Young US men are joining Russian churches promising 'absurd levels of manliness' BBC Says 1/2

Lucy Ash

BBC News

"A lot of people ask me: 'Father Moses, how can I increase my manliness to absurd levels?'"

In a YouTube video, a priest is championing a form of virile, unapologetic masculinity.

Skinny jeans, crossing your legs, using an iron, shaping your eyebrows, and even eating soup are among the things he derides as too feminine.

There are other videos of Father Moses McPherson - a powerfully built father of five - weightlifting to the sound of heavy metal.

He was raised a Protestant and once worked as a roofer, but now serves as a priest in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) in Georgetown, Texas, an offshoot of the mother church in Moscow.

ROCOR, a global network with headquarters in New York, has recently been expanding across parts of the US - mainly as a result of people converting from other faiths.

In the last six months, Father Moses has prepared 75 new followers for baptism in his church of the Mother of God, just north of Austin.

"When my wife and I converted 20 years ago we used to call Orthodoxy the best-kept secret, because people just didn't know what it was," he says.

"But in the past year-and-a-half our congregation has tripled in size."

During the Sunday liturgy at Father Moses's church, I am struck by the number of men in their twenties and thirties praying and crossing themselves at the back of the nave, and how this religion - with traditions dating back to the 4th century AD - seems to attract young men uneasy with life in modern America.

Software engineer Theodore tells me he had a dream job and a wife he adored, but he felt empty inside, as if there was a hole in his heart. He believes society has been "very harsh" on men and is constantly telling them they are in the wrong. He complains that men are criticised for wanting to be the breadwinner and support a stay-at-home wife.

"We are told that's a very toxic relationship nowadays," Theodore says. "That's not how it should be."

Almost all the converts I meet have opted to home-school their offspring, partly because they believe women should prioritise their families rather than their careers.

Father John Whiteford, an archpriest in the ROCOR from Spring, north of Houston, says home-schooling ensures a religious education and is "a way of protecting your children", while avoiding any talk about "transgenderism, or the 57 genders of the month or whatever".

Compared to the millions of worshippers in America's evangelical megachurches, the numbers of Christian Orthodox are tiny - only about one percent of the population. That includes Eastern Orthodoxy, as practised across Russia, Ukraine, eastern Europe and Greece, and the Oriental Orthodox from the Middle East and Africa.

Founded by priests and clergy fleeing the Russian Revolution in 1917, ROCOR is seen by many as the most conservative Orthodox jurisdiction in the US. Yet this small religious community is a vocal one, and what's unfolding within it mirrors broader political shifts, especially following President Donald Trump's dramatic pivot toward Moscow.

The true increase in the number of converts is hard to quantify, but data from the Pew Research Centresuggests Orthodox Christians are 64% male, up from 46% in 2007.

A smaller study of 773 converts appears to back the trend. Most recent newcomers are men, and many say the pandemic pushed them to seek a new faith. That survey is from the Orthodox Church in America(OCA), which was established by Russian monks in Alaska in the late 18th Century and now has more than 700 parishes, missions, communities, monasteries, and institutions in the US, Canada and Mexico which identify as Russian Orthodox.

Professor Scott Kenworthy, who studies the history and thought of Eastern Orthodox Christianity - particularly in modern Russia - says his OCA parish in Cincinnati "is absolutely bursting at the seams".

He's attended the same church for 24 years and says congregation numbers remained steady until the Covid lockdown. Since then, there has been constant flow of new inquirers and people preparing to be baptised, known as catechumens.

"This is not just a phenomenon of my own parish, or a few places in Texas," Prof Kenworthy says, "it is definitely something broader."

The digital space is key in this wave of new converts. Father Moses has a big following online - when he shares a picture of a positive pregnancy test on his Instagram feed he gets 6,000 likes for announcing the arrival of his sixth child.

But there are dozens of other podcasts and videos presented by Orthodox clergy and an army of followers - mainly male.

Father Moses tells his congregation there are two ways of serving God - being a monk or a nun, or getting married. Those who take the second path should avoid contraception and have as many children as possible.

"Show me one saint in the history of the Church who ever blessed any kind of birth control," Father Moses says. As for masturbation - or what the church calls self-abuse - the priest condemns it as "pathetic and unmanly".

Father Moses says Orthodoxy is "not masculine, it is just normal", while "in the West everything has become very feminised". Some Protestant churches, he believes, mainly cater for women.

"I don't want to go to services that feel like a Taylor Swift concert," Father Moses says. "If you look at the language of the 'worship music', it's all emotion - that's not men."

Elissa Bjeletich Davis, a former Protestant who now belongs to the Greek Orthodox Church in Austin, is a Sunday school teacher and has her own podcast. She says many converts belong to "the anti-woke crowd" and sometimes have strange ideas about their new faith - especially those in the Russian Church.

"They see it as a military, rigid, disciplinary, masculine, authoritarian religion," Elissa says. "It's kind of funny. It's almost as if the old American Puritans and their craziness is resurfacing."

Buck Johnson has worked as a firefighter for 25 years and hosts the Counterflow podcast.

He says he was initially scared to enter his local Russian Orthodox Church as he "looks different, covered in tattoos", but tells me he was welcomed with open arms. He was also impressed the church stayed open throughout the Covid lockdown.

Sitting on a couch in front of two huge TV screens at his home in Lockhart, he says his newfound faith is changing his view of the world.

"Negative American views on Russia are what worry me,”Buck says. He tells me the mainstream, "legacy" media presents a distorted picture of the invasion of Ukraine.

"I think there's a holdover from the boomer generation here in America that lived through the Cold War," Buck says, "and I don't quite grasp why - but they say Russia's bad."

The head of the Russian Church in Moscow, Patriarch Kirill, has doggedly backed the invasion of Ukraine, calling it a Holy War, and expressing little compassion for its victims. When I ask Archpriest Father John Whiteford about Russia's top cleric, who many see as a warmonger, he assures me the Patriarch's words have been distorted.

Footage and photographs of Putin quoting Bible verses, holding candles during services in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and stripping down to his swim trunks to plunge into icy water at Epiphany, seem to have struck a chord. Some - in America and other countries - see Russia as the last bastion of true Christianity.

Nearly a decade ago, another Orthodox convert turned priest from Texas, Father Joseph Gleason, moved from America to Borisoglebskiy, a village four hours' drive north of Moscow, with his wife and eight children.

"Russia does not have homosexual marriage, it does not have civil unions, it is a place where you can home-school your kids and - of course - I love the thousand-year history of Orthodox Christianity here," he told a Russian video host.

This wispy-bearded Texan is in the vanguard of a movement urging conservatives to relocate to Russia. Last August, Putin introduced fast-track shared values visa for those fleeing Western liberalism.

Back in Texas, Buck tells me he and his fellow converts are turning their backs on instant gratification and American consumerism.

"We're thinking of things long term," Buck says, "like traditions, love for your family, love for you community, love for neighbours.

"I think that orthodoxy fits us well - and especially in Texas."

Kiev’s drone raids meant to derail peace process – Moscow

Russia’s commitment to peace dialogue remains unchanged despite Ukraine’s daily attacks on civilians and non-military infrastructure, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said

Ukraine is trying to derail direct peace talks by intensifying drone strikes against non-military targets in Russia, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday. It accused Ukraine’s “party of war” of conducting “terrorist attacks” against civilians in what it described as a political strategy to obstruct negotiations.

According to the Russian military,776 drones and 12 missiles were intercepted above the country’s territory between Tuesday and Friday morning, while 12 drones hit their targets. On Saturday morning, the Defense Ministry in Moscow reported that another 104 UAVs had been intercepted inside Russia overnight.

“The Kiev regime is relentless in its terror attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in numerous Russian regions, including Moscow,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

Over the course of just two days, one person was killed and 20 others – including four children – were injured in Ukrainian drone strikes. Four more civilians, including two children, were wounded when the city of Lgov in Kursk Region was hit by a US-supplied HIMARS multiple rocket launcher, according to the statement.

The strikes on non-military targets are “part of a strategy pursued by Ukraine’s party of war,” the ministry added.

“The latest barbaric terrorist attacks by the Kiev regime were carried out in an attempt to thwart direct Russia-Ukraine talks facilitated by the US administration [of President Donald Trump], which are aimed at settling the conflict definitively,” the Foreign Ministry stated.

The Russian military will respond appropriately to the intensified drone raids by Kiev, but “unlike the Ukrainian side, our targets will be strictly limited to military facilities and defense industry plants,” it said.

The Foreign Ministry concluded by stressing thatMoscow’s “fundamental commitment to a constructive search for a peaceful settlement through dialogue remains unchanged.”

Direct talks between Russia and Ukraine resumed in Istanbul earlier this month after a three-year pause, with both sides agreeing to present detailed proposals of their vision of a ceasefire, to carry out a record 1,000 for 1,000 prisoner swap, which started on Friday, and to continue negotiations.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that Moscow is at an “advanced stage” in preparing a memorandum outlining the principles and timeline for a peace settlement with Ukraine. Russia will be ready to present its draft peace proposal by the time the two sides complete their latest military and civilian POW swap, he said.

The timeframe for the next meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations has “not yet been determined,” Lavrov added.

Russia ranks among top five global arms exporters – Putin

The president has called for an expansion of the range of services in the industry

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised the country’s formidable position among global arms exporters. He emphasized that being ranked among the world’s top five sellers highlights the quality of Russian-made weapons.

“Russia continues to remain among the top five leaders in the global arms market and maintains its leading export positions in many areas,” Putin said on Friday during a meeting on military and technical cooperation.

The president stated that the order portfolio for Russian military products amounts to tens of billions of dollars, and he called for a further increase in the volume of exports.

Putin highlighted the need to improve cooperation with foreign partners by offering not only specific weapons and equipment but also a broader range of services, in order to boost Russian arms exports in a highly competitive environment.

He noted thatsuch services could include “technological cooperation and the joint development of advanced models, assistance in their repair and modernization, as well as the supply of spare parts and training of foreign professionals.”

In November, the CEO of Russia’s state-run arms agency Rosoboronexport, Aleksandr Mikheev, told Vedomosti newspaper thatthe nation’s export order portfolio remained at a record level of $55 billion in 2024.He noted that the agency signed contracts for the supply of more than 30 types of modern weapons and military equipment to foreign customers.

Earlier this month, the head of the Russian state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, said that Rosoboronexport had signed over 20 contracts worth a total of about $7 billion since the beginning of the current year.

In 2024, Russia ranked second in global arms sales, with exports accounting for 12.32% of the international market, according to data compiled by the Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade (CAWAT).The US dominated the sector (37.92%), and the other top sellers were France (6.90%), South Korea and Italy (5.10% each).

Trump claims Putin ‘has gone absolutely crazy for no reason’

The Russian leader’s helicopter was reportedly caught in a Ukrainian drone swarm earlier this week

US President Donald Trump has claimed that Moscow targeted Ukraine “for no reason whatsoever,” afterRussia launched a series of missile strikes against military targets in Kiev and other locations – following a week of constant Ukrainian drone raids involving hundreds of UAVs.

Ukraine significantly intensified its drone attacks inside Russia last week, with at least 764 drones intercepted over Russian territory between Tuesday and Friday, and hundreds more destroyed over the weekend. The helicopter carrying ==Russian President Vladimir Putin was reportedly caught in the “epicenter” of a massive drone raid while he was visiting the Kursk Region= on Tuesday.

In response, the Russian military conducted a major strike against a drone and missile production plant in Kiev on Saturday, followed by additional reported strikes on Ukrainian military facilities on Sunday.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Trump claimed Russia’s response was unwarranted and said he was “surprised” by what he is seeing.

“I’m not happy with what Putin’s doing,” he said. “We’re in the middle of talking and he’s shooting rockets into Kiev and other cities. I don’t like it at all… We’ll see what I’m going to do.”

“I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” Trump added in a post on Truth Social, claiming that “missiles and drones are being shot into cities in Ukraine for no reason whatsoever.”

Trump also criticized Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky, in an apparent reference to his remarks about Washington’s “silence” in response to the latest Russian attacks.

“Likewise, President Zelensky is doing his country no favors by talking the way he does.Everything out of his mouth causes problems. I don’t like it, and it better stop,” the US leader stated, reiterating that the Ukraine conflict is “not his war.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry suggested that the spike in UAV incursions was an attempt to derail the US-brokered peace talks between Moscow and Kiev, while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that “some European nations led by the UK, France, Germany, and the EU leadership,” who are supporting Kiev and want the conflict to continue, bear some responsibility for the drone raids.

Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine have completed a record prisoner exchange, agreed to during direct talks in Türkiye earlier this month. Lavrov stated earlier that the sides will exchange draft ceasefire proposals once the swap process is complete.

Europe will be ‘destroyed’ – Merkel (Can she get more evil? Yes)

The former German chancellor believes the EU won’t survive without open borders

Tighter national migration and border control policies could spell doom for the European Union, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned, following Berlin’s recent move to curb the influx of asylum seekers.

Merkel made the remarks at the ‘Southwestern Press Forum’ event in Neu-Ulm last week, where she appeared to present her memoir, Freedom.

“I do not believe we can decisively combat illegal migration at the German-Austrian or German-Polish border… I have always advocated European solutions,” Merkel said when asked about the latest measures adopted by Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s cabinet.

The new policies, introduced earlier this month by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, prohibit asylum applications at all German land borders – marking a sharp reversal of Merkel’s 2015 open-border stance. Exceptions are made for children, pregnant women, and other vulnerable individuals.

According to Merkel, the move threatens both freedom of movement within the EU and the integrity of the Schengen zone, which allows visa-free travel across most of the bloc. She insisted that any immigration and travel reforms should be agreed upon at the EU level.

“Otherwise, we could see Europe destroyed,”she warned.

Merkel’s open-door policy in 2015 was met with fierce political backlash, with critics branding it “disastrous” after more than a million migrants were allowed into Germany during the peak of the 2015–16 refugee crisis.

Germany remains the EU’s top destination for asylum seekers. In 2023, it received over 237,000 asylum applications – roughly a quarter of the bloc’s total, according to EU statistics.

Merz had pledged to tighten border controls during his campaign ahead of February’s snap elections, amid surging public support for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), known for its hardline anti-immigration stance.

The AfD ultimately secured second place with 20.8% of the national vote but was excluded from coalition talks and government formation by mainstream parties. Earlier this month, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency (BfV) officially designated the AfD a “confirmed extremist entity.” The classification was temporarily suspended following legal challenges and mounting public backlash, but senior officials – including members of the ruling coalition – have continued to seek legal grounds to pursue a formal ban on the party.

Earlier this week, German police warned that officers may only be able to enforce the new regulations for “a few more weeks” due to mounting pressure on personnel deployed at the borders. This comes despite the government deploying an additional 3,000 officers to support the 11,000 already stationed at key crossings.

Top Russian MP advises Telegram’s Durov to leave France

The tech entrepreneur risks further detention for resisting pressure from French spies, according to a Russian official

Telegram founder Pavel Durov should leave France as soon as possible following his claims that the country’s foreign intelligence agency, the DGSE, pressured him to censor conservative voices on his platform, Russian MP Aleksey Zhuravlev has said.

Earlier in May, Durov accused the DGSE of attempting to interfere in Romania’s elections by pushing for censorship on Telegram, which he allegedly refused. The spy agency denied the allegations, but the tech entrepreneur doubled down, accusing Paris of abusing “terror” and “child porn” investigations as a pretext to pursue a political agenda.

“I would advise him to leave France at the first opportunity – the risk of ending up behind bars again is too high, especially if he continues to resist the demands of the French intelligence services,” said Aleksey Zhuravlev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, in an interview with RIA Novosti on Saturday.

Durov, whose company is based in Dubai, was arrested in France in August 2024on charges of complicity in crimes allegedly committed by Telegram users, including extremism and child abuse. He was later released on €5 million ($5.46 million) bail. Although he was allowed to travel to the UAE in March, his recent request to visit the US was denied, and he remains under restricted supervision.

“[Durov] himself said that the DGSE, France’s external intelligence agency, demanded that Telegram organize a campaign against right-wing politicians in Romania,” Zhuravlev said, questioning the conditions of Durov’s release and noting that the tech entrepreneur is still restricted from international travel.

“It is more useful to always keep such an influential person in the field of new media within arm’s reach,” he added.

Zhuravlev argued that Durov has likely come to fully grasp the nature of “Western democracy,”where, he claimed, the law can be bent to suit political aims. However, he suggested that Durov remains unable to extricate himself from the situation, possibly due to compromising material being held against him.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also weighed in, accusing French President Emmanuel Macron of using “barbaric”methods to advance his foreign policy agenda.

“It turns out that [President Emmanuel] Macron had Durov arrested not even to address internal issues with the messenger, but to influence the elections in Romania– realizing that the candidate from the liberal dictatorship wouldn’t be able to win under any legal circumstances,”Zakharova wrote on Telegram on Saturday.

(This makes me wonder if he is being held hostage in France already.)
