‘No panic in Tehran’: Russian expert recounts night of Israeli airstrikes

BRICS talks go on as missiles fall – a Russian analyst shares what he saw and heard in the Iranian capital

“No panic. Everyone is just getting on with their work.”

That’s how Adlan Margoev, a Russian foreign policy expert currently in Tehran, describes the mood in the Iranian capital after Israel’s dramatic airstrikes on military and nuclear targets. Speaking to Moscow newspaper Kommersant’s Elena Chernenko from his hotel innorthwestern Tehran, where he is attending a BRICS-related conference with other Russian scholars, Margoev offers a calm but clear-eyed account of events on the ground, Iran’s likely response, and the potential collapse of nuclear negotiations with the US.

Elena Chernenko: As I understand it, you are now in Tehran with a group of Russian experts. What are you doing there?

Adlan Margoev: We are attending a joint conference with the Iranian side on BRICS and the Russian–Iranian strategic partnership. Our regular work involves informing the Iranian side about opportunities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation, discussing problematic issues in bilateral and multilateral relations, and focusing on how to strengthen such cooperation through various mechanisms.

EC: It was known in advance that Israel was preparing to attack Iran. Did you sense any danger? Was anyone warning you about anything?

AM:No, everything went on as normal and continues to do so. Iranians are used to the fact that there is always a risk of attacks and sabotage. One of the ordinary participants of our conference from the Iranian side (who is not in a position of responsibility, it should be emphasized) said,‘We have been fighting imperialism for so long that we are used to everything.’ In general, Iranians maintain a friendly and calm attitude. We continue to work in the same vein.

EC: Where are you located?

AM: We are staying in a hotel in the north-west of Tehran. The conference is also taking place here and will continue today.

EC: No change?

AM: Except that the cultural event scheduled for tonight in the city has been cancelled.

EC: Tell me what happened last night.

AM: When it all started, we were asleep. One of our delegation’s leaders was the first to wake up. At around three o’clock, she heard explosions from the strikes and the air defense systems that had been activated. A second round of strikes occurred at six o’clock in the morning. Needless to say, we were awake by then. We followed the news reports to find out what was happening.Among other things, we learned that the airspace had been closed. We have a return flight scheduled for Sunday.

EC: Are you thinking of leaving the country urgently by land?

AM:No, that would be an overreaction at this stage.

EC: So there’s no panic on your part or on the part of others on the ground?'''

AM:There is no panic within the limits of what we can see.

2/3

EC: Nevertheless, the situation looks much more serious than the shelling that took place between Israel and Iran last year, right?

AM: Much more serious. The escalation comes at an extremely crucial moment because Iranian-American nuclear talks have been ongoing since April and the next round was scheduled for Sunday in Oman.I did not expect Israel to launch an attack while these talks were ongoing. Now, however, I doubt that the talks will continue.

EC: Judging by the statements of American officials, it seems that the US was aware of Israel’s plans.

AM:No, but they were preparing for the possibility of such events occurring. They warned their diplomatic staff in the region and took a number of other steps.

EC: What kind of response do you expect from Iran?

AM:We have recently heard that Iran’s response will differ from their ‘True Promise’ operationsin response to the Israeli strikes in April 2024, as well as from their response to the previous round of Israeli attacks in 2024.

EC: Yes, it was quite restrained.

AM: Yes,it was done in such a way as to avoid further escalation. It is hard to say how the Iranian leadership will react now, but we will know soon.

EC: US President Donald Trump has questioned whether the US will be able to reach a deal with Iran over its nuclear program. Can we already talk about the failure of those talks?

AM:In retrospect, it’s easy to say that the systemic positions of Iran and the United States were so far apart, especially regarding uranium enrichment, that the outcome of the negotiations was predictable.

However, we have been monitoring the internal dynamics within the Trump administration to see which team or school of thought will prevail. Will it be that limited enrichment in Iran is Iran’s natural right as a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), like other member states? Or that, despite the NPT, Iran should not be allowed to engage in enrichment activities independently?President Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and Steve Witkoff, head of the US negotiating delegation, have generally adopted a moderate stance, assuming that Iran can continue to exercise its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes. However, the opposing team, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, essentially reversed the results of several rounds of negotiationsby stating that there could be no enrichment in Iran. Unfortunately, this harder line won out.

And, in behind-the-scenes conversations over the course of several months, the Iranian side confirmed that at each new round of negotiations, the American delegation arrived with a position as if there had been no previous round.Steve Witkoff would leave Muscat or Rome (where the negotiations were also taking place – Kommersant) with a reasonable approach to the Iranian position. However, each time, his consultations in Washington reversed the process. At the next round of negotiations, he reiterated that there could be no uranium enrichment in Iran. This, of course, frustrated the Iranian side. Nevertheless, they invested in the negotiation process. There were hopes that a rational and pragmatic approach with a view to peacefully resolving the crisis would prevail in the United States. However, as we can see, this did not happen.

EC: The Iranians have warned that if Israel were to attack, they could retaliate by targeting American facilities in the region. Do you expect Tehran to take such action?

AM: That’s a good question. I would prefer not to speculate on the decisions Tehran might make. However, it still seems to me that it is not in Iran’s interest to provoke the Americans and draw them into an escalation. I would therefore expect a tough response on Israeli targets and a more moderate response on American ones. Perhaps something similar to the Iranian strikes on US facilities in Iraq following the US assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. Around 100 Americans were concussed in those attacks, but there were no fatalities.

From the perspective of avoiding a regional war, it would probably be sensible to give Israel a tough response, but to separate this from any tacit agreement by the US to allow such an operation. The big question is whether this will stop at exchanges of strikes on nuclear and/or military infrastructure or whether attacks on civilian targets will follow, which could lead to a major regional war.

EC: Russia and Iran recently signed a Strategic Cooperation Treaty. Although there is no clause obliging either party to intervene in the event of an attack, the two countries still consider each other to be allies. What kind of reaction does Iran expect from Russia?

AM: Judging by what is said publicly and non-publicly, the Iranians will expect the harshest possible condemnation of Israel’s actions. They will also expect Russia and China to raise this issue at various international forums, such as the UN Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA). Additionally,we can expect the Iranians to be even more interested in continuing military-technical cooperation with Russia, including the supply of additional defense equipment — but this is not for public discussion.

(So it seems that the Russians, were around to be engaged if neededon the talks, and perhaps helping in some ways, I’m surprised if this is true, thatRubio went back to his war hawk daysin the Senate, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Lindsey Graham put a lot of pressure on. Too bad Trump, Witkoff and JD Vance weren’t allowed to follow would have been a much easier solution.)

Israel has confirmed hitting an Iranian state broadcaster among other targets

The shared offices ofRT’s Tehran bureau and a Ruptly videoagency branch have been evacuated due to intensifying IDF strikes on the Islamic Republic’s capital. Israel has also confirmed targeting an Iranian state broadcaster.

Ruptly’s Tehran bureau chief saysstaff fled after Iranian authorities warned of an imminent Israeli strikeon their location, according to the agency’s Telegram post. All of the employees were able to safely leave the dangerous area, the office head, Hami Hamedi, confirmed.

RT’s Iranian bureau was also “forced to evacuate to a safer location” because of the intensifying Israeli strikes, its producer, Ali Razmkhah, confirmed.

On Friday, Israeli jets bombed multiple targets across Iran, including a uranium enrichment center in Natanz, and carried out targeted assassinations of several senior military commanders and scientists. Iran retaliated by firing dozens of ballistic missiles into Israel, and the sides have been exchanging hostilities since.

The Jerusalem Post reported earlier on Monday that theIDF had targeted an Iranian state broadcaster, the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network (IRINN), during a live broadcast. The media outlet also published a video showing an Iranian anchor who was forced to interrupt her work when the broadcaster’s office was apparently hit in a strike.

Israeli Defense Minister IsraelKatz statedthat what he called the“Iranian propaganda and incitement mouthpiece” was “on its way to disappearing.”

On Monday, an Iranian government spokeswoman, Fatemeh Mohajerani, stated that at least 45 women and children had been killed in the Israeli strikes and 75 were injured.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei accused West Jerusalem oftargeting hospitalsand residential areas and called it“a grave violation of international law and a war crime” in a post on X.

MI6 reveals first female boss

Blaise Metreweli has previously described Russia and China as threats to the UK

The UK has named Blaise Metreweli as the next head of the Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6, marking the first time a woman will lead the agency since its establishment in 1909.

Metreweli, 47, is set to take the spy agency’s helm in October, succeeding Richard Moore, who has served as its chief since 2020.

Metreweli joined MI6 in 1999 and has held various operational rolesin the Middle East and Europe. She currently serves as its director of technology and innovation,a role internally referred to as ‘Q’.

Announcing her appointment on Sunday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that her appointment comes at a time when the UK faces “threats on an unprecedented scale.”

Metreweli holds a degree in anthropology from the University of Cambridge and her career includes a director-level role in MI5, the UK’s domestic security service. Her appointment brings MI6 in line with its sister agencies, MI5 and GCHQ, both of which have previously appointed female leaders.

The new MI6 chief is set to officially assume her role in the autumn, whenshe will take the codename ‘C’,which is traditional for the agency’s leader.

Metreweli’s appointment comes amid heightened global tensions, including the conflict in Ukraine and an escalating crisis in the Middle East. The UK has repeatedly accused Russia of engaging in sabotage across Europe without backing its allegations with any proof. London has also labeled China and Iran as major adversaries.

In a December 2021 interview with The Telegraph, while serving at MI5 under the pseudonym ‘Director K’, Metreweli described the threats to UK national security as “diverse,”stating that “Russian state activity – not Russia itself – remains a threat,” while noting that China was “changing the way the world is and that presents amazing opportunities and threats for the UK.”

Russian officials have long accused British intelligence of actively supporting Kiev, claiming that MI6 systematically trains Ukrainian reconnaissance units to carry out acts of provocation and sabotageagainst Russia.

The UK remains one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters despite the efforts of the administration of US President Donald Trump, which has been trying to restore dialogue with Moscow and end the Ukraine conflict.

Putin thanks Erdogan for organizing Moscow-Kiev talks

The Russian president told his Turkish counterpart that Moscow has strictly adhered to the agreements reached in Istanbul

Russian President Vladimir Putin has thanked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for helping arrange the recent direct talks between Moscow and Kiev, the Kremlin announced on Monday following a phone call between the two leaders.

Earlier this month, Russian and Ukrainian representatives held a second round of direct negotiations in

Istanbul. After the meeting, the two sides announced having agreed to carry out the exchange of prisoners of war. Russia also offered to return the remains of fallen Ukrainian soldiers as a humanitarian gesture. The sides also exchanged draft memorandums outlining their respective visions of a roadmap toward a peace deal.

During Monday’s phone call with Erdogan, Putin “expressed gratitude to the Turkish side for helping facilitate the direct Russia-Ukraine negotiations,” the official statement said.

The Russian leader also noted that Moscow “strictly complies with the agreements” reached during the second Istanbul talks, which included the transfer of bodies and POW exchanges.

On Monday, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that Moscow had transferred 1,248 more bodies of Ukrainian servicemen andreceived the remains of 51 slain Russian soldiers in return.

After the exchange, Moscow’s lead negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, stated that Russia had completed the handover of the remains of 6,060 Ukrainian soldiers and thus had fulfilled its Istanbul promises.

The Russian Defense Ministryhas subsequently announced that it is ready to transfer another 2,239 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers.

During Moscow’s initial attempt to return the Ukrainian remains over the previous weekend, Kiev’s representatives failed to show up to the exchange point, claiming that they had not agreed on the date of the transfer and accusing Moscow of “using humanitarian issues for information purposes.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded at the time by accusing Kiev of “genocide against its own people” and claiming that Zelensky’s government “does not need its people, either dead or alive.”

Soon thereafter, Kiev began to accept the remains of its soldiers, which were handed over in several transfers over the past week.

US postpones talks with Russia – Moscow

The countries had agreed to restore diplomatic relations following two meetings earlier this year

The US has postponed bilateral consultations with Moscow aimed at easing tensions and restoring diplomatic missions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced on Monday.

Earlier this year, Russia and the US held two rounds of high-level talks, the first on February 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the second on February 27 in Istanbul, Türkiye.

The discussions marked the first major direct talks since the deterioration of relations following the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine. The agenda included mutual restoration of embassy operations, easing visa issuance, addressing the Ukraine conflict, and exploring potential post-conflict economic cooperation.

The next round of talks was to take place in Moscow. However, according to Zakharova, this meeting was canceled at the initiative of the American negotiators. In a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Telegram channel, she stated, “As of today, the next meeting within the framework of bilateral consultations on eliminating ‘irritants’ to normalizethe operation of diplomatic missions of both countries has been canceled at the initiative of the American negotiators.”

She did not disclose the reason Washington’s gave for postponing the meetings, adding only thatMoscow hopes that “the pause they have taken will not last too long.

Since taking office earlier this year, US President Donald Trump has made efforts to reestablish contact with Moscow, which had been largely severed under his predecessor, Joe Biden. Russian officials have welcomed the shift, also expressing readiness to normalize bilateral relations.

Kiev and London plotting ‘bloody provocations’ – Russian spy agency

The “terrorist tandem” is seeking to derail US-Russia efforts to end the Ukraine conflict, the SVR has warned

Kiev and London have been plotting a series of “bloody provocations” to escalate the Ukraine conflict and disrupt dialogue between Moscow and Washington, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has warned.

In a statement issued on Monday, the agency described growing coordination between Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and its military intelligence (GUR) with British intelligence, which it saidis due to Kiev’s “mounting battlefield setbacks and deepening moral exhaustion.”

Such sabotage operations typically follow a set pattern, the SVR said, with Britain planning and coordinating, and Ukrainian operatives carrying out the attacks. The report suggested that the same approach was used in recent railway sabotage in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk Regions, which Moscow denounced as

Ukrainian “terrorist attacks.” The incidents killed seven and injured over 120, including children. The agency also cited the June 1 Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian airbases as part of the same playbook.

The “Anglo-Ukrainian terrorist tandem” is now preparing more attacks, the SVR claimed, aiming toescalate the conflict, derail Moscow-Washington dialogue, and convince the White House to maintain large-scale military support for Kiev.

According to the agency, one such scenario involves a false flag Russian torpedo attack on a US Navy ship in the Baltic Sea. Ukraine has already supplied Soviet-made torpedoes to the UK, the SVR said. Some are meant to detonate at a “safe distance,” while one will be left unexploded “as evidence of Moscow’s malicious activity.” Ukrainian operatives, it added, are prepared to carry out the plan.

Another alleged scheme involves British, Ukrainian, andNorthern European partners “accidentally” recovering Russian-made naval mines in the Baltic, supposedly placed to sabotage international maritime shipping routes.

“Kiev has become the perfect executor of vile provocations and terrorist acts for perfidious Albion [England],” the SVR concluded.

Islam growing three times as fast as Christianity – study

The global Muslim population grew by nearly 21% in the 2010s, Pew Research Center data suggests

Islam grew approximately three times as fast as Christianity between 2010 and 2020, spurred by higher birth rates and lower rates of deconversion, according to new data from the Pew Research Center.

The global population of Muslims rose by nearly 21% over the ten-year span, while the number of Christians only grew by around 6%, according to data from the study, which was released last week.

The number of Muslims grew twice as fast as the rest of the world’s population, which expanded by 10% during the same decade. Islam also gained more individual followers than all non-Muslim religions combined during the decade, the research indicated.

The study cited higher birth rates and a younger average age among adherents of Islam as key reasons for the growth. On average, a Muslim woman was estimated to have 2.9 children during her lifetime, compared to 2.2 for non-Muslim women, the research suggested, citing 2015-2020 data.

New converts and those leaving the faith had little impact on the growth, as both averaged about 1% during the 2010s, according to the study.

Despite growing more slowly,Christianity had remained the world’s largest religion, with 2.3 billion followers in 2020, while Islam held second place with 2 billion, the research indicated. While the number of Christians grew within the ten-year period, the religion’s overall share of the global population shrank by nearly 2%, according to the data.

Christian population growth has tapered due to high rates of people leaving to become religiously unaffiliated, according to the study. Despite relatively high fertility rates among adherents, the faith witnessed a net loss of 11.6 adults for every 100 adults who were raised as Christian.

“Islam is set to grow to become the world's largest religion in years ahead, unless trend lines shift,” said Conrad Hackett, the lead researcher at the Pew Research Center and the main author of the study, according to The Washington Post.

He added thatit was “striking” to see such a dramatic shift in just a decade, pointing out that the Muslim and Christian populations had grown closer in size as Islam expanded more rapidly than any other major faith.

The research covered thousands of censuses and surveys in 201 countries and focused on seven groups: Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, other religions, and individuals who do not identify with any particular religion.

Russia tests new laser weapons (VIDEO)

The Russian government has announced a successful test of eight new amplified light anti-aircraft systems

Russia has successfullytested eight anti-aircraft laser systems, the government said on Friday. They were designed specifically totackle drone threats, the statement added.

The trials were attended by senior Russian officials, including Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. The tests were conducted at specialized proving grounds and organized by Russia’s Military-Industrial Commission and Ministry of Industry and Trade.

“During the tests, the accuracy of guidance, range of destruction, reaction speed of the systems to moving air targets, and resistance to various weather conditions were checked,” the Russian government said in its statement.

Eight new weapons, ranging from “compact mobile devices to stationary high-power systems,” were tested during the trials. The laser weapons faced assorted targets, including small-sized commercial drones and “more complex devices simulating reconnaissance and attack drones,” the Kremlin said.

Footage of the trials shows drones getting shot out of the sky by laser beams and crashing into the ground. The video also features the destroyed targets put on display, with some of the drones appearing to bear distinct burn marks.

All the systems featured at the test performed as advertised by their manufacturers, the statement noted. It also said that the trials proved “the correctness of the chosen direction for the development of integrated defense systems” to protect critical infrastructure facilities from UAVs. The trials pave the way to mass production of the relevant systems and to scaling the solutions displayed by the manufacturers, it added.

Attempts to create laser-based weaponry, including anti-aircraft systems, have been repeatedly made by many nations. Most combat laser systems however, never made it past the prototype stage, being plagued by assorted operational and technical issues, including too short a range and dependency on high-output power sources.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, where cheap mass-produced drones have become a key tool for both battlefield use and long-range strikes, has apparently given a new impetus to the development of laser-based systems. In recent months, several countries, including Ukraine, India, and Israel, have unveiled new weapons of the type.

Have We Forgotten How The Senate Works? – Navigating the BBB

June 16, 2025 | Sundance1/2

I’m becoming increasingly convinced that people on the ConInc side of the conversation also need to pretend not to know things.

There is an increased sentiment of frustration toward President Donald Trump being espoused, and obviously that will be amplified by those who want to use a narrative of “increased sentiment of frustration toward President Trump.”

The part that surprises me is the part where people seem to have forgotten the purpose of the U.S. Senate.

CONTEXT – Currently there is a Big Beautiful Bill (BBB) in the senate, the culmination of years of work by President Trump and his team together with politicians in congress. There is no smaller BBB, there is no modified BBB, there is only one big comprehensive package of initiatives and priorities for President Trump’s agenda. One Big Beautiful Bill.

That’s it. Just this one legislative priority that has all the stuff Donald Trump promised in the 2024 election. It’s all in one bill; all of it. As a consequence, President Trump needs this bill to pass congress; there is no fallback position; there is no alternative; there is no safer option. The BBB is an all or nothing swing for the fences.

GAINING VOTES – This BBB is the legislative package approach that President Trump accepted. As a consequence whatever it takes to get that BBB legislation passed, is exactly what we should expect to see done.Remember, this is a legislative construct that only targets REPUBLICAN VOTES. Republicans control every element of this BBB discussion.

People not happy about President Trump remarks about illegal-alien farm workers. Well, President Trump is buying gaining the votes of Big Ag state senators.

People not happy about President Trump support for Israel. Well, President Trump is buying gaining the votes of Big War senators.

People not happy about President Trump support for more Ukraine weapons against a peace initiative targeting Vladimir Putin. Again, President Trump is buying gaining the votes of the defense contractor senators.

These are just a few examples of stuff in the background. The passage of the BBB is a priority for President Trump and every Republican senator knows this.Every single republican senator is willing to blackmail President Trump to get support for their vote.

People not happy about (_fill in blank) as a Trump compromise, need to understand there is no alternative to the BBB that contains all of the legislative priorities of Trump. If the bill fails, he fails. Whatever is needed for passage will be done.

If doing ‘whatever it takes‘ hurts our worldview, ideological preferences or even, wait for it, feelings, welcome to politics.

President Donald Trump – “Our Nation’s ICE Officers have shown incredible strength, determination, and courage as they facilitate a very important mission, the largest Mass Deportation Operation of Illegal Aliens in History. Every day, the Brave Men and Women of ICE are subjected to violence, harassment, and even threats from Radical Democrat Politicians, but nothing will stop us from executing our mission, and fulfilling our Mandate to the American People. ICE Officers are herewith ordered, by notice of this TRUTH, to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.”

“In order to achieve this, we must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America’s largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside. These, and other such Cities, are the core of the Democrat Power Center, where they use Illegal Aliens to expand their Voter Base, cheat in Elections, and grow the Welfare State, robbing good paying Jobs and Benefits from Hardworking American Citizens.

These Radical Left Democrats are sick of mind, hate our Country, and actually want to destroy our Inner Cities — And they are doing a good job of it! There is something wrong with them. That is why they believe in Open Borders, Transgender for Everybody, and Men playing in Women’s Sports — And that is why I want ICE, Border Patrol, and our Great and Patriotic Law Enforcement Officers, to FOCUS on our crime ridden and deadly Inner Cities, and those places where Sanctuary Cities play such a big role. You don’t hear about Sanctuary Cities in our Heartland!”

“I want our Brave ICE Officers to know that REAL Americans are cheering you on every day. The American People want our Cities, Schools, and Communities to be SAFE and FREE from Illegal Alien Crime, Conflict, and Chaos. That’s why I have directed my entire Administration to put every resource possible behind this effort, and reverse the tide of Mass Destruction Migration that has turned once Idyllic Towns into scenes of Third World Dystopia. Our Federal Government will continue to be focused on the REMIGRATION of Aliens to the places from where they came, and preventing the admission of ANYONE who undermines the domestic tranquility of the United States.

To ICE, FBI, DEA, ATF, the Patriots at Pentagon and the State Department, you have my unwavering support. Now go, GET THE JOB DONE!” DJT
