'Invest Now Or Learn Russian Later': NATO Chief Wants 400% Increase In Europe's Air Defense Spending

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday urged the European allies to make a "quantum leap" in military spending to deter Russia, which affirms Trump's own longtime message, as the NATO chief called for a whopping 400% increase in the Continent’s air and missile defense budget.

"The fact is, we need a quantum leap in our collective defense," Rutte said before an audience of the London-based think tank Chatham House. "The fact is, we must have more forces and capabilities to implement our defense plans in full. The fact is, danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends."

The comments came days after he stated provocatively that Europe must invest heavily in defense now, or learn Russian later.

"If we don't act now, the next three years, we are fine, but we have to start now, because otherwise, from three, four or five years from now, we are really under threat," he had said. "I really mean this. Then you have to get your Russian language course out, or go to New Zealand."

Trump's call for NATO allies to up their minimum defense spending from 2% to 5% of GDP was once seen as outlandish; but last month Rutte too backed this idea and said he expected it to be adopted at NATO's June 24-25 summit.

On Monday he made a similarly ambitious call. He asked for a "400% increase in air and missile defense" and added that "militaries also need thousands more armored vehicles and tanks, millions more artillery shells, and we must double our enabling capabilities, such as logistics, supply, transportation, and medical support."

Canada is already seeking to demonstrate to Washington and NATO that it is taking significant strides to meet the challenge:

Canada, under pressure to spend more on its military, vowed on Monday to boost funding for the armed forces and hit NATO's 2% military spending target this fiscal year, five years earlier than promised.

Multi-State Lawsuit Aims To Block Sale Of 23andMe Personal Genetic Data

A coalition of 27 states and the District of Columbia has taken legal action to prevent 23andMe from selling personal genetic data in its possession without customer consent.

The California-based biotechnology company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 23 to facilitate the sale of its assets, sparking concerns over the handling of the sensitive genetic data it holds.

In a June 9 statement, the states said that customers should have the right to control the personal information they provided to the company and that 23andMe cannot sell the data like “ordinary property.”

“This isn’t just data – it’s your DNA. It’s personal, permanent, and deeply private,” Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said in the statement. “People did not submit their personal data to 23andMe thinking their genetic blueprint would later be sold off to the highest bidder.”

The lawsuit states that 23andMe holds biological samples and genetic data from more than 15 million customers, which were collected through the sale of at-home genetic tests, and uses this data to determine customers’ ancestry information, lineal descent, and potential risk factors for certain diseases.

Last month, 23andMe announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals for the sale of the company and its assets. The deal still requires court approval. The company later requested the court to reopen bidding on its assets after receiving a $305 million offer from its co-founder Anne Wojcicki.

In their lawsuit, the states contended that 23andMe should obtain expressed consent from its customers before transferring or selling their data to another company.

“Virtually all of this ‘customer data’ is immutable. If stolen or misused, it cannot be changed or replaced,” they stated in the suit. “In other words, the magnitude of the data in this proposed sale stretches far beyond the 23andMe consumers, impacting those who have no awareness of the sale as well as human beings who do not even exist yet.”

Customers have also been advised to delete their accounts and personal information from the company’s website to prevent their data from being sold.

According to Reuters, in a strange snub of Microsoft, OpenAI plans to add Alphabet's Google cloud service to meet its growing needs for computing capacity, marking a surprising collaboration between two prominent competitors in the artificial intelligence sector.

The deal, which has been under discussion for a few months, was finalized in May, one of the sources added. It underscores how massive computing demands to train and deploy AI models are reshaping the competitive dynamics in AI, and marks OpenAI's latest move to diversify its compute sources beyond its major supporter Microsoft including its high-profile Stargate data center project.

The Microsoft loss is a win for Google's cloud unit, which will supply additional computing capacity to OpenAI's existing infrastructure for training and running its AI models, sources said, who requested anonymity to discuss private matters. The move also comes as OpenAI's ChatGPT poses the biggest threat to Google's dominant search business in years, with Google executives recently saying that the AI race may not be winner-take-all.

The Reuters report sent GOOGL stock to session highs, up 2% in early trading; MSFT was down0.7%.

Since ChatGPT burst onto the scene in late 2022, OpenAI has been faced with increasing demand for compute to train large language models, as well as for running inference, which involves processing information so people can use these models.

On Monday, OpenAI said its annualized revenue run rate surged to $10 billion as of June, positioning the company to hit its full-year target amid booming adoption of AI.

Earlier this year, OpenAI partnered with SoftBank and Oracle on the $500 billion Stargate infrastructure program, and signed deals worth billions with CoreWeave for more compute. In an unprecedented message by the president to the premier, Trump told Netanyahu that he expects him to end the war in Gaza – not only to reach a ceasefire and hostage release deal through the Witkoff framework in the ongoing negotiations, but to ensure the war ends altogether, says the network.

Ending the war will aid negotiations with Iran and Saudi Arabia, the president reportedly said. The understanding is that Washington is prepared to offer Hamas strong guarantees to end the war, adds Channel 12.

The reported conversation may explain Netanyahu’s statements earlier today that new progress is being made in the hostage negotiations, the network says.

Trump also clarified that he has not completed his efforts in the US-Iran nuclear talks, saying, despite his disapproval of Iran’s last offer, the door has not closed. Netanyahu replied that a credible military threat must be kept on Iran at all times, to which Trump again asserted that a strike should be taken off the table as negotiations continue.

According to two sources familiar with the details of the conversation, Netanyahu did not receive a clear answer from Trump as to whether the US would give Israel a green light to act alone, or whether Washington would want to participate in or lead a strike — if the negotiations with Iran fall through, says the report.

The report said there would be no discussions on a military strike until Trump concludes that talks had failed.

The Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment on the details of the conversation, adds Channel 12.

Soldiers fired the warning shots at Palestinians who approached them, posing a threa, in the Netzarim Corridor area near the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) facility, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The military said the Palestinians approached the troops “despite warnings that the area is an active combat zone.”

Palestinian media reported that some 20 people were killed and dozens were wounded in the incident — a toll that cannot be verified.

The reports said the people were waiting to pick up supplies at the site.
