Trump warns ‘everyone’ to flee Tehran

The Pentagon has confirmed the deployment of additional “defensive capabilities” to the Middle East

US President Donald Trump has issued a cryptic warning on Truth Social, urging “everyone” to leave the Iranian capital as soon as possible, without confirming whether Washington will intervene in the ongoing tit-for-tat hostilities between Israel and Iran.

The two states have been exchanging strikes since West Jerusalem bombed Iranian nuclear and military facilities last Friday, describing the move as a preemptive effort to halt Tehran’s alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons.Israel has also targeted civilian areas, causing casualties, and struck Iran’s state broadcaster on Monday. Iran, which denies seeking a military nuclear capability, said the airstrikes amounted to a declaration of war and retaliated with multiple volleys of ballistic missiles aimed at Israel.

“Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. Such a shame and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CANNOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again!” Trump wrote on Monday evening, as the conflict entered its fifth day.

“Everyone needs to evacuate Tehran immediately!” the US leader added, without elaborating on where the city’s roughly 10 million residents should go.

Trump earlier insisted that the US “had nothing to do with the attack on Iran” but warned Tehran of retaliation “at levels never seen before” if it targets American assets in the region. He declined to clarify what might trigger US military involvement, telling reporters on Monday: “I don’t want to talk about that.”

Earlier in the day, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the deployment of additional “defensive capabilities” to the Middle East, without disclosing which military assets were sent over the weekend.

“Protecting US forces is our top priority, and these deployments are intended to enhance our defensive posture in the region,” Hegseth posted on X.

According to Military Watch Magazine, the US has reportedly sent more than 30 aerial refueling tankers across the Atlantic toward the Middle East. The outlet described the buildup as “unprecedented,” suggesting it could signal broader US involvement in the Israeli-Iranian conflict.

Israel has reportedly asked the US to participate directly in strikes on Iran. The Israeli Air Force lacks the bunker-buster bombs required to destroy Iran’s heavily fortified underground nuclear sites, but Washington could supply them, Axios reported Saturday, citing Israeli officials.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to rule out an attempt to assassinate Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, telling ABC News on Monday: “It’s going to end the conflict.”

Tehran has repeatedly stated that its nuclear program is peaceful and has accused Israel of undermining diplomatic efforts with the US.

“Iran did NOT begin this war and has no interest in perpetuating bloodshed. But we will proudly fight to the last drop of blood to protect our land,”Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X on Monday. He warned that “getting the US mired in the Mother of Forever Wars”would destroy any chance of a diplomatic solution.

Ten Years Ago Today

June 16, 2025 | Sundance |

I know more than a few of us were here on these pages discussing Donald Trump in June of 2015 when he announced his intention to run for the Republican presidential nomination.

Many of you might even remember my initial reaction to Trump’s announcement,“Donald Trump could show up to the GOP debate in 5-inch heels, a Carmen Miranda hat and start twerking the podium of Jeb Bush, and I’d still support him.”

All of those years taking apart the republican party strategy and their illusion of choice, for me the #1 signal that Donald Trump was a legit outsidercame from his placement in the announcement. President Trump was the last candidate to announce entry; all the other candidates were in place before he announced. That datapoint told me he was for real.

Donald Trump personifies EVERYTHING the liberal left hate– the media will attack Trump with exponentially greater Alinsky force than they did Sarah Palin; and only Trump has the moxy to win against them:

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says he has ordered the deployment of additional defensive capabilities to the Middle East, as the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran drives regional tensions higher.

Hegseth did not disclose what military capabilities he sent to the region. But Reuters was the first to report earlier today a deployment of a large number of US military refueling aircraft and the movement of an aircraft carrier to the Middle East.

“Protecting US forces is our top priority and these deployments are intended to enhance our defensive posture in the region,”Hegseth says in a post on social media platform X.

Netanyahu tells ABC he's not ruling out taking out Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei 1/2

"They're deliberately targeting our population," Netanyahu told ABC News.

ABC News’ full interview with Israeli PM NetanyahuABC News’ Chief Washington Correspondent Jon Karl interviewed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the conflict with Iran.ABC News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told ABC News on Monday that targeting Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei would end, not escalate, the ongoing fight between Israel and Iran that erupted late last week.

When asked by ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl about reports from ABC News and other outlets that President Donald Trump rejected an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran's Supreme Leader, concerned that it would escalate the conflict, Netanyahu said, "It's not going to escalate the conflict, it's going to end the conflict."

"We've had half a century of conflict spread by this regime that terrorizes everyone in the Middle East; has bombed the Aramco oil fields in Saudi Arabia; is spreading terrorism and subversion and sabotage everywhere,"

Netanyahu said. "The 'forever war' is what Iran wants, and they're bringing us to the brink of nuclear war. In fact, what Israel is doing is preventing this, bringing an end to this aggression, and we can only do so by standing up to the forces of evil."

Asked if Israel would target the supreme leader, Netanyahu said that Israel was "doing what we need to do."

"I'm not going to get into the details, but we've targeted their top nuclear scientists," Netanyahu said. "It's basically Hitler's nuclear team."

Netanyahu said it in America's interest to support Israel as it seeks to eliminate Iran's nuclear program.

=="Today, it's Tel Aviv. Tomorrow, it's New York. Look, I understand 'America First'. I don't understand 'America Dead'. That's what these people want. They chant 'Death to America.'

So we're doing something that is in the service of mankind, of humanity, and it's a battle of good against evil. America does, should, and does stand with the good. That's what President Trump is doing, And I deeply appreciate his support," he told Karl.==

Israel's prime minister also dismissed a Wall Street Journal report that Iran has been urgently signaling that it is wants to end hostilities and resume negotiations over its nuclear program.

"I'm not surprised. I mean, they want to continue to have these fake talks in which they lie, they cheat, they string the U.S. along. And, you know, we have very solid Intel on that," he said. "They want to keep on building their nuclear weapons and building their mass ballistic missile arsenal, which they're firing at our people. They want to continue to create the two existential threats against Israel while they're talking. That's not going to happen."

Asked to respond to some Republicans opposed to America's military support for Israel's strikes against Iran, including commentator Tucker Carlson, Netanyahu said Iran is a "threat to the entire world."

Karl asked Netanyahu about whether he would stop bombing if Trump requested him to do so and to resume diplomatic talks.

"Well, President Trumphas been a great leader, a great leader of the world, and a great leader and a great friend of Israel, and he put forward the terms very clearly in the negotiations," Netanyahu said. (Trump: He’s been a great leader, why in the past tense? What’s that about?)

"He said Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and in order for it not to have a nuclear weapon, it cannot have the capacity to enrich uranium, which is the prerequisite for nuclear weapons."

"We're not just fighting our enemy. We're fighting your enemy. For God's sake, they chant, "death to Israel, death to America." We're simply on their way. And this could reach America soon," Netanyahu said.

In his Friday newsletter, Carlson wrote that "The United States should not at any level participate in a war with Iran. No funding, no American weapons, no troops on the ground," and that the United States should let Israel 'fight their own wars'.

"We're taking the action. America is supporting us in defense. Deeply, deeply appreciated. But this is a threat to the entire world," Netanyahu said. "It's a threat to Israel; as I said to our Arab neighbors; to Europe; to America. They chant 'Death to America.' It's though 'This is not your business'? This is not myopia. This is utter blindness."

"Sometimes you have to take a stand against evil. And that's what the American people instinctively understand. Most of them, I have to say. And that's what President Trump understands. We cannot let that happen," he added.

He later added that the Iranians do not want to continue negotiations in good faith and are "stringing the U.S. along" as they keep building up their weapons. "They don't want a seat at the table – they want to blow up the table. Specifically, they want to blow up Israel and purchase time," Netanyahu said.

Later, Karl said it seemed like Netanyahu and Trump were disagreeing over whether Israel should take out Khamenei. Netanyahu responded, "I wouldn't rush to conclusions."

Karl asked what more Netanyahu would want from Trump and the United States, or if he expected the U.S. Air Force to help them.

Netanyahu praised the American defenses helping Israel against drones and missiles, but added, "As far as what else America will do – that's up to President Trump. He will do what's in the best interest of the United States, but it's important to understand that we deeply appreciate his help and the help and the support of the great majority of the American people, because they understand what we're fighting against.

"We're fighting against a regime that hates us both, that is trying to assassinate us both, that there is trying to bring death and destruction throughout the Middle East and to the world. And sometimes you have to take a stand. You take a stand with the good against evil. And that's precisely what America is doing under President Trump," Netanyahu said.

Trump cuts G7 trip short due to “what’s going on in the Middle East

June 16, 20251/2

President Trump will cut short his trip to Canada for a meeting with world leaders and fly back to Washington late Monday, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, citing "what's going on in the Middle East."

Mr. Trump arrived in Canada on Sunday for the annual G7 summit, and met with the leaders of Canada and the United Kingdom earlier Monday. But Leavitt said on X Monday night that the president would leave early, seeming to refer to the Israel-Iran conflict.

"Much was accomplished, but because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State," Leavitt wrote.

Asked on Monday why he's leaving the summit, Mr. Trump said, "I have to be back early for obvious reasons."

Leavitt said in a statement the president is returning to the capital to "attend to many important matters."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also heading back to Washington, a State Department spokesperson told CBS News.

The U.S. is not joining Israel's military offensive, U.S. officials told CBS News Monday evening. Despite reports that Mr. Trump asked the National Security Council and Situation Room to be readied upon his return to the White House, Cabinet members in the National Security Council are already on standby 24 hours a day — including since Israel's strikes on Iran began last week.

A spokesperson for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office told CBS News the country "was informed of President Trump's departure through official channels prior to the White House's public announcement."

The Middle East situation has been the focus of much of the summit already. During Mr. Trump's meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the president said he had "spoken to everybody" regarding Israel and Iran.

"I've spoken to everybody. Israel is doing very well, as you probably noticed," the president said, adding, "I think a deal will be signed or something will happen, but I think a deal will be signed. I think Iran is foolish not to sign one."

After the Wall Street Journal reported Monday that Iran had sent messages to intermediaries indicating they want to de-escalate the conflict, Mr. Trump affirmed to reporters during his meeting with the Canadian prime minister that he was aware of the messages.

Asked by reporters what he'd heard from Iran, he replied, "They'd like to talk. But they should have done that before. I had 60 days and they had 60 days. And on the 61st day, I said, we don't have a deal. They have to make a deal." He went on to say, "It's painful for both parties, but I'd say Iran is not winning this war. And they should talk, and they should talk immediately before it's too late."

The president's sudden return to Washington comes as Israel and Iran trade airstrikes and missile attacks in the two foes' most intense fighting in decades.

Israel has carried out multiple rounds of airstrikes since late last week, saying it is targeting Iran's nuclear program, research scientists and top military officials. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Israel.

On Monday, Israel struck Iranian state television in the capital of Tehran, and urged hundreds of thousands of residents of central Tehran to evacuate. Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!"

The president and other American officials have said publicly and privately that the U.S. is not involved in Israel's strikes on Iran, though Israel did tell the U.S. about the operation in advance, and the U.S. has helped Israel intercept Iranian missiles. CBS News has previously reported that Mr. Trump rejected a plan raised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to kill Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Israeli leader was asked Monday in an interview with ABC News if he planned to target Khamenei….

"Look, we're doing what we need to do," he told ABC News' Jonathan Karl. Karl, noting that Mr. Trump had rejected the idea, told Netanyahu that the president feared that assassinating Iran's supreme leader would escalate the conflict.

"It's not going to escalate the conflict," Netanyahu contended. "It's going to end the conflict." He blamed Iran for "bringing us to the brink of nuclear war," and said that "in fact, what Israel is doing is preventing this, bringing an end to this, this aggression, and we can only do so by standing up to the forces of evil."

The Trump administration has also warned Iran against striking U.S. military bases in the region.

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump has urged Iran to sign a deal to limit the scope of its nuclear program, convening multiple rounds of talks that are now on hold. Iran has long denied any plans to build a nuclear weapon, though international watchdogs say it has increased its stockpile of highly enriched uranium in recent years. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long been skeptical of striking a deal with Iran.

Italy’s Palazzo Maffei Museum has released footage showing a Ukrainian refugee couple damaging a $50,000 art piece—a Swarovski crystal-covered chair by Nicola Bolla, created as a tribute to Van Gogh. The video captures the husband knocking over the chair while attempting to take a photo, then leaving without reporting the incident.

Mykola and Oksana waited for a guard to leave before taking a pic. “We wanted to show our family the luxury of Europe,” said Mykola, who is currently unemployed. Oksana has appealed for leniency, noting they received free museum tickets as refugees
