How the Aurora Generator Test Worked

Method: Researchers used a computer program to rapidly open and close the circuit breakers of a 2.25 MW diesel generator while it was connected to a simulated power grid. This was done deliberately out of phase with the grid's normal operation.

Effect: Each time the breakers were closed out of synchrony, the generator experienced severe mechanical stress-abnormal torques that caused the generator to violently shake, overheat, and ultimately explode.

Result: The test conclusively showed that a cyberattack could cause catastrophic, irreversible mechanical damage to large electrical equipment in just minutes, with parts of the generator being thrown up to 80 feet away.
