While Weiner was ranting like a loon, DVS 7.0 brought up Weiner’s sexting scandal.

France Running Out Of Money? Auditors Warn State Has "Lost Control" Of Welfare Spending, IMF Demands Cuts

France’s state audit office, the Court of Auditors, has issued a stark warning regarding the country’s welfare spending, projecting an impending “liquidity crisis.”

The auditors’ report reviewed by Politico indicates that welfare expenditures are “out of control” and could leave France running out of money as early as 2027.

“We need to take back control. Over the past years, especially in 2023 and 2024, we have lost control of our public finances,” the court’s president, Pierre Moscovici, said in an interview with RTL.

The government forecasts a social budget deficit of €15.3 billion for 2024, expected to escalate to €22.1 billion in 2025. However, the Court of Auditors deems even this substantial projection overly optimistic, citing the government’s overestimation of economic growth and the impact of tax cuts.

Pierre Moscovici, president of the Court of Auditors, emphasized the urgency of the situation in an interview with RTL on Monday. “We need to take back control. In recent years, especially in 2023 and 2024, we have lost control of our public finances,” he stated.

However, what Politico and the court both do not mention is that tens of billions of this spending is going to France’s exploding immigrant population.

As France has noted, academics have put the costs of migrants in France at approximately €25 billion a year, with some having even higher estimates. However, many of those with a migration background have French citizenship, and these are not counted in such statistics.

France’s budget deficit has significantly expanded as of late, reaching 5.8 percent of GDP last year, far exceeding the European Union’s 3 percent ceiling.

Despite the French government’s deficit reduction pledges, the situation is not expected to improve substantially in the near term. The deficit is projected to decrease to only 5.4 percent by 2025, with the 3 percent target not anticipated until 2029.

Both the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have expressed concern over France’s escalating spending. Last week, the IMF advised France to curtail welfare spending and proceed with pension reform.

Conference Secretary-General Li Junhua told reporters on Tuesday he hopes it will not be another routine meeting but “the pivotal opportunity” to accelerate action and mobilize people in all sectors and across the world, AP reports.

The conference, co-sponsored by France and Costa Rica, takes place in Nice on the French Riviera from June 7 to June 13 with golden beaches and luxury hotels providing the back drop.

It is expected to bring together more than 60 world leaders, dozens of ministers, about 4,000 government officials and 6,000 members of civil society, Li told The Associated Press.

The meeting program includes 10 plenary meetings, 10 thematic roundtables, a blue zone reserved for official delegations, and a series of parallel forums during five days of negotiations.

The decision follows pressure from advocacy organizations, as well as a report from the Ontario Ministry of Education. The review—led by Assistant Deputy Minister Patrick Case—examined a September 2024 student field trip to the Grassy Narrows River Run. While the trip was framed as an Indigenous solidarity event, it also seemingly doubled as a pro-Palestinian protest.

Backlash followed after the school took students on a field trip to an anti-Israel, pro-Gaza protest. Media attention amplified that backlash. The review from the Assistant Deputy Minister then determined that the backlash against the protest-oriented field trip was actually racism in action.

A year ago in these pages, I criticized land acknowledgements for implying that non-Indigenous Canadians are “uninvited guests” in their own country. Now, the B.C. government has embraced these labels.

To the applause of her colleagues, NDP MLA Rohini Arora stood in the legislature earlier this month, encouraging non-Indigenous British Columbians to describe themselves as a “settler,” “colonizer” and “uninvited guest” living on “Indigenous land.”

This divisive mindset is increasingly being put into action, with a number of parks in B.C. being temporarily closed to non-Indigenous visitors.

The most contentious of these is the repeat closure of Joffre Lakes Provincial Park during peak season, with access first denied by the Lílwat Nation and the N’Quatqua First Nation in 2023 for 39 days. In 2024, access was restricted for 60 days. Last week, it was announced that the 2025 closures will last more than 100 days.

The B.C. government also recently announced a short-term restriction on non-Indigenous visitors to the iconic Botanical Beach park on Vancouver Island. If Joffre Lakes is any guide, we can expect longer closures in the future.

The government’s endorsement of these closures sets a troubling precedent for other parks and public lands. As B.C.’s former deputy minister of energy and Aboriginal law expert Robin Junger pointed out, the Joffre Lakes closures were initiated on the basis of the park being within Lílwat and N’Quatqua traditional territory, where Aboriginal title has been asserted but not proven. “Public Order Units have cleared demonstrators from the roadway after the Police Liaison Team made numerous attempts to have the protestors cooperate,” the OPS said on social media. Police added that no injuries were reported and that the roadway remained closed for the ongoing operation.

Protesters had gathered in the south of Ottawa near EY Centre, which is hosting the CANSEC military show for defence industry representatives. Defence Minister David McGuinty delivered a keynote address at the start of the conference on May 28.

Anti-war advocacy group World Beyond War Canada said on the morning of May 28 that hundreds of protesters had “shut down” CANSEC.

Hamas’s chief in Gaza, Mohammed Sinwar, has been killed, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on May 28.

Speaking before the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, Netanyahu said that the Jewish state has “eliminated Ismail Haniyeh and Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar, and Mohammed Sinwar.”

Haniyeh was Hamas’s political leader when he was taken out by Israel in Tehran in July 2024. Deif was the head of Hamas’s military wing when he was killed by Israel in Gaza that same month. Yahya Sinwar, who was the leader of Hamas, was the mastermind behind Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel. He was killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza in October 2024. He was succeeded by his brother, Mohammed.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is hopeful Canada will join the European Union’s defence rearmament plan by July 1 in a bid to decrease its reliance on the United States for arms and ammunition.

The government’s throne speech on May 27 committed the country to joining ReArm Europe and Carney told CBC in an interview the same day he wants to move quickly on joining the initiative.

“Seventy-five cents of every dollar of capital spending for defence goes to the United States. That’s not smart,” Carney told CBC’s “Power & Politics.”

Canada has been involved in discussions with the European Union about participating in the project since Carney was sworn-in this spring. The plan could see members investing $1.25 trillion in defence over the next five years.

“We’re making great progress on that, and by Canada today, we'd like to see something concrete,” Carney said, adding that becoming part of the “build out” of the EU’s defence industrial base will bring jobs to Canada.

The United States could soon adopt a tax bill that could have major implications for Canada, potentially raising tax rates for Canadian corporations operating in the United States and removing statutory tax exemptions as punishment for Ottawa’s controversial Digital Services Tax.

On May 22, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed U.S. President Donald Trump’s budget legislation, which has been dubbed the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill,” in a 215–214 vote. It includes a section on “remedies against unfair foreign taxes,” a proposal under which Canadian companies and individuals earning income from U.S. securities could see significant increases in their U.S. withholding tax rates, up to as high as 50 percent.

The bill is now before the Senate, but opposition from Democratic senators and some Republican ones could potentially hold up its passage.

The legislation sets aside over US$200 billion for defence and border security, cuts back on health care and food programs, and reduces federal spending by $1.5 trillion. But the bill also has implications for Canadians.

Ottawa’s Digital Services Tax (DST) could be one of the taxes considered unfair under the proposed U.S. legislation. Canada’s DST is aimed at large foreign technology companies that receive revenue from Canadian subscribers and contributors, such as Amazon, Google, and Netflix. Washington has cited its opposition to the DST for several years, with then-U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Cohen warning in 2023 that there would be “contention” unless the dispute is resolved. The Royal Canadian Legion's national office cancelled eight town hall venues intended to engage Saskatchewan residents on Western independence, disrupting the meetings.

Unified Grassroots, the organizers of the events, stated that Legion branches province-wide were instructed on Monday to cancel their bookings, as first reported by the Western Standard.

Nadine Ness, president of the group, described the forums as non-partisan discussions on Saskatchewan history, constitutional rights, and Western alienation within Confederation.
