Axios: Trump silent after Ukraine’s major drone attack on Russian bombers

Following Ukraine’s 1 June high-profile Spiderweb drone operation that targeted nuclear-capable Russian bombers deep inside Russian territory, US President Donald Trump has not issued any public comment.
Meanwhile, MAGA influencers are reacting with suspicion, warnings, and accusations of US involvement, Axios reported late on 2 June.
Ukraine’s operation, celebrated domestically and by Western allies, involved over 100 drones and took 18 months to plan.
The strike destroyed 10-40 irreplaceable strategic bombers at multiple Russian airbases, representing a major strategic win for Kyiv in a war largely defined by attrition and trench warfare.
Russia has been widely using its strategic nuclear-capable bombers for missile strikes against Ukraine.
While officials and media in Ukraine praised the operation’s scale and success, voices within Trump’s MAGA movement sharply criticized it, according to Axios.
Some expressed anger that Trump had not been informed of the strike in advance. Others framed the event as a provocation with potential global consequences.
Influencers speculate about US role
On Steve Bannon’s “War Room,” pro-Trump commentator Jack Posobiec questioned the possibility of US involvement in planning.
Charlie Kirk, a leading MAGA activist, said, “Seems very much on the interior of Russia. I sure hope America had nothing to do with it.”
Rogan O’Handley, who runs the DC Draino account, claimed — without providing evidence — that the strike was “intentionally conducted to drag America into WW3.”
Former Pentagon official Dan Caldwell warned of direct risks: “US should not only distance itself from this attack but end any support that could directly or indirectly enable attacks against Russian strategic nuclear forces.”
Longstanding MAGA hostility toward Zelenskyy and Ukraine
Axios noted that MAGA-aligned figures have consistently criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and framed Ukraine as a corrupt and untrustworthy actor.
Military actions by Ukraine, even against legitimate military targets, often provoke stronger backlash within the Trump-aligned sphere than Russian daily strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.
“Zelensky and any Ukrainian military operations against Russian troops have been met with hostility from MAGA for years,” Axios wrote.
Trump himself has issued occasional criticism of Russian attacks but remains largely quiet on many events involving Ukraine
Axios highlighted growing pressure on Trump from different factions within the Republican Party. While some GOP senators advocate for tougher stances on Russia, the MAGA base demands disengagement from Ukraine and views the country with deep suspicion.

After Ukraine’s surprise drone assault on Russia, new attention drawn to sensitive sites stateside

After Ukraine launched a sudden drone assault on Russian installations, it brought new attention to the U.S.’ own vulnerabilities, regardless of which side the U.S. stood on Kyiv’s attack.
In recent years, Chinese Communist Party-linked entities have commercially targeted land around the U.S., including in the vicinity of sensitive installations like the Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota.
The Fufeng Group’s 300-acre farmland purchase in 2021 first raised the collective antennae of Congress to such under-the-radar transactions – and even Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis swiftly banned them in his state as a result, among other efforts around the country.
On Tuesday, North Dakota’s senators agreed that the U.S. must remain vigilant for any malign activity, whether it be from relatively novel drone assaults to potential espionage through real estate transactions.
"When adversaries can buy our land, attend our universities, photograph silos in our prairies, perform aerial surveillance, park their ships near our military bases, or even just join our PTAs, they have more opportunities to be nefarious," Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer told Fox News Digital.
"Our posture must always be vigilant, never assuming foreign actors are benign or have the best intentions," he said.
"Whether it’s directly spying, indirectly influencing, or sending drones to blow up aircraft, the ability of the enemy increases when we allow them easy access near our national interests."
Cramer’s Flickertail State counterpart, Sen. John Hoeven, joined an effort to prevent such land-buys and has worked with federal partners to update the process in which foreign investment is analyzed for approval and decided upon.
"We need to remain vigilant against China and other adversaries," said Hoeven, who is co-sponsoring South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds’ bill banning individuals and entities controlled by China, Russia, Iran and North Korea from purchasing farmland or commercial land near sensitive federal sites.
"At the same time, we’re working to update the CFIUS process [which governs federal approval of foreign investments] to ensure proper reviews are taking place as well," Hoeven said.
"We also are working to develop the technology we need to protect our domestic military bases from potential drone threats."
Rounds’ bill also has bipartisan support, including from Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto, D-Nev., whose state also hosts sensitive government sites like Nellis Air Force Base and Area 51.
"It is common sense that we should not allow our foreign adversaries to buy agricultural land next to these locations," Masto said in a statement.
Rounds added in a statement that America’s "near-peer adversaries… are looking for any possible opportunity to surveil our nation’s capabilities and resources."
Even private-sector entities have expressed concern, including the South Dakota Soybean Association, which said farmland must be protected from foreign purchase for both agricultural and national security purposes.

Phoenix Lights witness still seeking answers decades later

Decades after a sighting of UFOs that would become known as “the Phoenix Lights,” one witness is still trying, with no success, to find a logical explanation for what she saw.
On March 13, 1999, residents of Phoenix, Arizona, looked up to see orbs of light hovering over the city.
The unexplained sighting had tens of thousands of witnesses who described a mile-wide, V-shaped formation of glowing orbs that glided silently across the sky.
One witness, Dr. Lynne Kitei, has spent the past few decades trying to unravel the mystery of the lights she saw in the sky, despite previously being a skeptic.
“I had no interest or knowledge at all in the topic,” she said. “In fact, I kind of stayed away from it.”
After the sighting, Kitei set aside her entire medical career and attempted to find a logical explanation for what she had seen and photographed.
It wasn’t her first sighting of something unexplained. Kitei told NewsNation that in February 1995, she and her husband had seen some strange lights outside their secluded mountain home while looking through a bedroom window.
“Right in front of our eyes, a little lower than our home, were three amber orbs in a pyramid formation hovering, hovering one on top and two closely aligned underneath,” she said.
As the couple watched, Kitei says one of the lights began to shrink until it disappeared. Although she wouldn’t share the feeling until later, Kitei said it felt as if she was being watched.
As a scientist, Kitei said she has tried to document the most credible data on the subject as she can, even when answers are difficult to find.
“What I saw up close and personal — it felt as if there was an intelligence behind it. It was mechanical, and even my pictures cannot be explained,” she said.
When the photographs were later analyzed, Kitei found out that what she and her husband perceived as just moments of time were actually hours based on the skyline.
Then came the Phoenix Lights, seen by many, which kicked off Kitei’s search for answers. Decades later, the lights have not been replicated or explained to people’s satisfaction, despite an official Air Force explanation that they were flares.
That same day, people in Utah, Colorado and Texas also saw similar phenomena. Now, nearly 30 years after the lights were seen, Kitei still hasn’t found her answers, nor have others who have been searching for the same thing.
“I’d love to find out who’s behind it, and I don’t know if it’s military, I don’t know if it’s a runaway civilization. I don’t know if it’s a nonhuman intelligence.
But it seems that since then we haven’t seen anything that comes close to these phenomena, plus how it affected the witness at such a deep, profound level,” Kitei said. “It changed their life forever.”

French skies held hostage by mysterious UFOs: growing concern

For several days now, strange phenomena have been reported in the skies over a number of French cities, notably Toulouse, Marseille and Lyon.
While some considered the possibility of a close encounter of the third kind between humans and extraterrestrials, the rumours were quickly put to rest following revelations from Feu Vert, a leading automotive maintenance and equipment company in France.
Some witnesses have described what they saw, reporting mysterious and bizarre shapes—conical or cylindrical—while others have shared images on social media.
The sightings are intriguing, and all indications suggest they are genuine. Since every detail gathered from the various testimonies matches up, there is no longer any doubt: these are not isolated events.

SPECIAL EDITION JOURNAL: UNIDENTIFIED ANOMALOUS PHENOMENA
BACKGROUND:
The Naval Postgraduate School’s (NPS) Center on Combating Hybrid Threats (CCHT) partners with faculty, students, and external collaborators to conduct interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach efforts. Through this work, we have partnered with the NPS Global Education Community Collaboration Online (ECCO) Program to produce special editions of its Combating Threats Exchange (CTX) Journal on topics critical to national security and defense. Our upcoming publication is dedicated to the efforts led by the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) to improve data collection, standardize reporting requirements, and mitigate the potential threats to safety and security posed by unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP).
The Department of Defense considers UAP as sources of anomalous detections in one or more domain (i.e., airborne, seaborne, spaceborne, and/or transmedium) that are not yet attributable to known actors and that demonstrate behaviors that are not readily understood by sensors or observers.
“Anomalous detections” include but are not limited to phenomena that demonstrate apparent capabilities or material that exceed known performance envelopes.
A UAP may consist of one or more unidentified anomalous objects and may persist over an extended period of time.
This call for papers is your opportunity to contribute to the growing body of knowledge surrounding UAP, advance the science of UAP, and to engage in interdisciplinary discussions that explore their scientific and technological implications.
GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS:
Topics of interest for this issue may include:
Emerging Technology: Investigations into the physical properties and behaviors that could be considered UAP, such as advanced propulsion, maneuverability, stealth materials, and power generation.
UAP Characterization: Creating new, improving, and leveraging existing sensing modalities to characterize UAP with higher fidelity.
Data Analysis: Innovative methodologies for analyzing observational data from various sources and sensors.
Theoretical Frameworks: Development of theories to explain the phenomena associated with UAP, including unresolved UAP sightings or events, integrating insights from physics, engineering, and other relevant disciplines.
Historical Context: Studies that place UAP within a historical framework, exploring past sightings and their implications for contemporary understanding.
Community Involvement & Science: Emerging methods and technologies that can incorporate citizen science to overcome current barriers including spatial and temporal collection biases.
UAP represent a broad range of challenges, and so authors are not limited to the example topics above. We welcome paper proposals on adjacent topics that have a demonstrable link to UAP. If you have a written work that is already in progress, and which you think might be a good fit for this special issue, we encourage you to pitch it to us. However, we cannot accept articles that have already been published elsewhere. A research report or similar work that has not appeared in a public-facing forum is acceptable. If you are unsure or have questions, please contact us. For consideration, please provide an outline of the topic you are interested in, along with a brief summary of your proposed approach and key areas of focus at this LINK. Authors are encouraged to supply high-resolution photographs and other artwork for use in illustrating their essays. However, the final decision on whether a particular piece of art is of sufficient quality and resolution to be included will rest with the CTX Journal graphic designer.
THE CTX PRODUCTION PROCESS:
Once your essay has been accepted for publication in the special issue, the CTX Journal team will provide edits and flag any instances where we see a need for clarification or more information. Authors will then have the opportunity to make minor revisions, answer all queries, and approve the edited version.
Every article will be proofread a second time prior to submission to typesetting. The entire journal is then proofread twice more, in our effort to ensure that the journal meets the highest publication standards prior to publication on the CTX Journal website.
