Russian Army Downs Over 100 Ukrainian Drones in Third Night of Air Attacks
May 23, 2025
Russia’s Defense Ministry said early Friday that it had downed more than 100 Ukrainian drones in a third consecutive night of air attacks across the country and annexed Crimea, as regional officials reported several injuries in the strikes.
Two dozen drones were destroyed over the Moscow region, the most of any region, according to the military.
Crimea, which Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014, saw the second-highest number, with 22 drones reportedly shot down.
Drones were also intercepted over the regions of Kursk, Oryol, Tula, Bryansk, Ryazan, Belgorod, Ivanovo, Vladimir, Voronezh and Lipetsk, the ministry said.
In the Lipetsk region south of Moscow, eight people were injured by falling debris after drones were downed over an industrial zone, regional Governor Igor Artamonov said.
He urged residents to stay indoors and keep away from windows.
Unconfirmed reports from Telegram news channels claimed a battery manufacturing facility in Lipetsk was targeted. The facility allegedly produces batteries for the Russian military, including for drones.
Ukraine has launched major drone barrages against Russia for three straight nights, damaging infrastructure and prompting flight delays as airports near Moscow restrict operations during the attacks.
A Ukrainian military spokesperson told The Kyiv Independent this week that the drone strikes are meant to destabilize Russia internally and lower public morale.
“Sleeping in tents at the airport is not the highest price, but it does affect morale,” the spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, authorities in the Kursk region said 16 people were injured in a Ukrainian rocket strike late Thursday on the town of Lgov, near where President Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to the border region earlier this week.

Security Scare In Moscow: Drone Attack Hits Airport Before Indian MPs' Arrival
Friday, May 23, 2025, 17:34 [IST]
Moments before a flight carrying an Indian parliamentary delegation, headed by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, was set to land, a drone strike occurred at Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport.
The jet circled the airport for a long time before it was ultimately permitted to land because of the incident. As part of 'Operation Sindoor', a global outreach campaign, the group left India on May 22, 2025.
The arrival of the Indian MPs was delayed because no planes were allowed to land at the time of the incident due to the security threat.
Following a protracted flight, the plane successfully touched down, and Vinay Kumar, the Indian Ambassador to Russia, and other embassy staff met the delegates and made sure they were securely taken to their hotel.
Prior to a two-day agenda full of meetings and talks on May 23 and 24, the all-party delegation, led by Kanimozhi, was in Moscow.
Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai, BJP MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta (Retd.), RJD MP Prem Chand Gupta, AAP MP Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, and former Indian diplomat Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri are among the group, according to the Indian Embassy in Moscow.
The Indian Embassy stressed in a statement that the visit is in line with India's current Operation Sindoor operations and demonstrates the nation's unwavering opposition to terrorism in all its manifestations.
Senior officials from the Russian Federation's Federation Council and State Duma, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, prominent think tanks, and media representatives are among the people the group is anticipated to meet with.
The embassy reiterated that the visit's goal is to promote diplomatic engagement while conveying India's unwavering stance of zero tolerance for terrorism.
The visit demonstrates New Delhi's dedication to international collaboration in strategic discourse and counterterrorism.

Ukrainian Drones Cripple Key Russian Plant Powering Missiles, Drones, and War Tech
May 23, 2025, 11:27 am
Ukrainian drones struck a major Russian weapons plant overnight in the city of Yelets, setting off a large fire and halting operations at a facility critical to Moscow’s military supply chain.
The attack targeted the Energia plant in Russia’s Lipetsk region, local officials and Ukrainian sources confirmed Friday, May 23. The facility is a major supplier of batteries and power systems used across Russia’s defense sector.
Overall, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had downed at least 112 Ukrainian drones in a third night of attacks, with Moscow again targeted with strikes that disrupted operations at several airports.
The Lipetsk governor Igor Artamonov said debris from downed drones caused a fire in an industrial area and injured eight people. Another drone hit the roof of an apartment building, damaging 20 units.
No deaths were reported. Artamonov did not name the facility but denied reports that it had caused a leak of hazardous chemicals.
Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation reported the plant’s shutdown following the strike.
“The plant is under sanctions from the EU, the US, Japan, and other countries because of its importance to Russia’s military-industrial complex – that nevertheless continued to operate.
As of now, after the attack, the plant is suspending its work,” Andrii Kovalenko, the center’s head said.
Energia produces lithium-ion and mercury-zinc batteries used in drones, aircraft, naval vessels, and electronic warfare systems.
Its products also support communications, control systems, simulators for tanks and missiles, and weapons including Iskander and Kinzhal missiles.
The plant also manufactures electrochemical capacitors and light-optical power sources that can supply power independently without laying external lines.
The independent Exilenova+ Telegram channel confirmed the fire at the plant. Kommersant previously reported that Energia had recently doubled its output and planned further growth in 2025 to meet increasing demand from Russia’s armed forces.
The strike follows another drone attack on May 21, which targeted a microelectronics plant in the Orel region. That facility also caught fire but reported no injuries.
Russia and Ukraine have deployed drones against one another on a near daily basis since Russia launched its military offensive on Ukraine more than three years ago, but Moscow has rarely been targeted.
On Thursday, flights were halted at several Moscow airports, Russia’s aviation authority Rosaviatsiya said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly rebuffed calls by Kyiv and the West for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire.

John Deere Acquires Drone Camera Maker to Integrate Aerial Field Scouting
May 23, 2025
MOLINE, Illinois — John Deere today announced the acquisition of Sentera, a provider of remote imagery solutions for agriculture.
The company expects the acquisition to advance the capabilities of John Deere's existing technology offerings, providing farmers and ag service providers with a more comprehensive set of tools to generate and use data to make decisions that improve farm profitability, efficiency, and sustainability.
Headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, Sentera makes cameras that are compatible with most major drone platforms and enable farmers and crop scouts to quickly and efficiently capture high-resolution data at scale.
When combined with FieldAgent software tools, they help farmers and agronomists assess plant-level health, identify stressors, and take action.
In addition, SMARTSCRIPT™ Weeds, a customized herbicide prescription, can be delivered to sprayers with individual nozzle control.
Drones equipped with Sentera technology fly over fields at high speeds and generate high-resolution images. These images are processed with Sentera's FieldAgent application to identify the exact location of specific weeds and generate a weed map.
This map becomes a targeted prescription for how much product a farmer needs to load into their sprayer, helping minimize waste. Once the prescription is generated, it can be wirelessly sent to compatible equipment through the John Deere Operations Center.
Weed maps are just one example of actionable data that is enabled with Sentera scouting technology.
The same process can be used in a field to assess crop stand uniformity, disease pressure, and pests. Integrating Sentera also supports John Deere's approach to meeting farmers where they are on the technology adoption journey.
It offers new precision capabilities to a broad range of customers while also complementing more advanced precision ag technologies, including See & Spray™.
Sentera will continue to supply cameras directly to drone manufacturers for integration into their products, as well as sell to farmers, agronomists, ag retailers, and other users.
The John Deere Operations Center will continue to be open for other drone imagery providers for integration, as well, ensuring customers and their trusted advisors continue to have choices on the solutions that work best for their operation.

Boost for Kazakh oil exports after pipeline repairs completed
23 May 2025, 05:01
Caspian Pipeline Consortium restarted operations at a key pumping station in Russia on Friday, three months after it was taken out of service by a Ukrainian drone attack aimed at disrupting Russian oil exports.
The repairs mean that the pipeline, which handles about 80% of Kazakhstan's oil exports, is now able to operate at its capacity, shipping 1.6 million barrels per day from Kazakhstan.
The operator said in a statement on Friday that the repair work had focused on a gas-fired power generation facility which was severely damaged in the attack at the Kropotkinskaya station in February.
The restart of operations at Kropotkinskaya will reduce the load on other pumping facilities along the 1500-kilometre pipeline, which runs from Kazakhstan's largest oilfield, Tengiz, to a marine terminal near the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.
Those stations temporarily increased pumping of oil from Tengiz and two other major Kazakh developments, Kashagan and Karachaganak, enabling flows via the network to continue uninterrupted and even increase in March and April.
The higher volume of Kazakh oil exports via the link is due to increased output from the Tengiz field.
In the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of this year, the field's Chevron-led operator, Tengizchevroil, commissioned its latest in-field facilities as part of its $47.1 billion expansion programme to boost production by at least 260,000 barrels per day to over 860,000 bpd.
Russian oil flows discontinued
While Moscow has reduced its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in the last two months, Ukrainian drones have continued to target Russian energy facilities.
In the latest assault earlier this week, drones targeted a major oil refinery near the Russian city of Ryazan, with local residents reporting anti-drone fire near the facility, and US satellites identifying a fire at the location on Thursday.
Responding to the risk of further attacks on Kropotkinskaya by Ukrainian forces, Caspian Pipeline Consortium said in Friday's statement that the facility will not ship any Russian crude — which has previously been mixed with oil from Kazakhstan — from the Kavkazskaya transshipment facility located several kilometres away.
Prior to the disruption, Russian producers transported their high quality light oil to Kavkazskaya via rail, where it was fed into a pipeline connecting it with the Kropotkinskaya station.
On 19 March, several drones hit Kavkazskaya's storage reservoirs at a time when the facility's tanks were at capacity after oil was unable to be offloaded into the Caspian Pipeline via Kropotkinskaya.
The fire at the facility was only brought under control on 25 March, according to a social network message by governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region Veniamin Kondratyev.
The pipeline operator also said on Friday that the restart at Kropotkinskaya coincides with completion of maintenance that halted operations along the whole pipeline, as well as at its pumping stations in Kazakhstan and Russia and the Black Sea export terminal, for 72 hours.
The pipeline safely resumed “scheduled tanker loadings” in the Black Sea earlier on Friday, the operator said.

Stealth drone landed in Wyoming demanding fuel?
May 23, 2025
Claim:
An autonomous stealth drone landed in an airport in Casper, Wyoming, and transmitted a message over airport radio demanding more fuel.
Rating:
Labeled Satire
On May 18, 2025, Facebook page Casper Planet shared a post with an image of a drone with the caption, "Autonomous stealth drone lands at Casper Airport, demands fuel and reassigned flight path."
The post went on to describe how the apparent drone communicated over the airport radio airwaves and efficiently redirected other aircraft in the Casper-Natrona County International Airport in Wyoming.
The post stated:
According to airport staff, the aircraft touched down on Runway 21 around 3:13 p.m., unannounced and entirely undetected by radar systems until visual confirmation.
The drone then taxied to the fuel depot, paused, and transmitted a message over all airport radio frequencies: "Low on fuel. Please advise. Prefer Jet A. Also, your traffic pattern is inefficient. I'm fixing it."
At first, air traffic controllers assumed it was a prank. "We thought it was some guy with a really expensive toy and too much free time," said tower supervisor Dale Simmons.
"Then it rerouted four incoming aircraft to a new pattern that actually was more efficient. Honestly, it had better traffic management than Steve."
Passengers on the ground reported seeing the aircraft hover silently near Gate 2 before activating what appeared to be a series of deployable refueling arms and self-attaching nozzles.
"It refueled itself," said baggage handler Wyatt Pruett. "I've never seen anything do that. Then it told the refueling truck to 'stand down'."
Despite repeated attempts to identify its origin, the drone would only respond with the phrase, "I am not a threat unless provoked."
The above post was shared more than 2,000 times and had more than 1,000 comments.
Some readers assumed the story to be real, with one comment attempting to identify the aircraft in the image: "BAE Systems Taranis, a prototype unmanned combat aerial vehicle."
Users on X also shared the story. A variation of the post on Facebook on May 19 claimed the drone landed at the Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
However, the above story is not real. It originated from a Facebook page that describes itself as satirical in nature. As such, this claim is labeled satire.
A Google search about a "stealth drone" in Casper, Wyoming, came up with no credible reporting of the apparent event at the airport.
We also conducted a reverse-image search of the image from the Facebook post and found no authentic sources that would indicate this was a real photograph.
The "Introduction" section of Casper Planet's Facebook page states: "Delivering the Snews that doesn't matter directly to your Snews feed. Did we say this is satire? Well it is, names/locations are made up."
The page frequently shares fake stories, including one about the highway patrol in Wyoming using a "hyper-realistic decoy moose" to catch speeders.
Snopes has addressed other satirical stories stemming from the account in the past, including the claim that a "ghost ship" from the 1700s washed ashore in St. Augustine, Florida, after Hurricane Milton.

Pakistani drone with Rs 5 crore heroin seized in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar
May 23, 2025
Border Security Force (BSF) officials seized heroin valued at Rs 5 crore after intercepting a drone from Pakistan near the international border in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar on Friday.
According to Gaurav Yadav, SP, Ganganagar, the drone was spotted in a field located between Kailash Post and Sherpura Post in Anupgarh.
Villagers noticed the suspicious object and immediately alerted the local police.
Personnel from the BSF rushed to the spot and recovered a yellow packet containing one kilogram of heroin, attached to the drone.
“The consignment, believed to have been sent from Pakistan, was found near the barbed-wire fencing along the international border. The estimated value of the heroin in the international market is Rs 5 crore,” he added.
Yadav told IANS that “The packet looks around one month old, however, we will investigate further to dig into detail”.
The BSF officials were handing over the consignment to the police till the filing of this report.
The BSF has launched a massive search operation along the border, and all security agencies have been put on high alert to prevent further attempts. This seizure is the latest in a series of drug smuggling attempts from across the border in 2025.
Earlier, on March 13, a 1.6 kg heroin packet was recovered near the 4 FD check post in the Gajsinghpur police station area.
On March 20, three kilograms of heroin were recovered near the Rawala area (village 12 KND) by BSF personnel after a drone drop.
On April 2, a crashed drone was found in a field near Chak 11F, Sheikhsarpal Border Post, Karanpur. It contained 500 grams of heroin worth approximately Rs 25 crore.(Agency)

Cholera spikes in Khartoum after drone attacks cut power, water supply
Friday 23/05/2025
More than 2,300 people have been diagnosed with cholera in Sudan over the past three weeks, authorities said, 90 percent of them in the capital and surrounding areas where drone attacks have cut off electricity and water supplies.
At least 51 people have died as a result, the health ministry’s emergency operations centre said in a statement, with cases concentrated in greater Khartoum’s Karari and Jabal Awlia localities.
The more than two-year-old war between the Sudanese army, which took full control of Khartoum state this week, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has spread hunger and disease and destroyed most health facilities.
Drone attacks on power stations, fuel depots and dams have knocked out power and running water, creating conditions for the spread of cholera, dengue fever, malaria and other diseases.
“Public services, already under enormous strain, struggled to cope with the compounded challenges brought by prolonged power loss,” the United Nations said in a report on Thursday.
The army, now facing accusations of use of chemical weapons, blames the RSF for the drone attacks.
Ground fighting is currently concentrated in the west of the country, in the Kordofan and Darfur regions as the army attempts to push the RSF further back.
Fighting broke out between the army and RSF in April 2023 after disagreements about the integration of the two forces during a transition to democracy.

Exercise Mainbrace: The military operation that changed UFO history forever
Update: May 23rd, 2025 05:28 EDT
In 1952, just seven years after Victory in Europe Day, NATO forces, comprised of the twelve founding members along with Greece and Turkey, which joined that year, reported observing a series of mysterious flying objects during peacetime military exercises.
These UFO sightings were becoming increasingly common in the United States, with newspaper headlines featuring stories from individuals who claimed to have spotted an alien vessel flying above their backyards.
What was Exercise Mainbrace?
Exercise Mainbrace was the name given to the first set of peacetime military preparations to take place by NATO members since the founding of the organization.
The exercises included over 80,000 men and 200 ships, and lasted from September 14 to September 25.
More than four sightings were recorded by the US non-profit research organization into UFO sightings, the National Investigations Committee On Aerial Phenomena (NICAP), during Exercise Membrance, with news stories from the time detailing that many of the witnesses assumed the objects to be weather balloons.
A triangular flying object was spotted just as the exercises were set to begin
On one occasion, an object that a Danish crew described later to investigators as triangular was spotted flying overhead at incredible speed.
This first sighting occurred on September 13, just as the men involved were getting into position to begin the 12 days of military exercises.
Reports later published by NICAP from the time also indicate that “the object emitted a bluish glow.”
According to Live Science, the sighting was made from the Danish destroyer ship, Willemoes, one of 200 ships that formed part of the military exercises.
The Lieutenant of the Willemoes estimated that the object was flying around 900 miles per hour.
British forces spot a UFO following the same trajectory as a fighter jet
Another sighting came on September 19 after a British fighter pilot had carried out their planned operation over the North Sea and was on the return to the Topcliffe airfield, in Yorkshire.
Whether it was an optical illusion caused by the sun’s reflections, soldiers in the group reported seeing a silver flying object above the Meteor jet piloted by one of their own. Though the flying heights were different, the trajectories matched up.
The report detailing the event said it occurred around 11:00 A.M, and that as the jet was set to make its landing, the object was “swaying back and forth like a pendulum."
“Lieutenant John W. Kilburn and other observers on the ground said that when the Meteor began circling, the UFO stopped,” wrote Richard Hall, a self-proclaimed Ufologist, and researchers for NICAP when the sightings took place.
Witnesses described the object as “disk-shapped,” a more traditional form for UFO sightings than the triangular object reported by the Danish crew.
The crew could not track the object, with Hall writing that after mirroring the pilot’s movements, “the disk suddenly took off westward at high speed, changed course, and disappeared to the southeast."
Images reportedly taken of a UFO spotted by US forces were never released to the public
The next day, a sighting was reported by US military members onboard the USS Franklin D. Rosevelet aircraft carrier. These members captured an image of the UFO, they say, which was described as “silvery” and “spherical.”
However, these photos were not made public, writes Hall, while adding that those who did see them described them as “excellent” and that "judging by the size of the object in each successive photo, one could see that it was moving rapidly.”
The crew and other military leaders ruled out the possibility of the object being a weather balloon.
At least three more sightings would be made during the remainder of Exercise Mainbrace.
In the years that followed, what was seen was attributed to the hype of UFO sightings that had just begun to take off.

Mysterious 'UFO' crash from 1897 in North Texas continues to spark debate
Updated: 10:50 PM CDT May 22, 2025
AURORA, Texas — Just before sunrise on April 17, 1897, the small town of Aurora, Texas, was reportedly the site of a mysterious event that has since become a topic of intrigue and speculation.
According to an article by local resident S.E. Haydon, published in the Dallas Morning News, an unidentified flying object – described as a cigar-shaped airship – collided with a windmill on the property of Judge J.S. Proctor.
The crash scattered debris across several acres, and the pilot – described as "not of this world" – was said to have died in the incident.
The wreckage was reportedly collected and disposed of in a nearby well, while the pilot's remains were buried with Christian rites in the Aurora Cemetery.
A stone marker was placed at the grave, but it has since been removed. Over the years, the site has become a point of interest for UFO enthusiasts and researchers.
The Aurora incident is often cited as one of the earliest recorded UFO crashes in American history, predating the more famous Roswell incident by nearly 50 years.
However, the authenticity of the event has been a subject of debate.
Some skeptics argue that the story was a hoax, concocted by Haydon to attract attention to the declining town. Despite the skepticism, investigations into the site have uncovered intriguing evidence.
In 2008, during a History Channel investigation, researchers opened the sealed well and discovered pieces of metal containing high levels of aluminum.
While the findings were inconclusive, they reignited interest in the incident.
Today, the Aurora Cemetery features a Texas Historical Commission marker acknowledging the incident.

'Strange' star pulses detected in search for extraterrestrial intelligence
May 22, 2025
An unusual pulse signal has been detected in the light of nearby stars — and it's left scientists scratching their heads, a study searching for extraterrestrial intelligence finds.
The pulses saw the stars become fainter and brighter in a fraction of a second, suggesting that something passed in front of — and partially obscured — the stars' light.
This doesn't mean aliens were zooming by in spaceships, but unknown alien activity is one of several possible explanations left on the table by the researcher who detected the signal.
Richard Stanton, a retired scientist who formerly worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has spent years with a 30-inch telescope scrutinizing more than 1,300 sun-like stars for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. He does this by measuring changes in light coming from individual stars.
This effort didn't yield anything particularly unusual until May 14, 2023, when Stanton detected two quick and identical pulses in the light of a star named HD 89389 — located around 102 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Ursa Major.
"No single pulse anything like these has ever been found in more than 1,500 hours of searching," Stanton wrote in the study, published April 23 in the journal Acta Astronautica.
Stanton checked historical data on starlight observations and found that a similar pair of pulse signals was recorded in 2019, this time in the light of a star called HD 217014, or 51 Pegasi.
After completing his study, Stanton then detected a third double pulse event in the light of another star (HD 12051) on Jan. 18, 2025. The pulse signals are currently unexplained.
However, Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute in California who was not involved in the study, urged caution when attributing the pulses to potential alien activity.
1/2
"There's a history (going back more than a century) of astronomical discoveries that were, at first, attributed to extraterrestrial beings, but in fact turned out to be natural phenomena," Shostak told Live Science in an email.
"Given that history, one should be cautious in saying that these 'starlight pulses' are due to extraterrestrials trying to get in touch."
Shostak added that he would expect any alien transmissions, be they optical, radio or something else, to convey information of some kind — because, as he puts it, clever aliens wouldn't go to the trouble and expense of sending empty signals into space.
"And as these signals seem to be both regular, kind of simple (two pulses) and repetitive, I'm more than a little inclined to say that we're dealing with astrophysical phenomena here — not an attempt by some alien society to send interstellar telegrams," he said.
Even so, the pulses of light coming from HD 89389 were "strange," according to Stanton's study.
The star's light was reduced by about a quarter in one-tenth of a second. No known phenomenon could have caused the star itself to change in brightness and then revert back to normal so quickly, according to the study.
There are plenty of objects in and around Earth that regularly obscure stars in the night sky, causing their brightness to flicker. However, Stanton found that the usual suspects for obscuring stars, like airplanes, birds, satellites and meteors around Earth, didn't explain these pulses.
For example, objects like airplanes and asteroids typically obscure all of the star's light, but HD 89389 never completely disappeared.
What's more, Stanton snaps images of the stars while measuring the photons they emit, and these images often pick up passing satellites that have obscured a star's light. However, there wasn't anything visible in the images of HD 89389 to explain the pulses.
"Nothing was found in any of these frames, suggesting that the source of the pulses was either invisible, such as due to some atmospheric effect, or too far away to be detected," Stanton wrote.
One possible explanation is the activity of an extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI), but it would have to be near to Earth (relatively speaking) because of how rapidly the stars changed in brightness.
"Whatever is modulating the star's light must be relatively close to Earth, implying that any ETI activity must be within our solar system," Stanton wrote.
The study explored several potential causes for the pulses but left many questions unanswered. Alongside aliens, possible explanations left on the table included gravitational waves — ripples in the fabric of space-time — and the starlight diffracting off some unseen space object.
"More and better data are needed, such as could be gathered using arrays of telescopes on the ground," Stanton wrote. "Data from this new source, or information from other approaches, may be the only way to unravel this mystery."
