Turtle Island

Home Culture Articles World's Indigenous Peoples Day Turtle Island

'Turtle Island' is the name for the lands now known as North and Central America. It is a name used by some Indigenous peoples who believe their land was formed on the back of a turtle.

Though regional versions exist, the core of this creation story relates to a time when the planet was covered in water. Different animals all tried to swim to the bottom of the ocean to bring back dirt to create land but they all failed. A muskrat was the last animal to attempt the task. The muskrat swam deep and remained under water for a long time. Eventually the muskrat resurfaced with some wet soil in its paws. Sadly the swim took the muskrat’s life, but Nanabush (a supernatural being who has the power to create life) took the soil and placed it on the back of a turtle. With this act, land began to form and so became Turtle Island.

Not all creation stories from the Indigenous Peoples of America feature a turtle, some refer to a pregnant Sky Woman, others feature a Raven and others an ocean spirit called Sedna.

Our Mission

The Brown Beret Organization is an Indigenous Chicano organization committed to protecting and serving our Indigenous Chicano communities. We are Community Military, we train and prepare ourselves to respond to the local issues and emergencies that affect Indigenous Chicano communities. We work with youth and adults to build political, social, and cultural consciousness to combat and end gang violence, drug addiction, domestic abuse, poverty, etc. We are a revolutionary organization, fighting against white supremacy and government abuse, by directly confronting them and empowering our communities by building centers of self-determination and liberation.

TO SERVE:

A true leader serves out of love andpassion for our Razaand is ready to serve without excuses. Our ultimate goal is to offer safe spaces that bring joy and focus on justice. Our organization is not a non-profit (although we engage with many locally and nationwide), and we constantly stay engaging in community efforts like providing essential services, supporting single mothers, offering emotional aid to victims of injustices, advocating against raza-on-raza gang violence, empowering victims of domestic abuse, providing cultural and educational spaces for youth and gente, pushing cultural awareness through murals, and educating youth.

TO OBSERVE:

We keep a watchful eye on all federal, state, city, organizations, and private entities (whether they be colonizer or our own Raza) and prevent them from taking advantage of and abusing our people. We video record, catalog abuses, and protest against anybody responsible, holding them accountable for their actions. We support and often participate in the efforts of Copwatch and other groups and individuals who are documenting issues that arise in the community, even working to alert the community of illegal police checkpoints, government overreach, corruption, and abuse.

TO PROTECT:

We are not the aggressors, but we hold steadfastly to the right to self-defense. We protect and secure the rights of Chicanos by any means necessary. As Protectors of the Circle, we take on the responsibility to become a shield, a shelter, for the members of our family, our friends, our sacred spaces, and our community. We must heal and prepare ourselves Mentally, Emotionally, Spiritually, and Physically to offer them that protection. We are not Enforcers like the police, we are Protectors. As Protectors we have the sacred duty to create and hold space so that regular members of our community and activists can operate with freedom and safety.
