Actually it was mostly volcanic activity, with maybe a meteor, that plunged the world into famine, population decline, and chaos at the end of the Roman Empire. It happens frequently.
If it's a major event, the likelihood of any population surviving outside of isolated stone age groups is practically zero. Civilization is quite fragile, even with the superior genetics and brains.
