Iran’s Khamenei Brands Trump a Liar in Escalation of Rhetoric

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused US President Donald Trump of dishonesty and power abuse, marking the latest rhetorical flare-up between Tehran and the US.
“Trump said he wants to use power for peace; he lied,” Khamenei said in remarks aired Saturday on Iranian state television. “When have they ever used power to create peace?”
Khamenei’s remarks followed Trump’s tour this week of the Middle East, which included stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Speaking at an investment forum in Riyadh on Tuesday,Trump accused the Islamic Republic’s leadership of corruption and “stealing their people’s wealth” to fund terrorism.
“Some of the remarks made during the US president’s trip to the region aren’t even worth responding to,” Khamenei said.
“The level of the statements is so low that they are a source of shame for the speaker and a source of shame for the American people.”
The intensifying discourse comes as Washington and Tehran are holding ongoing talks about Iran’s nuclear activities. During his Middle East trip, Trump said he had extended an “olive branch” to Tehran, while reiterating that he would never allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons.
While both sides have pointed to progress in talks,Iranian officials have accused the US of adopting mixed positions behind closed doors and with the media, a strategy they say could undermine the process.
Trump said Friday that Iran will face “something bad” if it doesn’t quickly accept a US proposal over its nuclear program, while officials in Tehran called the messaging “confusing and contradictory.”
On Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian saidthe country didn’t want to escalate tensions with the US. “We believe in negotiation and engage in dialog, but we’re not afraid of threats, and under no circumstances will we retreat from our legal rights,” Pezeshkian said.
Washington and Tehran concluded their fourth round of Oman-mediated talks in Muscat earlier this month,with both sides agreeing to continue, though no date has been scheduled for future discussions.

Making the announcement via his Truth Social account, President Trump notes he will be speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday and then conducting further discussions with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his NATO allies thereafter.
The principals phone call follows on the heels of Secretary of State Marco Rubio having a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
WASHINGTON DC – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.During the call, Rubio delivered a message from US President Donald Trump.
During the conversation with Lavrov, the US Secretary of State welcomed the prisoner exchange agreement reached in talks between Ukraine and Russia on May 16 in Istanbul.
Rubio also conveyed a clear message from President Trump.
“The United States is committed to achieving a lasting end to the Russia-Ukraine war. The comprehensive peace plan proposed by the United States outlines the best way forward,” Rubio emphasized.

Former CIA Director John Brennan said Friday on MSNBC’s “Deadline” that former FBI Director James Comey was not advocating violence with his social media post about President Donald Trump that featured a photo of seashells arranged to read, “86 47.”
Brennan said, “It’s unsurprising that someone like Tulsi Gabbard would say something like that, but there’s absolutely no basis or reason for a director of National Intelligence to comment at all on this matter, much less say that a former director of the FBI should be in prison. I know Jim Comey worked very closely with him, didn’t always agree with some of the decisions he made, but I think he has unimpeachable integrity from the standpoint of his commitment to the rule of law.”
He added, “There’s absolutely no way that Jim Comey would have been advocating any type of violence against the President of the United States, much less anyone. And it’s very unfortunate that we are in an era right now where individuals seize upon something like this and just fuel the fires.”
Brennan added, “As you pointed out, the term 86, you know, is used in the restaurant contextand has been put on, you know, T-shirts for and against previous presidents. And throughout my career,I’ve never heard 86 be used for any type of intent to kill or assassinate someone. 86 is, you know, you discard something, you just ignore it. It’s not something that Jim Comey would have been advocating in terms of any type of violence. And again, you know, he took down the post. I think it was the right thing.”
