Police have confirmed no injuries occurred during the three separate incidents in north London
A Ukrainian national has been charged with multiple counts of arson following a series of fires, including one at a property owned by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed.
In a statement issued on Thursday, police said Roman Lavrynovych, 21, of Sydenham in south London, faces three counts of arson with intent to endanger life. The charges relate to a string of incidents between May 8 and May 12, including a vehicle fire, a blaze at the entrance of a property, and a third fire at a residential address.
The first fire took place on May 8, when a Toyota Rav4 was set alight in Kentish Town. The car had previously belonged to Starmer but had been sold to a neighbor, according to the Telegraph newspaper.
On May 11, another fire broke out at the entrance of a flat in Islington that Starmer reportedly owned in the 1990s. In the early hours of May 12, a third fire was reported at the Prime Minister’s current family home in Tufnell Park, which is now rented out to his sister-in-law, according to the media.
While the entrance and front door were damaged, no injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
The Metropolitan Police said its Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation “due to the property having previous connections with a high-profile public figure.” Continue…
Ukraine admits to losing third F-16

The Ukrainian military has confirmed the loss of another US-designed F-16 fighter jet as it was repelling a Russian strike. This marks the third such incident since Kiev started receiving the advanced warplanes from the West.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, all communication with the jet was lost at approximately 3:30am on Friday while it was carrying out a defensive combat mission. No data was provided regarding the location of the crash.
Officials said that the unnamed pilot had “destroyed three aerial targets and was engaging a fourth using the aircraft’s cannon when an onboard emergency occurred.” The pilot steered the jet away from populated areas and ejected; he was later picked up by a rescue team in satisfactory condition.

The Telegraph caused a stir in the UK after it reported on Friday that hostile governments, such as China, could remotely inflict blackouts and cause irreparable damage to entire power grids increasingly reliant on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

The proposed acquisition, valued at approximately $6 billion, would unite two of the country’s largest heavy oil producers into what would become Canada’s fifth-largest oil company by output. The offer comes after MEG rebuffed a friendly merger proposal from Strathcona in April.
Strathcona, controlled by prominent Calgary financier Adam Waterous, announced Thursday it intends to formally table a cash-and-stock bid of $23.27 per MEG share, representing a 9.3% premium over MEG’s May 15 closing price.

Designed to give Alberta’s landlocked oil sands access to tidewater, the pipeline was widely expected to bolster exports to US West Coast refiners. Instead, it has opened the door to Asia, especially China.

Consortium of Quebec Investors to Purchase Lion Electric

A group of Quebec investors has reached a deal to acquire and relaunch struggling vehicle-maker Lion Electric.
The consortium of investors is led by Pierre Wilkie, a director of the electric-vehicle manufacturer, and Vincent Chiara, president of Montreal real estate developer Groupe MACH.
Lion Electric, which sought protection from its creditors in December, announced the sale Thursday evening and will present the agreement to a Quebec Superior Court judge Friday morning.
The deal comes after the Quebec government refused last month to inject any more public funds into the company, which had been a condition of a previous offer by the group of investors. The court-appointed monitor for the company suggested at the time that Lion Electric, which manufactured electric school buses and trucks, would likely face liquidation after that deal fell through.
But last week, the investors made a new offer after receiving confirmation that Quebec would renew a subsidy program for electric school buses, which had expired in March. Continue…

A judicial recount in the southern Ontario riding of Milton East—Halton Hills South confirmed Friday that Liberal Kristina Tesser Derksen won the seat.
Tesser Derksen posted on social media shortly after midnight that the official recount had confirmed her victory.
“It is a profound honour to be elected as your MP,” she wrote on X.
Elections Canada ordered the recount last week after the vote validation process showed Tesser Derksen won the riding over Conservative Parm Gill by a slim margin.
The recount narried the margin from 29 votes to 21.
A judicial recount is ordered automatically when the top two candidates are separated by less than 0.1 per cent of the valid votes cast.
Gill was declared the victor on election night but the riding flipped to Liberals after the results were validated by Elections Canada. The validation process requires the returning officer in every riding to check the cumulative addition of votes from all the polls, and happens in the days after the initial count takes place on election night. It does not recount the ballots.
A judicial recount does count the ballots again, including reviewing rejected ballots, and takes place in the presence of a judge from a Superior Court in the relevant province or territory. Continue…

Electric vehicle sales have dropped 44 percent since last year, even as the overall new vehicle market grows, according to Statistics Canada’s latest vehicle sales update.
In March 2024, 22,390 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were sold in Canada, including battery electric and plug-in hybrid models. This year, however, the sales for March dropped to 12,347 ZEVs, StatCan determined through its monthly new motor vehicle sales survey.
Overall, the total number of all types of new vehicles purchased in March was 189,259, reflecting a 9.4 percent increase from sales of March last year. The federal agency says the increase is largely due to a boost in sales of new light trucks, which gained 13.5 percent from last year.
Sales of new passenger cars declined 10.9 percent from the previous year. The largest decrease in new automobile sales was for electric vehicles (EVs), which made up 6.5 percent of the total vehicles sold in March this year.
StatCan’s survey did not mention what led to the decline of EV sales. Data from the federal agency, however, indicated that sales have been plummeting since the federal government in January this year paused its incentive program, which lowered the price on an EV by thousands of dollars. Continue…

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is highly focused on Mexican cartels in its latest national threat assessment, but it also raises concerns about Canada, citing the presence of large-scale, sophisticated fentanyl laboratories in the country.
The DEA released on May 13 its National Drug Threat Assessment for the year 2025, which identifies the key Mexican cartels and their operations, and provides an overview of the trends involving the different types of narcotics found in the United States.
In the section on fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid responsible for a large number of overdose deaths in the United States and Canada, the DEA says Mexican transnational criminal organizations have “cemented” their role in supplying the drug.
The agency says cartels are capitalizing on the ease of production of synthetic drugs, with precursors coming mostly from China and India, and rely on a “complex and robust” network to smuggle all types of narcotics into the United States.
The DEA mentions Canada as a source of fentanyl production, and as a destination point for shipments of precursor chemicals. The assessment also cited the agency’s “growing concern” over large-scale “super laboratories” operating in Canada.
“In addition to the synthetic drug threat from Mexico, elevated synthetic drug production in Canada—particularly from sophisticated fentanyl ’super laboratories” such as the type seized by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in October 2024—presents a growing concern for the United States,” says the report. A woman whose partner died by euthanasia after developing a bedsore during a stay at a Quebec hospital says medical staff did not respond to her requests to improve his conditions, which she says might have prevented the wound.
Sylvie Brosseau made the comments at the Montreal Courthouse, where a public inquiry is being held into the death of her partner, Normand Meunier, who requested medical assistance in dying (MAID) after developing a serious bedsore while being treated for a respiratory virus at St-Jérôme Hospital, where he was left on a stretcher for four days.
Bedsores, also called pressure ulcers, are injuries caused by localized, prolonged pressure over an area of the body. Meunier, a 66-year-old quadriplegic, requested MAID two months after developing the injury on his buttocks and died on March 29, 2024.
Quebec’s chief coroner, Reno Bernier, ordered a public inquiry into the case on June 25, 2024, following a request from Public Security Minister François Bonnardel. A B.C. regional district board has voted to refuse ostrich carcasses from an Edgewood, B.C., farm to be disposed of at local landfills unless the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) does further testing on the birds before it culls them.
The CFIA made the decision to cull 400 birds at the Universal Ostrich Farm, citing public safety issues, after two tested positive for H5N1, or avian flu. A court upheld the CFIA’s order after the owners of the farm challenged the decision, arguing that the birds have developed herd immunity and could be used for research. The CFIA says the birds need to be culled to prevent spreading of the disease.
The court said CFIA’s decision was “reasonable” and made in a “procedurally fair manner.”
CFIA said that it would be moving forward with the cull but would not be publicly releasing the dates when it would take place.
The Regional District of Central Kootenay board passed a motion on May 15 saying it will not accept the birds’ carcasses at local landfills until the CFIA conducted more testing on the birds.
A spokesperson told The Epoch Times in an email that the board motion says it would direct staff to “withhold acceptance” of ostriches from the farm that were exposed to “Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza” (HPAI). The board said it first wanted “the number of birds confirmed infected with HPAI and the number classified as exposed,” and further, that the CFIA provide this information directly to the public “in a timely and transparent manner.” Continue…

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra told business leaders from G7 countries there should be no question about whether his country is open for business.
Hoesktra made the comments during his first official address since arriving to his diplomatic post in Ottawa, during the Business 7 (B7) Summit on May 16 in the Canadian capital.
“Someone said, ‘Is America open for business?’ And it’s like, excuse me, have you not been watching?” Hoekstra said. “America is open for business, and as the B7, a group that leads the world, we anticipate and hope that you are all open for business as well.”
The B7 is an engagement group of the G7 comprising leaders from the business communities of the respective countries. It will issue economic recommendations to the G7 at the end of its summit, one month before the G7 leaders meeting in Kananaskis, Alberta.
Hoekstra’s comments came as the Trump administration has upended international trade with the imposition of various levels of tariffs on its commercial partners, including Canada. Canadian leaders at the federal and provincial levels have called to find other markets so as not to be dependent on the United States.

British Columbia Forests Minister Ravi Parmar says the province is sending almost 100 wildland firefighters to Ontario, where fires have been threatening several communities near the Manitoba border.
Parmar says the deployment comes after B.C. sent 42 firefighters to Manitoba, where a blaze in the Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet this week destroyed 28 homes and cottages and left two people dead.
He says the deployments are part of an inter-agency agreement that allows provinces to ask each other for wildfire support.
Cool temperatures and rain have kept B.C.’s own fire situation manageable, Parmar says, allowing the inter-provincial deployments.
He says it’s up to Ontario to decide where the B.C. firefighters will be sent.
Parmar says typical deployments to other jurisdictions last two weeks, but government is assessing the situation on a daily basis.
