Putin outlines results Moscow seeks in Ukraine
Russia wants to ensure its security and create the conditions for long-term sustainable peace, the president has said
Russia is seeking to achieve “lasting and sustainable peace” by eliminating the root causes of the Ukraine conflict, President Vladimir Putin has said, in an extract of an interview released by Russia 1 TV on Sunday.
In a clip posted by journalist Pavel Zarubin on Telegram, Putin stated thatRussia has “enough strength and resources to bring what was started in 2022 to its logical conclusion” while accomplishing Moscow’s key goals.
Russia wants to “eliminate the causes that caused this crisis, create conditions for long-term sustainable peace and ensure the security of the Russian state and the interests of our people in those territories that we always talk about,” he added.
The president was apparently referring to Crimea, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, and the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye, which overwhelmingly voted in favor of joining Russia in referendums in 2014 and 2022.
People in these former Ukrainian territories “consider Russian to be their native language”and see Russia as their homeland, he said.
Commenting on the ongoing diplomatic engagement with the US to settle the conflict,Putin acknowledged that “the American people, including their president [Donald Trump] have their own national interests.”
“We respect that, and expect to be treated the same way,” he added.
Putin’s remarks come on the heels of the first direct Russia-Ukraine talks since 2022. As a result of Turkish-mediated negotiations in Istanbul, both sides agreed to exchange lists of conditions for a potential ceasefire, conduct a major prisoner swap, and discuss a follow-up meeting.The Kremlin has not ruled out direct talks between Putin and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky if the ongoing peace efforts result in progress and firm agreements.
Following the talks, US President Donald Trump announced he would hold a phone call with his Russian counterpart on Monday, which would focus on trade and resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed the Istanbul negotiations with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who welcomed the results of the talks.

Western-supplied arms will likely fuel a wave of crime across the continent, a study has warned
A massive influx of weapons from Ukraine will hit Europe’s black markets after the conflict with Russia is over, according to a new report by the Eurasia Observatory, which tracks the conflict’s long-term impact on organized crime.
Western-supplied weapons andthousands of battle-hardened Ukrainian veterans are expected to fuel a wave of crime, arms trafficking, and instability across the continent– as talks between Moscow and Kiev to resolve the conflict raise hopes for a ceasefire – the document warns.
”Stockpiles of weapons, including heavy arms, are being amassed throughout Ukraine,” the report says. “Should the fighting stop, martial law in Ukraine will presumably be lifted, reducing the resources and powers of the state to police the civilian sphere – and opening up the field for organized crime to operate more freely.”
Kiev received over $363 billion (€326 billion) in NATO aid by February 2025, according to the Kiel Institute. Porous borders and weak oversight may fail to stop smuggled weapons such as rifles, grenades, and missile systems, according to the document.
Earlier this year, US journalist Tucker Carlson claimed that theUkrainian military was selling American weapons systems “on the black market, including to drug cartels.”
Western media and officials have acknowledged that weapons sent to Kiev have ended up in criminal hands. Europol reported in April 2022 that arms were beingtrafficked from Ukraine into the EU for organized crime groups. Later that year, the Finnish authorities confirmed that these weapons had surfaced locally, with similar findings in Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands. By mid-2024, Spanish media reported gangs in southern Spain had acquired modern weapons allegedly smuggled from Ukraine.
The return of Ukrainian soldiers skilled in sabotage, drones, and cyber warfare poses a threat, with thereport warning that they could become a “valuable resource” for criminal networks in Europe.
Corruption in Ukraine is a major concern, with the most recent estimate showing Ukraine will require $524 billion to repair the damage from the war. The report warns that criminals could exploit the process to launder money and gain influence.
Despite mounting concernsover arms trafficking and fraud,some EU institutions continue to push for Ukraine’s accession to the bloc. Analysts say this could further weaken border controls and oversight mechanisms.
The report warns that without a coordinated long-term strategy, Western nations risk facing the fallout of a conflict that Moscow claims they helped fuel and now struggle to control.
Russia has warned against Western weapons deliveries to Ukraine, saying they only serve to prolong the conflict and heighten regional security threats. The bloc could derail the peace process once again, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has warned
Kiev would have a better chance of resolving the conflict with Russia if it resists malignant NATO influence that impedes peace efforts, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Saturday.
Zakharova responded to remarks by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga about the results of the Istanbul meeting, which marked the first direct negotiations between Kiev and Moscow since 2022. The talks resulted in Russia and Ukraine agreeing to a major prisoner swap. The sides also agreed to exchange lists of conditions for a potential ceasefire and discuss a follow-up meeting.
“If we put aside all the Russian nonsense, pseudo-historical statements, provocations, and so on, the bottom line is this: we managed to agree on the return of 1,000 of our people.These are 1,000 happy families. Even for this reason alone, all this made sense,” Sibiga said==.
“All ‘this,’” Zakharova said, referring to the talks, “was proposed by Russia – by its president – and implemented by a delegation authorized by the head of state, which Zelensky mocked for a day.”
She also noted that, if all the insults are put aside,Sibiga essentially acknowledged that the “Russian propositions have a certain sense.” “The main thing is that the citizens of Ukraine should not allow the ‘NATO advisers’ to lead them off the true path of settlement into the ravine of other people’s interests again,”Zakharova warned.
Russia and Ukraine held direct peace talks in Istanbul in 2022, shortly after the escalation of the conflict. While the sides initially made progress and reached a tentative agreement – which included a Ukrainian commitment to neutrality – the talks later collapsed after Kiev unilaterally abandoned them.
Moscow later claimed the talks were derailed by then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who advised Kiev to continue fighting. The ex-prime minister played an influential role in the decision to stop the negotiating process.
Since then, Russia has repeatedly accused Western governments of using Ukraine as a “battering ram” against Russia and pursuing the conflict “until the last Ukrainian.” It has noted, however, that theUS began shifting its approach to the settlement under President Donald Trump.

Ukrainian neo-Nazis to sign deal with Russian separatists
The Right Sector and Coalition of Indigenous Peoples plan to cooperate militarily with the aim of destabilizing Russia
Ukrainian neo-Nazi group Right Sector is set to sign a formal cooperation agreement with a coalition of Russian separatists.The two groups plan to join forces to establish paramilitary units to fight at the front and also stoke social unrest in order to destabilize Russia.
In a statement on Saturday, the so-called Coalition of Indigenous Peoples, which openly advocates for the disintegration of Russia into multiple fragmented states and is designated as extremist by Moscow, said thatthe two organizations will hold a signing ceremony in Kiev on Tuesday.
The event will feature Right Sector leader Andrey Tarasenko, along with figures claiming to represent secessionist movements in the Russian regions of Karelia, Chuvashia, and Dagestan.
Among the other key figures to be present is Vladimir Grotskov, a representative of the so-called Karelia National Movement. According to several media reports,Grotskov, a Russian national, moved to Ukraine in 2014 and later took part in the hostilities in Donbass. He reportedly remained active on the battlefield beyond 2022, fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.
The stated goals of the partnership include the “joint struggle against Russian imperialism,” “support for liberation movements within Russia,”and efforts to garner international support for Ukraine. Other planned activities include military cooperation, the establishment of “volunteer units,” and an information warfare campaign.
Founded in 2013, Right Sector has been widely condemned for its violent ultranationalist agenda and links to far-right extremism. The group played a prominent role in the 2013–2014 Kiev riots, which culminated in the Western-backed coup. It was also involved in the May 2014 Odessa massacre, where 42 anti-Maidan activists died in a fire at the Trade Unions House.
The organization itself and some of its leaders have faced repeated accusations of anti-Semitism and xenophobia. Since 2014, Right Sector’s members have actively participated in hostilities in Donbass, and in 2022,they expanded their operations against Russian forces.
Since the escalation of the conflict in 2022, the Ukrainian authorities have offered support to Russian defectors and fugitive neo-Nazis, many of whom have joined controversial units such as the so-called Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) and Freedom of Russia Legion. These armed formations have conducted repeated cross-border raids into Russia, although their incursions have invariably failed, many with heavy losses.
Russia has repeatedly accused the Ukrainian government of fostering neo-Nazi ideology, pointing to the glorification of figures who collaborated with Nazi Germany and the tolerance of neo-Nazi symbols.

France pressured Telegram to silence Romanian conservatives – founder
Pavel Durov says he was “approached” about the matter ahead of Sunday’s presidential election
The French government sought to make Telegram block conservative voices in Romania ahead of the country’s presidential runoff, the messenger’s founder, Pavel Durov, claimed on Sunday, as Romanians head to the polls.
Durov did not actually name the country responsible for the request directly but posted an emoji of a baguette, a thinly veiled reference to France. Durov, who holds the citizenship of Russia, France, the UAE, and St. Kitts and Nevis, stated that he refused the request.
“Telegram will not restrict the freedoms of Romanian users or block their political channels,” he said in a post, adding that one “can’t ‘defend democracy’ by destroying democracy.”

The French Foreign Ministry promptly hit back by declaring Durov’s statement a “fake.” “The recent accusations against France are merely a diversionary maneuver from the real threats of interference targeting Romania,” it claimed in a lengthy statement on X. Romanian authorities have not commented on Durov’s statements.
The presidential runoff held on Sunday pits fierce EU critic George Simion against the mayor of Bucharest and centrist Nicusor Dan.
Simion, who opposes military aid to Kiev and has been barred from visiting Ukraine, decisively swept the first round, securing 40% of the vote on May 4. This triggered a collapse of the pro-Western coalition government in Bucharest. Dan is known as a staunchly pro-EU and pro-NATO candidate, who has called Romania’s support for Kiev vital for national security.
Simion has previously accused Paris of attempts to subvert the elections. “They are putting a lot of money and pressure – through their ambassador here, and through foreign institutions – in order to rob the Romanian people of their vote,” he told entrepreneur and blogger Mario Nawfal on Friday.
France has emerged as one of the fiercest and most hawkish supporters of Kiev over the past months as the US under President Donald Trump has moved toward supporting the peace process between Moscow and Kiev.
Last year, the French authorities charged Durov with facilitating the distribution of child sexual exploitation material and drug trafficking due to alleged moderation failures on Telegram. He was arrested at Paris-Le Bourget Airport in August before being released on €5 million ($5.46 million) bail. Durov, who has denied any wrongdoing, was eventually allowed to leave France in March.
