How A 'Deviant' Philosopher Built Palantir, A CIA-Funded Data-Mining Juggernaut
Since rumors began to spread that a startup called Palantir helped to kill Osama bin Laden, Alex Karp hasn't had much time to himself.
On one sun-baked July morning in Silicon Valley Palantir's lean 45-year-old chief executive, with a top-heavy mop of frazzled hair, hikes the grassy hills around Stanford University's massive satellite antennae known as the Dish, a favorite meditative pastime. But his solitude is disturbed somewhat by "Mike," an ex-Marinesilent, 6 foot 1, 270 pounds of mostly pectoral musclewho trails him everywhere he goes. Even on the suburban streets of Palo Alto, steps from Palantir's headquarters, the bodyguard lingers a few feet behind.
"It puts a massive cramp on your life," Karp complains, his expression hidden behind large black sunglasses. "There's nothing worse for reducing your ability to flirt with someone."
Karp's 24/7 security detail is meant to protect him from extremists who have sent him death threats and conspiracy theorists who have called Palantir to rant about the Illuminati. Schizophrenics have stalked Karp outside his office for days at a stretch. "It's easy to be the focal point of fantasies," he says, "if your company is involved in realities like ours."
Palantir lives the realities of its customers: the NSA, the FBI and the CIAan early investor through its In-Q-Tel venture fundalong with an alphabet soup of other U.S. counterterrorism and military agencies. In the last five years Palantir has become the go-to company for mining massive data sets for intelligence and law enforcement applications, with a slick software interface and coders who parachute into clients' headquarters to customize its programs. Palantir turns messy swamps of information into intuitively visualized maps, histograms and link charts. Give its so-called "forward-deployed engineers" a few days to crawl, tag and integrate every scrap of a customer's data, and Palantir can elucidate problems as disparate as terrorism, disaster response and human trafficking.
Palantir's advisors include Condoleezza Rice and former CIA director George Tenet, who says in an interview that "I wish we had a tool of its power" before 9/11. General David Petraeus, the most recent former CIA chief, describes Palantir to FORBES as "a better mousetrap when a better mousetrap was needed" and calls Karp "sheer brilliant."
Among those using Palantir to connect the dots are the Marines, who have deployed its tools in Afghanistan for forensic analysis of roadside bombs and predicting insurgent attacks. The software helped locate Mexican drug cartel members who murdered an American customs agent and tracked down hackers who installed spyware on the computer of the Dalai Lama. In the book The Finish, detailing the killing of Osama bin Laden, author Mark Bowden writes that Palantir's software "actually deserves the popular designation Killer App."
And now Palantir is emerging from the shadow world of spies and special ops to take corporate America by storm. The same tools that can predict ambushes in Iraq are helping pharmaceutical firms analyze drug data. According to a former JPMorgan Chase staffer, they've saved the firm hundreds of millions of dollars by addressing issues from cyberfraud to distressed mortgages. A Palantir user at a bank can, in seconds, see connections between a Nigerian Internet protocol address, a proxy server somewhere within the U.S. and payments flowing out from a hijacked home equity line of credit, just as military customers piece together fingerprints on artillery shell fragments, location data, anonymous tips and social media to track down Afghani bombmakers.

Erik Prince Involved In Deadly Drone Attacks In Haiti
The US-installed government in Haiti has turned to American mercenaries, including Blackwater founder Erik Prince, to fight against armed groups that now control nearly all of Port-au-Prince. Drones operated by Prince’s firm have killed hundreds, but no high-value targets.
According to the New York Times, Prince’s company has been operating drones in Haiti since March in an operation aimed at killing gang members. The Times notes the Haitian government has not announced any successful operations linked to the program.
Pierre Esperance, who leads the National Human Rights Defense Network, told the Wall Street Journal that more than 300 people have been killed in drone strikes over the last three months.
Additionally, Prince is ramping up for a larger operation that would see 150 mercenaries sent to Haiti this summer, and has already shipped the arms to the nation.
While now called Constellis Holdings, Prince’s defense contracting firm was initially named Blackwater. The company became infamous in 2007 when some of its mercenaries opened fire on civilians in Iraq, killing 17.
Prince is a long-time ally of the US president, and the mercs responsible for murdering the Iraqi civilians were ultimately pardoned by Trump during his first term.
Details of the agreement between Prince and the Haitian government are unknown. While the State Department denied that it is currently paying Prince, the US continues to fund Haitian police forces and Kenyan soldiers deployed to the country to help the government reclaim control of the capital city.
The current government in Port-au-Prince was installed by Washington last year after the collapse of the Ariel Henry administration. Henry was forced from power after he left Port-au-Prince to sign an agreement with the Kenyan government that allowed Nairobi to deploy its troops to Haiti.
Henry was Washington’s choice to lead in Port-au-Prince after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. Under Henry’s rule, gangs and armed groups increasingly took control over Port-au-Prince, leading the Biden administration to back the Kenyan deployment to restore order.
However, the presence of Kenyan forces has not changed the tide in Port-au-Prince, as the gangs have only grown stronger over the past year. Last month, Human Rights Watch reported that the Haitian government only controlled 10% of the capital.

Ukraine is already asking for more money to continue fighting into 2026, a sure sign that President Volodmyr Zelensky has no plans to end the war.
With the battlefield continuing to favor Russia, European leaders have their collective heads in the sand on who will pay. How long before President Trump walks away?
At the G7 Finance and Central Bank governors’ meeting in Banff on May 21, Ukraine’s Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko sought financial support for 2026, “including the provision of support to the Ukrainian army through its integration into the European security system,” according to reports.
I have said before that Ukraine cannot keep fighting into 2026 without a significant injection of European money. Even if the war were to stop tomorrow, Ukraine would still face a huge funding black hole. And that prolonging the war simply extends Ukraine’s indebtedness and delinquency, nudging it every closer towards the status of a failed state.
Making light of the price tag, German-based Kiel Institute has suggested extra EU support to Ukraine’s army would only need to cost an extra 0.2% of GDP or $43.3 billion per year. This assumes no additional U.S. funding under President Trump and is a figure practically identical to the $41.5 billion figure I forecast two months ago.
The Ukrainian side pointed out two assumptions that underpin their request — first, that funding Ukraine’s military supports macro-financial stability in that country. That is untrue. By far the leading cause of the increased financial distress of Ukraine is its vast and unsustainable prosecution of a war that it cannot win. As I have said before, ending the war would allow for immediate reductions to be made to military spending, which accounts for 65% of total government expenditure.
Second, that paying for Ukraine’s military is keeping Europe safer. It isn’t. The best route to European security would be to end the war tomorrow. The risk of escalation only grows for the longer the war continues and President Zelensky resorts to increasingly desperate tactics as the battlefield realities turn against him.
This latest request for money is a clear signal that Zelensky is not serious about U.S. demands for peace, and would prefer to continue the fight, drawing directly upon European funds. It has long been clear to me that Zelensky is evading peace because it would bring his presidency to a close, not to mention elevate risks to his personal safety.
He has therefore been piling on more pressure for Western leaders to impose more sanctions and other measures, which will only serve to prolong the war. Senator Lindsey Graham’s recent brain wave that the U.S. impose 500% secondary tariffs on countries that trade with Russia is a classic example. No doubt other countries, China in particular, would respond negatively to this, as it has already to the launch of Trump’s tariff war. It would kill President Trump’s efforts at engagement with Russia, by boxing him in to Beltway demands in an identical rerun of his first presidency, making him appear toothless in the eyes of Putin.
But these are not the real points. Having suffered over 20,000 sanctions already since 2014 yet maintaining a stable, growing economy, what makes people believe that Russia will back down to even more sanctions now?

IDF strikes missile depots in Syria’s Latakia region in rare coastal attack
Military confirms fighter jets hit coastal missiles and surface-to-air missile components near Lattakia and Tartus
The IDF quickly confirmed that its fighter jets struck targets in the Latakia area, identifying them as weapon storage facilities containing coastal missiles.
According to the military, the missiles posed a threat to both international and Israeli maritime freedom of navigation. The IDF also said it struck components of surface-to-air missiles in the same area.
“A short while ago, the IDF struck weapon storage facilities containing coastal missiles that posed a threat to international and Israeli maritime freedom of navigation, in the Lattakia area of Syria,” the military said in a statement.
“In addition, components of surface-to-air missiles were struck in the area of Lattakia. The IDF will continue to operate to maintain freedom of action in the region, in order to carry out its missions and remove any threat to the State of Israel and its citizens.”
According to Syrian reports, a fire broke out in the Tartus area during the strikes. Lebanon's Al-Mayadeen network, affiliated with Hezbollah, reported that Israeli warplanes struck near the city of Jableh in northwestern Syria—specifically targeting the Syrian army's 107th Brigade, which was affiliated with the Assad regime before it was toppled last year.
