HFDG

8647

?

This document provides a summary of the Human Factors Design Guide (HFDG) published by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in January 1996. The HFDG was developed to help FAA and contractors apply human factors best practices when acquiring new systems and equipment. It consolidates guidelines from multiple sources into a single reference guide. The document also notes that applying the HFDG requires expert judgment and does not replace in-depth human factors work. Overall, the HFDG aims to help ensure systems meet usability, safety and productivity needs.

Chapter 8 of the HFDG, Human-Computer Interface, is one of the most requested bodies of

information and also one that has experienced many new developments in recent years.

Researchers at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) William J. Hughes Technical Center

have provided an updated and expanded set of user-interface guidelines that can meet the needs

of FAA missions and systems. Although the original HFDG was primarily focused on FAA

ground systems and equipment such as those managed and maintained by Airway Facilities, the

researchers expanded the coverage beyond maintenance issues
