Trump made the announcement during a rally at U.S. Steel’s Irvin Works plant in celebration of a new deal entered into between the American steel manufacturer and Japan’s Nippon Steel.

“We are going to be imposing a 25% increase. We’re going to bring it from 25% to 50% — the tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States. Nobody’s going to get around that,” Trump said.

“At 25% they can sorta get over that fence,” Trump said. “At 50% nobody’s getting over that fence,” Trump said.

President Trump also announced a $5,000 bonus for every steelworker.

The steelworkers erupted in applause.

“It is my great honor to raise the Tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%, effective Wednesday, June 4th. Our steel and aluminum industries are coming back like never before. President of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, Mahdi al-Mashat, has warned Israel of a "hot summer" ahead, as the militant group allied to Iran has refused to halt its missile fire on Israel in relation to the ongoing Gaza war.

Israeli airstrikes earlier this week took out the last remaining planes operated by national carrier Yemenia Airways at Sanaa international airport. The airport is completely demolished after multiple rounds of Israeli attacks, and with runways blown to pieces.

The new statement warned that this "will include Israeli civilian aircraft on the target list" - meaning that main national carrier El Al Israel Airlines will be targeted, per Lebanon's Al-Akhbar.

Canada has welcomed more than 800,000 new immigrants to the country through the first four months of 2025, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.

Between January and April, “132,100 people were granted permanent residency, while 194,000 study permits and 491,400 work permits (including extensions) were finalized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada,” reports Juno News.

Despite outlining a goal to return to “sustainable levels” of immigration in a mandate letter, Prime Minister Mark Carney's government has so far continued to welcome newcomers at a high pace.

The Liberal campaign promised to restrict the number of temporary workers and international students to 5% of the population while reducing annual permanent resident admissions to 1% of the population by 2027.

Based on Canada's current population of 40 million, that number would equate to 2,000,000 temporary workers and international students along with 400,000 permanent residents.

“Fraud, abuse, and massive backlogs now plague every immigration stream, with the unifying problem being unchecked inflow coupled with countless people living in the country without legal status,” Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel Garner wrote in a post on social media.

Current immigration levels “must be massively and immediately curtailed,” she added.

Lawyers representing the Christian Heritage Party of Canada (CHP) say an Ontario court permitted them to proceed with an appeal in a case involving the City of Hamilton’s refusal to allow the CHP to advertise on a city bus an affirmation of the biological reality that there are only men and women.

The Acacia Group, the Ottawa-based legal group representing the CHP, noted in a press release that the CHP in 2023 was not allowed by Hamilton city officials to place a bus advertisement with the words “Woman: An Adult Female.”

The city’s rejection letter, dated July 2023, acknowledged that the CHP did have Charter rights to free speech. However, as noted by the Acacia Group, the city claimed that the advertisement’s message supporting “a traditional and biologically determined definition of gender in line with conservative values” was enough grounds to ban the ad.

The city’s rejection letter also mentioned it had consulted with local LGBT groups as well as an LGBT-sponsored health publication about whether the ad would have a negative effect on transgendered people. The Cardinal Archbishop of Toronto is calling on Catholics to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus instead of Pride Month this June.

In a statement issued Friday, Cardinal Frank Leo urged Catholics to look to the Sacred Heart instead of “ideological” symbols that distort the Church’s moral and doctrinal teachings.

The statement, posted on the Archdiocese’s website on Friday, May 29 but dated June 1, states, “we do good to use our own symbols to tell our own story without resorting to trendy, misguided and inadequate symbols that do not represent us as Catholics but rather contribute to confusion, distortions and ambiguities about what the Catholic faith truly teaches regarding the human person, human nature, and natural moral law.”

His Eminence further urged Catholics to “make sure that the symbols we use are consistent with our Catholic faith and not borrowed from ideological fora, promoted by lobby groups and endorsed by political movements. We ought to honor and respect our traditions and not compromise the integrity of the faith by using symbols that are contrary to God’s divine revelation.”

The Canadian province of Manitoba on Wednesday declared a state of emergency over fast-growing wildfires. Saskatchewan followed suit on Thursday, and Alberta is shutting down some of its oil production facilities.

Emergency officials urged thousands of local residents to evacuate as the fires spread through central and west Canada.

“This is the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people’s living memory,” said Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew on Wednesday.

At least 17,000 evacuation notices have been issued, rivaling the 25,000 evacuations during the massive Red River Valley flood of 1997. The communities of Flin Flon and Cross Lake were told to evacuate, along with the Cree Nation communities of Pimicikamak and Pukatawagan. The evacuees will be sheltered at community centers and arenas in Winnipeg.

Kinew said he requested, and received, assistance from the Canadian Armed Forces, which is contributing aircraft to the evacuation effort.

“The premier and I are in close contact, and the federal government stands ready to assist Manibota’s provincial wildfire teams,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said.

Flin Flon Mayor George Fontaine said on Friday the situation in his town was desperate, as himself and the last few remaining evacuation holdouts were told to flee before the wind turned against them.

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Friday, urged China to prevent its ally, North Korea, from deploying troops on “European soil” if it hopes to prevent an expanded NATO presence in Asia.

In April, Pyongyang admitted that its troops were assisting Moscow in liberating Kursk Region, which was invaded by Ukrainian forces last August but has since been reclaimed by Russia.

That month, Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov told President Vladimir Putin that North Korean troops had demonstrated “high professionalism, courage, and heroism” in the operation. During Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations, Putin publicly thanked them for their defense of Kursk Region.
