Zhang Youxia is a name you've probably never heard, but this guy is now incredibly influential in the PLA. He fancies himself as a kind of Chinese Teddy Roosevelt and hopes to become President by way of provoking and winning a war with Taiwan. He pushed for building absurd numbers of cruise missiles that Taiwan's defenses could be overwhelmed in a single push. There's no firm information on just how many have been built, but there's no question that ample numbers of these missiles are being built.
Zhang intends to instigate or manufacture a provocation of some sort which would justify abrupt and severe action against Taiwan. Because he controls the PLA Navy, he can make this happen. Trump's indecisiveness means that a U.S. intervention is almost certain not to happen and I think he understands this. When the conflict is over, he will have a mandate and will likely become the next President, although the CIA is starting rumors that he is planning a coup in order to slow his momentum.
Some PLA leaders are uncomfortable with a false-flag operation or any operation which results in the wanton killing of Taiwanese people as, after all, this would be ethically questionable particularly given that they share the same ancestry. Those who have not already expressed full-throated support for a massive lightning war against Taiwan have already been relieved of their commands and have been moved into less crucial positions in which they would not be asked to give orders to attack their fellow Chinese people as they might have difficulty in following these orders.
The reason that we know that a war is coming is because all of the people who might be opposed to it are being removed. This isn't going to be a situation like Ukraine where there are multiple avenues through which to re-supply Taiwan. It would take the U.S. Navy two weeks to get meaningful numbers of ships into the area and the fight will be over by that point.
Incredibly, there's been no effort to step up military readiness in the United States and, in fact, massive cutbacks are being made including the recent termination of half of the NSC staff, the cessation all of U.S. foreign propaganda through Radio Free Europe etc. and the President, of course, has made it clear that he refuses to use the military for any reason. China would have literally nothing to lose by leveling half of Taiwan because there's no one who's going to stop them and I think they're aware of this.
Two things to watch for this year will be the annexation of Taiwan and the rise of Zhang to the Presidency.
