Thousands rally in London demanding ‘Welfare Not Warfare’ (VIDEOS)

The demonstrators have accused the Labour government of deepening poverty while ramping up military production

Thousands of people marched through central London on Saturday to protest the UK government’s deepening militarization at the expense of public welfare.

The demonstration, organized by the People’s Assembly, began at midday at Portland Place and moved toward Whitehall, with participants chanting and holding placards that read “Tax the Rich,” “Nurses Not Nukes,” and “Welfare Not Warfare.”

Trade unionists, campaigners, and activists from across the country rallied under the slogan “No to Austerity 2.0,” calling on the Labour government to abandon fiscal policies that cut support services while escalating defense spending.

“Scrapping winter fuel payments, keeping the Tory two-child benefit cap, cutting disability support, and slashing foreign aid—while boosting defense spending—are not ‘tough choices,’ they are political choices,” a spokesperson for the People’s Assembly said.

Demonstrators condemned Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s “battle-ready, armor-clad” rhetoric, accusing him of using the language of conflict to silence criticism of his economic agenda. “His war-mongering talk of war-readiness and a new era of threat are a cynical attempt to deflect any criticisms of his policy of cuts and austerity,” one campaign leaflet read.“His call for everyone to be part of the defense of the country is an attempt to label anyone who opposes his obscene militarism and austerity as unpatriotic.”

“We will not and never will accept a government that is more interested in arms sales than in looking after the poor in its own country,” Martin Cavanagh, President of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), told the crowd.

Angela Grant, President of the DWP group, said people were “dying because they do not have food in their bellies,” while military budgets rise and the NHS continues to be underfunded.

Labour leader Keir Starmer unveiled the Strategic Defense Review on Monday, committing to increase military spending to 3% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The government’s plan includes expanded production of warplanes, long-range missiles, and its nuclear-powered submarine fleet.

Defense Secretary John Healey said last week that the UK was “sending a message to Moscow” by allocating billions of pounds for new munitions factories and long-range strike capabilities.

In addition, London has pledged to deliver 100,000 drones to Ukraine by April 2026. A government statement confirmed that £350 million from a wider £4.5 billion Ukraine support package would be used for new drone shipments.

Ukraine experiencing drone shortage — BBC

Some units are reportedly being forced to procure UAVs with their own funds and to scavenge wreckage for parts

Ukrainian forces are facing a critical shortage of drones, the BBC has reported, citing officers from various units. They told the broadcaster that a third of the drones needed by the army are being purchased using unit-held funds or assembled from wreckage.

The news comes a week after Kiev launched a coordinated drone strike on multiple Russian air bases, targeting long-range, nuclear-capable bombers stationed in the country’s north and far east. Moscow has reported that most of the drones were intercepted, and that the aircraft targeted were damaged, but not destroyed as Ukrainian officials claimed. According to Kiev, more than 40 Russian bombers were hit in the attacks.

Earlier this week, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky told ABC News that only Ukrainian-made weapons were used in the attacks, which had reportedly been planned for more than a year.

A commander of the drone systems battalion of the 58th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Sergey Varakin, told BBC that ayear ago his unit could afford to launch up to 100 first-person-view (FPV) aerial drones a day, adding that the current situation is “nothing like that anymore.”

“Now, our brigade can receive only 200–300 FPV drones a month through official supply requests,”Varakin emphasized.

According to the commander of the 429th Separate UAV Regiment, Yury Fedorenko, as cited by the news outlet, only a third of drones meeting the army’s needsare typically delivered via state-backed supply channels. He specified that another third are purchased with unit-held funds, while theremaining third come from voluntary donations by Ukrainians.

Fedorenko emphasized that state-supporteddrone supplies are often delivered with a two-month delay due to bureaucratic foot-dragging.

Drone operators from several brigades deployed near Pokrovsk, the largest city remaining under Ukrainian control in the southwest of the DPR, also reported a shortage, adding that they are trying to obtain drones by all possible means, sometimes assembling them from old parts.

TheRussian military has repeatedly targeted drone manufacturing facilities and launch sites in Ukraine. The latest strikes came shortly after an attack on military airfields across the country.

FPV drones have played a pivotal role on the battlefield since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. The Timesreported in May that Russia has taken the lead in the drone race, surpassing Ukraine in the production and use of medium-range FPV drones and their fiber-optic variants.

(This seems to prove all equipment used on bombing Russia were western drones. Why release this article except to beg for more money from the West)
