VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) — In one of the first major appointments of his pontificate, Pope Leo XIV has replaced the controversial president of the John Paul II Institute, which was itself gutted by Pope Francis in 2019.
As announced by the Holy See Press Office today, Leo XIV has named Cardinal Baldassare Reina as the Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Theological Institute “John Paul II” for the Sciences of Marriage and the Family.
As of October last year, Reina – created cardinal in December 2024 – is the vicar general of the Diocese of Rome, having been an auxiliary of the diocese for two years prior to that.
The 54-year-old cardinal’s appointment comes as the first major nomination made by the new Pope in the various offices of the Roman Curia, and is being welcomed by pro-life advocates. Though his public role has largely revolved around curial issues in the Diocese of Rome in recent years, his record on pro-life matters is believed to be more orthodox than that of the man he is replacing.
The Institute, more commonly known as the “John Paul II Institute” has been led by Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia as Grand Chancellor since 2016.
In was in August of that year that Pope Francis named Paglia to lead the John Paul II Institute and also to serve as president of the Pontifical Academy for Life. Both of these pontifical institutions were subject to drastic overhauls at the hands of Pope Francis and Paglia.
Paglia – who turned 80 a few weeks ago – enjoyed notable prominence during Francis’ pontificate, and was a key figure in implementing the changes to both pontifical institutes as ordered by Francis.
The gutting of the John Paul II institute began in earnest in 2019, with the dismissing of its president Monsignor Livio Melina and the immediate suspension of all professors.
Staff were subsequently selected who advocated for moral positions contrary to those previously defended by the Institute – such as defending homosexuality and contraception.

🇻🇦🇮🇹 POPE OFFERS VATICAN FOR RUSSIA-UKRAINE PEACE TALKS — WORLD LEADERS LISTEN
Pope Leo XIV has offered the Vatican as neutral ground for Russia-Ukraine peace talks—and for once, world leaders seem to agree.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the proposal was welcomed by Zelensky, Macron, Merz, and Trump, following a call between the U.S. and Russian presidents.
Meloni:
“Work is underway to immediately start negotiations between the parties that can lead to a ceasefire as soon as possible and build the conditions for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
In this regard, the Holy Father’s willingness to host the talks at the Vatican was considered positive.
Italy is ready to do its part to facilitate contacts and work for peace.”
The Vatican, better known for diplomacy than diplomacy-by-drone, may now host one of the most consequential conversations of the 21st century.
A ceasefire isn’t a sure thing—but if anything can break the deadlock, it might just be white smoke from St. Peter’s.

The Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has launched an investigation into the employment practices of the city of Chicago after Mayor Brandon Johnson made comments on Sunday suggesting that he has "made hiring decisions solely on the basis of race."
Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon wrote in a letter to Johnson that the probe was opened to investigate potential violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
"Our investigation is based on information suggesting that you have made hiring decisions solely on the basis of race. In your remarks made yesterday at the Apostolic Church of God in Woodlawn, you 'highlight[ed] the number of Black officials in [your] administration,'" the letter stated, noting that Johnson highlighted multiple high-ranking positions that were held by black men and women.
"You then said that you were 'laying' these positions 'out' to 'ensure that our people get a chance to grow their business,'" Dhillon continued. "Considering these remarks, I have authorized an investigation to determine whether the City of Chicago is engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination as set forth above. If these kind of hiring decisions are being made for top-level positions in your administration, then it begs the question whether such decisions are also being made for lower-level positions."

The Department of Education (ED) on Friday rescinded a $37.7 million fine applied to Grand Canyon University (GCU) under the Biden administration.
The fine was the largest ever proposed against a university and sparked allegations that the Biden administration was targeting and harshly punishing Christian universities. ED under the Trump administration dismissed the case with “no findings” of wrongdoing by the university, according to GCU, and with prejudice, meaning the suit can’t be brought again.
“Unlike the previous Administration, we will not persecute and prosecute colleges and universities based on their religious affiliation,” Ellen Keast, an ED spokesman, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “The Trump Administration will continue to ensure every institution of higher education is held accountable based on facts – but Department enforcement will be for the purpose of serving students, not political bias.”
ED announced in 2023 it was issuing the fine due to an investigation allegedly finding GCU “substantially” misrepresented the cost of its doctoral program.
“The facts clearly support our contention that we were wrongly accused of misleading our Doctoral students and we appreciate the recognition that those accusations were without merit,” GCU President Brian Mueller said in the university’s announcement. “GCU is a leader in innovation, transparency and best practices in higher education and we look forward to working cooperatively with the Department in the future – just as we have with all regulatory agencies.”
That same year ED attempted to go after GCU’s tax-exempt nonprofit status, claiming it did not fit the requirements, evne though the IRS had recognized its status. GCU ended up suing and winning against the department in 2024.
The American Principles Project in April called on Congress to investigate former President Joe Biden’s “attacks” on Christian colleges and universities, alleging they were targeted at an unfair rate compared to secular institutions. The letter, first obtained by the DCNF, found that the fine levied against GCU combined with a $14 million fine issued against Liberty University “total more than all other penalties assessed by the Department of Education over the past seven years.”

For the first time in history, there are more registered Republicans than Democrats in Florida’s Miami-Dade County.
Florida’s Voice reported 464,370 Republicans and 440,790 Democrats are now registered to vote in Miami-Dade County, one of Florida’s blue strongholds, as of Monday morning. That means a whopping 59 of 67 counties in Florida are now red.

Trump Criticizes Biden’s Doctors for Alleged Cancer Cover-Up and Autopen Use
(The Center Square) – A record number of people are applying for jobs in federal law enforcement and border security positions in the Trump administration.
In the first four months of the administration, U.S. Border Patrol received 34,650 applications, representing a 44% increase over the same four-month period in 2024, The Center Square reported. Under U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks, Texas’ first border czar, the first quarter of 2025 marks “the most successful four-month recruitment stretch in the agency’s history.”
The U.S. Coast Guard also saw a massive spike of applications after failing to meet recruiting targets every year under the Biden administration.
Since January, the Coast Guard is on track to exceed its recruitment goals by 110%, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security says. So far this fiscal year, the Coast Guard has already recruited more than 4,700 new members, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said. Under Trump, the Coast Guard has surged resources to secure U.S. borders and is seizing record amounts of illicit drugs, The Center Square reported.
The U.S. Department of Defense is also seeing a record number of recruits. After failing to meet recruitment goals every year during the Biden administration, in February 2025, all five military services met their recruiting goals.
During an April 30, 2025, cabinet meeting, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described what was happening as a “recruiting renaissance.”
“It’s been decades since we’ve seen this kind of recruiting in the Army, the Navy, the Marine Corps and the Air Force,” he said. “We can barely absorb the volume and retention [is also up] – men and women in the military don’t want to get out.”
The surge came after the Trump administration announced it was ending so-called diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) hiring and other policies and offering reinstatement to service members who were ousted because their religious accommodation requests were denied during the DOD’s COVID vaccine mandate. The DOD also began voluntary separation with roughly 1,000 service members diagnosed with gender dysphoria.
