Philadelphia limits its cooperation with ICE

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia will stop giving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement access to a real-time arrest database, accusing the agency of misusing the information to target people who are in the country illegally but are otherwise not accused of any crimes, the mayor announced Friday.

“We’re not going to provide them with information so they can go out and round people up,” Democrat Jim Kenney said.

AG Jeff Sessions loses bid to have Chicago’s sanctuary city lawsuit tossed out

A federal judge has sided with the city of Chicago and denied a motion to dismiss three key counts of the city’s lawsuit against U.S. Attorney General Jeff Session over the Justice Department’s attempt to tie a law enforcement grant to new immigration enforcement requirements, including giving federal agents access to municipal jails.

In an order signed Thursday, U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber granted the city’s motion for a summary judgment on the first two counts of the suit — which argued that the Justice Department was overstepping its legal authority — and denied a motion by Sessions to dismiss those counts.

“Today’s opinion in favor of Chicago and against the Trump Justice Department marks a major win for all Chicagoans and a significant victory for public safety,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a written statement Friday.

“Welcoming immigrants, refugees and dreamers from every corner of the globe is part of Chicago’s history, and part of our future, no matter which way the political winds are blowing in Washington.”

The city sued Sessions last August, after the U.S. Department of Justice ordered Chicago and other sanctuary cities to give 48-hours notice before releasing undocumented immigrants from custody; to allow immigration agents access to jails; and to share citizenship information with the federal government, the Chicago Sun-Times reported previously.

Sessions warned the city that if they didn’t comply with his orders, the city would not be eligable for Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants — a leading source of federal law enforcement grant funding.

4 Billion New Minds Online: The Coming Era of Connectivity

By Peter H. Diamandis, MD - Jul 27, 2018

In the next 6 years, 4 billion “new minds” are about to be connected to the world wide web, at gigabit connection speeds, at near zero-cost.

By 2024, we are connecting every person on Earth to the web with bandwidths far beyond what Fortune 500 CEOs and heads of nations had daily access to just a couple of decades back.

This revolution will ignite a renaissance of innovation, and once again transform our planet.

In the next 4 to 7 years, every person on Earth will gain access to the world’s information.

What will these 4.2 billion new minds discover? What will they consume? What new companies will they build? What industries will they disrupt?

We’ve already seen unprecedented acceleration of network growth and connectivity. But as the other half of our planet plugs into the web, this acceleration will only accelerate.

So where are we going and how are we getting there?

Networks are currently being deployed in 3 different areas:

5G, ushering in a wireless world

Balloons connecting all 8 billion of us from the atmosphere

Space-based networks

Let’s dive in…

As my friend and former Qualcomm CTO Matt Grob explained to me, “5G networks will allow you to measure 100,000 sensors in a city block.”

Imagine the extraordinary possibilities that such a smart world could unlock. No question about your environment is unanswerable, and answers are less than a split second away.

With companies like Qualcomm and Intel leading the charge, some estimates put 5G infrastructure spending at over $326 billion by 2025.

Sen. Cory Booker promised to quit PAC money and then turned around and accepted PAC money

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., pledged to give up corporate campaign donations. He lasted a month.

Booker quit corporate cash in February but then accepted $500 from the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors PAC in April, according to FEC disclosures. He took another $500 from the same group in May. Once hooked, Booker learned, it’s hard to quit.

The same day Booker made his February pledge, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., announced she would quit corporate PAC money. The goal, her spokesman told Roll Call, was “to get corporate money out of politics” and that included donations from PACs connected to trade associations and law firms.

Posted on July 27, 2018

New York attorney general candidate Zephyr Teachout says it’s time to “explore breaking up” Facebook and Google under state and federal

antitrust laws if she is elected.

Teachout, a Democrat, told a crowd outside the Manhattan office of the New York Daily News – the day after the paper fired half of its staff, that tech companies are to blame for dominating the advertising space, “drawing revenue from newspapers and publishers,” reports the Washington Post.
