INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Fill up the gas tank in the car soon, one gas price analyst said Thursday night on the X platform.
Israel attacked Iran’s capital early Friday, with explosions booming across Tehran as Israel said it targeted nuclear and military sites. Oil prices surged more than 11% on the development.
Patrick DeHaan is senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, a national fuel savings platform that provides real-time gas price information. DeHaan said Thursday night that gas prices in the U.S. are expected to rise soon, with potential increases linked to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
He warned that gas prices could rise as early as noon Friday amidst a surge in West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices, which had spiked to $75.90 per barrel at 11 p.m. Thursday on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That’s the highest price since April, and up from $68.15 per barrel on Wednesday. The highest WTI barrel price so far this year was $80.04 on Jan. 15.

“Motorists have a heads up — fill up soon,” DeHaan advised, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
DeHaan noted that the national average price of gasoline could soon test its highest level since last summer if the situation remains unchanged. He also mentioned that oil prices could surge by $5 to $10 per barrel in the coming days if tensions with Iran continue to escalate during the summer driving season.
The potential rise in gas prices is attributed to the increased demand for oil and the geopolitical tensions affecting supply. DeHaan emphasized the need for high-level intervention from the White House to de-escalate the situation and prevent further price hikes.
The national average gas price could see an increase of 5 cents to 10 cents over the next week, according to DeHaan’s analysis.
GasBuddy on Thursday night said the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded ranged from $2.877 in Evansville to $3.357 in Gary. In Indianapolis, the average price was $3.161 for a gallon of regular unleaded.
