CHICANISMO

When we use the term Chicano we include any disenfranchised, detribalized Indigenous person.

We do not use, and will vehemently fight against using the terms Latinos/Latinas, Americans of Mexican descent, Americans of Spanish Surname, Mexican-Americans, and Hispanics. Using those terms is an erasure of our indigeneity and assimilation into the colonizers system, even going as far as adopting the colonizers identity. We are one people, One Nation of both women and men.

To us Chicano means All people of original Native Indigenous blood on thecontinent known as “Turtle Island” and in the region known as "Aztlan".A Chicano/a is someone who understands the struggle of our people and fights to defend them. Chicanismo is born in the heart of every individual who knows their culture and puts it into practice. It is not a term that is to be thrown around as a “cool” thing, or some neo-cultural fad. It is who we are and carries with it a great weight of responsibility and honor, never to be taken lightly.

The Chicano Movement started off in the height of the Civil rights movement and originally it was a fight for equal rights and fair treatment under the US government.

People identified themselves at that time as Mexican-Americans or Americans of Spanish descent because that is how they were taught through the poor education that they were given, if any at all. The identity that was “imposed” on us was that we were of European descent and therefore immigrants, “illegals” in this country. As the people began to read and receive a higher education they became conscious of the fact that they were of Native Indigenous descent, mostly from the tribes of Mexico, but also the Natives of the Southwest with Spanish last names that were colonized through the Catholic Mission system. This revelation __sparked an uprising, a demand for us to reclaim the lands __that were stolen, not just from Mexico, but going back thousands of years before Mexico existed. This land was Native land and it needed to be returned back to its rightful keepers.

At first the idea of “Mestizaje” took hold. Mestizo means that we were of European AND Native descent.

Initially, many activists and organizers were drawn to "Mestizaje" (which should also be considered as derogatory) as a source of pride amidst their struggles with colonization and internalized racism, but over time, they recognized the painful history behind it, which included the violence against their ancestors. This led to a transformation where the Chicano Movement evolved into an Indigenous movement focused on reclaiming traditions and fighting for liberation.

The Chicano Movement sparked a cultural awakening among first-generation Chicanos as they learned about their indigenous roots—through Northern Native teachings like those from the Lakota and the embracing of Mexicayotl and Aztec traditions—leading them to identify the Southwestern U.S. as Aztlan, their ancestral homeland, and to assert their identity by declaring themselves the Chicano nation of Aztlan in various manifestos and treatises.

Update: In October 2020, the Brown Beret Headquarters was Determined Eligible by the National Park Service for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. It was not officially listed on the National Register due to owner opposition. The building is listed on the California Register and is eligible for local designation.

Founded in Los Angeles in the late 1960s, the Brown Berets were an influential community-based social justice organization that played a leading role in the Chicano Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

The Brown Berets were originally formed as the Young Citizens for Community Action in 1966 and were active in Los Angeles’ Eastside neighborhoods. The name was changed to Young Chicanos for Community Action in 1967. Members wore brown berets as a symbol of unity and resistance, which inspired the organization’s third name.

The Brown Berets took on a range of social and political issues that plagued the Mexican American and Chicanx barrios of the Eastside in various sectors of life, including educational inequality, healthcare access, police brutality, and wartime casualties. They were active predominantly in the unincorporated area of East Los Angeles, though they also had a strong presence in Lincoln Heights and Boyle Heights.

In addition to their successful marches and rallies one of the Brown Berets' most important accomplishments was the establishment of El Barrio Free Clinic on Whittier Boulevard in 1969.

At the height of their activities in the ‘60s and ‘70s, the organization relocated their headquarters several times as their presence became known to government official and L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, who thought them too radical. For example, the Berets suspected a firebombing of one of their many headquarter locations was conducted by local officers. Their meeting spaces continued to be targets of raids as their activism expanded throughout the community.

The modest building at 2639-41 E. Fourth Street was one of the organization's most significant headquarters, as it served as the Berets' primary meeting location during the planning of the 1970s Chicano Moratorium. The building stands directly across from Theodore Roosevelt High School on Mott Street. The proximity of Beret Headquarters to the high school underscored youth participation in the Chicano Movement.

Built in 1923, the building retains its original design and floorplan as a mixed-use vernacular building, though it has been altered over time. The Brown Beret Headquarters occupied ground floor storefront space for an indefinite period of time after 1968, as the organization faced continuous threats from law enforcement.

Intersectionality

Although We ground our foundational principles in Chicano values and uplifting our working class Raza; BBO believes and understands in the importance of uplifting ALL oppressed people's voices in a system that constantly wants to "drown" us OUT. We understand that on a deeper lever, we are all connected in a global struggle in this human experience and the only path to liberation is unity/solidarity.

Sadly the majority of our society, foolishly (and willingly) continue to "swim" with the current of this system. For many reasons, whether out of comfort or convenience; either way, when you begin to navigate through the turbulent waters of this existence, you'll begin to uncover so many more, larger interconnected issues in this "immense ocean" of societal problems locally, nationally and (ultimately) globally.

The Brown Beret Organization believes that if we work together, we can create a "new ocean"(figuratively) of connections that boost and empower each other. We can only use our voices and demand what is already rightfully so ours; the right to free educational forms, better opportunities ( jobs, better salaries, more community resources, more home owning opportunities, etc.), and to demand a more just and equitable society. By doing so, we can break free from the chains of oppression and build a brighter future for all.

Here are some key points to remember:

  • The system we live in wants to silence marginalized voices, but we can speak out against it. Uplift all political prisoners, never forget them.

  • Different struggles, like the Black movement, Palestinian struggle, the fight against femicide, prevalent sexism and the advocation for prison abolition, and many more struggles/causes - are all connected.

  • These struggles all aim to challenge the same oppressive systems that silence marginalized voices and deny them their basic human rights.

  • By working together and using our voices, we can create a more just and equitable society.

  • Everyone has a part to play in this struggle, and together we can build a brighter future for all.

MATRIARCHAL MILITANCY

We believe in MatriarchalMilitancy…

…a term we coined and defined in the Brown Beret Organization, because not only were we the first National Organization to promote and fully empower a mujer to the position of National Commander, but also move the entire organization into a Matriarchal structure.

We uplift Indigenous Matriarchy

it is very clear to us that Indigenous Chicanas not only face machismo, and catholic religious restrictions (Marianismo), but now living in the US, face misogyny, rape culture, and oppression by White/European womenas well who view Indigenous Chicanas as a threat.

Indigenous matriarchy is not based upon women being "better than" men.

No, it isn't about or abusing and hating men, but instead they see the need for a restoration of balance, the harmony in duality, women and men working together to co-create and empower each other. It is about community, equality, justice, loyalty, and love.

Many of our Indigenous societies were traditionally Matriarchal as women were viewed as sacred, life givers, creators, and protectors. All the way down to our chromosomes we have unique differences that makes our duality special, we cannot exist without one another. It is the way our community has endured and flourished, and it shall guide us moving forward.

The notion that Matriarchs should remain confined to "domestic roles"…

…while militancy is deemed a "male domain" is not only absurd but also reflects a deeply patronizing and patriarchal viewpoint; women's motivations for fighting are rooted in love, contrasting with many powerful men's pursuits of ego, power, and glory.

As Che said, a true revolutionary is moved by great feelings of love! The lion, often called the "King of the Jungle," maintains his position only with the support of the lionesses, who will fiercely evict or even kill him if he threatens the cubs. Although they may be smaller, mother bears can be more ruthless, readily driving off male bears that approach their young; similarly, the ants, termites and honey bees, have queens that completely run their nests and hives with complex social structures.

Matriarchal Militancy emerges naturally from the evolution of Indigenous Chicana mujeres who have embraced empowerment, seeking leadership and fighting for their families and communities, as evidenced by the women-driven initiatives from the Zapatistas to the Community Militias in Mexico, to take back their villages. Thanks to them for paving the way for us to establish the first and only Matriarchal Militant revolutionary organization
