Joshua J. Smith, a Tennessee businessman and former federal inmate, has been appointed as the deputy director of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP). Smith was pardoned by former President Donald Trump for drug trafficking crimes committed more than two decades ago.
After his release in 2003, Smith dedicated himself to prison reform and inmate rehabilitation, founding the nonprofit Fourth Purpose to support incarcerated individuals. His appointment marks the first time a formerly incarcerated person has held a leadership role within the BOP.

ICE Seizes Illegal Alien Who Tried To Join ISIS After The Biden Admin Let Him Go
A Colombian illegal alien who attempted to join ISIS after being released into the country by the Biden administration has been captured by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), The Daily Wire can exclusively reveal.
ICE says that the 35-year-old illegal alien from Colombia entered the United States in Lukeville, Arizona on July 14, 2024. He was then apprehended by Customs and Border Protection, who found he did not have valid documentation. He was entered into removal proceedings, but was later released into the interior of the United States by the Biden administration.
Then he tried to join ISIS.
ICE learned from the Department of Justice in May that the Colombian illegal alien was in communication with a social media account that claimed to arrange travel and combat training for those who want to join the Islamic terror organization. The social media account asked the illegal alien to record and send videos of himself pledging allegiance to ISIS.
He was arrested on May 22, 2025 in a joint effort between ICE and the FBI in the Boston area during Operation Patriot, a wider operation in the area that resulted in the arrest of nearly 1,500 illegal aliens in the region.
“This Colombian alien entered the country illegally and was released under the Biden administration. He went on to engage with an ISIS recruiter,” an ICE spokesman told The Daily Wire. “If we’re going to make America safe again, we need to ensure those coming to this country do so legally, and are properly processed, which for four years was not the case.”
News of the Colombian’s arrest comes just after ICE arrested a suspected member of Al Qaeda late last month in Philadelphia. That man, a Tajikistan-born Russian national, entered the United States by way of California in 2023 and was similarly paroled into the interior of the country under the Biden administration despite not having an immigrant visa.
ICE and the FBI worked together to arrest the man after Tajikistan warned that the illegal alien is a fugitive thought to have ties to a criminal organization. The Russian national is now in ICE custody, pending his removal from the United States.
Just days before the arrests became public, a different illegal alien, this one an Egyptian national, injured several people in a firebombing terrorist attack against a pro-Israel demonstration in Boulder, Colorado.
The Biden administration not only witnessed a drastic surge in the number of terror suspects who attempted to enter the United States, but also attempted to cover up the surge, one former Border Patrol Chief charged last year.
“In San Diego, we had an exponential increase in significant interest aliens. These are aliens with significant ties to terrorism,” Former Chief Patrol Officer Aaron Heitke said during a hearing with the Homeland Security Committee in September. “Prior to this administration, the San Diego sector averaged 10 to 15 SIA arrests per year. Once word was out the border was far easier to cross San Diego went to over 100 SIAs in 2022 well over that in 2023, and even more than that registered this year.”
The Biden administration, Heitke said, barred him from publicly discussing the drastic increase.
“At the time I was told I could not release any information on this increase in SIAs or mention any of the arrests,” he said, adding that the administration “was trying to convince the public there was no threat at the border.”
Some terror suspects were actually let into the country. The Biden administration even paroled hundreds of potential terrorists into the interior of the United States, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard explained in April.
“Just the other day, we found 700 alien terrorists who have ties to MS-13, Tren de Aragua, and the Sinaloa cartel,” Gabbard revealed during a cabinet meeting in the White House. She added that the National Counterterrorism Center “identified almost 600 individuals with ties to other terrorists who came through our border illegally, claimed asylum, and under the Biden administration were paroled here within our borders.”

$9 billion Doge recissions package formally introduced, vote next neek
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise has officially introduced legislation to enact the White House’s so-called rescissions package, which would claw back $9.4 billion that lawmakers have already approved and pave the way for a vote on the chamber floor as soon as Tuesday.
“As last month’s credit rating downgrade by Moody’s reaffirmed, we need to drastically reduce deficit spending in Washington and get back to focusing on the top priorities of the American taxpayer,” Scalise contended in a statement Friday. “The rescissions request sent to Congress by the Trump Administration takes the federal government in a new direction where we actually cut waste, fraud, and abuse and hold agencies accountable to the American people.”
The measure, which includes slashing $8.3 billion in foreign aid and $1.1 billion for public broadcasting, will head to the House Rules Committee on Tuesday afternoon.
It comes as the 45-day clock ticks down: Congress must act on President Donald Trump’s rescissions request by July 18, or the White House will be required to spend the money as directed in law. The rescissions process was created by the decades-old law enacted to block presidents from withholding federal cash that Congress has already approved.
Republicans in the House are expected to move the request as is.
“There’ll be something in there that people don’t like, but they’ll have to make a decision if saving the money is worth giving something up. And that’s an individual calculus for each member,” said House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole of Oklahoma this week.
In the Senate, however, Republicans are exploring options to change the package because there are lawmakers in both chambers who take issue with holding back funding for global AIDS prevention efforts and public media, including for PBS and NPR that serve rural communities.
Cole told reporters this week that he supports the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, but still plans to vote for the bill.

House passes bill to restrict Small Business Administration loans for noncitizens
It’s the latest move by GOP lawmakers to codify Trump administration executive orders.
The House has passed legislation that would ward off noncitizens from receiving Small Business Administration loans, bringing agency-driven SBA policy shifts from earlier this year a step closer to codification into law.
The bill passed Friday 217-190, with eight Democrats joining all Republicans in voting for it. If passed by the Senate and signed by President Donald Trump, the legislation would require applicants for SBA loans to submit documentation proving their citizenship status.
“We cannot allow those kinds of folks that are in our country illegally to take money away from hardworking Americans who are applying for SBA taxpayer-backed loans,” Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas), a sponsor of the legislation, said on the House floor.
Democrats countered that Republicans have shared no evidence that SBA loans are being distributed among business owners who are noncitizens.
“Let’s be honest about what this bill really does: It uses small business policy as a vehicle for immigration politics,” said Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.). “That is not only misguided — it’s harmful.”
The Trump administration rolled out a rule in recent months to block noncitizen business owners from borrowing money from the SBA. It came about after an audit uncovered the agency had approved in June 2024 an SBA loan of $783,000 for the owner of a small business that was partially owned by someone without citizenship status.
The House passed another bill Thursday afternoon that would relocate local SBA offices from so-called sanctuary cities to jurisdictions that comply with federal immigration enforcement.

A Brazilian comedian has been jailed for eight years and three months for making offensive jokes in a stand-up special.
A federal court in São Paulo said Leo Lins’s work contributed to ‘the spread of verbal violence in society and promotion of intolerance’.
The Brazilian government brought the case, saying the comedian’s material targetted black people, the obese, elderly people, those living with HIV, LGBT people, evangelicals, Indigenous communities, people from the impoverished northeast of Brazil, Jews and people with disabilities.
His lawyers criticised the ruling, saying in a statement: ‘This is a sad chapter for freedom of expression in Brasil.
‘Watching a comedian receive the same punishment as someone convicted of drug trafficking, corruption, or even murder, all because of jokes told on stage, is deeply troubling.’
Judge Barbara de Lima Iseppi ruled that ‘dignity’ trumped the right to free speech, saying: ‘The place of humour is not a lawless land.’
She added: : ‘In the event of a conflict between the fundamental precept of freedom of expression and the principles of human dignity and legal equality, the latter must prevail.’
Lins – who has performed Portuguese-language shows in Leicester Square Theatre and Top Secret Comedy Club in London – was also fined around £40,000 for moral damages.
Two years ago, a court ordered Lins, now 42, to remove the offending special – Perturbador (or ‘Distruptor’) – from YouTube, but not before being viewed more than 3million times. At the time Lins said the move ‘set a dangerous precedent for comedy and art in general’.

Tesla’s Optimus robot VP is leaving the company
The head of Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot program, Milan Kovac, is leaving the company.
Kovac said Friday in a post on X that he “had to make the most difficult decision” of his life to leave. “I’ve been far away from home for too long, and will need to spend more time with family abroad,” he wrote. Kovac said that was “the only reason” and that his support for Musk and Tesla is “ironclad.”
Kovac’s departure was first reported Friday by Bloomberg News.
The departure comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk has claimed the company will have “thousands” of Optimus robots operating in its factories by the end of this year. “And we expect to scale Optimus up faster than any product, I think, in history, to get to millions of units per year as soon as possible,” Musk said last month.
Kovac worked at Tesla for nearly 10 years, with much of that time coming as a top engineer on the Autopilot team. He was tapped to help lead development of Optimus in 2022 and became a vice president overseeing the program in late 2024.
“I’m driving the Optimus program (Tesla’s humanoid robot) & all its engineering teams,” Kovac previously wrote on his LinkedIn profile. “Separately, I’m also driving the engineering teams responsible for all the software foundations & infrastructure common between Optimus and Autopilot.”
Ashok Elluswamy, the vice president of Tesla’s AI software division, will take over the Optimus project, according to Bloomberg.
