems displacement is our eternal fate."
