UPDATED Protests Against Euro Adoption Held in Major Cities (in Bulgaria)

Sofia, 08.06.2025 12:52 | UPDATED 08.06.2025 16:43 (BTA)

Protests against the adoption of the euro as Bulgariaโ€™s official currency were held across major Bulgarian cities on Sunday. The demonstration in Sofia took place in front of the Bulgarian National Bank building. Participants chanted slogans such as โ€œNo to the euro.โ€

Some protesters carried Bulgarian national flags and flags of the Vazrazhdane political party, whose leader Kostadin Kostadinov was also present at the protest in Sofia. Placards at the event read: โ€œWe want to keep the levโ€ and โ€œThe future belongs to sovereign nations.โ€

Parts of downtown Sofia were closed to traffic for a while as protesters marched through them. Some people tried to stray from the designated route and reach the building of the European Commission Representation, but were stopped by a police cordon and parked police vans. During a previous demonstration, the building was splashed with red paint. This time, the demonstration proceeded peacefully, with increased police presence. Some of the speakers at the protest called for new rallies next Thursday.

Crowds gathered to express support for the national currency in Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Vratsa, Vidin, Pleven, Lovech, Yambol, Dobrich, Shumen, Silistra, Stara Zagora, Pernik and Kyustendil, among others.

This is the latest in a series of demonstrations opposing the introduction of the single European currency in Bulgaria. The protest follows recent positive reports from the European Commission and the European Central Bank, which state that Bulgaria meets the criteria to adopt the euro as of January 1, 2026.
