From a time before the printing press (1440), here is a hand drawn image of an enlarged Q to begin a chapter (called an Inititium). Full of medieval symbology, it depicts the biblical Job awakening from sleep to fight off devils. Note the canine eating a snake, it's tail providing the slash through the circle, and the cowering devil beneath the bed. I'm sure there is more meaning to each detail, but the description in the book where I got this offered scant details. Make up your own, I guess!
