Police are investigating the discovery of box cutters on a plane scheduled to fly from Toronto to New York on Sept. 11, according to a published report.

The Globe and Mail says the jet was due to take off at 9:00 a.m., but was grounded minutes after two hijacked jets slammed into the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan.

It's believed terrorists used the razor-sharp tools to overpower the pilots and crews of those aircraft, which left from U.S. airports.

The box cutters were reportedly found on an Air Canada jet Sept. 14, as the plane prepared to leave from Toronto to Calgary. The carrier confirmed Saturday that it was the same aircraft that had been scheduled to fly to New York Sept. 11.

Word that knives were discovered is not new, according to CBC TV reporter Norman Hermant. But the possible connection to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is. It's still not clear when the box cutters were put on plane.

Globe and Mail investigative reporter Victor Malarek said RCMP officers are now interviewing passengers who were on the original flight.

"It's a heavy-duty investigation. There's a heavy lid of secrecy on it. The RCMP are quite concerned with what they've found … The coincidences are too chilling and too scary," Malarek told CBC Newsworld.

A knowledgeable source said two small knives were found on a Delta flight that was supposed to depart Boston, and a box cutter was found on an Atlanta-to-Brussels Delta flight. These planes didn't take off since all flights were grounded after the hijackings. The tools were found when the planes were searched.

Investigators say they aren't sure whether the tools found were intended for some sort of innocent use or whether their owners may have had malicious intent. But they say the two planes' passenger manifests have been checked. And investigators increasingly believe that the weapons may have been prepositioned by accomplices for use by others. As one U.S. official told Time magazine, "These look like inside jobs."

Charles Miller, a U.S. Justice Department spokesman, told CNN some box cutters were found on other planes besides the four hijacked ones, but he did not provide any details.

Box cutters on Sept. 11 Air Canada N.Y. flight

The RCMP are investigating the discovery of box cutters on an Air Canada plane that was to fly from Toronto to New York on Sept. 11, The Globe and Mail has learned.

Flight 704, which was scheduled to leave at 9 a.m., never took off from Pearson International Airport. It was grounded minutes after two hijacked airliners slammed into the World Trade Center in New York.

The Air Canada passengers left the plane and went home.

The Globe has learned that over the past few weeks, RCMP investigators have visited most of the passengers on Flight 704.

One passenger who was on board the aircraft confirmed yesterday that the Mounties had come to his home. "They asked me if I had noticed anything suspicious . . . if I remember anyone who looked suspicious."

The passenger, who asked not to be identified, said he was instructed by police not to speak to anyone about the investigation.

"I asked them why they were asking questions and they told me box cutters were found under some of the seats. It's pretty scary to know that I was on a flight to New York on Sept. 11 and box cutters were under some seats."

The terrorists who hijacked the four U.S. airplanes on that day used box cutters in their attacks on the crews and passengers.

The four airplanes they commandeered left three different airports – in Boston, New York and Washington. The first, American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston, crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center at 8:48 a.m. The last plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a Pennsylvania field at 10:10 a.m.

RCMP spokesman Jack Bellerose refused to confirm or deny the discovery, saying that "even if we had information to that effect, we would not be able to give it to you because it would be part of an investigation."

However, a police source said once the discovery was made, the aircraft was secured and thoroughly combed for possible leads.

Laura Cooke, a spokeswoman for Air Canada, said "if your information is correct, then this is a police matter and I can't comment."

She confirmed, however, that on Sept. 14, Peel Regional Police had been called in to investigate the discovery of two X-Acto knives in overhead bins of an Air Canada Airbus 320 that had been grounded at Pearson International Airport on Sept. 11.

X-Acto knives have razor-sharp retractable blades and can used as box cutters.

The knives were found by a passenger as Flight 792, from Toronto to Calgary, was boarding.

That aircraft was the same one that was to have been used for Flight 704 to New York on Sept. 11, The Globe and Mail has learned.

Peel Regional Police and the RCMP were called in and the aircraft was impounded for a thorough search using dogs trained to sniff out explosives and weapons. All the passengers were taken off the flight and put on another plane bound for Calgary.

Investigators on both sides of the Atlantic now have evidence that there were at least six hijack teams and 30 terrorists scheduled to take part in the Sept. 11 operation. The Guardian is reporting in today's editions that knives were found on a Continental Airlines flight that was supposed to leave Newark Airport in New Jersey on the morning of Sept. 11.

Because of the way that the postdoctoral system is managed, postdoctoral research is widely mistaken to be an academic degree in China. The government's administration of the postdoctoral system has been criticized for hindering innovative research, as too much effort is spent on evaluations, and overemphasis on performance prevents the creation of a relaxing research environment.

Seven Nobel Prize winners and dozens of other scientists are publicly questioning the federal government’s prosecution of Harvard professor Charles Lieber and criticizing the university for failing to defend him against charges that he hid his ties to a Chinese government recruitment program.

A letter signed by 40 academics from across the country, including several at Harvard, calls the government’s case against Lieber “unjust.” It also suggests that US scientists are becoming increasingly vocal in opposing the government’s crackdown on academics with financial and research ties to China.

The Sejm has adopted a new national holiday. July 11 will be the National Day of Remembrance of Poles - Victims of Genocide committed by the OUN and UPA in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic.

In the years 1939-1946, Ukrainian nationalists from the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and other Ukrainian nationalist formations operating in the Eastern Borderlands of the Second Polish Republic (Volhynia, Tarnopol, Stanisławów, Lviv, Polesie voivodeships) and the current Lublin and Subcarpathian voivodeships committed the crime of genocide against the Polish population. They murdered over one hundred thousand Poles, mainly rural residents, destroyed their property and led to the exile of hundreds of thousands of Poles from the Eastern Borderlands of the Second Polish Republic.

The apogee of this crime fell in July 1943, and the symbolic date of the hecatomb of Poles at the hands of Ukrainian nationalists is July 11, 1943, when Poles were murdered in about a hundred towns.

"Martyrdom due to belonging to the Polish nation deserves to be remembered in the form of a day distinguished annually by the Polish state, on which tribute will be paid to the victims," the act states.

>July 11 will be the National Day of Remembrance of Poles - Victims of Genocide committed by the OUN and UPA in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine considers the decision of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland to establish July 11 as the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the so-called “genocide committed by the OUN and UPA in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic” as contrary to the spirit of good-neighborly relations between Ukraine and Poland.

Such unilateral steps do not contribute to achieving mutual understanding and reconciliation, which our countries have been working on for a long time, in particular in the format of the Joint Ukrainian-Polish Group on Historical Dialogue, which operates with the participation of the Ministries of Culture and Institutes of National Remembrance of the two countries.

Ukraine consistently advocates for scientific, impartial study of the complex pages of our common history. We are convinced that the path to true reconciliation lies through dialogue, mutual respect and joint work of historians, and not through political unilateral assessments.

We call on the Polish side to refrain from steps that could lead to increased tension in bilateral relations and undermine the achievements made through constructive dialogue and cooperation between Ukraine and Poland.

Despite the bias and political context of the resolution of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, we continue to follow the path of conducting search and exhumation works on the territory of Ukraine and Poland, respectively. We already have practical results on this path, which should continue to develop in the future.

Once again, we remind you that Poles should not look for enemies among Ukrainians, and Ukrainians should not look for enemies among Poles. We have a common enemy - Russia.

For the sake of common strength, freedom and security of our two friendly countries, we must jointly solve problematic issues, and not exacerbate them.
