I read a spiritual warfare book which stated that the long form prayer to St. Michael the Archangel is reserved for priests/bishops as an exorcism prayer and that the lay faithful are to use the short form prayer.
When you are fighting demons you need to be aware of the dangers of spiritual warfare when you are untrained and unprepared for battle. You can't be an effective soldier if you do not know how to use equipment. If you are unprepared for spiritual battle you can ruin your own life or intensify the spiritual attacks unwittingly. Demons have a way of knowing the limitations of their opponents.
Prayers of exorcism need to be handled by those prepared for exorcism. A person needs to be trained, grounded, in a state of spiritual strength and wholeness. A person living a sinful lifestyle will invite attacks by the demons against themselves and make things worse rather than better. Would you trust yourself to be a surgeon without any surgical training or equipment? Too much arrogance leads to spiritual vulnerability. Evangelical spiritual warriors would agree with the need for spiritual preparation, confidence and grounding. This is not about communicating with God; this is about battling the demonic. Even the apostles could not help free demoniacs from people when they were not prepared. Jesus told them to fast and pray as part of the spiritual preparation. Fasting includes fasting from sin. Spiritual preparation requires knowing the tricks and vulnerabilities of the demons.
