Earth's Core Holds a Vast Reservoir of Gold, And It's Leaking Toward The Surface
26 May 2025
Earth's core is rich with gold, and it's leaking out through the mantle and into the crust, new research has found.
A new study of isotopes found in the volcanic rock that oozed out from deep under the lithosphere has revealed precious metals in Earth's crust, including gold, initially leaked out of the core before beginning the long, long journey up to the surface, borne on convecting magma.
"When the first results came in, we realized that we had literally struck gold!" says geochemist Nils Messling of Göttingen University in Germany.
"Our data confirmed that material from the core, including gold and other precious metals, is leaking into the Earth's mantle above."
Although we can access gold in Earth's crust, the amount there is an estimated minuscule fraction of the total quantity that our planet possesses.
Like a dragon, Earth is hoarding most of its gold: research suggests more than 99 percent is in its metallic core – enough to cover all of Earth's land in gold 50 centimeters (20 inches) thick.
It makes sense: when still forming, the heavier elements sank down through the planet's mooshy interior and ended up sequestered in the differentiated core, a process known as the iron catastrophe.
Later, meteor bombardment delivered more gold and heavy metals to the crust.
Although we have good evidence that primordial helium and heavy iron isotopes are leaking from Earth's core, it's been unclear how much of the heavy metal we find on the surface is from the core and how much is from space.
There is, however, a way to investigate: isotopes of a precious heavy metal called ruthenium. Isotopes are variations of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
The isotopes of ruthenium in Earth's core are slightly different from surface ruthenium. That difference had been too small to really detect, but Messling and his colleagues developed new analysis techniques that allowed them to tease them out.
They used their new techniques to study ruthenium that was dug out of volcanic rock on the Hawaiian islands, and discovered a significantly higher amount of ruthenium-100 than can be found in the ambient mantle.
That's the isotope of ruthenium that originated in Earth's core.
This discovery suggests that all the siderophile elements – those that migrated to the core when the Earth was young and molten all the way through – are leaking out of the core.
That includes ruthenium, of course, but also elements such as palladium, rhodium, platinum – and gold.
It won't be emerging at a particularly high rate, nor can we just dig down 2,900 kilometers (1,800 miles) to get it. Rather, the finding tells us something new about our own planet, and perhaps other rocky planets, too.
"Our findings not only show that the Earth's core is not as isolated as previously assumed," says geochemist Matthias Willbold of Göttingen University.
"We can now also prove that huge volumes of superheated mantle material – several hundred quadrillion metric tons of rock – originate at the core-mantle boundary and rise to the Earth's surface to form ocean islands like Hawaii."

Connect to NASA Satellites, then run AI on its image data!
May 26, 2025
I got bit hard by the astronomy bug last year. So much so that on any clear night, I was usually programming my telescope(s) to get data from some target. However, it has been cloudy nearly every night for the last 2 months in New England.
Instead of going stir-crazy, I decided to take the plunge into radio astronomy, which can be done in cloudy weather, in the day or at night. Instead of jumping straight into the science though, I decided to dip my toe in.
I read recently that NASA weather satellites transmit their data unencrypted, so you can connect to and download imagery data directly from their satellites!
I also learned that there is one satellite (GOES-19) that is parked in geostationary orbit (22, 000 miles away!!!) at an elevation and azimuth that is viewable from my backyard.
In addition, GOES-19 is the latest NASA weather satellite, activated in April 2025, so it has the latest technology on it. I bought a kit on Amazon that includes the L-band antenna dish (1.7 GHz center frequency), a low-noise amplifier (LNA), a software defined radio (SDR), and RF SMA cable.
All I had to do was provide my Raspberry Pi 4 and an inexpensive tripod to mount the dish to. USRadioguy has a great tutorial on setting it up and getting the appropriate software installed (I used goestools), and I was able to start receiving satellite data pretty quickly (in about an hour).
Once I started collecting data and weatherized the sensitive electronics (the Raspberry Pi, the LNA, and the SDR), I could start collecting lots of data both day and night.
After 3 days, I had enough data to import into my favorite edge AI platform: Edge Impulse! My goal was to create an object detection model to identify rain clouds in my downloaded images, then animate the images into a gif and display that on a local webserver.
I could then be notified if rain clouds were approaching my house.
I imported about 100 images into the Edge Impulse tool, then went about labelling the data.Once the labelling was complete, I created an object detection impulse using FOMO 0.35 at a 320x320 pixel resolution.
I kept the impulse as RGB to better detect the rain clouds (which show up as blue, green, or red in data depending on intensity).
I pretty much kept the default parameters and had a strong F1 score of 97%. I then ran the test data and got strong results there as well.
With the model results looking promising, I deployed the model as a Linux AARCH64.eim file. Since I was already using the Raspberry Pi 4 to run the data collection and processing of the satellite imagery, I could also use it to run my model in a Python script.
Using the edge-impulse-linux Python library, I'm able to run object detection of each frame (image), then combine all those frames together into a gif animation.
I could then host the gif on an internal flask server, and run a cronjob to update the gif every 30 minutes. You can check out the code on github. The public project on Edge Impulse can be found here.
I find it super impressive that with a single board computer roughly the size of a deck of cards, you can run satellite data collection and processing software, along with an object detection model and a webserver. Truly amazing!
This project was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed setting up the antenna, and it was rewarding to start receiving imagery data from the satellite! I look forward to pulling in additional data that the satellite provides, such as EMWIN and Non-Cloud Moisture Imaging Products data.
I hope you enjoyed this project, and don't forget to look up!

NASA Is Shutting Down The International Space Station Sighting Website
May 26, 2025
Starting on June 12, 2025, the NASA Spot the Station website will no longer provide ISS sighting information, per a message recently sent out.
This means no information on sighting opportunities provided on the website, nor will users subscribed via the website receive email or text notifications.
Instead anyone interested in this kind of information will have to download the mobile app for iOS or Android.
Obviously this has people, like [Keith Cowing] over at Nasa Watch, rather disappointed, due to how the website has been this easy to use resource that anyone could access, even without access to a smart phone.
Although the assumption is often made that everyone has their own personal iOS or Android powered glass slab with them, one can think of communal settings where an internet café is the sole form of internet access.
There is also the consideration that for children a website like this would be much easier to access. They would now see this opportunity vanish.
With smart phone apps hardly a replacement for a website of this type, it’s easy to see how the app-ification of the WWW continues, at the cost of us users.

China signs deal with Russia to build a power plant on the moon — potentially leaving the US in the dust
May 25, 2025
Russia has signed a deal with China to build a nuclear power plant on the moon.
The Russian reactor will be used to power the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), jointly led by China and Russia, and should be completed by 2036, according to a memorandum of cooperation signed by the two nations.
The announcement comes just after NASA revealed a 2026 budget proposal that would axe the agency's plans for an orbital lunar base.
The construction of the Chinese-Russian reactor will likely be carried out autonomously "without the presence of humans," according to a 2024 interview with Yury Borisov, director general of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, on the Russian state-owned news site TASS. While details of how this can be achieved remain unclear, Borisov added that the technological steps are "almost ready."
"The station will conduct fundamental space research and test technology for long-term uncrewed operations of the ILRS, with the prospect of a human being's presence on the Moon," Roscosmos wrote in a May 8 announcement following the signing of the memorandum.
The new research station, a permanent, manned lunar base located on the moon's south pole, has so far attracted 17 countries to join the program — including Egypt, Pakistan, Venezuela, Thailand and South Africa.
Its groundwork will be laid by China's 2028 Chang'e-8 mission, which will be the nation's first time landing an astronaut on the lunar surface.
The roadmap for the ILRS was first unveiled in June 2021, with China and Russia announcing they would loft the pieces for a robotic moon base using five super heavy-lift rocket launches from 2030 to 2035.
Once these basic pieces are established, China plans additional launches that will extend the base further, connecting it to a space station orbiting the moon and two nodes located at the moon's equator and its far side, Wu Yanhua, the chief designer of China's deep exploration project, said at a 2024 media conference, according to state media outlet Xinhua.
This extended model, laying the foundations for manned landings on Mars, should be completed by 2050. It "will be powered by solar, radioisotope and nuclear generators," Wu said.
"It will also include lunar-Earth and high-speed lunar surface communication networks, as well as lunar vehicles like a hopper, an unmanned long-range vehicle, and pressurized and unpressurized manned rovers."
The memorandum comes at a time of growing ambition for China's space programs. The country has had a lunar presence since the 2013 landing of the Chang'e 3 mission, which placed a rover on the moon.
Subsequent missions landed more rovers on the moon and Mars, while collecting samples from the moon's near and far sides, and mapped out the lunar surface.
China's race to build a lunar outpost also has an American rival in the Artemis program, which has recently been beset by delays.
Artemis III, which will see NASA astronauts return to our nearest natural satellite for the first time in over 50 years, is expected to launch sometime in 2027.
Meanwhile, the future of NASA's own planned lunar space station, dubbed Gateway and initially slated for launch as soon as 2027, has been thrown into question with the release of the Trump administration's proposed 2026 budget.
The budget calls for canceling the Gateway mission, despite significant progress on building the station's modules.

Patrick Space Force Base to add buildings for STARCOM as field command moves from Colorado
May 26, 2025
A future pair of modular buildings for STARCOM personnel is slated for construction at Patrick Space Force Base in a grassy field west of The Tides Collocated Club, environmental permitting records show.
STARCOM — or Space Training and Readiness Command Headquarters — is in the midst of moving to Patrick from its former home at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs.
The field command's geographic shift from Colorado to Florida's Space Coast comes as President Donald Trump is lobbying in favor of the proposed $175 billion "Golden Dome" missile defense system, which would include space-based sensors and interceptors.
On May 20, Trump tapped Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein to lead the campaign.
Last month, Space Launch Delta 45 officials applied for St. Johns River Water Management District permitting to install two modular buildings measuring 22,898 square feet and 22,737 square feet for STARCOM, along with a 133-space parking lot and dry stormwater retention area.
This 4.2-acre footprint off West Tech Road lies within a previously developed and demolished area on base. SJRWMD officials issued a stormwater management system permit on May 8.
STARCOM is the Space Force's training hub for warfighting in space, including doctrine, tactics and techniques.
"The decision to host STARCOM HQ and Space Delta 10 at Patrick came after conducting a site survey to assess the base's ability to facilitate the mission and infrastructure capacity, while accounting for community support, environmental factors, and cost.
The Department of the Air Force also conducted an environmental impact analysis," a STARCOM spokesperson said in a statement to FLORIDA TODAY.
"Last year, Patrick welcomed its first cohort of STARCOM Guardians, who are currently on the ground, rapidly establishing an initial operating capability for later in 2025," the statement said.
"Over the coming years, STARCOM will steadily transition a force of more than 450 personnel as it completes its move.
These personnel consist of a mix of uniformed Guardians and Airmen, federal civilians, and contractors," the statement said.
STARCOM will use existing and temporary buildings in the Patrick area until the permanent facilities are constructed, the statement said.
Maj. Gen. Timothy Sejba, who commands STARCOM, delivered the keynote address during Florida Institute of Technology fall commencement ceremonies in December.

That loud boom last night? It was a SpaceX spacecraft returning to earth
May 25, 2025 7:14 AM
At around 10:44 p.m. last night, a SpaceX spacecraft returned to earth, splashing down off the coast of Oceanside and sending a loud boom that rang across Southern California — and the Interweb.
The private space company's Dragon capsule was carrying 6,700 pounds of equipment and cargo to earth from the International Space Station, according to NASA.
The capsule originally took off from the Kennedy Space Center on April 21.
Some of the cargo Dragon brought back include an equipment that exposed different materials to space to study the effects of exposure to ultraviolet radiation and other space elements.
The capsule also returned five books used in agency's Story Time from Space project — STEM-related children's books that crew members abroad the space station videotaped themselves reading.
They also recorded themselves conducting science experiments from the books.
The mission was SpaceX’s 32nd commercial resupply services mission for the agency, according to NASA.
Don't say you weren't warned
There was plenty of notice that the Dragon capsule was coming back down. NASA had announced the projected date and time of the splashdown a couple days ago.
SpaceX also took to X — the social media site formerly known as Twitter — about an hour before to tip off the Internet about the impending racket, saying "Dragon will also announce its arrival with a brief sonic boom prior to splashing down in the Pacific Ocean."
On its website, SpaceX says the Dragon capsule can carry up to 7 passengers, and it's the first private spacecraft to transport humans to the space station.
As for us earthlings, at least we now know the reason behind this one mystery boom.

‘That Sounds Like Horses***’ — Joe Rogan Reacts to Jimmy Carr’s Insane Story About Tom Cruise, Stanley Kubrick, and NASA
May 25, 2025 | 7:44 PM EDT
Joe Rogan has often discussed some rather polarizing theories and stories with his guests on his podcast.
He recently expounded upon a few stunning assertions made by a guest — including references to Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise, legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, and NASA.
Joe Rogan Responds to Jimmy Carr’s Story About Tom Cruise, Stanley Kubrick, and NASA
On episode #2326 of “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast a few days ago, Joe Rogan hosted fellow comedian Jimmy Carr.
They discussed several topics, including an insane story that Carr narrated regarding acting icon Tom Cruise, the late moviemaker Stanley Kubrick, and America’s NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).
Around the 1:52:15-minute mark of the podcast episode, Carr stated, “I got told this thing, and I asked Tom Cruise about it. This is a good story … So I met Tom Cruise at a friend’s wedding, and I had nothing to say to Tom Cruise.
So I said, ‘You made Eyes Wide Shut with Kubrick.’ And he went, ‘Yeah. I did.’ I said, ‘I heard he [Stanley Kubrick] shoots everything — he shot everything with NASA lenses.'”
In addition to the 1999 movie, “Eyes Wide Shut,” released after Kubrick’s passing, Carr suggested that he’d spoken to someone about Kubrick’s 1975 movie, “Barry Lyndon.”
He asserted that the latter movie was shot with candlelight frames and advanced NASA lenses.
He highlighted that they were the best lenses ever crafted by humans and were utilized by NASA to film America’s moon landing in 1969.
Carr later speculated about how Kubrick got his hands on the aforementioned NASA lenses.
Pointing out that the moon landings transpired during the U.S.A. vs. U.S.S.R. Cold War, and America’s filming of the landings was a huge win for the nation, he added, “So they rehearsed the sh** out of that.
Who did they rehearse it with? Well, the best director in the world. So, they brought in a young Stanley Kubrick, and he filmed the rehearsals.”
He continued, “So they had to rehearse everything before they went up there. So I’m not saying the moon landings didn’t happen. They definitely did happen.”
When asked who told him about Kubrick helping NASA rehearse their filming sequence ahead of the moon landings, Carr noted that he didn’t remember who he got that information from.
Rogan then expressed his disagreement with that story, saying, “That sounds like horsesh*t. How did he have the time?”
Carr responded by questioning how Kubrick supposedly procured the NASA lenses, further implying that he probably paid for those lenses.
Rogan chimed in by highlighting that Kubrick was a mathematical genius, and he’d likely maintained his contacts in the scientific community over the years and thereby acquired the high-tech lenses.
For his part, Rogan seemed to disapprove of the information Carr claimed to have received from a person. Nevertheless, the duo agreed that Kubrick was an incredible filmmaker.
They indicated that he had an extraordinary ability to captivate viewers with elements like his set design and more.

Russian strikes on Ukraine are retaliatory – Kremlin
26 May, 2025 09:47
Moscow is carrying out strikes on Ukrainian military-linked installations in response to Kiev’s attempts to launch drone raids on Russian civilian facilities, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
Ukraine significantly ramped up its strikes on Russia since a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump last week, which focused on attempting to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Kiev launched hundreds of drones between Tuesday and Friday alone.
On Monday, it said that more than 150 long-range Ukrainian drones had been downed in the span of just 24 hours.
In the wake of the escalation, Moscow announced a successful strike on a drone and missile production plant in Kiev as well as several other military targets.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Peskov confirmed that the latest Russian attacks on Ukraine should be interpreted as a response.
“We see the Ukrainians strike our social infrastructure facilities, civilian infrastructure. This is a retaliatory strike. And the strike is aimed at military facilities, on military targets,” he said.
Peskov also weighed in on comments made over the weekend by Trump, who claimed that Putin had “gone absolutely crazy” and that Moscow’s latest strikes are being carried out “for no reason whatsoever.”
The spokesman remarked that the start of the negotiation process – to which he said the US had contributed significantly – is a “very important moment which is fraught with emotional overload” on all sides.
He also stressed that Putin makes decisions “required for the security of our country,” while recalling that Ukraine had openly “threatened” foreign leaders earlier this month before their arrival in Moscow for the celebrations marking the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
Russia and Ukraine held talks in Istanbul earlier this month, which marked their first direct negotiations since 2022.
The two sides agreed to discuss a potential follow-up meeting and to hold a record prisoner exchange, which was concluded on Sunday.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Moscow is now working on a draft agreement to present to Kiev, which could pave the way for a sustainable conflict settlement.

Donbass offensive, border warfare and ballistic missile strikes: Last week in Russia-Ukraine conflict (VIDEOS)
26 May, 2025 12:53
The past week in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has seen intensive fighting along the front line, with active combat continuing across Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), as well as in the border area between Russia’s Kursk and Ukraine’s Sumy regions.
The Russian military has been actively conducting long-range installation and logistics strikes, taking out multiple Ukrainian high-value assets.
This week, Moscow’s forces made new gains in the north of the DPR, liberating Torskoye, a large village located near the border with the Lugansk People’s Republic and Ukraine’s Kharkov Region.
Torskoye had seen medium-intensity combat for months already and the front line in the area had largely been static prior to the latest development.
Donbass offensive continues
The Russian military has reported making new gains in southern Donbass, advancing on the flanks of Pokrovsk (also known as Krasnoarmeysk), the largest city remaining under Ukrainian control in the southwest of the DPR.
Over the week, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the liberation of the villages of Novoaleksandrovka, located to the southwest of the city, Mikhaylovka to the east, and Novaya Poltavka, located further to the northeast.
Over the week, Russian forces made rapid gains further to the east, in the area between Novaya Poltavka and the city of Toretsk (also known as Dzerzhinsk), liberating at least two other settlements and partially encircling the Ukrainian forces stationed in the area.
According to the Defense Ministry, the troops have seized control of Novoolenovka and Aleksandropol, as well as reportedly reached the outskirts of Romanovka.
This leaves the Ukrainian troops in the area confined to a large pocket spanning some 12 km from the village of Kalinovo in the south to Zarya in the north.
The neck of the pocket is roughly 8 km wide, stretching from the outskirts of Aleksondropol to Romanovka.
The Russian military has also made new advances further to the south of the DPR. On Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the liberation of Bogatyr, a large village located some 20 km to the west of the town of Kurakhovo and just southeast of the border between Russia’s DPR and Ukraine’s Dnepropetrovsk Region.
The heavily fortified settlement of some 1,400 buildings, connected by a vast network of trenches and underground tunnels, was seized from Kiev’s forces within a few days, the ministry said.
It also released a short video capturing parts of the battle for the village, as well as showing Russian flags being hoisted.
Russian forces have also reportedly reached the border between the DPR and Dnepropetrovsk Region.
A video circulating online shows troops waving the Russian flag next to a destroyed Ukrainian pickup truck that had crashed into a concertina wire obstacle placed at the border.
While it was not immediately known where exactly the Russian troops reached the defensive line, the advance was likely made in the area to the south of the recently liberated Novoaleksandrovka.
Border warfare
Over the week, combat has continued in the border area between Russia’s Kursk and Belgorod, and Ukraine’s Sumy Regions, with both sides making efforts to advance further.
The most active hostilities have been reported to the northwest and south of the Sudzha area in Kursk Region, which was invaded by Ukraine last August and fully liberated by Russian forces earlier this year.
On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Russian troops had seized control of the Ukrainian village of Maryino.
The settlement is located just across the border from the Belgorod Region villages of Popovka and Demidovka, which have been subjected to repeated and ultimately unsuccessful Ukrainian attacks over the past few weeks.
1/2
Ukrainian forces launched several new attacks on the Kursk Region village of Tetkino, which was the target of an unsuccessful incursion attempt in March 2024.
The settlement has endured repeated attacks lately as Ukraine has tried to regain a foothold in Kursk Region.
A new video circulating online purports to show the outcome of one of the latest attacks on Tetkino. The attack involved two US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), a Soviet-era IMR-2 engineering vehicle, tanks and multiple quad bikes carrying infantry.
One of the IFVs got stuck in a large crater, while another likely hit a landmine while trying to cross the reinforced border. All the vehicles involved in the attack suffered multiple FPV drone hits and ended up disabled or destroyed, the footage suggests.
The Russian military has continued to strike Ukrainian staging areas immediately across the border.
A video available online shows seven aerial bombs fitted with a Universal Correction and Guidance Module (UMPK) winged upgrade kit hitting Ukrainian positions in the villages of Ryzhevka and Atinskoye, located immediately across the border from Tetkino.
Rear strikes
The Russian military has continued its effort to find and destroy high-value assets in Ukraine’s near rear, targeting amassed troops, staging areas and logistics hubs with various medium-range weaponry, including ballistic missiles.
On Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had targeted a Ukrainian special forces training camp near the town of Shostka in Sumy Region.
The camp had various facilities, including a firing range and an obstacle course, and was packed with military vehicles, surveillance drone footage released by the ministry shows.
A Ukrainian detachment is seen approaching in formation a building, presumably a lecture hall, moments before the site is hit by an Iskander-M ballistic missile packing a high-explosive warhead.
According to the Russian military’s estimates, up to 70 servicemen, including some 20 instructors, were killed in the strike. An ammo stockpile was taken out, while up to ten military vehicles were destroyed or damaged.
A video captured by the surveillance drone circulating online shows the aftermath of the attack. The building that the Ukrainian unit was approaching partially collapsed, while other structures at the location sustained considerable damage. Multiple damaged trucks are seen at the site.
Another video released by the Russian Defense Ministry showcases FPV drone strikes on a Ukrainian position in Kharkov Region. According to the military, the position housed an UAV operator unit.
Russian drones, seemingly packed with incendiary munitions, scored direct hits on Ukrainian dugouts covered with camouflage netting, setting them on fire, footage shows.
A video circulating online, said to be taken in Ukraine’s Dnepropetrovsk Region, shows a Ukrainian anti-aircraft position coming under an Iskander-M ballistic missile strike.
The radar, likely a Ukrainian-made 79K6 Pelican station, was set up in the open, protected only by an earth rampart.
The ballistic missile used in the strike carried a cluster warhead, with numerous explosions seen at the location, footage shows.
While none of the sub-munitions scored a direct hit on the radar, the fragile system likely sustained considerable damage and was rendered inoperable, given that multiple bomblets exploded in its immediate vicinity.

Turkish Airlines Cancels Flights to Russia Amid Ukrainian Drone Strikes
May 26, 2025
Turkish Airlines suspended nearly two dozen flights between Russia and Turkey on Monday as Ukrainian drone strikes continued for a seventh consecutive day.
At least 13 flights between Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport and the Turkish cities of Istanbul, Antalya and Bodrum were canceled, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia said.
Five more flights between St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport and Istanbul and Antalya were also canceled, according to the business newspaper Kommersant.
Turkish Airlines provided hotel accommodations and reissued tickets for affected passengers, it added.
Russian aviation authorities on Monday temporarily restricted flights in and out of several cities, including Moscow, citing safety risks from ongoing drone attacks.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defense systems shot down at least four Ukrainian drones approaching the capital overnight.
Moscow airports have introduced 51 flight restrictions lasting a combined 65.5 hours over the past week, according to a tally by the business outlet RBC.
Turkish Airlines canceled dozens of Russia-bound flights on May 8 after two days of heavy drone attacks triggered widespread airspace closures, disrupting travel for thousands of passengers.

Ukrainian military reports heaviest Russian drone attacks to date
Mon, May 26, 2025 at 7:09 AM
Ukraine said on Monday that Russia had attacked the country with a record number of drones overnight.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Moscow deployed 355 drones and drone dummies as well as nine X-101 cruise missiles. An air raid alert covered the whole country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described it as "the largest number of drones against our cities and communities since the beginning of the full-scale war" over three years ago.
The "third consecutive night of combined Russian terror … Putin shows just how much he despises the world — the world that spends more effort on 'dialogue' with him than on real pressure," he wrote on X.
"The increase in Russian strikes should be met with increased sanctions," he added.
The military's figures cannot be verified in detail. All nine cruise missiles were shot down and 288 drones were destroyed, the air force said.
Two people were injured in the Zaporizhzhya region, according to the local military governor Ivan Fedorov.
According to the air force, Russian drones attacked the port city of Odessa from the Black Sea.
In the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, military governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Telegram that a series of powerful explosions were heard.
Authorities elsewhere confirmed damage had been caused in several other parts of the country. It was widely reported that one target was the Starokostiantyniv military airbase in western Ukraine.
The Russian Defence Ministry wrote on Telegram that it had shot down 128 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory by late Monday morning.
Operations at several airports in Russia were temporarily restricted for security reasons.
Moscow launched a massive attack on its neighbour over the weekend using drones, missiles and cruise missiles, killing more than a dozen people.

413 Drone Attacks On Rajasthan During Op Sindoor, All Neutralised: BSFIn an interaction with media at the BSF
May 26, 2025 22:03 pm IST
Jodhpur:
Pakistan carried out 413 drone attacks in Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Sri Ganganagar districts, but all of them were neutralised mid-air by India's air defence system, Border Security Force (BSF) Inspector General (Rajasthan Frontier) ML Garg said on Monday.
In an interaction with media at the BSF headquarters in Jodhpur, Mr Garg shared the force's achievements during Operation Sindoor at the Western Border.
He said Pakistan's army targeted sensitive locations in Rajasthan, including the Phalodi air base, but the forces responded with precise timing, exactly where and when required.
Mr Garg said the missiles and drones from Pakistan were not empty, but not a single one could touch the Indian soil or cause damage to any facility here, be it military or civilian.
"Before they could reach the ground, our anti-missile technology and air defence systems destroyed them mid-air," he said, adding that this was precisely why there was no damage on the Indian side.
Whatever fell on the ground was merely drone debris or empty missile shells, he said.
Although some houses suffered minor damages, such as wall collapse and structural harm, Mr Garg expressed satisfaction that not a single civilian casualty occurred on the Western Border.
"Prior preparation with modern resources prevented major loss," he said.
During the conflict, senior BSF officers were deployed in border areas to further strengthen the security arrangements and instill a sense of security among the border residents, he said.
Asked about the preparations across the border during Operation Sindoor, Mr Garg said Pakistan had deployed its army along its side of the border, but not a single Indian soldier stepped back an inch.

Ukrainian drones target Russian rocket plant in Tula for the third time this month
26/05/2025
Overnight on 26 May, a drone strike reportedly hit the NPO Splav facility in Tula, Russia, 340 km from Ukraine, marking the second such attack on the plant this month.
The factory produces rockets and Tornado-S multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), heavy “flamethrower” systems (TOS), and guided and unguided aviation rockets.
Ukrainian Telegram channels Supernova+ and Exilenova+ shared footage, published by local residents, showing the moment of the explosion, which took place last night.
A woman in the video says “It flies again,” referring to a drone, and then after the distant explosion add, “It’s at the plant.”
Referring to the Ukrainian open-source intelligence (OSINT) community Kyberboroshno, Militarnyi noted that the same workshop was previously struck on 7 April 2025.
Currently, the extent of the damage remains unknown.the extent of the damage remains unknown.
Using video and image analysis, Kyberboroshno geolocated the impact site to coordinates, stating that the explosion occurred on the premises of the same enterprise.
Meanwhile, Supernova+ published its geolocation analysis suggesting other target of the drone attack – the military storage base (military unit 21317) or the 1060th Central Material and Technical Supply Base (military unit 55443-16).
This assessment contradicts the eyewitness’s comment in the video, which indicates that the explosion occurred at the plant.
Russian news Telegram channel Astra stated that NASA satellites did not detect fires in the Splav area.
However, this report is irrelevant, because NASA FIRMS had already recorded thermal anomalies there in previous days, likely linked to industrial activity — making it impossible to single out fires caused by the drone strike amid numerous existing industrial hotspots.
Third attack on Splav this month
If confirmed, this may have been the third drone attack on NPO Splav in May 2025. T
he plant was previously hit on 7 May and again overnight on 22 May, when a functioning workshop caught fire. A substation also reportedly caught fire during that attack.

Report: US Marine Veteran Killed in Russian Drone Strike
Monday, 26 May 2025 10:53 AM EDT
A U.S. Marine veteran who volunteered to fight for Ukraine reportedly was killed in a Russian drone strike.
Jonathan Andrew Pebley, described as a "militant," was killed in a special military operation zone, according to a Russian post Monday on Telegram.
The Memorial Day post came on the same day President Donald Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin had "gone absolutely crazy" for continuing to fire missiles that are killing Ukrainian citizens.
"American mercenary Jonathan Andrew Pebley has been eliminated in the SVO zone," the translated post said.
"The former Marine, a participant in the American campaign in Iraq, was a machine gunner in the 'Delta Knights' unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
He joined the militants of the Kiev regime in 2024.
"In numerous interviews with Ukrainian media, Pebley said that the war in Iraq did not leave a mark on him and that 'shooting at civilians is still easy for him.'
The militant was eliminated by a strike from our FPV [First-Person View] drone."
At least 50 Americans have been killed, 40 of whom were former U.S. service members, since Russia began the unprovoked war by invading Ukraine in February 2022, Military.com reported in late March.

Rare CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND Alien Mask Up for Auction – And It’s Equal Parts Creepy and Cool
May 25, 2025
If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a piece of extraterrestrial cinema history, now’s your chance, just don’t expect it to phone home.
Propstore has launched a new auction featuring an incredible lineup of film memorabilia, and one item in particular is drawing attention: An original alien mask from Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
One of the eerily sweet “Gray” aliens that descended at Devil’s Tower in the film’s unforgettable final act.
This rare piece is part of Propstore’s sale of items from Planet Hollywood’s vast memorabilia collection.
The auction kicks off May 21 and runs through June 11, and the catalog is packed with movie treasures that also includes Gremlins puppets, Ghostbusters miniatures, and Spock ears from Star Trek.
But the Close Encounters alien, complete with “functional eye mechanisms,” is the standout.
According to Propstore’s listing, the production team crafted multiple alien masks during filming, including prototypes, static versions for wide shots, and mechanical masks capable of limited movement.
This particular piece is one of the mechanical versions used for close-ups, and it’s got a bit of engineering under the hood.
It comes from the collection of Roy Arbogast, the Oscar-nominated special mechanical effects artist and longtime Spielberg collaborator. The listing explains:
“It features a foam latex-backed slip latex skin dressed over a fiberglass underskull and painted gray-brown on the exterior.
The interior is inset with wide cast resin eyes painted with blue irises and black pupils. The eyes are designed to move from side-to-side via cables installed along the interior.”
Arbogast’s filmography is filled with classic films including Escape from New York, The Thing, They Live, and Return of the Jedi.
Some “sympathetic restoration” has been done over the years to keep it display-ready, though the listing makes it clear the piece is fragile and not meant for wearing.
So, maybe don’t go scaring the neighbors in your driveway. The starting bid is $2,500.

Ports Authority launches drone monitoring unit
Nay 26, 2025
The Puerto Rico Ports Authority Executive Director Norberto Negrón Díaz announced on Sunday the creation of the “Security Unit for Monitoring the Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in the Vicinity of Airport Facilities in Puerto Rico.”
“The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, has grown significantly in Puerto Rico in recent years,” Negrón said in a written statement.
“The operation of these systems is regulated by Part 107 (The Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Rule) of the 14th Code of Federal Regulations, which clearly establishes that drones cannot be flown in areas near airports, docks, military bases, and national parks.
The Unit we are creating will have primary responsibility for ensuring that none of these devices are flown in restricted areas.”
Negrón added that new federal regulations for drone operations will go into effect on July 1, including the mandatory use of the Remote ID system on all such autonomous platforms.
The objectives of the unit, in addition, are the implementation of an action plan for monitoring incidents related to the use of UVAs in perimeters close to docks and/or airports, coordination with concessionaires to implement a monitoring program for incidents related to the use of drones, development of guidance programs for users related to state and federal regulations, and the establishment of direct and continuous communication with the Small UVAs division of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
“Among the parameters currently in effect for the use of drones in Puerto Rico are registration with the FAA through the FAA Drone Zone application, which requires that no system weigh more than 55 pounds, that its operation must not exceed 400 feet in height, and that its use be limited to areas designated as Class G (uncontrolled airspace),” the official added.

HUR Drones Blow Up Russian Fuel Train in Zaporizhzhia - Another Train Explodes in Russia

HUR Drones Blow Up Russian Fuel Train in Zaporizhzhia - Another Train Explodes in Russia
Ukraine’s military intelligence says its drone operators struck a Russian military fuel train in occupied Zaporizhzhia, while another struck an explosive device in Russia’s Belgorod region.
Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) has reported a successful drone strike on a Russian military train carrying fuel in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region.
“Railway roar – HUR soldiers crushed the military train of the occupiers,” read the caption accompanying a video shared by the agency.
While Kyiv Post could not independently verify the time or location of the footage, the video appears to show drones striking the train before it erupts into flames.
According to HUR, the strike took place on May 24. Operators from its active operations units used strike UAVs to track and target the train while it was moving through the Verkhny Tokmak-Molochansk-Fedorivka secftion of railway.
“A targeted strike on an occupation logistics facility was carried out directly during movement,” the report said.
The agency claims that at least three fuel tanks were destroyed, disrupting Russian railway supply lines into the occupied Zaporizhzhia region and Crimea.
“The armed struggle aimed at hindering and paralyzing the military logistics of the Muscovites continues,” the HUR added.
Separately, on Sunday, May 25, a railway train in Russia’s Belgorod region set off an explosive device planted under the tracks.
“The incident occurred in Novooskolsky district,” Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote on Telegram.
“According to preliminary information, a train ran over an explosive device under the rails, causing an explosion. There were no casualties.”
Gladkov said the blast damaged the railway’s contact network and led to a temporary suspension of train traffic. The Russian Telegram channel SHOT reported that the explosion took place around 6 p.m. local time.
A power line support reportedly fell during the incident, further damaging the railway’s contact infrastructure. A picture taken at the site have been widely shared on social media.
As of the morning of May 26, Gladkov had not provided further updates. It remains unclear whether the explosion was the result of sabotage and Ukrainian officials have not commented on the incident.
In late April, Ukrainian forces struck a Russian armored train using kamikaze drones, according to a report by the 152nd Separate Chasseurs Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
The brigade shared a video of the operation with the caption: “We haven’t shot down a locomotive yet. But everything happens for the first time.”
Drone footage showed the device approaching a heavily armored train - outfitted with plating similar to Russia’s improvised “barn tanks” - before flying beneath the locomotive and detonating.
The brigade did not disclose the location of the strike or further operational details.
From the video, it appears Ukrainian forces used a Mavic drone with an infrared camera to identify the target, followed by a kamikaze drone to execute the strike.
A Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance officer, speaking to Kyiv Post on condition of anonymity, called the footage “truly unique,” and added the train was operating close to the front line.
“This is a kind of greeting from World War II,” he said. “Armored trains used to be used for cannon fire. But in today’s warfare, using a train like this is about as effective as using pack animals on the battlefield.”
Junior Sergeant Stanislav Bunyatov of the 24th Aidar Assault Battalion reacted to the strike, writing: “Have you seen an armored assault train in this war?
Then it’s time to look. The fa**ots used the railway to break through our defenses, but it didn’t work out - just a little bit.”
The Ukrainian military-themed Telegram channel “Gruz 200” also shared the footage, commenting: “We haven’t seen such a stupid move in a long time.
Without the ability to maneuver, the train was simply f***ed up by FPV drones.”

Experts studying 'alien mummies' in Peru make startling find 'that proves they're real'
Updated: 03:50 EDT, 26 May 2025
Scientists probing 'alien mummies' in Peru have shared new findings they claim prove the specimens are '100 percent real.'
Dozens of these mysterious, mummified bodies were discovered in the Nazca desert by journalist and ufologist Jaime Maussan, sparking years of investigation into their origins.
But outside scientists who claimed to analyze them found the specimens were simply dolls made with animal bones.
Now, the team has released a new analysis detailing how two of the mummies, known as Maria and Montserrat, may have died more than 1,200 years ago.
The report noted that both are female. Maria was estimated to be between 35 and 45 years old at death, while Montserrat was between 16 and 25.
Examinations of Maria revealed a deep cut and signs of a bite or bruise in the lower pelvis, along with several lacerations resembling claw marks.
CT scans of Montserrat indicated she likely died from a puncture wound to the chest, specifically between the fifth and sixth ribs.
'These are yet more pieces of clear and irrefutable evidence that these bodies are 100 percent genuine, real, and organic, having once been alive,' said Dr José Zalce, lead expert on the investigation, in a statement to DailyMail.com.
Dr Zalce, former director of the Mexican Navy Medical Department, said he has analyzed 21 of the unusual bodies, noting features such as fingerprints, bone wear, dental structures, muscular anatomy and internal organs.
The latest analysis offers new insight into the causes of death for these alleged mummies. However, the study has not yet been reviewed by independent experts.
Both specimens were found with elongated skulls, three fingers and toes and internal organs including a heart, liver and intestines.
CT scans of one specimen, known as Maria, who measures five feet six inches, revealed bite marks, fractures, blood clots in tissue, and signs of internal trauma.
1/2
Dr Zalce and his team identified a significant cut near the lower pelvis, along with what appeared to be bite marks or bruises and several small puncture wounds.
These injuries extended from the tailbone to the hip. The skin and subcutaneous fat had been removed, and two small tailbone vertebrae were broken.
The team also described a zigzag-shaped wound with a broken pattern, suggesting that Maria may have fallen from a cliff and hit rocks during the fall.
In the case of Montserrat, researchers hypothesized that the cause of death was a significant trauma sustained over an extended period.
Images showed multiple fractures, including breaks in the scapula and ribs.
They noted that she was likely upright at the time of death, with her back pressed against a hard surface.
According to the team, the absence of callus formation indicates that the injuries occurred either within a short timeframe or possibly after death.
The mystery over the mummies began in 2017 when Maussan and a team of self-proclaimed paranormal researchers said they found strange three-fingered 'mummified humanoids' with an elongated skull.
The body was found covered in white powder, which the team said was used to preserve the remains.
And five years later, the tiny beings were paraded through Mexico's Congress where Maussan argued his case and did so on two occasions.
During the second meeting, he brought in a string of doctors who all said the bodies were those of real, once-living organisms - some experts claimed to have studied five similar specimens over four years.
However, scientists outside this group have also studied two mummies and found different results.
Forensic archaeologist Flavio Estrada, who led the analysis, said the claims that the specimens coming from another world are 'totally false.'
'The conclusion is simple: they are dolls assembled with bones of animals from this planet, with modern synthetic glues, therefore they were not assembled during pre-Hispanic times,' he said in January 2024.
'They are not extraterrestrials; they are not aliens.' However, a former Colorado prosecutor and current defense attorney, who has examined one of the mummies, is also a true believer.
Joshua McDowell told DailyMail.com: 'The bodies studied by Estrada were not related to any specimen that we have studied.
'They were folk dolls made to look like [mummies] confiscated at the airport.'
