Moscow was ‘forced’ to launch military operation against Kiev – Putin
26 May, 2025 22:48
Russia was left with no choice but to launch its military operation in Ukraine because of the continued persecution of the people of Donbass by Kiev following the 2014 Western-backed Euromaidan coup, President Vladimir Putin has said.
During a meeting with a group of businessmen in the Kremlin on Monday, Putin said Moscow could not ignore the plight of Russian-speakers in the neighboring country.
He reiterated Russia’s position that the conflict stems from the turbulent events in Kiev in early 2014, when initially peaceful protests spiraled into riots and clashes with police, which led to the ouster of the democratically elected president, Viktor Yanukovich.
The anti-Yanukovich forces included ultranationalist groups such as Right Sector and Svoboda.
“You need to understand that we weren’t the ones who orchestrated the coup in Ukraine,” Putin said.
“[The West] has always told us that there should be democracy and elections… but they carried out a coup – a bloody one, in fact – as if it were normal. They later went on to suppress the Donbass, killing people with helicopters and jets.”
“They practically forced us into doing what we’re doing today, and now they’re trying to blame us for it,” he said.
The coup in Kiev sparked counterprotests and more riots, including a deadly clash in Odessa in May 2014, where 48 people were killed.
The largely Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Lugansk rejected the Euromaidan coup and voted for independence from Ukraine.
The new government in Kiev responded by sending troops in the spring of 2014 and repeatedly shelling and bombing Donetsk and other Donbass cities.
Ukraine later refused to implement the UN-backed 2014-15 Minsk accords, which would have granted autonomy to Donetsk and Lugansk.
EU officials, including former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, acknowledged later that Kiev used the pause in the fighting to rebuild its army and economy.
Ukraine also adopted several laws since 2014 aimed at restricting the use of Russian in the public sphere.
Putin cited Ukraine’s failure to respect the Minsk accords and the attacks on the rights of Russian-speakers as “the root causes” of the conflict, describing Kiev’s actions as “genocide.”
He has since demanded that Ukraine drop its plans to join NATO in favor of becoming a permanently neutral state, and recognize Crimea and four other former Ukrainian regions as part of Russia.

Russia hits military targets in retaliation for Ukrainian ‘terrorist attacks’ – MOD
27 May, 2025 09:02
Russia will continue targeting military-related facilities in Ukraine in response to a drastic increase in Kiev’s drone raids deep into the country, which are aimed at civilian infrastructure, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has warned.
In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said that while Russia has successfully initiated direct talks with Ukraine, “the Kiev regime, supported by certain European countries, has taken a number of provocative steps aimed at disrupting the negotiation process.”
These actions include an increase in strikes using Western-made drones and missiles targeting civilian facilities in Russia, officials said, noting that over the past week alone, air defense systems have destroyed and intercepted more than 2,300 drones, with most of them flying outside the frontline areas.
Ukrainian strikes have also resulted in casualties among civilians, including women and children, the ministry said.
Russia has retaliated with high-precision missile and drone strikes aimed “exclusively at Ukraine’s military and defense industrial facilities,” the statement stressed.
The ministry also presented a lengthy list of the facilities that have been struck in Ukraine, including military bases, warehouses, airfields, radar stations, as well as drone assembly, gun powder, and explosives plants.
“The Russian military will continue to carry out massive and group strikes in response to any terrorist attacks and provocations of the Kiev regime.
The strikes will be carried out exclusively on military facilities and enterprises of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine,” the ministry added.
On May 16, Russia and Ukraine held their first direct talks since 2022 in Istanbul. The sides agreed on a record prisoner swap and discussed a follow-up meeting.
As part of the diplomatic process, Moscow said it is working on a memorandum for settling the conflict, which is to be handed over to Kiev once the multi-stage prisoner exchange is complete. The swap was finalized on Sunday.
According to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, the document will include Russia’s key terms for a potential ceasefire, conflict settlement, and a timeline for an eventual peace agreement.
She added that Moscow hopes Kiev is now drafting a similar document to be handed over to Russian officials.

SpaceX Starship's Ninth Flight Test
May 27, 2025
The ninth flight test of Starship is preparing to launch as soon as Tuesday, May 27. The launch window will open at 6:30 p.m. CT.
A live webcast of the flight test will begin about 30 minutes before liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. You can also watch the webcast on the X TV app.
As is the case with all developmental testing, the schedule is dynamic and likely to change, so be sure to check in here and stay tuned to our X account for updates.
After completing the investigation into the loss of Starship on its eighth flight test, several hardware changes have been made to increase reliability. You can read the full technical summary of the mishap investigation here.
The upcoming flight test marks the first launch of a flight-proven Super Heavy booster, which previously launched and returned on Starship’s seventh flight test.
In addition to the reuse milestone, Super Heavy will fly a variety of experiments aimed at generating data to improve performance and reliability on future boosters.
The Starship upper stage will repeat its suborbital trajectory and target objectives not reached on the previous two flight tests, including the first payload deployment from Starship and multiple reentry experiments geared towards returning the vehicle to the launch site for catch.
Super Heavy is designed to be fully and rapidly reusable, with future generations capable of multiple launches per day.
To achieve this first ever reflight, extensive inspections took place following the booster’s first launch to assess hardware health and identify where maintenance or replacement hardware was needed.
Known single-use components like ablative heat-shielding were replaced, but a large majority of the booster’s hardware will be flight-proven, including 29 of its 33 Raptor engines.
Lessons learned from the first booster refurbishment and subsequent performance in flight will enable faster turnarounds of future reflights as progress is made towards vehicles requiring no hands-on maintenance between launches.
The booster on this flight test is also attempting several flight experiments to gather real-world performance data on future flight profiles and off-nominal scenarios.
To maximize the safety of launch infrastructure at Starbase, the Super Heavy booster will attempt these experiments while on a trajectory to an offshore landing point in the Gulf of America and will not return to the launch site for catch.

Following stage separation, the booster will flip in a controlled direction before initiating its boostback burn.
This will be achieved by blocking several of the vents on the vehicle’s hotstage adapter, causing the thrust from Starship’s engines to push the booster in a known direction.
Previous booster flips went in a randomized direction based on a directional push from small differences in thrust from Starship’s upper stage engines at ignition.
Flipping in a known direction will require less propellant to be held in reserve, enabling the use of more propellant during ascent to enable additional payload mass to orbit.
After the conclusion of the boostback burn, the booster will attempt to fly at a higher angle of attack during its descent.
By increasing the amount of atmospheric drag on the vehicle, a higher angle of attack can result in a lower descent speed which in turn requires less propellant for the initial landing burn.
Getting real-world data on how the booster is able to control its flight at this higher angle of attack will contribute to improved performance on future vehicles, including the next generation of Super Heavy.
Finally, unique engine configurations will be demonstrated during the Super Heavy’s landing burn.
One of the three center engines used for the final phase of landing will be intentionally disabled to gather data on the ability for a backup engine from the middle ring to complete a landing burn.
The booster will then transition to only two center engines for the end of the landing burn, with shutdown occurring while still above the Gulf of America and the vehicle expected to make a hard splashdown.
The Starship upper stage will again target multiple in-space objectives, including the deployment of eight Starlink simulators, similar in size to next-generation Starlink satellites.
The Starlink simulators will be on the same suborbital trajectory as Starship and are expected to demise upon entry. A relight of a single Raptor engine while in space is also planned.
The flight test includes several experiments focused on enabling Starship’s upper stage to return to the launch site. A significant number of tiles have been removed from Starship to stress-test vulnerable areas across the vehicle during reentry.
Multiple metallic tile options, including one with active cooling, will test alternative materials for protecting Starship during reentry. On the sides of the vehicle, functional catch fittings are installed and will test the fittings’ thermal and structural performance.
The entire ship's tile line also received a smoothed and tapered edge to address hot spots observed during reentry on Starship’s sixth flight test.
Starship’s reentry profile is designed to intentionally stress the structural limits of the upper stage’s rear flaps while at the point of maximum entry dynamic pressure.
Developmental testing by definition is unpredictable. But by putting hardware in a flight environment as frequently as possible, we’re able to quickly learn and execute design changes as we seek to bring Starship online as a fully and rapidly reusable vehicle.

Drone-like objects spotted over India-Nepal border, security heightened
May 27, 2025 20:30 IST
Drone-like objects were spotted over the India-Nepal border in Bihar’s Madhubani district, following which an investigation was started, police said on Tuesday.
According to the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel posted at the Kamala border outpost (BOP) area in Jaynagar, some “mysterious drone-like illuminated objects” were sighted entering Indian airspace from Nepal on Monday night, Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar said.
“They immediately informed the Indian Air Force authorities in Darbhanga and Delhi. The district police were also informed. An investigation has been started,” he said.
“The glowing tiny objects were observed for about half an hour, and they finally went back to the Nepal side.
The district police are already on alert and maintaining strict vigil in coordination with other agencies,” he added.
Police stations along the India-Nepal border have been instructed to intensify patrolling, the SP said.
Bihar shares a long and porous border with Nepal, which has often been used by illegal immigrants from other countries to sneak into the Indian territory.
Security has already been heightened across the state due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit, starting May 29.

Oakland Sheriff Urges Congress for Local Drone Counterauthority Amid Rising Threats
May 27, 2025
On May 25, 2025, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard pressed U.S. lawmakers in Washington to grant state and local law enforcement the authority to counter hostile drones, highlighting growing safety risks at public events.
In an interview with The Detroit News, Bouchard, alongside U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Bruce Township), emphasized the urgency of addressing mysterious drone activities reported across New Jersey and other regions last year, which pose threats to airports, concerts, and football games.
A Call for Legislative Action
Sheriff Bouchard’s plea comes as drone-related incidents escalate, with current federal restrictions limiting local intervention.
The proposed Safeguarding the Homeland from the Threats Posed by Unmanned Aircraft Systems Act—supported by Sen. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township)—would empower the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Justice (DOJ), alongside local law enforcement, to disable threatening drones.
However, the bill has yet to pass Congress, stalling progress.
Bouchard stated, “Give us the authority to intervene that they have held only to federal agencies,” underscoring the need for local control during events like the NFL Draft in Detroit, where his team monitored airspace but lacked intervention powers.
Real-World Drone Threats
Bouchard highlighted specific incidents to illustrate the stakes. During the 2024 Dream Cruise in Michigan, which spans a 13-mile stretch and attracts 1.3 million people, his team recorded 96 illegal drone interventions.
He warned of catastrophic risks, noting, “Three of those went past my crude aircraft to 1,480 feet. Had that hit the cockpit of our helicopter, you’d have a catastrophic crash over the Dream Cruise into the crowd.”
He also referenced a Drone Incident at a Green Day concert at Comerica Park, where attendees panicked and rushed off the stage, though the drone was operated by a hobbyist, not a malicious actor.
The sheriff drew parallels to global threats, citing a thwarted ISIS drone attack at Warren’s TACOM facility and Mexican cartels using drones to attack a general’s convoy.
These examples underscore drones’ potential as weapons, especially as they become widely accessible.
“You can buy these things off the shelf and weaponize them very cheaply,” Bouchard noted, urging lawmakers to act swiftly.
Balancing Safety and Civil Liberties
Opponents of the legislation, as noted in The Detroit News, worry about First Amendment and civil liberties violations, fearing government overreach in drone surveillance.
Bouchard addressed these concerns, asserting that interventions would only occur when drones break laws or pose immediate threats.
“The drone would never be interfered with because you’re watching us. It would only be interfered with if it was breaking the law or was an immediate threat,” he clarified.
He emphasized that local law enforcement, already equipped with body and dash cameras, isn’t focused on surveillance but on safety, especially at high-risk events like University of Michigan and Spartan Stadium games.
Legislative Challenges and Next Steps
Rep. McClain acknowledged the bill’s slow progress, stating, “We’ve had a couple bills on it, but it gets stalled because they get hung up on one little thing.”
Despite bipartisan support from figures like Sen. Rand Paul, now chair of the Homeland Security Committee, the legislation faces hurdles.
Bouchard stressed the need for partnership, not just funding, saying, “Some of it, it’s not money. It’s partnership or authorization or integration of effort.”
With incidents like the attempted pre-op surveillance of a presidential candidate in Michigan—where a drone operator scouted a stage location for a potential attack—the urgency for local counter-drone authority continues to grow, pushing Congress to act before threats escalate further.

RAF pilots 'too scared' to speak out over UFO encounters
27 May 2025
Documentary filmmaker Mark Christopher Lee says he’s been contacted by several British military pilots who claim to have had real-life run-ins with mysterious unidentified aerial phenomena - or UAPs.
But despite the extraordinary nature of what they saw, they’re keeping their mouths shut.
Mark told the Daily Star newspaper: "We have military pilots who have had real-life encounters with UAPs. I have spoken to them. What they say is incredible."
However, these top guns are only prepared to spill the beans under strict anonymity.
The filmmaker said: "They fear the consequences if they were to go on the record. Will they be fired, ridiculed, demoted – even prosecuted – for speaking out? These are their fears."
Mark added that other military personnel and even police officers are scared to speak up about strange sightings in the skies.
He said: "What will happen to their families?
"It’s frustrating because unless someone goes on the record, puts their name – and potentially rank – to an event it is impossible to judge and difficult to properly investigate."
The filmmaker claims that the British public is being "kept in the dark" about UFOs.
Mark said: "Information about extraordinary events is being withheld from them."
The RAF has yet to comment on the claims.

Man who recorded ‘best ever UFO footage’ answered question about video being fake
17:41 26 May 2025 GMT+1
A man who recorded the 'best ever UFO footage' has explained why he doesn't think what he saw was fake.
There are plenty of people who are convinced they've seen a UFO hurtling through the sky, and some even manage to get video evidence of their sightings.
Some of the claims people make aren't hard to debunk, others take a lot more explaining.
One of the clearest pieces of footage of a sighting was taken by someone who was up in that very sky themselves and became convinced they'd had a close encounter of the third kind.
The footage was dubbed 'one of the greatest UAP (UFO) evidences of all time' by ufologist Jaime Maussan, who has been caught with fake aliens in the past.
However, truth is in the eye of the beholder so you might as well give it a look and learn why the person who filmed it thinks it's genuine.
The video was taken by pilot Jorge A. Arteaga, who was flying in the skies above Antioquia, Colombia, when he spotted something peculiar moving through the sky.
Within just a few seconds, a strange square-like object can be seen flying past Arteaga's plane and goes whizzing off in another direction.
The bloke claimed that he and his co-pilot had seen the object hovering in the air between the cities of Medellín and Santa Fe before it suddenly gained speed and moved towards them.
Arteaga claimed that the pair had wanted to keep following this strange sight before it suddenly started heading right for them.
However, Arteaga was able to get some footage on his phone which he's claimed as proof that he had a bona fide daylight encounter with a UFO.
Why is Arteaga sure it's a UFO?
This is the big question that anyone is going to ask when someone says they've caught a UFO on camera.
There are all sorts of objects in the sky which might just be a balloon or a scrap of something else floating about in the wind.
However, the pilot said that since his plane was at 12,500 feet there's no chance it could just have been a balloon.
Arteaga claimed it would be too cold and turbulent at that height for something like a balloon to survive in the skies, so he reckons it must have been a UFO.
On top of that, the pilot claimed the thing he saw was 'something totally unknown without means of propulsion' and he thought it moved in an 'intelligent' manner.
You may believe what you like, but the man who saw and filmed it is pretty convinced he laid eyes on a UFO that day.
