Doctors and residents across China continue to report more infections and deaths as the latest wave of COVID-19 continues, portraying a far more severe situation than the Chinese regime is letting on.

Schools in various provinces are reportedly suspending classes and placing students in quarantine, leading to growing concerns among the public of a return of lockdowns, according to information provided to the Chinese language version of The Epoch Times and on social media.

A “home quarantine notice”—issued by a primary school in Guangzhou and circulated by Chinese netizens on China’s TikTok equivalent, Douyin, before it was posted to social media platform X on May 26 before CCP censors could delete it—has attracted widespread attention.

The notice said that a third grade student was ordered to undergo quarantine for seven days after being diagnosed with COVID-19. After the quarantine period, health certificates from a clinic and community health service agency were required for the student to return to school.

Schools in Shaanxi and Jiangsu also suspended classes after some students exhibited fevers, which were suspected to be COVID-19 infections.

The Chinese communist regime’s official data show that the COVID-19 infection rate doubled in April, with 168,507 cases, including 340 severe cases and nine deaths. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) said that infection rates in China’s southern provinces were higher than those in the north.

Chinese state media Xinhua reported on May 28 that, according to health officials, the upward trend of COVID-19 infections has slowed, and in most provinces the epidemic has reached a peak or is on a downward trend.

However, residents across the country told The Epoch Times that the situation is far worse and that official data continue to not match their lived experience.

Ukrainian attacks trigger power outages in Russia – officials

Kiev has targeted energy infrastructure in several Russian regions just hours after talks in Istanbul

The Ukrainian military launched drone strikes on multiple Russian regions late Monday evening, causing a complete blackout in the Zaporozhye Region and leaving parts of Kherson without electricity, according to local governors.

The attack damaged high-voltage equipment in the northwestern part of Zaporozhye, resulting in a region-wide outage, Governor Evgeny Balitsky wrote on Telegram shortly before midnight.

“Healthcare facilities have been switched to backup power sources,” Balitsky noted, adding that authorities are working to restore energy supply through alternative routes as quickly as possible.

About 20 minutes later, Kherson Region Governor Vladimir Saldo reported that a Ukrainian drone strike had hit a new substation in the Genichesky district, cutting power to a large portion of the region.

“More than 104,000 people and 44 socially significant facilities” across roughly 150 settlements were affected, Saldo said. “All critical facilities were connected to backup power supplies,” he added.

The strikes came just hours after Moscow and Kiev concluded the second round of direct peace talks in Istanbul, during which both sides exchanged memorandums outlining their respective proposals for resolving the conflict.

According to the Russian memorandum, a “final settlement” would require international recognition of the former Ukrainian territories as parts of Russia, and a full withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from those areas.

Russia banned from ice hockey in 2026 Olympics

Russian teams, including the country's powerful national ice hockey side, remain banned from competing at next year's Milano-Cortina winter Olympics as part of sanctions imposed following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday.

The IOC was responding to reports out of Russia that hockey officials from the country had held talks with the international ice hockey federation (IIHF) over Olympic participation.

"The IOC Executive Board recommendation from March 2023 with regard to teams of athletes with a Russian passport remains in place," the IOC said.

"It is based on the fact that, by definition, a group of Individual Neutral Athletes cannot be considered a team. We take note that the IIHF has confirmed that it will follow this recommendation.

A small number of individual Russian and Belarusian athletes were allowed to take part in the Paris 2024 summer Olympics after rigorous vetting by the IOC.

They competed without the Russian or Belarusian flag and anthem. Instead they took part as neutral athletes. All Russian teams were banned. Belarus has acted as a staging ground for the invasion.

Four Russian figure skaters in men's and women's singles were recently approved by the International Skating Union to try to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics as neutral athletes.

Russian ice hockey players won gold at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and silver four years later in Beijing.

Zelensky calls Russian negotiators ‘idiots’

The Ukrainian leader has dismissed Moscow’s proposal for a limited ceasefire to facilitate “Christian burials” for the fallen soldiers

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has lashed out at the Russian delegation participating in the Istanbul talks, dismissing Moscow’s proposal for a temporary ceasefire intended to allow the sides to recover the bodies of fallen soldiers for “Christian burial.”

Following the second round of direct negotiations between Moscow and Kiev held in Türkiye on Monday, the head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, proposed a short-term truce in several areas along the front line.

“We want to create the conditions for the bodies to be collected and handed over for Christian burial,” Medinsky stated. He said the measure would help prevent potential disease outbreaks and facilitate the dignified collection of the dead.

Zelensky rejected the idea during a Q&A session with Ukrainian and foreign journalists, reiterating his demand for a longer ceasefire.

“They [the Russians] are ready for a ceasefire for two to three days to pick up the dead from the battlefield. I think they are idiots,” he said, arguing that any truce should be aimed at saving lives, not retrieving bodies.

According to Medinsky, Russia has already committed to unilaterally transfer the remains of 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers and officers. “We have identified all whom we could, held DNA tests, and found out who they are,” the Russian presidential aide said.

Zelensky downplayed Medinsky’s position, calling him a low-level official who “does not even understand technical things.” He claimed that such exchanges already occur between Ukrainian and Russian units without any formal agreements or ceasefires. “It just happens,” he said.

He also urged the United States to impose tougher sanctions on Moscow to “pressure” it into accepting Kiev’s demands.

Ukraine has long demanded a full ceasefire lasting at least 30 days as a precondition for any substantive peace talks. The provision was reportedly included in Kiev’s draft proposals submitted during the negotiations, according to Reuters. Moscow has repeatedly rejected the idea, warning that such a pause would allow Ukrainian forces to regroup and prepare for renewed hostilities.

Zelensky has a history of offensive remarks toward the Russian negotiating team. Ahead of the first round of talks in May, he described them as “a theatre prop,” a comment that drew condemnation from Moscow.

Satellite Imagery Revealed Kyiv Exaggerated Results Of Attack On Russian Long-Range Aviation Fleet

In a long planned so-calle Spiderweb operation, Kyiv carried out a series of drone attacks targeting Russian strategic airbases across the country. The operation targeted Olenya, Dyagilevo, Severny, Belaya, and Ukrainka, key bases housing Russia’s long-range aviation fleet. Ukrainian intelligence services claimed the operation was more than 18 months in preparation, releasing maps and images of the specialized drone containers in civilian trucks used in the attack. Initial Ukrainian reports suggested massive success, claiming damage to over 40 aircraft including Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 strategic bombers. However, closer examination reveals a more modest outcome.

The released satellite imagery confirms damage at Belaya airbase in Irkuts. According to the imagery, three Tu-95MS bombers and four Tu-22M3 aircraft were probably destroyed and another Tu-22M3 was damaged.

The satellite imagery of the Olenya base in Murmansk region is yet to be published but the previously shared footage from the UAVS also confirmed strikes, with four Tu-95Ms and an AN-12 affected. Thus, Russia’s estimated losses after yesterday’s attack are 12 bombers and one cargo aircraft.

Notably, three other targeted bases appear to have escaped significant damage, with drone attack on Ukrainka failing completely when the transport vehicle caught fire en route.

While Ukrainian officials celebrated the operation as a major achievement, its strategic impact remains questionable.

If the damaged Tu-95MS cannot be restored, this is a serious and extremely expensive, but nevertheless not a critical loss. The Russian long-range aviation has about 50 combat-ready Tu-95MS in service. Russia maintains a substantial fleet of operational bombers, and the loss of a few aircraft is unlikely to significantly alter the military balance. More importantly, the attacks risk provoking a severe Russian response at a time when diplomatic negotiations are already strained. Ukraine has attacked Russia’s nuclear triad, such a provocation will likely force Moscow to reassess its defensive posture.

The incident has again highlighted Western involvement in the war. Obviously, the attack on Russian nuclear portable aircraft was ordered by Kyiv’s patrons and has almost no impact on the hostilities in Ukraine. The operation was planned and coordinated by foreign forces, which provided the Kyiv regime with the necessary data. U.S. officials have denied providing intelligence support for the operation, though the timing coincides with increased NATO satellite surveillance of Russian military facilities.

As both sides prepare for further negotiations, these attacks have introduced new tensions rather than strengthening Ukraine’s bargaining position. The psychological impact of penetrating Russia’s strategic defenses may prove more significant than the actual military damage, but could come at the cost of escalated hostilities in the coming weeks. The Kremlin now faces pressure to respond decisively, while simultaneously addressing embarrassing security failures at its most sensitive military installations.
