Putin and Trump discuss Iran and Ukraine – Kremlin

The Russian and US presidents spoke by phone on Saturday

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump spoke over the phone on Saturday, discussing the attacks between Iran and Israel and the Ukraine conflict, according to the Kremlin.

The Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakovcalled the conversation “meaningful, frank, and most importantly, very useful.” Putin condemned Israel’s strikes on Friday, particularly noting that they occurred just before nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US scheduled for June 15, he said.

“Despite such a complicated situation, the Russian and American presidents didn’t rule out a return to the negotiating track on the Iranian nuclear program,” Putin’s aide added.

On Friday, Iran confirmed that Israeli attacks killed Major General Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Major General Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, along with several nuclear scientists. In retaliation, Tehran fired dozens of ballistic missiles into Israel, some of which reportedly breached its air defenses.

Putin and Trump also discussed the latest prisoner swaps between Moscow and Kiev. The Russian president also confirmed readiness to continue negotiations with Ukraine “after June 22.”

During the latest round of direct talks in Istanbul on June 2, the two sides agreed to carry out a series of exchanges, focusing primarily on seriously injured, ill, and younger captives. Russia also unilaterally decided to repatriate the bodies of more than 6,000 fallen Ukrainian troops on humanitarian grounds.

Ushakov also stated that Putin extended birthday wishes to Trump, who turned 79 on Saturday. “Both presidents expressed their satisfaction with the personal relationships that allow [them] to communicate in a businesslike manner, [and] to seek solutions to pressing issues on the bilateral and international agenda, no matter how complex these issues may be,“ Putin’s aide concluded.

Iran could strike American military bases – Fars

Israel and the US will pay the price for being the “main pillars of terrorism in the region,” the agency cited an unnamed source as saying

Iran could target US military bases in the Middle East as part of its retaliation after being attacked by Israel, Fars news agency has reported, citing an informed source.

Tehran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Iravani, said Washington’s support for Israel has made it complicit in the IDF strikes which killed 78 people and injured 320 others in Iran on Friday.

A source with access to Iran’s military leadership told Farsthat “in the coming days,” Tehran’s retaliation “will spread to all areas occupied by this [Israeli] regime and related US bases in the region.”

“This confrontation will not end with last night’s limited action. Iran’s strikes will continue and… will be very painful and regrettable for the aggressors,” the agency’s interlocutor claimed.

Israel and the US will pay the price for being the “main pillars of terrorism in the region,” the source said.

Israel has claimed that it targeted Iranian uranium enrichment sites in the airstrikes, as well as several senior military commanders and scientists as a preemptive measure aimed at stopping Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Iran, which denies that it is pursuing a military nuclear program, responded on Friday by launching multiple volleys of ballistic missiles into Israel, killing at least three people and injuring over 150, according to the Jerusalem Post.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement later on Friday that the attack on Iran was a “unilateral action” by Israel.

“We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region. Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel,”he stressed.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the US operates military sites across at least 19 locations in the Middle East, including eight permanent bases in Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. The think tank estimates that there are currently 40,000 to 50,000 US troops in the region.

(I have a feeling Trump and Putin spoke about, President Putin to speak to Iran on behalf of Trump, to straighten out details on Israel attack)

Former Trump aide calls for ‘America first’ over Israel

The interests of the US and Israel are not necessarily the same in the ongoing escalation, Steve Bannon believes

The US should pursue its own interests rather than those of Israel, Steve Bannon, a former aide to US President Donald Trump, has said, warning that the new escalation in the Middle East could potentially drag Washington into a war with Iran.

Bannon made the remarks to the Financial Times on Saturday, suggesting that the interests of the US and its closest ally in the Middle East were not necessarily the same in the current crisis.

“They [the Israelis] are Israel First; we need to always be America First,”he said.

“In Jerusalem they should reflect on the message of Christ: live by the sword, die by the sword.”

When asked whether he feared the US could ultimately be dragged into a war against Iran, the former Trump ally said he was “very much” wary of such a scenario.

The Israeli military launched a major attack on Iran early on Friday, striking nuclear facilities and military installations across the country. It also launched targeted assassinations which killed several senior military commanders and high-profile nuclear scientists. West Jerusalem claimed the attack was a preemptive measure aimed at preventing the allegedly imminent production of a nuclear bomb by Tehran.

Iran retaliated by launching a major ballistic missile and drone barrage at Israel, vowing to continue strikes for as long as it deems necessary. Tehran has repeatedly denied it had been harboring any plans to pursue a nuclear weapons program, insisting its uranium-enrichment activities have been serving strictly civilian purposes.

The Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic comes after five rounds of US-Iranian talks on the country’s nuclear program. The negotiations have effectively stalled and failed to produce any tangible result. Following the attack, Tehran said the continuation of dialogue with Washington was “meaningless.”

US President Donald Trump claims to have known about the impending Israeli strikes beforehand, and lauded them as “very successful.” Trump suggested Tehran brought the attack upon itself through its reluctance to strike a nuclear deal with the US.

“We gave them a chance, and they didn’t take it.They got hit hard, very hard. They got hit about as hard as you’re going to get hit. And there’s more to come. A lot more,” he said on Friday, commenting on the attack.

(Sounds like Trump was warning them about more plans of Israel, and they should get back to the negotiating table.)

Trump’s envoy outlines plan for Ukraine peace

Keith Kellogg has said Washington now understands what a full ceasefire “could and should” look like after reviewing both sides’ memorandums

Keith Kellogg, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, has said peace in the Ukraine conflict is within reach. He has suggested exploring how terms outlined by Kiev and Moscow might align in a final agreement to end the fighting.

During the latest round of talks earlier this month, Russia and Ukraine exchanged draft memorandums on a roadmap toward an eventual peace deal. Moscow’s version requires Ukraine to recognize the loss of five regions that joined Russia in referendums, withdraw its forces from those territories, commit to neutrality, and limit its military capabilities. Ukraine has dismissed the proposal, calling it “an ultimatum,” rejected any territorial concessions as well as neutrality, and demanded a full, unconditional 30-day ceasefire.

Kellogg, who was tasked with working on the memorandums exchanged between Ukraine and Russia, explained that his team has developed what they refer to as “term sheets” – documents outlining a potential end state for peace. According to him, they first reviewed the Ukrainian term sheet, followed by the Russian document. The memorandums were then combined to explore how their contents could align in a final agreement, he added.

“We put them together. And we said, OK. How can you meld these two documents together to get to an end state?” he said during a forum organized by the German Marshall Fund in Brussels on Thursday. According to Kellogg, they now feel quite comfortable with the direction of the discussions.

“We know what an end state looks like, could look like, should look like,” he said, adding, “if we could just get to that point, we think it’s winnable. And that’s where you really want to get to.”

When asked about what specifically the “end state” might entail, Kellogg referred to the idea of a comprehensive ceasefire. He clarified that such a deal would apply to positions held on the ground – essentially, where forces were physically located at that time.

The May and June rounds marked the first direct Russia-Ukraine talks since 2022, when Kiev withdrew. Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia later said the pullout followed advice from then UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson not to sign a deal – a claim Johnson denies.

Kiev returned to talks under pressure from Trump, in what Moscow called a long-overdue step. The Trump administration insists it’s seeking a settlement to the Ukraine conflict that will last, not Kiev’s surrender or Russia’s defeat.

(I wonder if Trump knows about Kellogg’s speech there calling Zelensky like President Lincoln. My thought is, don’t put a Russia hater as the Envoy for Ukraine.)
