"The first performance of the full song took place on the morning of Wednesday, December 30, 1970, after Danoff, Nivert, and Denver stayed up until 6 a.m. finishing the verses, chorus, and bridge. The next day, December 31, 1970, was Denver's 28th birthday. During Denver's first set at The Cellar Door, the trio performed the song together for the first time in front of an audience, and it resulted in a five-minute standing ovation."
