Michael Knowles: On the betrayal of trust by institutions
"I’m not an anti-vaxxer. I’ve never been anti-institution or reflexively against expertise," says Michael Knowles. "But I’m deeply skeptical of the powerful institutions and so-called experts today—not because I want to be, but because they’ve forced me to be. They’ve squandered their credibility, and it’s maddening.
"I wish I could trust public health officials, politicians, and major institutions. But when you look at COVID, the evidence is undeniable: they lied. They said one thing privately, another to the public, then contradicted themselves again months later. They beclowned themselves with deception and inconsistency. How can any reasonable person ignore that?
"I’m not the problem here. I didn’t choose to distrust them—they burned their own credibility. When you prove with certainty that you’ve been misled, what are you supposed to do? Blind faith isn’t an option. As a rational person, I have to respond to their bad behavior with clear-eyed skepticism.
