Transgender track athlete wins gold in California state championships despite Trump threat

Overcoming intense pressure to quit from President Trump, dozens of local protesters and other prominent critics of transgender athletes in girls' sports, 16-year-old AB Hernandez bounded past many of her peers to win multiple gold medals at California's high school track and field championships Saturday.

The transgender junior from Jurupa Valley High School — who competed despite a directive from Trump that she be barred from doing so — won state titles in the girls' triple jump and the girl's high jump and took second place in the girls' long jump.

Hernandez's success at the 2025 CIF State Track and Field Championships in Clovis came amid high heat — with temperatures above 100 degrees for much of the day — and under an intense spotlight.

Earlier in the week, Trump had said on social media that he was "ordering local authorities, if necessary, to not allow" Hernandez to compete, wrongly alleging she had won "everything" in a prior meet and calling her "practically unbeatable." Protesters gathered outside the meet both Friday and Saturday to denounce her inclusion and the LGBTQ+-friendly state laws allowing it.

Despite all that, Hernandez appeared calm and focused as she competed. When her name was announced for the long jump, she waved to the crowd. When she was announced for the high jump, she smiled.

Hernandez beat out all other competitors in the triple jump, though the runner-up was also awarded 1st place under new rules established by the California Interscholastic Federation after Trump issued his threats.

Hernandez tied with two other girls in the high jump, with the three of them all clearing the same height and sharing the gold.

Hernandez's mother, Nereyda Hernandez, heaped praise on her after the events in a statement provided to The Times, saying, "As your mother, I cannot fully express how PROUD I am of you."

"Watching you rise above months of being targeted, misunderstood, and judged not by peers, but by adults who should’ve known better, has left me in awe of your strength," her mother said. "Despite it all, you stayed focused. You kept training, you kept showing up, and now you’re bringing THE GOLD HOME!!!

Gilmer man sentenced to 30 years after sexually assaulting his 6 adopted children

WOOD COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – An East Texas man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting his adopted children.

In 2018, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Kevin Ray Larsson after one of his adopted children reported he had been sexually abusing them. According to officials, the child reported that Larsson had improper relations with her when she was 5-years-old.

As the investigation continued into 2023, at least six of Larsson’s adopted children claimed that he had sexually assaulted them, according to a press release from the Wood County District Attorney’s Office. Larsson later admitted to having inappropriate sexual conduct with one of the children.

On Thursday, Larsson pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault, indecency with a child and indecency with a child sexual contact committed against his adopted children, the press release stated.

Following his guilty plea Larsson was sentenced to 30 years in state prison and ordered to pay $2,800 in fines. A lifetime protective order was also granted for all of Larsson’s nine adopted children, he is prohibited from having any contact with them and he’ll have to register as a sex offender, according to the press release.

Wood County Criminal District Attorney Angela Albers spoke about the tragedy of the case and the lasting impact it will have on the victims.

“This case is a horrible tragedy for these children. They were adopted by this man and he was supposed to care for, provide for, and nurture them—instead, he turned into a monster and committed heinous actions against them that they are still suffering the effects of to this day. My office had numerous conversations with the victims and the victims’ mother and discussed the probability of the children being retraumatized by the effects of having to testify against the Defendant in a jury trial.

After those discussions, the victims agreed to the terms of this plea bargain and made it clear they wanted to put this monster behind them and move on with their lives. This defendant committed vile acts against young children, and he is going to spend the next few decades of his life behind bars for it.

I hope that this allows the victims to move forward with their lives and heal from this tragedy. As they told the defendant in court, they are not his victims—they are survivors. My office will continue to protect children just like them in Wood County and hold the people that harm them accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

WASHINGTON — U.S. intelligence shows that China has conducted "human testing" on members of the People's Liberation Army in hope of developing soldiers with "biologically enhanced capabilities," the top U.S. intelligence official said Friday.

John Ratcliffe, the director of national intelligence, included the explosive claim in a long Wall Street Journal op-ed in which he made the case that China poses the pre-eminent national security threat to the U.S.

"There are no ethical boundaries to Beijing's pursuit of power," wrote Ratcliffe, a Republican former member of Congress from Texas.

His office and the CIA did not immediately respond to requests to elaborate on the notion that China sought to create "super soldiers" of the sort depicted in Hollywood films like "Captain America," "Bloodshot" and "Universal Soldier."

Last year, two American scholars wrote a paper examining China's ambitions to apply biotechnology to the battlefield, including what they said were signs that China was interested in using gene-editing technology to enhance human — and perhaps soldier — performance.

Specifically, the scholars explored Chinese research using the gene-editing tool CRISPR, short for "clusters of regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats." CRISPR has been used to treat genetic diseases and modify plants, but Western scientists consider it unethical to seek to manipulate genes to boost the performance of healthy people.

"While the potential leveraging of CRISPR to increase human capabilities on the future battlefield remains only a hypothetical possibility at the present, there are indications that Chinese military researchers are starting to explore its potential," wrote the scholars, Elsa Kania, an expert on Chinese defense technology at the Center for a New American Security, and Wilson VornDick, a consultant on China matters and former Navy officer.

"Chinese military scientists and strategists have consistently emphasized that biotechnology could become a 'new strategic commanding heights of the future Revolution in Military Affairs,'" the scholars wrote, quoting a 2015 article in a military newspaper.
