Boyle Heights march against ICE raids tear gassed by National Guard

Boyle Heights, CA – 400 people gathered at Mariachi Plaza on June 8, for a protest called by Centro CSO against recent ICE raids in Los Angeles. Other demands included legalization for all, ICE out of our barrios, no Metro collaboration with ICE, ICE out of immigration courts, and free those detained in the basement of the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Organized by Centro CSO, the event was spirited and united many from within and outside of Boyle Heights. A highlight was when CSO’s own Dolores Huerta joined the protest and spoke about the history of CSO. She called out one of CSO’s members, Carlos Montes and pointed to him in the crowd.
“When Fred Ross and Ed Roybal created the CSO, it wasn’t long after that Cesar Chavez and I were trained by the CSO,” said Dolores Huerta. “And then came Carlos Montes.”
Other speakers included Enrique Velasquez of Proyecto Pastoral, Nyusha Lin of the ILPS,and Sam Carrera, who is a member of CSO as well as a Teamster 396 rank-and-filer.
“The National Guard is currently in the fuck around and find out stage. When it comes to barrios like Boyle Heights, Barrio Logan, Minnesota, we do not play. This is a language that we are much more well versed in,” said Sam Carrera. “Because what do we do when our communities are under attack? We stand up, fight back!”
Emceed by Verita Topete and Brandon Cho of Centro CSO, the event started at Mariachi Plaza and then protesters marched to the Metropolitan Detention Center located in the Little Tokyo area of downtown. The peaceful march, which included countless children in strollers and in baby carriers, was met by militarized National Guard. Without warning the Guard launched tear gas projectiles into the crowd. One participant was completely covered in tear gas and immersed himself in milk and removed his shirt.
Without hesitation, the CSO security team managed to control the situation and rounded its participants to march back to Boyle Heights. A large portion of the crown stayed behind to confront the National Guard. Leading chants on a truck were CSO members Lucy Amaro, Nadia Topete and Leilani Gonzalez.
At one point Sol Marquez of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization hopped the truck addressing the remaining crowd, “Raise your hand if you were just tear gassed!” A number of people did. “Medics, come to the front and please help them. We also want to thank those of you returning back with us, especially those who have young children. We keep us safe. And we should also understand that the people have every right to be angry. To those who stayed behind to confront the National Guard, we thank them also. What is happening at the detention center and to our undocumented siblings is not okay, and today they met with the wrath of la Raza.”
Over 200 people have been reported to be locked up in the basement of the detention center. A leaked video documented cries, shouts of help, and babies crying at the Metropolitan Detention Center. Inside reports by detained immigrants speak of countless human rights violations like a lack of water, food and bathrooms.
Plans are for CSO to stage another protest on Monday, June 9. For more information, reach out to them on social media @CentroCSO.

The Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) is an American communist organization. FRSO formed in 1985 as a merger of several Maoist-oriented New Communist movement organizations.
FRSO describes itself as a revolutionary socialist and Marxist-Leninist party, because capitalism "cannot be reformed out of existence", so socialists must "take the sledgehammer of revolution to the chains of oppression". FRSO describes itself as a Marxist–Leninist organization, working to "build a new, revolutionary, communist party" in the United States.[2]
Membership
FRSO has two levels of membership. "General" members pay dues annually and must attend one online seminar per year. "Cadre" members must adhere to Leninist organizational norms,[3] including democratic centralism.[4]
In December 2020, FRSO claimed "over 500" general members.[5] In March 2021, FRSO claimed almost 1000 members and "hundreds" of cadre.[1]
Associated groups
In 2002, FRSO created the Anti-War Committee (AWC), which it leads.[6] In 2008, the AWC protested the 2008 Republican National Convention.[7]
In 2006, FRSO helped create the new Students for a Democratic Society (SDS or "new SDS"), which has significant FRSO leadership[8][9] and FRSO collaboration.[10][11]

Los Angeles: ICE chased out of Boyle Heights

Los Angeles, CA – On the morning of Tuesday, June 3, the Community Self Defense Coalition was alerted that there might be U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence at Mariachi Plaza. Two members of Centro CSO were able to confirm eight agents resembling the fatigue attire of Homeland Security patrolling the upstairs and downstairs of the METRO line at Mariachi Plaza.
After confirming, CSO immediately released a call to all available community members and CSO members to rush to Mariachi Plaza for an emergency protest. About a dozen people arrived at Mariachi Plaza shortly after the agents left the scene. CSO was joined by business owners of Espacio 1839, the Chamber of Commerce and were supported by various businesses along 1st Street.
Because everyone was under the impression that Mariachi Plaza was cleared, a rally began at the corner of Boyle and 1st Streets. Equipped with a bullhorn, CSO member Verita Topete led chants like, “ICE is not welcome here!” and “La policies, la migra, la misma porqueria!” Passersby honked in approval and residents came out to support.
Minutes later, a black SUV arrived and was recognized by the activists, who proceeded to chase down the vehicle. They surrounded the SUV while shouting down at the agents. The agents identified themselves as the Department of Homeland Security and “Not ICE” to the protesters. Trump’s recent signing of Executive Order 14159 allows other agencies like the DHS, DEA, IRS and even the U.S. Marshals to act like federal ICE agents.
The SUV was forced to back up through an alley as the crowd advanced, eventually making its way back to the street where they drove off having heard the people’s message loud and clear: “ICE is not welcome in Boyle Heights!”
“Seeing some business owners and community members come out and help us kick ICE out was powerful,” says Verita Topete, a member of Centro CSO. “Being able to respond to ICE sightings is so important. We are not letting these pigs terrorize our barrios! We will continue the pressure and continue kicking them out. They are not welcome here!”
In order to continue defending East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights from Trump’s attacks, CSO has called for a protest at Mariachi Plaza on Sunday, June 8, at 11 a.m. The protest’s demands include: “Legalization for all!” “ICE out of Boyle Heights!” “ICE out of our barrios!” “ICE out of immigration court!” “End Metro collaboration with ICE!” and “No police collaboration with ICE!”
If you would like to become a member of Centro CSO, message them now on social media or visit their table on the June 8 protest.

San Diego, CA – On April 20, thousands of people descended on Chicano Park, located in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego, California. The scene was lively, with vendors selling food and refreshments and music playing throughout the park. The colorful murals were complemented by a variety of low riders and customized vehicles.
The historical and cultural significance of Chicano Park dates to April 22, 1970. For years, the community of Barrio Logan wanted a park built for its families. During the construction of the Interstate 5 freeway, the community rallied and fought back. The city, in exchange, was forced to grant the space underneath the bridge to build the park. But the project lay dormant for years until a community member noticed construction was taking place and realized it was for a California Highway Patrol station. Once again, the community fought against this and won. The city later approved the park to be built.
In 1970, the Chicano Park Steering Committee was founded. From that point on, local artists began to paint the pillars that held up Coronado Bridge with murals showcasing Chicano history and Chicano pride. Over the years several key figures of the community have upheld the quality of the Chicano Park.
The community has kept the park from being taken over by the city of San Diego. In the 1980s, the park was deemed a historical landmark by the San Diego Site Board. Its detailed murals were also officially recognized by the San Diego Public Advisory Board. Finally in 2013, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places due to its significance to the Chicano movement. Additionally, a museum and a cultural center were established after the park’s being designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016.
Today, thousands have come to celebrate Chicano Park Day. The official day, April 22, is celebrated by the Chicano people by putting on live music, dances, ceremonies and lowrider car displays. Rain Mendoza, member of Orange County CSO, exclaimed, “This year’s Chicano Park Day was filled with cultural pride, with hundreds of Chicanos showing up in brown pride attire, sharing images of Aztlán, and congregating to celebrate the accomplishments of La Raza!”
Aztlán is commonly referred to as the territory of the Chicano nation. It is the Mexican territory that became the U.S. after the signing of the February 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Since 1848, a shared connection among the Chicano people within this area continues to grow and is evident, especially during events like Chicano Park Day.
As those in the festivities put it simply, Chicano Park is an achievement of decades of constant struggle against Chicanos oppressors. Its murals are displayed around the park, featuring Aztlán as a nation with a rich culture and history. Chicano Park stands as a place for its people to learn and cultivate their history for future generations to come.
