Community on alert after former police chief convicted of murder, rape escapes Arkansas prison

Hardin "was wearing a makeshift outfit designed to mimic law enforcement when he escaped the North Central Unit."

A search is underway after a former police department chief has escaped the Arkansas prison where he is serving a 30-year sentence for murder and rape charges.

The Arkansas Department of Corrections announced on Sunday that Grant Hardin had escaped from the North Central Unit. Hardin has been at the unit since 2017, serving out a 30-year sentence for a first-degree murder charge as well as a rape count.

The Department announced in an 11:30 pm update Sunday that Hardin "was wearing a makeshift outfit designed to mimic law enforcement when he escaped the North Central Unit. He was not wearing a Department of Corrections uniform, and all DOC-issued equipment has been accounted for."

"Officials continue to utilize a variety of means to track Hardin, as well as investigating the events that led up to his escape. Further updates will be provided as they become available. Again, Hardin remains at large, and anyone with information about his whereabouts should contact local law enforcement immediately," the Department of Corrections added.

Hardin was previously the police chief for the small town of Gateway, Arkansas, and in October 2017, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the shooting death case of 59-year-old James Appleton, per CBS News. Appleton had worked for the Gateway water department and had been speaking with his brother-in-law, then-Gateway Mayor Andrew Tillman, when he was shot in the head on February 23, 2017, an affidavit stated. Police discovered Appleton’s body inside a car near Garfield.

Per the New York Times, witnesses identified the shooter as Hardin, who pleaded guilty not long after his arrest. While in prison for the shooting, Hardin’s DNA was connected to an unsolved rape from 20 years prior.

Elementary school teacher Amy Harrison arrived at her Arkansas classroom to begin setting up for the week on November 9, 1997 and when she left the teachers’ bathroom, she was confronted by an armed man who raped her, an affidavit stated. While investigators were unable to identify a suspect at the time, they were able to obtain DNA evidence from her clothing. When Hardin was entered into the prison system, his DNA was found to be a match with that found at the scene. In 2018, he pleaded guilty to rape and kidnapping and was sentenced to an additional 50 years in prison.

Hegseth Restricts Press Access at Pentagon, Says Journalists Will Be Required to Sign Pledge

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has taken yet another step to curtail the work of the press inside the Pentagon by imposing harsh restrictions on where reporters can go without official escort in a memo released late Friday.

The new rules forbid reporters from going into the hallway where Hegseth's office is located "without an official approval and escort from the Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs" – a job held by top Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.

If reporters wish to visit the public affairs offices of any of the other services, "they are required to be formally escorted to and from those respective offices," the memo adds. The Pentagon will also require reporters to sign a document pledging to protect "sensitive information," likely setting up situations where unfavorable reporting involving documents could be used as pretense to strip journalists of access to the building.

The move is just the latest in a series of restrictions on press access inside the Defense Department that began with booting legacy press outlets from their workspaces inside the Pentagon and then escalated to closing the press briefing room to reporters.

While none of the actions outright prohibit the press from covering the largest federal agency, they are an escalating trend of ever increasing restrictions on how much access reporters can have to officials who run each of the military services and the Defense Department.

The memo on Friday couched the new restrictions as "updated security measures" that "are needed to reduce the opportunities for in-person inadvertent and unauthorized disclosures."

The memo also notes that "in coming weeks" Pentagon press corps members will be given new access badges with "a clearer 'PRESS' identifier." Hegseth underlined those words on the copy that was made public.

While the new change, and several of the recent firings of top officials from Hegseth's inner circle, have ostensibly been over leaks to the media, the secretary never fully addressed many of the lingering questions over his use of the commercial messaging app Signal.

In late March, it was revealed by The Atlantic that members of President Donald Trump's Cabinet including Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Vice President JD Vance, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were part of a group chat on the unsecured app in which they discussed upcoming strikes against Yemen's Houthi rebels.

That discussion of sensitive military operations information on a commercial app that could be hacked by America's adversaries became public because the group inadvertently added a journalist The Atlantic's editor-in-chief to the text chat.

In April, the Defense Department inspector general's office said it was reviewing Hegseth's use of the app to discuss sensitive details of planned U.S. airstrikes in Yemen.

Then, later in April, media reports revealed that he had a second chat on Signal where he shared those same strike details with his wife and brother. NBC reported that those details came from a secure communications channel used by U.S. Central Command.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon has become one of the least transparent agencies within the Trump administration, even as it ratchets down access to the press.

Shortly after taking the job, Sean Parnell posted a video in which he promised to offer weekly updates and "to be the most transparent DoD in American history for the warfighters and the American people."

However, Parnell has hosted only one press conference since taking the job, compared to the Trump White House and State Department, which have been providing regular public press briefings for months.

Parnell's deputy, Kingsley Wilson, has only held press briefings for children during the Pentagon's observance of "Take Your Child to Work Day."

Wilson has also not addressed her yearslong history of social media posts that featured extremist rhetoric ranging from antisemitic conspiracy theories to white nationalist talking points.

Parnell announced Friday that he was promoting Wilson to the job of press secretary for the Pentagon, saying that her "leadership has been integral to the DoD's success and we look forward to her continued service to President Trump!"

Fire Breaks Out At Oregon Data Center Reportedly Leased By X

According to local media outlet Oregon Live, a data center in Hillsboro, Oregon, leased by Elon Musk's X, caught fire on Thursday.

"Right about 10:20 this morning our crews got called to a fire involving a battery or batteries," Piseth Pich, a Hillsboro Fire & Rescue spokesperson, told the local outlet on Thursday.

Pich said, "When they arrived they found batteries inside a room inside what we understood to be a data center. The fire itself was contained to the battery set there and hadn't spread anywhere else in that room."

Oregon Live pointed out, "Public records indicate that Digital Realty operates a data center at that site. The social media company X operates a data center in an adjoining facility next door."

Tech blog Wired cited unnamed sources that said X leases space in the Digital Realty complex.

"The incident is under control, and the fire department has concluded its on-site response. All personnel were safely evacuated, with no reported injuries," Digital Realty wrote in a statement, adding, "We continue to monitor the situation, prioritizing the safety of our personnel, the integrity of the facility, and minimizing customer impact."

X did not confirm whether server operations were impacted, and Digital Realty declined to comment on whether X leases space at the facility.

One day later, on Friday, X suffered a brief outage. Then again on Saturday…

Brisbane Airport plunged into darkness as major blackout sparks lengthy flight delays

Airport experienced issues at two sub-stations

A major blackout has struck Brisbane Airport causing lengthy flight delays for passengers as clouds of thick fog settle on the city.

Travellers were left in the dark overnight and into the early hours of Tuesday as a thick fog covered the city.

The fog prompted the Bureau of Meteorology to issue a road visibility warning for motorists in the Brisbane area.

The warning was cancelled after the fog started to lift in most places by 7am.

However, the fog caused issues at two sub-stations which affected operations at Brisbane Airport's domestic terminal.

Travellers and staff experienced long delays due to issues at check-in, baggage sorting and when loading a number of the aircrafts.

A Brisbane Airport spokesman assured customers the issue was fixed and the power had been fully restored.

'However there will be some residual impacts for Qantas and Jetstar passengers,' The spokesman told the Herald Sun.

'There has also been heavy fog at the airport. Aircraft continued landing and taking off, however it decreased the speed of movement on the ground.

'That fog is now clearing. We thank the passengers for their patience this morning.'

Qantas cancelled five of their flights departing from Brisbane Airport on Tuesday morning.

Albanese ramps up Gaza rhetoric as Zionist narrative erodes

Anthony Albanese is finally outraged at Israel’s aid blockade, while the Zionist lobby is losing the argument in the NSW Parliament’s antisemitism inquiry.

Right-wing Zionist groups, claiming to represent all Australian Jews, have attempted to control the narrative around antisemitism. Last week’s parliamentary hearing into antisemitism in NSW suggests they might be losing control.

Last Monday’s hearing began with David Ossip of the NSW Board of Deputies claiming to speak on behalf of “the Jewish community more broadly”. When statements made by other members of the Jewish community revealed that claim to be false, Ossip reportedly declared that the inquiry was “‘hijacked’ by fringe Jewish groups.”

“Far right hate group”, the Australian Jewish Association (AJA), expressed similar concerns about “Jewish antisemitism”, which it attributes to “A tiny fringe group claiming Jewish heritage [that] parrots anti-Jewish rhetoric, [and is] rejected by the broader Jewish community”.

Sky News later chimed in, with one commentator on an all-non-Jewish panel claiming that those “fringe” Jewish speakers “don’t actually represent Jewish people.”

Would-be gatekeepers

Taveet Sinanian, a member of the anti-Zionist Jewish group, Tzedek Collective, told MWM, while anti-Zionist Jews have long copped antisemitic abuse from Zionists, the NSW inquiry showcased a newer phenomenon:

Zionist efforts to deny anti-Zionist Jews’ Jewishness itself.

The AJA’s contention that anti-Zionist activists were “claiming Jewish heritage” was a case in point. Asked by a committee member whether the AJA was “trying to pass doubt upon whether those groups really are Jewish”, AJA president, Robert Gregory, responded, “I wasn’t trying to cast doubt, but there has been well-documented examples where various people who’ve presented themselves as Jewish anti-Israel activists were then exposed as not actually having Jewish background.”

When the committee member followed up by suggesting that sounded like an attempt to cast doubt about other speakers’ Jewish heritage, Gregory responded, “We haven’t made that suggestion, but, as I just mentioned, it has been exposed in different cases internationally that that in fact is the case – that people were claiming Jewish identity and are not. I’ll just repeat: We didn’t, in our submission, make that point about any particular person, if that’s what you are implying.”

Attempts to deny someone’s Jewish heritage by equating heritage with political and ethical beliefs is “chillingly reminiscent of German race science from the 1930s”, said Sinanian, whose Jewish relatives were murdered by the Nazis at Sobibor extermination camp. It is “the height of antisemitism,” he said.
