Scoop: Democrats probe whether Trump is in the Epstein files

Andrew Solender

(Dems better be careful what they ask for, what goes around, comes around)

House Democrats are asking the Department of Justice and FBI whether it is true, as Elon Musknow claims, that President Trump is in the Epstein files, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: It's the starkest example to date of how the highly public feud between the president and his onetime lieutenant is playing right into the hands of the Trump's political opponents.

• Trump "is in the Epstein files," Musk wrote Thursday in a post on X, adding, "That is the real reason they have not been made public."

• The Tesla CEO also called for Trump to be impeached, a position that even many Democrats are reluctant to take.

Driving the news: In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel first obtained by Axios, Reps. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) and Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) asked that they "immediately clarify whether this allegation is true."

• The lawmakers asked for a timeline of the DOJ's declassification and publication of the Epstein files, an explanation for why they haven't turned over any new documents since February.

• And they requested a description of Trump's role in reviewing the files, a list of personnel involved in their release and an answer for why files previously released to Congress contained "significant redactions."

• Lynch is the acting ranking member of the House Oversight Committee and Garcia is the top Democrat on the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets.

The other side:"Oversight Democrats are engaged in another baseless stunt that bears no weight in fact or reality," White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said in a statement to Axios.

• "These are the same left-wing lunatics who neglected their oversight duties regarding the Biden administration's lawless actions and concocted hoax after hoax on President Trump during his first term. No one takes them or their petty letters seriously."

• The FBI declined to comment on the matter. The DOJ did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment on Thursday evening.

State of play:Bondi released more than 100 pages of documents related to the Epstein case in February as part of a Trump administration push to provide more transparency into a wide array of high-profile cases.

• The files were substantially redacted, however, and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), the chair of the declassification task force, has accused Bondi of "stonewalling" her demands for more files.

• "We agree with their conclusion that the release of these documents is long overdue," Lynch and Garcia wrote.

What they're saying:Musk's allegation "implies that the President may be involved in determining which files should be released and whether files will be withheld from the public if he personally chooses," the two Democrats wrote.

• They noted that Trump and Epstein's relationship has been well-documented.

• "Any attempts to prevent the appropriate release of the Epstein files to shield the President from truth and accountability merits intense scrutiny by Congress and by the Department of Justice," they added.

Editor's note: This article has been updated with comment from White House spokesperson Harrison Fields and to note that the FBI declined to comment.

(Typically foolish if there was anything they would have found them or impeached in the first term. Time and money waster, but that’s what they do. Basically Elon started another Russiagate hoax.)

Two House Republicans issue megabill threats as Senate ponders changes

GOP Reps. Nick LaLota and Chip Roy said they’re “nos” if key provisions are touched.

CALEN RAZOR

06/06/2025, 1:54PM ET

Two House Republicans drew firm red lines Friday on changes to the House GOP megabill, threatening to vote “no” if the Senate made any changes whatsoever to key provisions.

Rep. Nick LaLota of New York warned GOP senators against lowering the House’s $40,000 cap on the state-and-local-tax deduction, while Rep. Chip Roy of Texas vowed to oppose any attempt to delay or otherwise water down the phaseout of clean-energy tax credits provided for in the House-passed megabill.

“If the Senate waters it down by a dollar, I’m a no,” LaLota posted on X, arguing that the SALT cap as it stands is “unfair” to his constituents.

Roy was equally strict about GOP senators’ hesitations on quickly phasing out clean-energy tax creditssigned into law under former President Joe Biden — even calling out skeptical Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) by name in a floor speech Friday.

Tillis has been critical of the phaseouts, saying the House bill is “void of any understanding of just how these supply chains work.”

“You backslide one inch on those IRA subsidies and I’m voting against this bill,” Roy said.

“Because those god-forsaken subsidies are killing our energy, killing our grid, making us weaker, destroying our landscape, undermining our freedom. I’m not going to have it.”

(These guys would harm millions of people and make them pay more taxes for these subsidies, for their state, so they can get votes in next election. Roy is nuts.)

Stefanik returns to influential House intel committee

The GOP star returned to the committeeafter being droppedas President Donald Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations.

(She wasn’t dropped nor did she “flame out”, sounds like Politico hates her for some reason.)

6/6/25

Elise Stefanik is finally back on the House Intelligence Committee.

On Friday morning, Speaker Mike Johnson added the New York Republican back to theinfluential spy panel, after months haggling over how to return the GOP star to her coveted committee post.

Stefanik wasadded to the committee under unanimous consent, along with Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.).

The congressmember was originally set to maintain her seat on the Intelligence Committee this January, but gave up the assignment when she was tapped to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. President Donald Trump pulled his selection back in March due to the GOP’s narrow majority in the House.

After her ambassador bid flamed out,Johnson said in April he intended to get Stefanik back on the committee. But fulfilling that promise put him in a bind: He could either strip a current Intelligence Committee Republican of a spot, or work with the minority to circumvent committee rules and add another Democrat.

Johnson opted for the latter, pairing Stefanik with Cohen and expanding the panel past a limit under committee rules of 25 members.

A spokesperson for Johnson declined to comment on any potential deal with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.). A spokesperson for Jeffries didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.

Cohen has been in Congress since 2007 but has never served on the Intelligence Committee.(he’s not very bright)

Stefanik’s allies hold Johnson responsible for her losing out on the ambassador post, which could have given the Republican rising star a prominent voice in Trump’s foreign policy.

Johnson and Stefanik have been warring behind the scenes for several weeks as they have sought to restore her previous positions in Congress.

Tensions spilled into public view in April when the congressmember publicly denied Johnson’s claims that the pair had spoken about potentially running for governor of New York.

The two sat down together in April in a bid to resolve tensions.

Stefanik has sat on the Intelligence Committee since 2017.

It was her role on the panel that catapulted her into the national spotlight in 2019 when the committee, then led by Democrats, spearheaded the first impeachment investigation into Trump.

Stefanik — once seen as a moderate Republican—emerged as a key defender of Trump in her prosecutorial questioning of witnesses and sharp rebukes of Democrats on the panel.

Ukraine fails to accept remains of fallen troops – Russia

Moscow said earlier that it would return 6,000 bodies to Kiev as a humanitarian gesture

Ukraine has not accepted the bodies of its fallen troops which Russia offered to return, providing “strange reasons” for its decision, according to Moscow’s lead negotiator in the peace talks with Kiev, Vladimir Medinsky.

Russia decided to repatriate the remains of over 6,000 slain Ukrainian soldiers in a unilateral humanitarian gesture during the talks in Istanbul on Monday.=Both sides also agreed to exchange 1,200 prisoners each. RT initially erroneously reported that a swap of bodies in a 6,000-for-6,000 format had been agreed between Moscow and Kiev.

“The first batch of frozen remains of 1,212 Ukrainian soldiers has already arrived in refrigerated trucks at the exchange area” on the border between the two countries, he said. “The rest are on their way,”the negotiator added.

Kiev has also been handed a list of 640 heavily wounded and younger prisoners held by Moscow so that they may be exchanged as well, according to Medinsky.

“The contact group of the Russian Ministry of Defense is on the border with Ukraine. However, theUkrainian side unexpectedly postponed both the acceptance of bodies and the exchange of prisoners of war for an indefinite period,” he wrote.

According to the Russian negotiator, theUkrainian team “did not even arrive at the exchange site.” The reasons Kiev provided to justify its decision “are various, and rather strange,” he said without elaborating.

We call on Kiev to strictly adhere to the schedule and all agreements that had been reached, and to immediately begin the exchange” so that the wounded could return home and the dead receive a proper burial, Medinsky urged.

Moscow’s team is on site and“fully ready to work,” he reiterated, adding that“Russia always keeps its word.”

(Can you imagine how the family members in Ukraine are feeling or reacting, wanting their alive sons back and dead sons back for a Christian Burial. Zelensky are saying no. Z is more worried about the money to rehabilitate the injured and the payout to the families for the death as soldiers.)

Russia foils drone plot against military facility

Two armed UAVs have been seized and a suspect killed in a failed sabotage attempt on a base in Ryazan Region

The Russian National Guard (Rosgvardiya) has foiled a planned drone attack on a military facility in Ryazan Region, killing a suspect in a gun battle, the agency reported on Friday.

Rosgvardiya said officers used technical surveillance tools to identify a man preparing to launch a terrorist attack using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The man resisted arrest and was subsequently killed in a shootout. Police said he was carrying a rubber-bullet pistol that had been altered to fire live ammunition.

Explosives experts from the National Guard’s riot police unit secured two drones at the scene. The aircraft were fitted with high-explosive anti-tank grenades designed to penetrate armored targets and were set up for remote-controlled use.

The incident follows a series of drone attacks in Ryazan Region, including a strike in January, when Ukrainian drones targeted the local oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest, and a thermal power plant, causing fires and damage.

Kiev has recently intensified its attacks despite ongoing efforts by Russia, the US and international mediators to negotiate peace in the conflict. Ukraine blew up railway bridges in Russia last week, derailing civilian and freight trains and killing at least seven and injuring over 120. Kiev also launched a coordinated drone strike on multiple Russian air bases, targeting long-range, nuclear-capable bombers stationed in Russia’s north and far east.

Moscow has said that most of the drones were intercepted and the aircraft targeted were damaged but not destroyed. The attacks were carried out the day before the second round of direct Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul on Monday.

Russian officials have repeatedly condemned Ukraine’s continued acts of sabotage, claiming that they undermine ongoing efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

The Russian military has said itsforces carried out large-scale retaliatory strikes against Ukrainian defense industry sites on Friday, using drones and long-range precision-guided weapons.

US President Donald Trump told journalists on Friday that he did not approve of the escalation. He said Ukraine had given President Vladimir Putin a reason to “go in and bomb the hell out of them” in response.

Ukrainian recruitment officer killed in suspected car bombing – media

The blast in Odessa Region comes as Kiev ramps up aggressive recruitment to fill its military ranks

A senior recruitment officer has reportedly been killed in a car explosion in Ukraine’s Odessa Region on Friday, according to police and local media reports.

Investigators suspect the blast was intentional and may have been triggered remotely. Odessa regional police confirmed one fatality and said an investigation is under way, but did not name the person who was killed when a vehicle exploded in a village in Berezovsky District.

Law enforcement sources cited by local media said that the vehicle belonged to a local draft office. The Southern Couriernamed the victim as Colonel Oleg Nomerovsky, a top official at a regional military recruitment center.

The incident comes asUkraine faces mounting scrutiny over its conscription practices, with the conflict with Russia now in its third year and Kiev struggling to replenish its forces.

Ukraine has been under general mobilization since 2022, barring most men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country. The minimum conscription age was lowered from 27 to 25 in 2024, and penalties for evading service were tightened.

Ukrainian MP Yury Kamelchuk said conscription officers are under orders to bring in 12 new recruits per day and are using aggressive tactics to meet quotas, including luring food couriers with fake delivery requests. He blasted the government’s approach as disrespectful and claimed even men with health issues are being targeted.

Videos have repeatedly surfaced online showing Ukrainian officials using force to detain men in public areas,in what has become known locally as “busification,” a term referring to forcibly loading recruits into unmarked vans.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Ukrainian recruitment officers were grabbing people “like dogs on the street,” contrasting it with Russia’s volunteer-based enlistment. “They are catching 30 thousand people [per month] there now, and we have 50-60 thousand a month enlisting willingly,” he said earlier this week.

One such video from Lutsk in western Ukraine showed soldiers dragging a food delivery worker into a white van as he resisted. The clip went viral after being shared on X. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, reacted to the video with “!!” and has previously criticized Ukraine’s conscription policy, writing in November: “How many more need to die?”

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry has repeatedly dismissed criticism of the mobilization process as “Russian propaganda,” but Deputy Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Ivan Gavrilyuk acknowledged the issue last month, calling “busification” a “shameful phenomenon.”

In response to falling voluntary enlistment, Kiev recently launched a campaign targeting men aged 18–24, offering a one-time payout of one million hryvnia ($24,000) for a year of service.

Western Europe blocks peace in Ukraine – Moscow

EU states are fueling the conflict by backing Kiev, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov

NATO-aligned European countries are obstructing peace efforts in Ukraine, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov has said. Several EU member states are deliberately undermining negotiations and prolonging the conflict, he told TASS in an interview published this week.

In May, under pressure from US President Donald Trump, Kiev agreed to direct talks with Russia, a step Moscow called logical and overdue. It marked the first such negotiations in three years and involved senior officials. Both sides pledged to stay in contact, completed a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner swap, and exchanged ceasefire proposals.

EU and NATO leaders, however, were “relentlessly encouraging Kiev to continue hostilities,” Ryabkov said, citing a steady flow of weapons, military equipment, and pledges of continued support. He added that acts of sabotage and provocation were being planned and carried out, along with disinformation efforts aimed at disrupting the negotiation process.

Last week, Kiev launched a coordinated drone strike on multiple Russian air bases and blew up railway bridges, causing the derailment of both civilian and freight trains. At least seven people were killed and more than 120 injured, including children. Russian authorities labeled the strikes “terrorism” and accused Ukraine of trying to derail US-backed peace efforts. Some military analysts suggested that such attacks would not have been possible without Western intelligence support.

Ryabkov also accused certain EU leaders of meddling in US domestic politics by pressuring Trump to adopt former President Joe Biden’s more aggressive pro-Ukraine stance.

As an example, Ryabkov cited German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who met with Trump in Washington earlier this week.Merz urged the US to intensify its involvement and increase pressure on Russia. He had earlier lifted restrictions on German-supplied weapons to Ukraine, a move Ryabkov said contradicted efforts toward a political settlement.

Ryabkov’s remarks were echoed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who accused Brussels of fully aligning with Kiev’s military aims and called the EU a “war party.” “The main signals from Brussels and European capitals now relate to… plans for the militarization of Europe, which is clearly at odds with the mood of the presidents of Russia and the United States,” Peskov added.

According to Germany’s Kiel Institute, the EU has provided nearly €50 billion in support to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale conflict in 2022, in addition to significant bilateral aid from member states.

(Russia has no intention to end the talks, they want Trump to know they are not wanting to continue the war. The message from the EU and Ukraine are defiant and if they show up, nothing gets done. If Trump and Rubio walk away, Russia will finish off Kiev in a big way. It wouldn’t surprise if there were political assassinations.)
