NEW ORLEANS (AP) —Authorities have arrested a 33-year-old Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office maintenance workerin connection with the escape of 10 jail inmates, the Louisiana Attorney General’s office said Tuesday.

Sterling Williams admitted to law enforcement that one of the escapees “advised him to turn the water off in the cell” before the men slipped away through a hole behind a toilet, the Attorney General’s office said in a statement.

“Instead of reporting the inmate, Williams turned the water off as directed allowing the inmates to carry out their scheme to successfully escape,” it said.

Williams is charged with 10 counts of principle to simple escape and malfeasance in office.

Sheriff Susan Hutson has said she believes the jail break was an inside job and last week told reporters her agency had suspended three employees pending an investigation.

“It’s almost impossible, not completely, but almost impossible for anybody to get out of this facility without help,” she said of the Orleans Justice Center, a correctional facility where 1,400 people are being held.

The inmates escaped early Friday while the lone guard watching them went to get food.

At least one of the steel bars protecting plumbing fixtures “appeared to have been intentionally cut using a tool,” the sheriff’s office stated.

The inmates quickly shed their uniforms and changed into regular clothes.

The absence of the inmates, many charged with or convicted of violent offenses such as murder, was not reported for hours. Four have since been apprehended and six remain at large.

Since the escape, Hutson has pointed to long-standing deficiencies such as faulty locks and staffing shortages. But a growing number of state and local officials have said blame for the escape rests squarely on her for failing her responsibility to keep inmates locked up.

The New Orleans City Council is scheduled to discuss the jail break with the sheriff’s office and other authorities Tuesday.

CBS News in distress amid Trump’s pressure campaign: ‘There’s a lot of fear’

Sometimes the arguments could be heard well down the hall. The topic was “60 Minutes,” and the tension was audible. CBS News chief Wendy McMahon was clashing with her bosses over upcoming stories on the newsmagazine —in part because President Trump’s legally dubious lawsuit against CBS meant that billions of dollars were at risk.

“Wendy was standing up for us,” a veteran CBS journalist said. “There’s a lot of fear about what happens with her gone now.” McMahon stepped down on Monday, under pressure from CBS parent Paramount Global, intensifying the impression that CBS News is in distress due to Trump’s political pressure and other business factors.

While CBS journalists are doing their jobs and covering the Trump administration assertively, Paramount lawyers are trying to strike a settlement with Trump, perhaps believing that such a deal will help secure the administration’s approval of a pending merger. With the Trump tug-of-war on everyone’s minds, getting and keeping “60 Minutes” on the air this spring was a week-by-week challenge, according to people at the network.

McMahon repeatedly defended the program in conversations with Paramount Global co-CEO George Cheeks, who himself was under pressure from controlling shareholder Shari Redstone. While some of the internal battles have been previously reported, five sources who spoke with CNN on condition of anonymity said the fights were much more fraught than the viewing public realizes.

There was one hint about it on-air, last month, after “60 Minutes” executive producer Bill Owens resigned, citing a loss of independence.“No one here is happy about it,” correspondent Scott Pelley said of the interference Owens had sensed. The alleged corporate meddling began several months earlier.

One of the disputes was over CBS News coverage of the Israel-Hamas war.Redstone, a strong supporter of Israel and Jewish causes, lodged objections over what she sensed was biased coverage of the conflict.

For a newsmagazine like “60 Minutes” with a long, proud tradition of independence, Redstone’s involvement was deeply troubling. One of her chief complaints was about a January “60 Minutes” segment that highlighted America’s support for Israel’s bombing of Gaza.

McMahon mediated the conflict over that report, as well as multiple disputes over “60 Minutes” reports about Trump’s return to office and the impact of his administration’s policy changes.

It was clear, the five sources said, that Paramount was primarily concerned about how the tough Trump coverage would impact the lawsuit and settlement talks. (The New York Times reported Monday that Trump’s team threatened to file another lawsuit over a “60 Minutes” segment on Trump targeting big law firms.)

One of the people involved said McMahon played the role of educator, or at least tried to, “explaining the importance of journalistic independence” to Paramount leadership.

There is a long history of news division chiefs serving as firewalls between a corporate parent and a newsroom.

The big difference in this case is the Trump lawsuit over last October’s “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris, which Trump claimed was deliberately mis-edited at the behest of the Democratic campaign.

Legal experts have derided the lawsuit as frivolous and laughable, and CBS defended the newsmagazine and its editorial judgment on First Amendment grounds. A full transcript of the Harris interview only further confirmed that “60 Minutes” engaged in normal editing processes.

However, the suit posed a very serious problem for Redstone, who struck a merger deal with Skydance Media in mid-2024.That deal is now awaiting Trump administration approval. Redstone has pushed to settle the lawsuit, despite the widely held assessment that CBS lawyers would prevail against Trump in court.

In a letter to Redstone that was made public on Tuesday, three Democratic senators questioned whether Paramount is in danger of violating bribery laws. That question has also come up inside CBS News. At “60 Minutes,” “everyone thinks this lawsuit is an act of extortion, everyone,” a network correspondent told CNN.

The far-flung “60 Minutes” staff — while rarely all together at the network’s midtown Manhattan headquarters — is united in confidence that the program did nothing wrong, despite Trump’s wild allegations about the Harris interview.

But there is also a widespread sense of resignation that the Trump settlement will happen, one way or another.

Citing a source close to the negotiations, CNN’sJake Tapper reported that Paramount could pay Trump as much as $30 to 50 million.

McMahon and Owens told colleagues that they would not apologize to Trump as a part of any settlement, so their departures may portend an imminent deal. McMahon had detractors in and around CBS, too, and those people have pointed to other reasons for her exit. The news division’s recent reformatting of the “CBS Evening News” is widely thought to be a misfire, for instance, and the newscast will likely be retooled — again — once McMahon is out of the picture.

But “despite all her miscalculations, she was viewed as the last thing standing between us and Redstone,” one of the sources said. When Owens stepped down, CBS journalists feared that in-the-works “60 Minutes” segments about Trump could be quashed. Journalists talked with each other about how to preserve the material.

According to several sources, McMahon worked behind the scenes to protect the reports.McMahon, Cheeks and Redstone have not commented about the “60 Minutes” disputes.

Ultimately, the newsmagazine’s reputation has been protected. Week after week,CBS has broadcast substantive investigations about Trump and other subjects.

Ahead of the newsmagazine’s traditional mid-May season finale, a scheduled report about Trump’s planned cutbacks to the IRS was held back, but for sound journalistic reasons, according to the network.

A CBS spokesperson said that “the roughly 7,000 probationary employees who were dismissed from their jobs” at the IRS were being called back to work, thus changing the segment altogether. “Our team will continue to report on these new details and will broadcast the story in the future,” CBS said.

With McMahon exiting, her recently named No. 2, CBS News president Tom Cibrowski, will now report directly to Cheeks.CBS journalists said they are hopeful that Cibrowski, an award-winning journalist and executive, will act as a heat shield with Paramount — and Skydance, assuming the merger is approved.

Ukrainian terrorist plots foiled near Kremlin – Putin to Trump

The Russian president told his US counterpart that Kiev tried to intimidate foreign leaders visiting Moscow on Victory Day, Putin’s aide has said

Russian President Vladimir Putin informed his US counterpart,Donald Trump, of several foiled terrorist attacks in Moscow ahead of the Victory Day celebrations earlier this month, pointing the finger at Ukraine, according to an aide to the Russian president, Yury Ushakov.

The senior official noted that the discussion took place during the two presidents’ phone call on Monday.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Ushakov said Putin told Trump that the “threat of terrorist attacks in [central Moscow] – near the Kremlin and Red Square – was thwarted” shortly before the celebrations.

According to the official, Putin also stated that the “Ukrainians directly threatened foreign participants in the [Victory Day] festivities [and] attempted to… prevent their arrival in Moscow.”

Ahead of the May 9 celebrations, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky said Kiev could not guarantee the safety of foreign dignitaries visiting the Russian capital. Nevertheless, the leaders of 28 nations attended the event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

Among the countries whose representatives visited the Russian capital were China, Brazil, Egypt, Venezuela, Cuba, Serbia, Slovakia, Belarus and other former Soviet republics, as well as other African and Asian countries. Putin hailed the “political courage” of the foreign attendees.

Romanians destroy passports after pro-EU candidate’s election win (VIDEOS)

Expats are cutting up their documents in protest after nationalist candidate George Simion lost to Nicusor Dan

Dozens of Romanians have posted videos of themselves cutting up their passports in protest against the outcome of the country’s latest presidential election.

The controversial vote, suspended last year by the country’s constitutional court, saw the pro-EU mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, defeat his Euroskeptic rival, George Simion, with 54% of second round votes.

On TikTok and other platforms, Romanians living abroad began sharing clips in which they can be seen destroying their passports.

“This is my vote for Romania. My vote is worth nothing. We will never return,” one woman said in a widely viewed video.

“Romania is dead,”proclaimed another netizen in a separate clip.

The passport-cutting campaign comes amid claims from Simion and his supporters that the election had been manipulated by Romanian authorities, who allegedly coordinated with foreign powers to sway the vote.

Simion claims that the electoral rolls contained some 1.7 million fictitious names and accused the government of busing in voters from neighboring Moldova.

Simion’s Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) has also claimed that Moldova’s pro-EU ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) had directed its million-strong diaspora in Romania to support Dan.

They point to an increase of over 70% in the Moldovan diaspora vote compared to the first round. Around 30% of Moldova’s population are dual Moldovan-Romanian citizens. Their votes constituted almost 25% of the total of Sunday’s turnout, according to the AUR.

Simion had been a supporter of the independent right-wing candidate Calin Georgescu, a NATO and EU critic, who won the first round of elections in November 2024, but which were later annulled by Romania’s Constitutional Court, which alleged foreign interference. Georgescu was later barred from running again in what Simion claimed was a “coup d’état.”

Telegram founder Pavel Durov has claimed that French intelligence attempted to pressure him into censoring conservative Romanian channels ahead of the vote. Paris has denied the claim while Romanian officials have in turn accused Russia of interference, but have not presented any evidence to support their claim.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has dismissed the allegations and has described the election as “strange,” arguing that the candidate with the strongest support had been “forcibly” removed without justification.

Peskov reacted with credulity to Durov’s claims of European interference, noting the EU’s long history of meddling in the internal affairs of other states.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has also denied Bucharest’s accusations of election interference and dismissed Romania’s latest vote as illegitimate. Officials should clean up their own “electoral mess” instead of blaming others, she said.

Ukraine-born model suspected in arson attack on British PM’s home – media

Another suspect in the case is a Ukrainian national who reportedly has similar career aspirations

A Ukrainian-born male model has become the second suspect to be charged in a UK arson investigation involving properties linked to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, national media have reported.

Romanian citizen Stanislav Carpiuc, 26, was charged with conspiring alongside fellow suspect Roman Lavrynovych – a Ukrainian national who was detained last week – and others in a series of attacks targeting locations in north London, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police on Tuesday.

Carpiuc was arrested Saturday at London Luton Airport by counterterrorism officers, who were called in because the properties are connected to “a high-profile public figure,” police said. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning and was remanded in custody until a further hearing alongside Lavrynovych on June 6.

According to British media, the targets of the arson between May 8 and May 12 included a car once owned by Starmer, his private residence, and an address he used to live at.

Carpiuc is believed to be the same individual listed as a male model based in London. According to public profiles, he was born in Chernivtsi, a town in western Ukraine with a significant ethnic Romanian population.

The Daily Mail reported that Carpiuc is an aspiring actor and currently works in construction.

Lavrynovych, 21, a Ukrainian national arrested on Tuesday last week, reportedly runs a building company and has also signed with a modelling agency.

A third suspect, a 34-year-old individual whose identity has not been released, was arrested Monday and remains in custody, police said.

Both Carpiuc and Lavrynovych have been charged with reckless endangerment of life. According to The Telegraph, the Starmer family home located in Tufnell Park is currently rented by the prime minister’s sister-in-law and was occupied during the attack.

Addressing Parliament last week, Starmer condemned the alleged arsons, calling them “an attack on all of us, on democracy and the values that we stand for.”

Ukrainian charged in arson attack on British PM’s home

Police have confirmed no injuries occurred during the three separate incidents in north London

A Ukrainian national has beencharged with multiple counts of arson following a series of fires, including one at a property owned by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed.

In a statement issued on Thursday, police said Roman Lavrynovych, 21, of Sydenham in south London, faces three counts of arson with intent to endanger life.The charges relate to a string of incidents between May 8 and May 12, including a vehicle fire, a blaze at the entrance of a property, and a third fire at a residential address.

The first fire took place on May 8, when a Toyota Rav4 was set alight in Kentish Town. The car had previously belonged to Starmer but had been sold to a neighbor, according to the Telegraph newspaper.

On May 11, another fire broke out at the entrance of a flat in Islington that Starmer reportedly owned in the 1990s. In the early hours of May 12, a third fire was reported at the Prime Minister’s current family home in Tufnell Park, which is now rented out to his sister-in-law, according to the media.

While the entrance and front door were damaged, no injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

The Metropolitan Police said its Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation “due to the property having previous connections with a high-profile public figure.”

Lavrynovych was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday and has remained in custody since. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Starmer himself has described the attacks as an “attack on all of us, on our democracy and the values that we stand for.”

According to the Telegraph, investigators are exploring a number of potential motives, including whether a hostile state might have been involved, although no evidence of such a link has been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Lavrynovych’s neighbors in Sydenham have described him as quiet and unremarkable. “He was a normal guy – like us,” one person told reporters. Another, who had lived in the flat above him for seven years, said he was “a normal boy,” noting that he didn’t speak English too well.

When the Bill Clinton presidential team in 2000 burrowed into the DNC, and installed HRC into the NY Senate seat, through heavy influence in primary machine politics, the Clintons were the happiest Dems in the country when W squeaked by Gore, leaving them in full control of the DNC money laundering operation for the duration of the W years.

“8 years of Bill, then 8 years of Hill,” was all going according to plan, with Hollywood planting Hillary as President “Easter eggs” throughout media of the 1990’s.

The 2008 primary was the culmination of their plan started decades earlier.

Obama’s 2004 DNC Speech and his Jefferson-Jackson speech were to place him as the heir apparent, but their lock over the DNC (and the superdelegates) was fait accompli.

Even Obama running a near flawless campaign wouldn’t have been enough on its own.

The superdelegate tsunami was stopped in its tracks and the rest is history.

With an embittered Hillary not ready to abandon decades of planning and ride off into the sunset, she first hoped McCain would somehow best Obama and then moved to burrow into his administration to maintain some level of control/access to theDNC money laundering operation her crime family ruled over for the better part of two decades.

Obama knew she would be disloyal outside of the administration, even worse in the Senate, spending each moment plotting a 2012 primary challenge (same reason she could never have been VP, she would have poisoned him if given the slot).

US Attorney Comes Up with Ingenious Response to Sanctuary State: 'We're Going to Flood the System'

One of the biggest platforms that President Donald Trump ran on — in both election victories, as a matter of fact — was a promise to tighten up America’s borders and crack down on illegal immigration.

It was a rallying cry in his first term and a plan of action in his current term. But it hasn’t been easy for the president.

In fact, it’s been anything but a smooth ride for Trump, as a number of deep blue cities and states began doing what they could to defy the president via “sanctuary” policies, which effectively gives the state carte blanche to ignore presidential directives.

The Trump administration has been vigorously fighting back against these sanctuary efforts, but — to use a pair of Greek analogies — the Sisyphean task honestly feels like lopping the head off a hydra, only to see another three or four sanctuary cities pop up. It’s been a struggle, to say the least. (Not to say Trump hasn’t been effective in cracking down on illegal immigration, he’s just facing tons of opposition to it.)

Now, however, one attorney in a deep blue state may have found an ingenious loophole to largely circumvent the sanctuary policies that have plagued this administration’s efforts to clean up immigration.

United States Attorney for the District of California Bill Essayli is launching “Operation Guardian Angel,” a task force comprised of a number of former law enforcement officials from ICE, HSI, DEA, FBI, ATF, and Border Patrol.

The purpose of this task force? “[T]o begin scanning a criminal database every single day to identify arrested illegal aliens in local jurisdictions that DOJ can charge with felony illegal-reentry,” according to Fox News.

“They’ve made it almost impossible for ICE to do their job, issue detainers and get criminal illegal immigrants out of jails.So what we’re doing instead is, we’re going to start issuing warrants,” Essayli told Fox.

And he wants to overwhelm the sanctuary policy pushers with this move.

“We’re going to flood the system with warrants for criminal illegal immigration that are in county jails. They can ignore a detainer, but they cannot ignore a criminal arrest warrant,” Essayli said. “As soon as an illegal immigrant is booked into a county jail, we’re reviewing their file.

“And if they meet the elements of illegal reentry, which is a federal crime, we are filing a complaint and getting an arrest warrant issued before they’re released from state custody.”

Essayli claims that“Operation Guardian Angel” is effectively a beta test for other statesto try and tamper down on destructive sanctuary policies.

The U.S. attorney claims his team is ready to file up to 50 warrants a week in their jurisdiction, which includes the sizable Los Angeles. Essayli seems confident that this workaround should prevent much — if any — opposition from sanctuary policies.

“They have no choice. They will comply,” he said. “And if they don’t comply, if they interfere in our ability to arrest a federal felon, they can expect to face consequences for that. So I don’t expect any resistance from the
