Germany’s Threats to Hungary and Slovakia Expose the EU’s Globalist Authoritarian Drift, Say Fico and Orbán
by Robert Semonsen May. 28, 2025
In a striking turn of events that lays bare the deepening rift within the European Union, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued open threats against Hungary and Slovakia, warning that Berlin and Brussels may cut off vital EU funding if the two nations continue charting their own path on Russia and Ukraine.
But the governments of Budapest and Bratislava are pushing back—and hard.
The Merz regime’s thinly veiled blackmail came during remarks at the WDR Europaforum, where he declared, “We will not be able to avoid a conflict with Hungary and Slovakia if we continue on this course.” According to Merz, the EU cannot let “a small minority”—read: sovereign states with independent foreign policies—“dictate” the bloc’s direction. His not-so-subtle message? Fall in line with the EU’s failing Ukraine policies, or face financial punishment.
Merz added, “Member states that violate the rule of law can face infringement procedures, and there is always the possibility of withdrawing European funds. If necessary, we will take care of it.” Translation: do as Brussels says or else.
The real crime, however, is in the eyes of the EU elite. Hungary and Slovakia refuse to buy into the fantasy that the endless flow of weapons to Kyiv will somehow bring peace. Instead, both nations have called for diplomacy and a negotiated settlement—a position much more in line with US President Donald Trump’s America First vision than with the war-hungry dogma of globalist-infested Brussels and Berlin.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary has long sounded the alarm about the EU’s economic suicide through sanctions. Hungary, which continues to purchase Russian gas and nuclear fuel, has rightly pointed out that these sanctions hurt European families far more than they hurt the Kremlin. In March, Budapest blocked a joint EU declaration on Ukraine’s EU membership and vowed to veto any moves to eliminate Russian energy imports.
Slovakia, meanwhile, has returned to common sense under Prime Minister Robert Fico. Since regaining power in 2023, Fico has halted weapons shipments to Ukraine, refused to be dragged into NATO’s escalation games, and has begun repairing his nation’s energy relationship with Moscow. He’s even dared to say aloud what few in Brussels will admit: “Europe needs Russia, and Russia needs Europe.”
Unsurprisingly, the EU globalists can’t stand this.
Fico, never one to mince words, blasted Merz’s threats as “absolutely unacceptable in modern Europe.” Speaking during a visit to Armenia, the Slovak leader said, “Slovakia is not a little schoolchild that needs to be lectured. The politics of a single mandatory opinion is the end of democracy.” He added that such an authoritarian mindset is “not the path toward cohesion and cooperation,” warning that “if we don’t respect democratic standards and national sovereignty, this could lead Europe to World War III.”
Indeed, the situation is growing more Orwellian by the day. While Merz warns Hungary and Slovakia of funding cuts over their ‘pro-Russian’ positions, it’s his own government that’s overseeing skyrocketing energy prices, growing dependence on coal, and economic stagnation—all thanks to Berlin’s self-imposed rejection of Russian energy and the obsession with ideological climate policy.
The truth is becoming impossible to hide: the EU, led by Germany, is no longer a club of sovereign nations cooperating for mutual benefit. It has morphed into an empire of compliance, where disobedience to Brussels’ ideological line is met with threats, blackmail, and financial warfare.
Fico and Orbán are not the problem—they are the last defenders of democracy, sovereignty, and sanity in a Europe rapidly spiraling into technocratic tyranny.

Germany Vows To 'Do Everything' To Prevent Nord Stream Resurrection
Authored by Charles Kennedy via OilPrice.com Thursday, May 29, 2025
German Chancellor Merz: Germany plans to do all it takes to keep the Nord Stream 2 pipeline offline.
Nord Stream 2, an $11-billion project to carry Russian natural gas from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea following the Nord Stream route, was built at the end of the 2010s.
Earlier this month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that sanctions on Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines could be part of the new EU sanctions package against Russia.
Germany plans to do all it takes to keep the Nord Stream 2 pipeline offline, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Wednesday at a news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin.
“We will do everything in this context to ensure that Nord Stream 2 cannot be put back into operation,” Merz said, as quoted by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Germany will continue to increase the pressure on Russia, the chancellor added.
Nord Stream 2, an $11-billion project to carry Russian natural gas from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea following the Nord Stream route, was built at the end of the 2010s. However, the pipeline was never put into operation after Germany axed the certification process in early 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Russia, for its part, shut down Nord Stream 1 indefinitely in early September of 2022, claiming an inability to repair gas turbines because of the Western sanctions.
In a suspected sabotage, gas leaks in each of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea were discovered at the end of September 2022.
Debates on the pipelines continue despite the fact that they haven’t shipped any gas to Germany for more than two and a half years.
Speculation has intensified in recent weeks that a revival of the pipelines could be a part of a deal for the end of the war in Ukraine.
Earlier this month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that sanctions on Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines could be part of the new EU sanctions package against Russia.
The EU has started talks and is already working on the 18th package of sanctions, which could include, for example, sanctions on Nord Stream 1 and 2, listing more vessels of the Russian shadow fleet, and lowering the oil price cap on Russia’s crude, von der Leyen added.

Merkel's Back, Warns Europe Could Be 'Destroyed' Without More Open-Borders
by Tyler Durden Thursday, May 29, 2025
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel is back with a message; Europe could be 'destroyed' unless they continue to allow millions of 'non-Europeans' to flood the bloc.
Criticizing Chancellor Friedrich Merz's migration policy, Merkel told Southwestern Press Forum in Neu-Ulm last week that efforts to secure borders could have catastrophic consequences.
"I do not believe we can decisively combat illegal migration at the German-Austrian or German-Polish border… I have always advocated European solutions," she said when asked about Merz's latest measures adopted by his cabinet - which include a prohibition on asylum applications at all German land borders, with exceptions for pregnant woman, children and other vulnerable individuals - a sharp reversal from Merkel's 2015 open-border policy.
"Otherwise, we could see Europe destroyed," she continued.
Critics have called Merkel's open-border policy "disastrous" after over a million migrants flooded into Germany during the peak of the 2015-2016 refugee crisis, while Germany continues to be the top destination for asylum seekers - 'welcoming' over 237,000 applicants in 2023, roughly 25% of the bloc's total, according to EU stats.
Merz promised to crack down on migration his 'first day' in office in the run-up to Germany's snap election on Feb. 23. Less than 24 hours after being sworn in, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced sweeping border controls that would prohibit migrants from entering Germany, including those seeking asylum.
Merkel's criticism of Merz is her second this year - as she previously slammed his decision to rely on 'far-right' politicians to help pass an anti-immigration motion in parliament.
