Kremlin welcomes Rubio’s Russia Day message as ‘very positive news’

The US secretary of state’s message is a sign of willingness to engage in dialogue, spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s Russia Day message is “very positive news,” indicating a potential shift in relations between Moscow and Washington, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

Rubio congratulated the Russian people on Russia Day, celebrated on June 12, while vowing to work toward reaching a resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

“This is very positive news,”Peskov told journalist Pavel Zarubin on Thursday, commenting on the message.

According to the spokesperson, the move “once again shows that the current administration in Washington is completely different from the previous Biden administration.”

He added that“despite many disagreements that have always existed and will always exist” between Russia and the US, the administration of Donald Trump “advocates for dialogue and for solving the most difficult problems through dialogue.”

“This coincides with our approach,” he added.

In his statement on Wednesday, Rubio emphasized America’s support for the Russian people’s aspirations for a brighter future and reaffirmed a commitment to pursuing constructive engagement with Moscow to achieve lasting peace in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

“It is our hope that peace will foster more mutually beneficial relations between our countries,” the US top diplomat added.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sybiga stated “it was unpleasant” to read about some countries sending their regards to Russia on the holiday.

Russia-US relations hit their lowest point in decades under then-US President Joe Biden following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. Trump has moved to restore direct dialogue with Moscow.

Earlier this week, Russia’s new ambassador to the US, Aleksandr Darchiev, said that he met with Trump at the White House to present his credentials. He promised the US president that the embassy would “do everything to restore Russian-American relations,” adding that he believes the two great powers “are destined for non-confrontational peaceful coexistence.”

Rubio sends congratulations on Russia Day

The US secretary of state has reiterated his hope for a lasting peace between Moscow and Kiev

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has congratulated the Russian people on Russia Day, while vowing to work toward reaching a resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

Rubio delivered the message on Wednesday, saying “the United States remains committed to supporting the Russian people as they continue to build on their aspirations for a brighter future.”

The secretary of state took the opportunity to “reaffirm the United States’ desire for constructive engagement with the Russian Federation to bring about a durable peace between Russia and Ukraine.”

He added that “It is our hope that peace will foster more mutually beneficial relations between our countries.”

It was the first such public statement by a US secretary of state since 2021, when Antony Blinken marked Russia Day by saying the US is “steadfastly committed to supporting the Russian people as they continue to build on the aspirations outlined in the Declaration of Russian State Sovereignty and their desire to work together with the international community and cooperate peacefully on matters of global concern.”

Russia and the US have had strained relations for years, hitting an all-time low under then-US President Joe Biden following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. However, since taking office, President Donald Trump has moved to restore direct dialogue with Moscow.

On Tuesday, Russia’s new ambassador to the US, Aleksandr Darchiev, reported that he met with Trump at the White House to present his credentials.

Darchiev said he promised Trump that the embassy would “do everything to restore Russian-American relations,” adding that he believes the two great powers “are destined for non-confrontational peaceful coexistence.”

He went on to say that there is now a “window of opportunity” to resume full intergovernmental ties and to seek “mutually respectful and equal solutions” to global problems.

Ukrainian attacks on Russian planes ‘Western’ intel op – Jeffrey Sachs

Kiev’s Operation Spider’s Web was jointly planned by the CIA and MI6, the public policy analyst has claimed

Ukraine’s drone strikes on Russian military airfields earlier this month were a “Western intelligence operation” orchestrated by the CIA and MI6, American public policy analyst Jeffrey Sachs has claimed.

In an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson released on Wednesday, Sachs accused Westernintelligence services of covertly working to undermine peace efforts aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict, acting on orders from the US “deep state.”

On June 1, Ukrainian drones struck several Russian airbases in a coordinated assault across five regions – from Murmansk in the north to Irkutsk in Siberia – which Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky later called Operation Spider’s Web.

Kiev claimed that around 40 Russian military aircraft were damaged or destroyed, including long-range bombers. Moscow has dismissed the numbers and extent of damage, saying some of the aircraft were damaged, but that it was minimal and will be repaired. It added that most of the drones were intercepted.

The attacks were reportedly carried out using commercial trucks rigged with explosive-laden drones smuggled into Russia.

Asked whether the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) could have executed such a large-scale attack on its own, Sachs replied,“of course not.”

“This was a Western intelligence operation. Without question,” he said, adding that the plan was likely prepared in secret by the CIA with help from the British.

Sachs was alsoasked whether US President Donald Trump, who has been actively mediating peace efforts, could have been unaware. He replied thatthe CIA is “self-operating” and “out of control,” and has not been held accountable by Trump or previous presidents for over 50 years. He believes the agency answers to the “deep state” and military companies that fund its operations.

Sachscalled the attacks a “reckless” escalationthat risked a direct confrontation between the two nuclear superpowers. “Whether or not the White House knew, the operation itself is completely reckless and alarming, because attacking part of the nuclear triad in this way is a step towards nuclear Armageddon.”

Sachs argued that to prevent the Ukraine conflict from escalating further, the US must cut funding for the “desperate” Kiev regimeand negotiate directly with Russia.

“In the end, we can’t control Ukraine, but they can’t fight without the US,” he said, noting thatTrump has the constitutional authority to end the conflict by changing US foreign policy.

Western officials have denied involvement in the attacks. Russian investigators have launched a probe, and the Russian military has since targeted strategic military sites across Ukraine, including weapon design bureaus, repair facilities, and airfields used by Ukraine’s tactical aircraft.

Ukraine ‘didn’t exist in 12th century’, Russia’s Medinsky tells NATO boss

Moscow’s top negotiator in the talks with Kiev has offered to send Mark Rutte a history book

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte should have paid closer attention in history class, because he apparently does not know that Ukraine did not exist in the 12th century, Vladimir Medinsky, Russian presidential aide and Moscow’s top negotiator at the talks with Kiev, has said.

Rutte on Monday accused Moscow of stalling peace talks with Kiev while insisting that Russia should drastically revamp the line-up of its delegation that has held two rounds of talks with Ukraine in Istanbul. “To end this war, we need [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to come to the negotiating table, and not with this historian.., telling us about the history of Russia and Ukraine from whatever the 12th century,”he said at the time, referring to Medinsky.

Speaking at the International Forum of Ministers of Education in Kazan on Monday, Medinsky fired back at Rutte. “I know that Mr. Rutte studied history at university, but I would definitely send him a previous school history textbook on the Middle Ages, because from it he would surely learn that Ukraine did not exist in the 12th century,”Medinsky noted.

He added, “If Vladimir II Monomakh, the Grand Prince of Rostov, Smolensk, and Kiev, were told that he lived in Ukraine, he would probably be surprised and might even be offended,” he quipped.

Medinsky, who used to hold the post ofCulture Minister, is also known for co-authoring a new series of history textbooks introduced in Russian schools. He is also personally leading an extensive online course on Russian history.

Back in the 12th century, the territory of modern Ukraine was part of Kievan Rus’, a loose feudal entity combining several East Slavic principalities and ruled by the Rurikid dynasty. The term “Ukraine” did originate in the late 12th century, but it did not refer to a sovereign state or principality. Instead, it was used as a geographic descriptor, meaning “borderland.”

The notion of Ukraine as a distinct political and cultural entity started to emerge only in the 17th century.
