In a groundbreaking new study, a team led by scientists from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) National Solar Observatory (NSO) has captured the sharpest-ever view of the Sun’s surface, revealing ultra-fine magnetic “stripes,” known as striations, just 20 kilometers wide—roughly the length of Manhattan.
Using the NSF Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, built and operated by the NSO, the team observed these bright and dark striations rippling across the walls of solar granules, caused by curtain-like magnetic fields that modify light much like fabric fluttering in the wind.

A team of solar physicists has released a new study shedding light on the fine-scale structure of the Sun’s surface.
Using the unparalleled power of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, built and operated by the NSF National Solar Observatory (NSO) on Maui, scientists have observed, for the first time ever in such high detail, ultra-narrow bright and dark stripes on the solar photosphere, offering unprecedented insight into how magnetic fields shape solar surface dynamics at scales as small as 20 kilometers (or 12.4 miles). he level of detail achieved allows us to clearly link these stripes to the ones we see in state-of-the-art simulations—so we can better understand their nature.
These stripes, called striations and seen against the walls of solar convection cells known as granules, are the result of curtain-like sheets of magnetic fields that ripple and shift like fabric blowing in the wind.
As light from the hot granule walls passes through these magnetic “curtains,” the interaction produces a pattern of alternating brightness and darkness that traces variations in the underlying magnetic field.
If the field is weaker in the curtain than in its surroundings it appears dark, if it is relatively stronger it appears bright.
“In this work, we investigate the fine-scale structure of the solar surface for the first time with an unprecedented spatial resolution of just about 20 kilometers, or the length of Manhattan Island,” says NSO scientist Dr. David Kuridze, the study’s lead author.
“These striations are the fingerprints of fine-scale magnetic field variations.”

The findings were not anticipated, and only possible because of the Inouye Solar Telescope’s unprecedented abilities.
The team used the Inouye’s Visible Broadband Imager (VBI) instrument operating in the G-band, a specific range of visible light especially useful for studying the Sun because it highlights areas with strong magnetic activity, making features like sunspots and fine-scale structures like the ones in the study easier to see.
The setup allows researchers to observe the solar photosphere at an impressive spatial resolution better than 0.03 arcseconds (i.e., about 20 kilometers on the Sun).
This is the sharpest ever achieved in solar astronomy. To interpret their observations, the team compared the images with cutting-edge simulations that recreate the physics of the Sun’s surface.
The study confirms that these striations are signatures of subtle but powerful magnetic fluctuations—variations of only a hundred gauss, comparable to a typical refrigerator magnet’s strength—that alter the density and opacity of the plasma, shifting the visible surface by mere kilometers.
These shifts, known as Wilson depressions, are detectable thanks only to the unique resolving power of the 4-meter primary mirror of the NSF Inouye Solar Telescope, the largest in the world.
“Magnetism is a fundamental phenomenon in the universe, and similar magnetically induced stripes have also been observed in more distant astrophysical objects, such as molecular clouds,” shares NSO scientist and co-author of the study Dr. Han Uitenbroek.
“Inouye’s high resolution, in combination with simulations, allows us to better characterize the behavior of magnetic fields in a broad astrophysical context.”
Studying the magnetic architecture of the solar surface is essential for understanding the most energetic events in the Sun’s outer atmosphere—such as flares, eruptions, and coronal mass ejections—and, consequently, improving space weather predictions.
This discovery not only enhances our understanding of this architecture but also opens the door to studying magnetic structures in other astrophysical contexts—and at small scales once thought unachievable from Earth.
“This is just one of many firsts for the Inouye, demonstrating how it continues to push the frontier of solar research,” says NSO Associate Director for the NSF Inouye Solar Telescope, Dr. David Boboltz.
“It also underscores Inouye’s vital role in understanding the small-scale physics that drive space weather events that impact our increasingly technological society here on Earth.”

Russia ready to hand over remains of 1,212 troops to Ukraine – MOD

The first batch of 1,212 bodies of dead Ukrainian servicemen has been delivered to a designated exchange point and is ready to be handed over to Kiev, the Russian Defense Ministry has said.
Moscow had decided to return the bodies of over 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers in a unilateral humanitarian gesture during talks between the two sides in Istanbul on Monday.
The Russians tried transferring the remains on Saturday, but Kiev’s representatives failed to show up at the exchange point on the border between Belarus and Ukraine.
“The Russian side is fully ready to fulfill all agreements on the return of the bodies of the dead Ukrainian soldiers and the exchange [of prisoners],” Russian Lieutenant General Aleksandr Zorin, who was a member of Moscow’s negotiating team in Istanbul, told journalists.
However, he warned that the transfer of the remains could fail yet again, saying that there are “signals” that it could be postponed until next week. “Russia is waiting for confirmation from Ukraine,” he said.
“I have no comment regarding the rhetoric that it is some sort of a political decision. It is a purely humanitarian action. Not the first of such kind and, regrettably, not the last one,” he said about the Russian decision to hand the remains over to Ukraine.
Kiev had refused to accept the bodies of its fallen soldiers on Saturday, claiming that it hadn’t agreed on the date of the transfer and accusing Moscow of “humanitarian issues for informational purposes.”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reacted to the move by saying that Ukraine “does not need its people; neither dead nor alive.”
“There is no nation or ethnic group in the world that would refuse to bury its soldiers. But there is the Kiev regime, which professes a misanthropic ideology and is committing genocide against its own people,” Zakharova insisted.
A member of the Russian parliament’s International Affairs Committee, Dmitry Belik, told RT that one of the reasons for Vladimir Zelensky’s government failing to take back the bodies of its soldiers could be Ukraine’s unwillingness to pay compensation to their families.

More Ukrainian drones destroyed outside Moscow – mayor

Ten Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow were shot down by air defenses overnight, according to the Russian capital’s mayor, Sergey Sobyanin.
The mayor’s Telegram channel reported incursions by one or several UAVs almost every hour early on Sunday. Emergency workers have been deployed to the areas where the debris of the destroyed drones fell, according to Sobyanin.
Moscow’s Domodedovo and Zhukovsky international airports had temporarily halted flights amid the drone raids, according to Russia’s federal air transport agency, Rosaviatsia.
The Russian Defense Ministry said later in the day that a total of 67 Ukrainian UAVs have been shot down inside Russia since Saturday evening. Besides Moscow Region, the interceptions took place in Bryansk, Belgorod, Kaluga, Tula, Orel, and Kursk regions as well as in Crimea.
Ukraine has significantly intensified its drone raids on civilian infrastructure in Moscow and other Russian regions since mid-May, when the first meeting between negotiators from the two countries took place in Istanbul.
The attacks peaked during the final week of the previous month, when 2,300 UAVs were shot down, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Russia has responded to the incursions with precision strikes targeting Ukrainian military facilities, including drone production sites, warehouses, airfields, radar stations, and ammunition depots.

Trump administration redirects 20,000 anti-drone missiles meant for Ukraine, Zelensky confirms

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump's administration diverted 20,000 anti-drone missiles originally intended for Ukraine to American forces in the Middle East, in an interview with ABC News published on June 8.
Zelensky said Ukraine had counted on the missiles to help counter relentless Russian drone attacks, which include swarms of Iranian-designed Shahed-type drones. On June 1, Russia launched a record 472 drones in a single night.
"We have big problems with Shaheds… we will find all the tools to destroy them," Zelensky said. "We counted on this project — 20,000 missiles. Anti-Shahed missiles. It was not expensive, but it's a special technology."
Zelensky said the plan had been agreed upon with then-U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and was launched under President Joe Biden's administration.
The Wall Street Journal reported on June 4 that the Trump administration had redirected the munitions, which include special fuzes used in advanced rocket systems to intercept drones, toward U.S. forces stationed in the Middle East.
The Pentagon reportedly informed Congress in a classified message that the reallocation of the fuzes for the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System was deemed an "urgent issue" by current Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
A Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) source told the Kyiv Independent on June 4 that Russia is preparing to launch more than 500 long-range drones per night in future attacks, as Moscow rapidly scales up drone production and constructs new launch sites.
The Trump administration has halted the approval of new military aid packages to Ukraine since the start of his second term in January.
Trump has repeatedly expressed skepticism about continued assistance to Kyiv and temporarily suspended military shipments earlier this year, only resuming them after Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire framework during peace talks in Jeddah on March 11.
Hegseth, who ordered the temporary halt, did not attend the most recent Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting on June 4 — the first such absence by a U.S. defense chief since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
Ukraine has urgently called on Western partners to expand investments in domestic arms production and deliver more air defense systems, including U.S.-made Patriots, to counter intensifying Russian airstrikes.
Despite growing international appeals and Kyiv's offer of a 30-day ceasefire as the basis for peace talks, Moscow continues to reject the proposal.
Trump, who spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 4, has refused to impose new sanctions on Russia, saying he is focused on pursuing a negotiated ceasefire.

IDF says it targeted Hamas member in drone strike in southern Syria

An Israeli drone strike targeted a member of the Hamas terror group in the southern Syrian village of Beit Jinn on Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces said.
Beit Jinn is some seven kilometers from the Israel-Syrian border, just outside a buffer zone currently controlled by the IDF.
No further details were given by the IDF on the target of the strike.
Hamas had a significant foothold in Syria until civil war broke out in the country in 2011, but has since reduced its presence.
Its status in the country has become uncertain following the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December, as the regime of Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, seeks to consolidate power, take arms out of the hands of non-governmental groups, and avoid confrontation with Israel.
After the Assad regime fell, Israel launched an aerial campaign against Syrian military targets to prevent weapons from falling into the hands of extremist groups, and seized parts of Mount Hermon in Syrian territory that was a buffer zone between the countries following the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Israeli military operations in Syria have since escalated, with Jerusalem saying it will not tolerate an armed Islamist presence in southern Syria.
Last week, airstrikes were carried out near the coastal city of Latakia and the IDF said its fighter jets targeted weapon depots used to store anti-ship missiles. One civilian was killed, according to Syrian state media.
The latest strikes have come even as Israel and Syria are reportedly in direct contact and have in recent weeks held face-to-face meetings aimed at calming tensions and preventing conflict in the border region between the two longtime foes.
The contacts mark a significant development in ties between states that have been in conflict in the Middle East for decades, as the US encourages the new Islamist rulers in Damascus to establish relations with Israel.
Last month, Sharaa confirmed indirect talks with Israel that he said were aimed at calming tensions.
Israel has also cautioned against swift recognition of the new government in Syria, expressing deep skepticism about Sharaa, who until recently had a $10 million bounty on his head from the US.
But the strikes and the criticism have substantially subsided in recent weeks.

China shows dozen drone-killers in live-fire exercise

China’s state television has aired new footage revealing the People’s Liberation Army conducting a large-scale live-fire exercise featuring its new 8×8 Type 625 short-range air defense systems.
The drills, aimed at countering unmanned aerial vehicles, involved roughly a dozen of these gun-and-missile hybrid platforms.
Defense observer Jesus Roman shared the footage, which depicts Type 625 combat vehicles engaging aerial targets during what appears to be a coordinated training operation.

Midlothian teens bamboozled after spotting mysterious 'UFO' object in sky

A Midlothian teenager and his pals were left astounded after they spotted what they believed was a 'UFO' in the sky.
Kyle Jackson, 16, and two of his friends, looked up into the sky at around 11.10pm on Friday June 6 and saw the mysterious floating object.
The trio were walking near a school in the area when they looked up - and they couldn't believe their eyes at what they saw, the Daily Record reports.
A black object, which was round and 'completely silent', appeared to be moving quickly below the clouds.
Kyle says the object was moving faster than a plane and had a red light beaming from beneath - and he's since been left stumped at what it could have been.
"Me and two other friends were walking up a path in the Midlothian area near Edinburgh next to the local high school when we all glanced up and seen the flying object," Kyle said.
"At first sight a red/orange light was beaming from underneath the aircraft. "After around five seconds of us looking at it the light turned off. It was travelling a lot faster than a plane at around the same height as a plane, it was also the same size as a plane or bigger."
In footage shared with the Record the black object can be seen in the sky above a residential area. Kyle says he and his friends were left puzzled at what it could be - and they've now come to the conclusion that the only explanation is alien activity.
He added: "All three of us felt shocked and in disbelief as we had never seen anything like it. "It was completely silent so it couldn’t have been a plane, jet or helicopter. It also wasn’t a drone as it was too big and was too fast. It was also clearly round as well.
"The whole situation felt surreal, like something out of a movie. Even after I had got home I was still in awe - I was confused and in disbelief at what I had seen. "I did some research and couldn’t find anything close to what we had seen.
I even asked various members of my family and none of them could come to conclusion. "We believe it was a possible UFO. The videos don’t do it any justice. I am not the type of person that believes in conspiracies but that was something different."

Chief science advisor flags UFOs as national security concern in internal memo

Unidentified flying objects pose a national security concern despite past federal conclusions that they represent no threat, according to internal documents from the office of Canada’s Chief Science Advisor.
Blacklock's Reporter says in a 2023 memo obtained through Access To Information, Dr. Mona Nemer’s office warned of the risk of “undetected intrusions” into Canadian airspace.
“Motivation: national security,” read the note. The document said UFO research could help “support surveillance activities within Canadian territory,” though it did not elaborate on what specific threats might exist.
Nemer assigned seven staff members to a project called Sky Canada to gather data on UFOs, also referred to as unidentified aerial phenomena. No final report from the project has been released publicly.
Sky Canada was not designed to collect physical evidence like photos or videos.
Instead, it aimed to “support citizen science,” “give access to collected information to prevent conspiracy theories,” and document rare natural phenomena.
The memo made clear the project was not intended to confirm or disprove the existence of extraterrestrial life. No budget for the initiative has been disclosed.
Records show the federal government previously amassed more than 9,500 reports and investigations on UFO sightings between 1947 and 1978, mostly during the Cold War.
These efforts were discontinued in 1995 as a cost-cutting measure. “The National Research Council became involved in 1967 when the sightings were deemed to not be a threat but of scientific interest,” said the memo.
At a 2024 appearance before the House of Commons science committee, Nemer defended her office’s renewed interest in the subject.
“The reason we have taken this on is not because we believe one way or the other about extraterrestrials,” she said.
“It’s because we believe it’s important that we have a scientific approach and transparency in how we assemble the information precisely to avoid any conspiracy theories.”
Despite the security framing in internal documents, a $34,369 opinion survey commissioned by Nemer’s office in 2024 found little public concern.
Only 10% of respondents strongly agreed with the statement that UFOs present a flight safety issue in Canada.

The “alien language” of mathematics that only 20 people understand: self-taught young genius revolutionizes Fermat’s Last Theorem

While there are thousands of mathematicians in the world, only 20 of them have managed to begin to understand one of mathematics’ most cryptic extraterrestrial-like theories.
Known as the Inter-universal Teichmüller Theory (IUT), it was introduced a little over a decade ago by Japanese mathematician Shinichi Mochizuki as proof of the famous ABC conjecture.
The 2,000-page framework is considered so unintelligible and impenetrable for most mathematicians that it has been dubbed the “alien’s language.”
However, a 28-year-old who dropped out of his doctoral program to work as a tech engineer has made a breakthrough that could make it into a practical tool.
Dropout revolutionizes Fermat’s Last Theorem
Zhou Zhongpeng until recently was working as an algorithm engineer at Huawei in Beijing. He picked up the job after leaving his PhD program in 2023 before completion.
That was because he was assigned graph theory, but his true passion was number theory.
After 12–14-hour shifts, as well as on weekends, he would go home and work on IUT.
Over the course of five months, he devised refinements and new applications of the theory which he submitted in a detailed paper to Mochizuki and Ivan Fesenko, a leading IUT authority at Westlake University in Hangzhou, China.
Fesenko told him to come immediately to meet with him and is now mentoring Zhou. The young genius’ work using IUT proves the majority of cases of generalized Fermat’s Last Theorem.
The nearly 400-year-old theorem was first solved by mathematician Andrew Wiles in 1995. However, his proof is 130 pages long, Zhou’s proof takes just one.
“His results are infinitely stronger than Wiles’s,” declared Professor Ivan Fesenko.
Making math easier and opening new ideas but still more work to do
His work holds the potential to “change the way people think about mathematics itself, making hard problems easier to solve and opening up new ideas,” says Rupendra Brahambhatt at Interesting Engineering.
“Moreover, it could lead to the development of new tools for things like cryptography, quantum computing, and physics, helping us better understand patterns, symmetry, and even space and time,” he adds.
While Zhou’s work is a significant breakthrough in the understanding of IUT, he recognizes that his work is built on the shoulders of others.
“[My] papers are based on the research of predecessors; my work has only made some minor innovations and explorations,” he posted on social media.
“And I hope to contribute a modest amount to the relevant field,” Zhou added. There is still much work to be done as it will most likely take years to fully comprehend IUT’s alien’s language, if ever.

Alien: Earth "Collision Imminent" Official Teaser: Bracing for Impact

As FX Networks continues rolling out early looks at FX, Hulu, and Noah Hawley's (FX's Fargo) Sydney Chandler (Pistol, Sugar)-starring Alien: Earth, we're liking what it's doing with the latest round of teasers.
It's kind of like an official backstory meets prologue meets visual series overview. Along the way, they're also offering us some great looks at what's to come.
Earlier today, the "Collision Imminent" teaser included scenes of what's been going down on our planet leading up to that game-changing spaceship crash.
Here's a look at the most recent teaser, "Collision Imminent," followed by a look back at "Containment," where the point is driven home again that the ship that crashed was carrying five species of "monsters."
We know one of them is a Xenomorph… we can only imagine what "predatory" (Hmmm…) creatures were aboard with it:

Truth behind strange bubble 'smoke' rings seen around the world that could help search for aliens

A number of 'smoke' rings have been spotted in oceans around the world and a new study suggests it could help us in our search for extra-terrestrial life.
These rings aren't actually made of smoke at all, actually being made of bubbles that are being blown by humpback whales.
In a behaviour that looks eerily similar to a human smoker blowing rings or 'Os' themselves, these rings are far larger and stick around for longer in the water.
They may represent a form of curiosity, and might even aid humans in their search for alien life.
Though these signs have only been seen in an ocean environment, researchers at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute and University of California believe them to be promising, publishing their findings in the journal Marine Mammal Science.
Bubbles are known to be used as tools by Humpback whales, whether it be in a method to herd fish, or making bubble trails to attract mates, but this new behaviour isn't related to their eating habits or reproduction, the study says.
It suggests that they are attempts to communicate with humans, as co-lead author Dr Fred Sharpe explained: “Humpback whales live in complex societies, are acoustically diverse, use bubble tools and assist other species being harassed by predators.
“Now, akin to a candidate signal, we show they are blowing bubble rings in our direction in an apparent attempt to playfully interact, observe our response, and/or engage in some form of communication,” the UC Davis Affiliate added.
Researchers looked at 12 instances where 11 individual whales across the world exhibited the behaviour, as every case saw the whales approach the on-looking humans to release a total of 39 bubble rings, in a study titled 'Humpback Whales Blow Poloidal Vortex Bubble Rings.'
This new study is part of the WhaleSETI project, focusing on non-human intelligence as a way to better understand potential signals in the future from alien life.
Scientists say that understanding how non-human, non-terrestrial beings display curiosity or other feels can help to better understand any future alien intelligence we may run into.
These findings could lead to a better understanding of communication from extra-terrestrial intelligence, says SETI Institute scientist and co-author Dr. Laurance Doyle.
“Because of current limitations on technology, an important assumption of the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence is that extra-terrestrial intelligence and life will be interested in making contact and so target human receivers,” he added.
Dr. Doyle said that this assumption is 'supported' in the evolution of humpback whales' 'curious behaviour.'
Co-lead author Jodi Frediani pointed out the 'friendly behaviour' from humpback whales to humans, explaining:
“We’ve now located a dozen whales from populations around the world, the majority of which have voluntarily approached boats and swimmers blowing bubble rings during these episodes of curious behaviour.”
