In blow to Israel-backed Gaza aid effort, CEO of group tasked with managing it resigns

Future of Gaza Humanitarian Foundation uncertain after CEO Jake Wood says project doesnโ€™t abide by humanitarian principles; Trump suggests truce talks moving in right direction

The CEO of the new Israeli- and US-backed organization that was supposed to begin managing the distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza in the coming days has resigned.

โ€œI am proud of the work I oversaw, including developing a pragmatic plan that could feed hungry people, address security concerns about diversion, and complement the work of longstanding NGOs in Gaza,โ€ Gaza Humanitarian Foundation CEO Jake Wood said in a statement on Sunday.

โ€œHowever, it is clear that it is not possible to implement this plan while also strictly adhering to the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence, which I will not abandon,โ€ he added.

Trade talks with Japan have apparently broken down as well.

Scott Bessent said there are no further trade deals coming until at least July 2025, if at all.

Healthscope collapses: Private hospital operator goes into receivership

Private hospital operator in receivership

Healthscope said daily operations unaffected

Australia's second-largest hospital operator has gone into receivership with creditors owed $1.6billion.

Healthscope, which was bought by Canadian firm Brookfield for $5.7billion in 2019, has appointed receivers led by McGrathNicol partner Keith Crawford.

Commonwealth Bank and Westpac have agreed to help keep its 37 private hospitals across Australia open until a new owner is found.

Commonwealth Bank announced on Monday it would provide $100million while Westpac has agreed to continue to provide assistance to help receivers sell the business, offering some clarity to the provider's 19,000 employees.

Mr Crawford said the focus was to engage 'constructively with all key stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted operation of Healthscope hospitals'.

He said the intention was to transition all hospitals to new ownership, with no plans for closures or redundancies.

Healthscope said while the parent entity had entered receivership, the operational business, which runs the hospitals, has not.

Every hospital would operate as normal, chief executive Tino La Spina said.

He revealed the additional funding would ensure a stable path to sale.

'There is no interruption to the outstanding care we provide โ€ฆ the additional funding, while we do not anticipate it being required, provides additional support,' Mr Spina said.

'The receivers and management share the same goal of maintaining our market-leading standards of patient care and protecting the business, the hospitals and our amazing people.'

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation earlier said it had been working with members and stakeholders navigating the financial difficulties and uncertainty.

'For the nurses and midwives who care for patients in Healthscope every day, this is a very difficult and worrying time,' union official Phoebe Mansell said.

'The financial collapse of Healthscope is a stark and shocking reminder of the dangers of privatising essential healthcare services.'

The operator owns the Northern Beaches Hospital in Sydney, Hobart Private Hospital, Darwin Private Hospital and Knox Private Hospital in Melbourne.

In May 2024, then chief executive Greg Horan said even though the sector was 'facing considerable headwinds', providing the 'best care' remained a top priority.

Tucker Carlson's warning to Australia about high immigration: 'You're not encouraged to say anything about this'

US political commentator Tucker Carlson has accused Australians of 'stealing the future' of young Aussies by failing to clamp down on immigration.

In the recently resurfaced clip, the former Fox News host and right-wing pundit said the country's high migrant intake was pricing young Australians out of the housing market.

'No country can sustain that level of immigration without falling apart. Period. Especially not a country of 26 million,' he said.

'You're not encouraged to say anything about this or you're a bad person because you're offering a better life to people and how dare you not do that.

'What's never noted is that you are stealing the future of your children when you do that in a bunch of different ways. For one, the most obvious, your kids can't afford houses.'

Labor promised to ease immigration before the last election but in the year to March, 437,440 migrants came to Australia on a permanent and long-term basis.

This was significantly higher than Treasury's March Budget forecast of 335,000 for 2024-25, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics data casting doubt on Labor's promise to reduce it to 260,000 during the upcoming financial year.

Deputy director of the Institute of Public Affairs Daniel Wild said Australia had been inundated with unplanned mass migration which he sees as the 'number one driver' of short term housing unaffordability.

'We know about 80 per cent of Australia's population growth has come from migration as opposed to local net population growth so, clearly, it's the number one demand driver of housing,' he said.

'The best thing the government can do is dramatically reduce the intake of migration. It's a lever the government has available to it that it can change right now.'

Mr Wild said the government failed to approve sufficient housing for the net overseas arrivals he calculated reached 1.1million people over the previous term of government.

He said Australia has the highest share of non-native born people of any comparable nation - a situation he said had taken an obvious economic and cultural strain.

'I think most migrants come here and want to assimilate to Australian culture but there's also a sizeable minority who do not.

'I think we're much more divided than we ever have been, certainly since World War Two, as a nation and we have much less common cultural values.'

Economist Leith Van Onselen said high immigration, including a large number of students on bridging visas hoping to stay longer in Australia, had created longer-term political advantages for one side of politics.
